Another Keeper

The Eagles continued the recent trend of giving out contract extensions, this time taking care of Malcolm Jenkins.

Another good move and another reason to feel good the new direction the Eagles are taking. This year the Eagles have rewarded their own players. That builds pride and confidence. When a team is always looking for answers from the outside, I think that sends a bad signal to the team. That isn’t to say you don’t make moves, even some bold ones, but you want to build through the draft and keep key veterans as much as possible.

The Eagles signed Jon Runyan in 2000 and then gave him another contract a few years later. Troy Vincent signed with the Eagles in 1996 and then got another deal years later. Those were good players and key leaders. Even though the Eagles didn’t draft them, they spent the majority of their careers in Philly and were huge reasons the Eagles were so successful during the Andy Reid era.

Jenkins just had his two best seasons. He is playing the best football of his career. There will be a scheme change and that could affect his productivity, but he is still very much the kind of player you want on your defense. Jenkins is smart and acts as a coach on the field. He is a leader off the field as well. With a slew of young DBs, Jenkins is someone you want to help lead and influence those players, just as Vincent was there for Bobby Taylor, Al Harris and Brian Dawkins.

From a schematic standpoint, Jenkins offers value because of his versatility. He can play in the box, deep or in the slot. He plays the run well and has good cover skills. You can pair Jenkins with a big Safety who is a good run defender or with a smaller guy who specializes in coverage. That kind of flexibility is very helpful in today’s NFL, where finding good Safeties seems to be so difficult.

Speaking of who to pair Jenkins with, he did say he would love to have Walter Thurmond back. We’ll have to wait and see how that situation plays out. Thurmond seems to want to test the market. He also might want to move back to CB, a less physically demanding position than S.

Jenkins was asked about Sam Bradford and said he thinks everyone in the building wants Bradford back.

While Jenkins didn’t rip Chip Kelly, he did talk about the changes in a positive way. He’s happy that the Eagles are focused on keeping their own players. He’s also looking forward to playing fewer snaps this season. Jenkins did say he’s felt the best of his career in the past two seasons. Kelly’s Sports Science program could end up being his key legacy in Philadelphia. That really does seem to have made a difference with some players.

The Eagles still have Thurmond, Bradford and Fletcher Cox as players to try to extend/re-sign, but Howie Roseman has done a great job so far of keeping the right players around.

Outside of new scheme and the strong likelihood that our defense will not have to play as many snaps per game as they did under Chip I am not sure why so many people just assume the Eagles will be a top 10 defense and that much improved this upcoming season. Heck, some people are even saying the Eagles defense could be top 5 or a dominating type of defense. I guess I don’t see that considering how may games we gave up a ton of points last year. I think we will be better for the reasons I just listed, but top 5? top 10? Our secondary was sub-par and the second half of the season we could not stop the run which was really surprising. I should also note that promising 2nd year LB Jordan Hicks will be back and he certainly looks like he could be a special player, but we need another starting safety, d line depth , and CB depth also. There is strong reason to believe the defense will be better, but it may be a stretch to jump to a top 5-10 defense with essentially the same players returning IMHO.

I agree, I’ll believe top 10 when I see it. Yes, we do have the parts to begin building a very good defense: strong DL play, promising young LBs, stud safety. The corners are coming along. But not counting any chickens yet. Can’t wait for August

  7. 7 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:41 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

Mostly I think fans are just excited knowing that some of our Talented defenders like curry will be placed in a better position to use their talents.
    .
Before even knowing what the defensive roster will look like, i can’t say they will have a top,10 defense, but if they don’t have one next year, I assume at some point our new DC will build that quality defense for us..
    ..
A better DC, good playërs being used in better ways that better suit their strengths, is an exciting time,,I would also think what we have on defense is closer to what we saw the first half of the season, then the second half meltdown..
    ,,
If we don’t have a top Defense this year, im confident our DC will built that defense at some point..
    ..
For me, my biggest source of excitement is no longer having a HC who will tell the defense how to operate which I hated about chip. Pederson will leave Schwartz alone to do his thing, and that’s a very exciting change from the days of chip demanding a two gap 3-4, singke high, press man… If THATS how we decide to play defense, Fine, but I want the DC making that decision, not Chip… His silly offensive philosophies did enough damage to our defense without him demanding certain defensive schemes even tho our Talent was better suited to play a different scheme..
    ..
A HC who will leave schwartz alone to run his defense, we are in good hands. And that’s very exciting after what we been thru

Give it time. It’s a building process, not an over night success story.

  9. 9 Ben said at 3:03 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

    It’s very simple math.
We add switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and multiply that by the Schwartz hire.
Now we can take the reins off Cox and allow him to attack the QB on every down, as opposed to read and react the 3-4 required of him.
We clearly did not utilize Cox the way he should be deployed.
This will have a ripple effect, putting much more pressure on the QB to throw early, which will alleviate pressure on our secondary to cover for extended amounts of time.
If you cut the amount of time your secondary has to cover a receiver then you have changed the entire dynamic of your defense.
Top ten is a realistic possibility with Schwartz orchestrating this defense.

    IMHO.

  10. 10 Fufina said at 6:38 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

My biggest concern with Jenkins extension, and retaining Thurmond to an even bigger extent is the projection of Safety play in the new scheme. An attacking 4-3 is better for CB’s and DL, but puts a lot of pressure on LB’s and S’s in the run game, where they will have primary gap responsibilities at times.

Jenkins and Thurmond last year really just worried about the pass and if things broke down in the run game then they needed to help clean up any big runs but they had one focus and they did it really well. Not sure how well either guy is going to transition to playing in the box run defense on 1st and 2nd down, especially since teams will try to run to slow down the pass rush and wear out our DT’s. Not saying Jenkins will become a bad player… he will still be a decent one, but maybe not a 8mil a year safety in the new scheme.

  11. 11 Anders said at 6:54 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

Jenkins played a ton in the box the last two years and there is great chance that Thurmond wants too much.

You also give too much credit to other teams. This is a passing league, they will pass first and run second

  12. 12 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 7:52 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

Jenkins made a lot of plays in the box last year and around the LOS. He his nose there whenever he wasn’t playing Nickel. The guy was in the backfield more than our LBs.

I think schwartz has that covered. By this Point in his career, im pretty sure he knows what he NEEDS and what he can’t work with …. If we see the Eagles give thurmond a big deal, I would assume Schwartz signed off on it.
    ..
A player like Thurmond who can play almost anywhere in the secondary is extremely valuable especially with all the injuries in this game, but I assume it’s more likely that we lose him, then it is that we are able to retain him..
    ..
Hopefully he doesn’t find the market he is looking for and returns at a reasonable number, but Im not counting on that.

Would anyone have a problem with moving Rowe to S, sign Thurmond for the slot. Shepard and Maxwell at CB?

  16. 16 bill said at 9:50 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

Looking at the safeties Schwartz had in Detroit, I don’t think any of them are prototypical box safeties. In fact, from what I read, most were about Jenkins’s size, and were listed as free safeties. I very easily could be wrong about these guys, because I’m completely reliant on my googling skills in making these evaluations, but it doesn’t seem like Schwartz needed big thumpers at S within the last 10 years. Early 2000s, with TEN, he had some, but that was a long time ago, in NFL time.

I wonder if they could re-sign Thurmond as a CB and grab a veteran role player type to play S next to Jenkins. I do think Thurmond might be a little small to play S for Schwartz, based upon what he had in DET.

  17. 17 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:23 AM on February 23rd, 2016:

  19. 19 FairOaks said at 12:20 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Shepherd was slated for the nickel corner slot last year — he’s still on the team. You want some competition there in training camp for sure, in case he doesn’t come back from the injury, but you also don’t sign a high-priced veteran either.

I like the little bit of what I’ve seen of Alexander but haven’t really dug in. I really like Darian Thompson, it’s probably a tad early but he’s really good. Although if we take a S that high, in this town, he’s gonna get booed if he makes a tackle that is only for a 2 yard loss because Dawkins would have had a 35 yard TFL.

Spriggs reminds me alot of Jake Fisher from last year, so probably in the right scheme.

There will be plenty of good options in the late 2nd or 3rd rounds that are more natural guards. No need to take an OL in rd 1 just to say you did.

  90. 90 RC5000 said at 2:44 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

He played left tackle for last 2 seasons, left guard and right tackle before that according to NFL.COM. Size wise you probably want him at guard. I’ve only seen him a little, they compare him to Zach Martin but I don’t know if he’s that good.

  91. 91 D3FB said at 9:47 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Whitehair plays LT at K-State but just doesn’t really have T feet. His incredibly technically gifted. Can he play T for a short period or even a season if it allows you to get your best 5 OL on the field? Sure. But long term he’s a much better G.

The one player in the class who can arguably play all 5 positions is Max Tuerk.

Not sure if this had been noted, but looks like the NFL withheld some money from the players they shouldn’t have — and lost in arbitration. I’ll freely admit I’m not a fan but I wait until after the draft to see how this team is shaping up. You really can’t say one way or another right now.

I also won’t bury Roseman either if this team has a 5-11/6-10 season next year either. Think he got a very mediocre roster with a real lack of upper-echelon talent with a lot of holes and misfitting parts from Kelly. Deserves at least a minimum of 2 years and really into that 3rd season to put his mark on this team.

  95. 95 SteveH said at 1:00 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Technically, everyone but Celek. But despite them being “Kelly Era” guys, I actually agree with the original post. Howie is doing a good job locking down key players, and while other teams are doing similar things, I can’t think of another team doing this many deals right now. Not to mention the fact that the earlier the deals this year, the better cap-wise. He locked them down before the new cap numbers were revealed. I’d be willing to bet that SF will pay more for their TE despite less production than Ertz or KC’s Kelce, for example.

    1) He has worked his whole front office career in Philadelphia so he has a pulse on the fanbase and understands this market thoroughly in regards on how to sell players to come here.

    2) He has already gone through the GM stint as a 35 year old in 2010

    3) He BETTER BE smarter/older/wiser this time around

    4) He is young enough to not have blinders on. (I forgot he was 35 when he was named GM after Heckert left for Cleveland).

    5) Since 2010 he was under the thumb of Reid/Kelly in regards to final personnel decisions.

    6) He has experience working with a long tenured coach (Reid), a hot commodity (CK), building through FA (Dream Team debacle), drafting for need (Watkins, Jarret)….. so in my eyes the man has seen every conceivable way NOT to BUILD a Team and also successful ways also because 2000-2016 has been a roller coaster since he has been here.

    7) Pederson is from the Reid/Holmgren coaching tree. Howie saw success with Reid and in my mind will be able to help Pederson create a program like Big Red’s successful tenure.

I don’t get why the FOP union president is getting involved since these were off-duty cops or why he’s publicly pressuring the DA to file charges.

LeSean won’t get convicted or serve any prison time. That video McNesby points to doesn’t show anything definitive.

It’s just going to make those cops and the entire police department look worse.

I think we would all agree that Howie is great at extending players, working the cap, and seeing trade value. Where we all worry is his talent evaluation and his inability to be accountable for anything. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be successful as we would like until we get a GM that can evaluate and also be a “cap genius.”

Also, I am just speculating: but what is with one of our front office guys leaving two weeks ago? Could he not work with Howie? Howie has had a reputation of being difficult to work with. Again this is more conjecture because we do not have anything to talk about, but it is interesting nonetheless.

  224. 224 laeagle said at 2:05 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Who, the scouting guy? Why should we be concerned if a 23 year old glorified intern leaves (after his replacement is already hired)?

  225. 225 Nick C said at 2:10 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Teams, in general, do not relieve anyone until after the draft. I clearly said I was speculating. I too hope that Howie has learned from some of his mistakes, and does better this time around. His moves are headed in the correct direction. But they also have all been pretty obvious. I am all for giving him an offseason to prove it. I am not saying Fire Howie. I’m just seeing lets wait and see how he does with the talent evaluation side before we crown the guy.

  226. 226 laeagle said at 2:12 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

You need to do some more research into the guy who was let go. You’re doing exactly what all the beat writers were doing: assuming this was some big problem. A number of people completely debunked this idea.

In other words, please disperse, there is nothing to see here. At least with regards to the guy who they mutually parted ways with.

  227. 227 Nick C said at 2:28 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

It was just strange timing to get rid of a scouting director. I heard that it was mutual as well. But seriously, how often is a relationship ever mutually terminated? You can read the reports, do all the research you want; but the fact is that none of us were in the room. Yes, I am being “no better” than a beat writer right now… But what else is there to talk about? We all gave our thoughts on the Jenkins extension yesterday. I guess we could talk about the report that Sam is “expected” to re-sign. But that will probably just bring up too many debates for you and other people may not care for you talking down to them because they have a different opinion.

  228. 228 laeagle said at 2:30 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Let me save you some research. They parted ways with a 23 year old guy who fetched coffee and managed a database. Something you’d pay a temp $15/hour to handle. His title sounded far more impressive than his position.

If you want to get upset about that, or think it raises deeper questions, then by all means, feel free to do so.

  229. 229 Nick C said at 2:36 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

The entire point I was trying to make is that Howie is considered difficult to work with BY SOME. I already said I was not in the room and I was just SPECULATING for the sheer fact that there is nothing going on right now. Does the intern or “coffee guy” have much to do with my argument? No, it was an example. I could have named Tom Gamble, who he ousted on a power play or other executives.
Bottom line: My entire point was that I would like to see Howie capable in the areas that have previously been challenging for him and you are debating whether the sky is blue.

  230. 230 laeagle said at 2:41 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

“Also, I am just speculating: but what is with one of our front office guys leaving two weeks ago?”

    Your quote.

The intern guy has zero to do with any argument about Howie being difficult to work with. Zero. He was a nobody. You, and others, are trying to add him to the list of examples of Howie’s dissension with others. That is not the case here, or if it is, it’s entirely irrelevant. You saw his title and thought, “hey, why is a scouting director being let go?” That didn’t happen. A glorified intern was let go.

Howie may in fact be difficult, and probably is. You’re trying to raise the question in light of something that happened that is not at all tied to how difficult he is to work with. You’re making an absolutely false correlation. There are plenty of examples of Howie’s personal issues to be reviewed without throwing this log onto the fire. And your point about his difficulty is entirely tied to you bringing up this “scouting director”, so this is not a case of my debating whether the sky was blue.

Your point about this guy being an issue was proven wrong. Accept it and move on.

Off season is the in-season for misinformation.

At the end of the day, for the right price, a deal before FA could be best for both sides. Sammy boy hits FA and doesn’t sign quickly, the price starts dropping. If he hits the market and interest is high his price sky rockets.

If you get him signed before FA, the agent could privately sell that it was the top of the market. The Eagles are happy that they don’t have to big against anyone and can privately sell that it was a steal.

The way the market is shaping up, I sort of doubt there will be any real bidding wars for the guy. Might really be best to just get the contract done.

  260. 260 Mitchell said at 11:32 PM on February 23rd, 2016:

Can’t remember for sure if there is Jayron Kearse love on this board but I thought I would give him a look and write some thoughts: Huge player at 6’4″ and around 210-220. Problem is he doesn’t play with great physicality, especially close to the line. You often will see him rush toward the LOS then proceed to slow down and kind of wait for the runner to get slowed by his fellow teammates. The above scenario will happen or he will simply crash into someone with a shoulder taking himself out of the play, similar to a kamikaze. I often saw him over shoot running plays and when he did read the plays correctly, his tackling was lackluster. Then the question becomes, “ok, so maybe he is more of a single high type.” Well, not so much in my opinion. On several plays he was slow to react to the qb, often getting stuck looking for the ball in the backfield and getting frozen by play action. It’s hard to judge “range” on the draftbreakdown film but in the few clips I was able to see, Kearse seemed average at best, partially due to lackluster foot speed and partially due to poor instincts. One play particular against ND was troubling, where Kearse had a chance to tackle the WR before reaching the endzone and simply seemed to let up. I don’t really want that in a safety. He covered pretty well in man, unfortunately his style of coverage is going to get a quite a few flags thrown in the NFL because of his constant contact beyond 5 yards. On the occasion Kearse read the play well, he was able to close on pass catchers quickly and lay some big hits. Overall I saw a huge player for the safety position with below average play around the LOS and questionable instincts and range. While he can make some plays because of his size it doesn’t make up for the fact that he is timid and often looks like he is standing straight up, not sure where to go. I think this player may get overdrafted because of the defense he played in at Clemson and his physical attributes. I would rate Kearse in 6th-7th round simply due to size and give him a “chubbymeter” rating of 3/10.

  261. 261 Media Mike said at 5:07 AM on February 24th, 2016:

I’ve been taking him in mocks in the 4th or 5th is he’s still around. I figure his size is worth a chance for us to see if he can play against taller TEs and help with taller WRs.
