More on the QB Shuffle

The Eagles want to bring back Sam Bradford, at the right price. They want to draft a QB, whether one of the Big 3 or a player from the next tier. The rest of the league will play a part in both situations.

As I’ve covered before, I’m not sure how much of a market there will be for Bradford. Some teams want rookies. Other teams have their eyes on other veterans. I think this will keep Bradford’s price in a reasonable range. That doesn’t mean the deal is a slam dunk or will be easy.

I’m sure agent Tom Condon wants to create the impression that at least one other team will aggressively pursue Bradford. That is all it takes to up his price.

One of the key teams in all of this is the Niners. What will they do? They say they will keep Colin Kaepernick, but everyone else “knows” that is mostly posturing. They want to trade him. Who will be interested? Reports came out today that the Texans and Browns are interested. A trustworthy Houston reporter, John McClain, quickly shot down that rumor. Word out of Cleveland is that the Browns are not interested at this time.

But the Browns are the team I’ve heard do have interest in him, specially coach Hue Jackson. Cleveland reporter Mary Kay Cabot noted Jackson’s interest from the past.

In 2013, Jackson told Peter King of si.com that “we wanted the kid in the worst way.”

He acknowledged that the late Raiders owner Al Davis was also upset that they didn’t land him.

“Scouting him, I fell in love with the kid,” said Jackson. “Leader, won a ton of games at Nevada, really impressive when you talked to him, strong, all the tools to win in the NFL. No doubt in my mind he was going to be good.”

If Kap goes to Cleveland, whether via trade or cut/signing, that could create an opening. The Niners could keep Blaine Gabbert as their starter. They could try to sign Bradford. They could also spend pick 7 on a QB. If the Browns land the right veteran QB, they could pass on a QB at the second spot and go for another position.

Dallas is another wild card. Logic says they should take a QB at pick 4. But Jerry Jones says Tony Romo is his QB for the next 4 or 5 years. If that’s the case, they may go in another direction with that pick.

The point of all this is that the Eagles have a good chance to either re-sign Bradford or get one of the best QBs in the draft. It is possible that the Eagles could be the first team to draft a QB. What goes down in early March will have a huge impact on what happens in late April.

The fantasy scenario would be for the Eagles to re-sign Bradford, trade back from pick 13 and get a 2nd rounder, and then still be able to draft Paxton Lynch. That’s not likely to happen, but one can dream.

It is possible Bradford could sign elsewhere. He might just want to go elsewhere. Or some other team could out-bid the Eagles. I want him back, but the price has to be right. Bradford isn’t a great player and the Eagles aren’t a QB away from being an elite team. They need to be smart shoppers.

*****

I wrote a review of the offensive players at the Combine.

The Eagles have good choices at OL and QB.

The WR class is only so-so this year. There are players to be had, but the impact guys would likely have to come early. Would the Eagles spend pick 13 on a WR?

Will they address WR in free agency?

We do know the Eagles need help there. Nelson Agholor needs to take a big step forward, but beyond that, the group still needs a boost.

*****

No surprise here.

Lynch could be a key target at pick 13.

Thanks Tommy for the post. Always enjoying reading your stuff!

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh added another former Eagles DL (yeah I know they were never on 53) to the roster and put him in the OL. Since we need a lot of OL help, how ’bout we do that ourselves with some DL try-outs before letting Steelers doing it once again 😉

Convert Taylor Hart to OT. He’s 6-6 and probably weighs 295, 300 pounds. Probably won’t work but he sucks as a DL and doesn’t fit the 4-3 so why not?

Jeez, look at Taylor Hart’s pro-day numbers (he didn’t compete at the Combine):

Eagles should be smart shoppers, but bottom line is they have no choice but to re-sign Bradford and he controls the leverage which is why I believe these rumors of an offer increase.

Where they need to be smarter moving forward is to give themselves more options so they cannot be leveraged as easily and to massively improve their capabilities in developing talent, especially QB. This is why teams draft young QB and develop them while they still have a good starter or two decent options competing for the starting job. By the time they need to extend the vet, they could have a young cheap buck earning the job.

Believing falsely Sanchez was a viable option to start, failing to develop Barkley and trading away Foles for Bradford on a 1 year try-out placed an immense amount of pressure on Bradford succeeding and opened the Eagles up to this exact scenario: Bradford succeeded, but only to a mediocre level and thus the path forward is very foggy. If he had failed outright or been a huge success, the way ahead would have been more clear.

Now they are forced to extend him simply because they have no other viable option and thus the likelihood this will pan out is much lower.unfortunately. They are desperate and desperation usually leads to mistakes.

    Which side leaked?

    Why?

  21. 21 Gary Barnes said at 8:51 PM on February 28th, 2016:

Its more to the benefit of Bradford IMO so I’d lean toward the agent being the leaker. The agent can argue the Eagles are going beyond their normal boundaries because Bradford is that good and thus other teams better have their checkbooks ready. There is an argument it benefits the Eagles more since they could argue they went all-out to re-sign him, but Bradford would not meet them half-way. That would be more Banner style leaking though and I think the Eagles are too desperate in this scenario to try tricks like that. They know they need Bradford more than he needs them.

  22. 22 solid said at 10:23 PM on February 28th, 2016:

I completely understand where you’re coming from, but for me, I don’t think re-signing Bradford is the route they should take. Hell, I would cut Sanchez as well. They just aren’t that good. While Bradford may flash here and there, he just isn’t the same QB that came out of Oklahoma. Having no OL will do that. It ruined Bradford, it ruined David Carr, it has and will continue to ruin any QB prospect you throw in there.

Whatever, they decide to do, they need to shore up the OL. That, we can all agree. Whatever rookie QB comes in, the last thing we need is him running for his life. That is a sure-fire way to ensure he is a bust, whether that be Lynch, Goff, Wentz, Hackenberg, Hogan, etc.

Now you may be asking, well who the hell should we put in at QB then if we let go of everybody? I honestly have no idea, but I would not put in any significant resources into the individuals we had on the depth chart last year.

  23. 23 Gary Barnes said at 12:02 PM on February 29th, 2016:

You hit on the core nature of the dilemma the Eagles have put themselves in.

How do you, as Roseman or Lurie or even Pederson, stand up and state with a straight face the team will compete and do what it takes to win if Bradford is not in the fold and starting? You can’t since the other options – Sanchez, FA vet, draft pick, scrap heap reclamation vet – are not viable to win anything of significance next season.

Roseman, Lurie and Pederson would have to outright admit publicly they are re-tooling and going with QB X with a better future in mind while in the present the team treads water. The fans and media will sharpen their proverbial knives over that type of plan and “gold standard” Lurie will be raked over the coals all year. Especially when they never hire a legit personnel guy as I suspect.

Yet, like you said, Bradford very likely will NOT be worth what the Eagles are going to sign him for and we’ll likely be stuck in QB limbo for several years until we can move on from him. It is a bad position to be in.

  24. 24 Gian GEAGLE said at 9:25 AM on February 29th, 2016:

The absurdity of it all was the Eagles not demanding that Bradford sigń an extension before making the trade official… That is such a clear example of AMATUER GM’ing,.. Especially when we had the leverage of only competing with the Browns who SAM was adamant about not playing for…. To give up what we did without requiring SAM to sigń an extension, is rock bottom GM skills… Can’t get much worse than that… Trading a 2nd and FOLES for a guy that could end up being a one yeàr rental

  25. 25 Greg Tulino said at 10:12 PM on February 28th, 2016:

I agree with Les. I think the fact that the Eagles upping their offer to Bradford being made public is the Eagles way of telling the fans that they tried, but Bradford and his greedy ass agent want too much money. The Eagles are not known to negotiate thru the media and when they get a deal done with someone the numbers are almost never floated around publicly during negotiations. So I would expect Bradford to hit free agency and ultimately sign for the most money. That’s fine. We were not going to win the Super Bowl with him anyway.

  26. 26 Rambo said at 11:07 PM on February 28th, 2016:

Exactly. Hope it’s not us. Pay Fletcher and sign Chase. F*ck Murray too if he’s really whining. I’m sick of the repeated rumors of it.

  27. 27 Dave said at 6:43 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Chase Daniel was an undrafted free agent. He has thrown 68 passes in 6 years with 1 TD and 1 INT. Just because his agent is putting it out there that he wants to start doesn’t make him a good QB. I’m all for Chase being brought on as a mentor for a rookie, I just don’t want him starting at all. Sanchez with all his faults is a much better QB.

  28. 28 Rambo said at 10:34 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Fair enough to not want Chase. I don’t care for Bradford at a max contract. I understand he’s trying to get the most $$ possible, but what has she done exactly? I’d rather lose with Chase than Sanchez unless Doug can do something different with him. Opinions opinions.

  29. 29 Dave said at 11:25 AM on February 29th, 2016:

If Bradford is gone and a Rookie is to be groomed, I can’t see a situation where Chase is starting. Chase is basically a rookie with a weak arm who sat on the bench for 6 years. I would rather start a true rookie over Chase. Heck, Hackenberg would be a better option than Chase, at lest he has the arm strength to make all the throws.

  30. 30 Rambo said at 11:30 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Well that’s gross. I’ve only seen a few highlights of Chase so I’m not pretending to be an expert. Didn’t he perform well in spot duty? Wonder what makes Pederson say he can be more than a backup. I just don’t want Sam to strap us financially and be mediocre at best.

  31. 31 Dave said at 12:10 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I hear you on Sam and absolutely agree.

Chase only threw 2 balls in 2015. He was 2-2 for 4 yards. He started 1 game in 2014 and 1 game in 2013 and has thrown 77 passes for 464 yards in his career with 1 TD and 1 INT.

For comparison, Sanchez has thrown 2,267 passes for 15,126 yards with 86 TDs and 84 INTs. Chase cannot be expected to be better than Sanchez.

Chase made $3.75M last year while Sanchez made $4.5M last year.

There is a hug disparity with their pedigree, ability, and experience. Chase knows the playbook for Pederson’s West Coast Offense. That is his only upside.

Pederson has talked about a QB needs to lead the team. How could any player on the Eagles follow Chase knowing he has 2 career NFL starts. I think it’s a pipe dream about Chase looking to be a starter in 2016. Chase is nothing more than Sanchez’s poor play leading to the grass is greener on the other side mentality.

Mac/DJ, which were argued over daily, were never deemed “good enough” And that was a fair enough claim. There is not way this group is good enough. Not addressing the WR position – you’re really hoping/praying for solid production. Then again, this team isn’t for this year…its not a finished product…

  45. 45 Media Mike said at 5:21 AM on February 29th, 2016:

I’m looking forward to the combine being over so some folks can look at the results in context with the game tape on guys. I really don’t believe in using the combine to move guys way up because you’ll get Mamula(d) every time, but it is good context to move guys down if they’re struggling in some required physical components for certain positions.

  46. 46 Fufina said at 6:36 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Think sometimes with film having their measurables helps put things in a different context. I can find it hard to work out if a WR is a 4.5 or a 4.4 guy on tape, because it all is contextualized by who is covering them. Been some guys where you look at the college tape and go wow they can take the top off a defense since you see them running away from DB’s on a bunch of plays, and you get to the combine and they run a 4.5, and you realize that they were covered by a bunch of slow DB’s in that tape you watched.

Also SPARQ scores and those family of analytics generated by combine performance actually have pretty good correlation to elite NFL production at a range of positions, so are a legitimate tool to use in the evaluation process.

  47. 47 eagleyankfan said at 7:37 AM on February 29th, 2016:

I’ll 1/2 agree with you about this because there’s a flip side. What about the players that are always slower “by measurable” but always seem to be open? Speed doesn’t paint a whole picture as to what a wr can do. Speed doesn’t = elite.
….. in your example — I’d watch other wr’s against those DB’s to get a better idea on the caliber of those DB’s. Or if I’m deciding between wr’s, I’d find common opponent (if possible).

  48. 48 Fufina said at 9:02 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Oh i agree different players have different skill sets. Worrying about Treadwells 40 time makes no sense. He does not separate that way so worrying about a 4.6 time makes no sense, although if he ran a ‘fast’ 4.50 it would add extra value to him.

But it is a useful tool to take back to watching players – and helps you focus in on specific questions. If a WR runs 4.7, but is always open, i need to be really clear how he does it and that it is replicatable at the NFL level.

  49. 49 ChoTime said at 9:18 AM on February 29th, 2016:

Sounds like the “old man skills argument”, that if a player’s success is based on that instead of elite athletic ability, then his athletic abilities can be ignored. However, this seems to be bunk. What usually happens is, the limited guys have short careers because when they begin to decline, they reach the point where they are simply outclassed. It’s the freaks who can have long careers, because even after aging, they still are still strong and fast enough to compete in the big league.

QBs and kickers seem immune 🙂

    Haven’t watched him.

Prelim googling reveals he was a former 2 star, declared after junior year. WR as a Freshman. Only had 1 start prior to this year. Seems like Clemson pretty much just stuck him deep and used his speed as deterrent.

Explains why no one has watched him yet. Seems like he’s pretty raw too.

Will be interesting to watch some tape on him. Don’t love guys who play cerebral positions declaring with so few starts. Probably just a HWS day 3 guy lottery ticket.

Unless the film is pretty good I’m not terribly interested.

Goff is the most exciting for 2016… i would prefer Lynch/Wentz in 2-3 years time since they have bigger upsides with better arms and bodies for handling an NFL beating.

The comp i like for Goff is Matty Ice… he is not the problem but i am not sure he is the solution either for a team. Needs a great team around him to get it done.

Paxton needs to end up behind a veteran like Rivers, Romo, Bradford, where he can really sit for two, even three years before being thrust in the starting role… If he goes somewhere like Cleveland or San Fran where he will be rushed onto the field at some point, it will be a big diservice to that kid…. If he can be drafted in an Osweiler situation where he can sit and learn multiple seasons, he can grow into a player…
    ..
But he has a long way to go before he should start at the pro level

  85. 85 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:08 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Im not a fan of this class Of QBs, but I would be much much more willing to see them spend picks on this class of Raw QBs if we have Bradford starting which puts the kid we draft in a Healthy situation giving him his best chance to succeed… Im not sold on these kids as is, I damn sure don’t want to see them drafted to a team that is starting sanchez or Chase Daniel, by week 5 next year this city will threaten to Burn the Linc to the ground if the Eagles don’t bench Chase and put the kid in..
    ..
Today it’s easy for fans to say, we can draft a QB and leave him on the bench for a year and start Chase or Sanchez, but by week 5 this city will no longer tolerate Chase or Sanchez as the starting QB
    ,,
Think we have a way Better chance of drafting a Franchise QB if we put him in an Osweier situation where he can sit and learn for years
    .,
People make it out to be Bradford vs Drafting a QB early, but really we NEED Both! I don’t particularly like the QBs in this draft, but even if we sign Braford, if there is a QB Pederspn and the coaches love at 13, I hope we draft them! But bradford gives us the luxury of not forcing a QB in this draft. If they wait to take a guy in round 5, and draft a QB early in next years draft, im fine with that also

I don’t care if we have Cam Newton in his prime, NEVER pass on a guy you believe will end up being a Franchise QB… Never pass on Qbs you believe in regardless of your QB situatiion

Id love to get SAM as cheap as possible, but a few extra mil sound like a dumb reason to not have a starting QB… The difference between paying SAM 13mil and 18mil, is like being able to afford one less 4mil a year veteran like MEco, Sproles, Mathis type veteran that we would have to replace with a cheap rookie contract… 1 less veteran sounds like a dumb reason to not have a QB and be forced to draft out of Desperatipn…don’t care about the money, I care about having an escape clause after two or three years. Fortunately that’s a staple of Roseman regime. He isn’t handing out any deals that we can’t get out of until year 5
    ..
Do I really give a crap if the Eagles pay SAM 13mil and keep Sanchez, or if we pay SAM 18mil and replace SsNchez with a rookie contract? Why would I care about Sanchez’s fate?

This is a kid whos career has been stolen from him by injuries… He sure seemed pretty adamant about not wanting to be traded to the Brows, which on some level does Show that it’s not ALL just about the pay check.
    ..
I think he is one of the last guys that would take this game for Grated, espcialy after he just proved to himself that he could get thru a season. And maybe actually finally be ready to have an NFL career
    ..
It’s not like we are franchising him and forcing him to be here,.. If he signs with us, im sure he isn’t FORCED To.
    ..
If Bradford is done caring about the game and has reached the poïnt where money is his ONLY motivation, considering he is sitting on a Fortune already, I would think that he would be looking for a short term deal, play his value up a bit more, hope to become a free agent in a year where there is a bigger market for his services… He has the financial security to Gamble on his ability to play his value up a bit more…even if he signs a short deal and does play well, it’s not like the Eagles wouldn’t want to pay him to keep him… Im sure the Eagles would LOVE Bradford to play his way into a 20mil a year payday, we would be thrilled to give it to him if he earns it……
    .
If they are discussing a 5yr deal, im sure Roseman will be protected with the ability to get out of it after two or three years, so if im Bradford, might as well just sigń a two or 3 year deal. If I pan out and finally live up to my potential, im sure the Eagles will want to extend me AFER two years anyway.
    ..
I don’t see THS big QB market waiting for him where some team will give him 6yrs, 50mil GUARENTEED to steal him from us… Instead of taking a 5yr deal that the team can get out of after year two or three, might as well sigń a deal HE can get out of after two, three years and hope he played his way up to one more big pay day at the age of 31…
    ..
Unless we tag him, if he signs I assume it means he WANTS to stay… It’s not like Demarco Murray who didn’t have this big bank account, and after all the mileage his body accumulated, he had to be soley motivated by signing a deal that would give him financial security, since he knew it could be his last chamce at a big pay day… He never got his money worth in Dallas for how much they used him,

Just listened to Condon’s interview on Sirius XM, and he seemed really focused on the last seven games putting Bradford into the top 10 category. I get he is his agent, but I think you cannot just ignore the entire body of work. I am actually in support of bringing Sam back. But for a guy that has already made 78M and accomplished a little over nothing, why can you not work out a deal in the fair range?

  111. 111 botto said at 2:40 PM on February 29th, 2016:

good point but his best 7 games don’t actually come close to top 10 unfortunately. I like Sam and think he could be good, why? I don’t know, he’s never been that good before, but he showed some flashed last year, and he hadn’t played in a long time so… there’s a chance.
also, it’s not fair to say he made a lot of money already so take less, that’s not how it works in America.

  112. 112 Dave said at 2:46 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I think its more about the idea that when trying the get the most money possible, the longer Condon waits, the more his leverage he has, up until free agency. Once free agency starts, then he could possibly gain or lose money based upon interest, or lack thereof, from other teams.

The two most likely scenarios for him resigning are before 4:00PM tomorrow or the day before free agency begins. Once free agency starts, who knows what will happen.

  113. 113 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:58 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Going into the season, the popular narrative was that the team would have to carry SAM early in the season while he shaked some rust off and got comfortabke in a new offense with a new team, especially when he wasn’t even cleared to practice Til August 1st
    .,
Forget the agent, and the contract talk for a second, going into this year, almost everyone assumed that the second half of the season would show who SAMs true ability more than what he showed the first half of the season…. Now we want to forget about this fact because it suits us in the negotiations?
    ..
Not to mention, the kid was still improving when the season ended. I don’t even care to talk about his last 7 games, because I want to extend him because I know he is still capable of MORE than he showed those last 7 games…if I thought SAM was maxed out, I wouldn’t want him back… Im convinced he is capable of more than ANYTHING he showed this past season. I don’t even believe it’s possible to see a QBs best his first year in a new offense. And when you add in the fact that he was playing with teammates he was just getting to know, and didn’t have an offseason only being fully cleared on August 1st, regardless what anyone thinks of SAM’s last 7 games, if they are being honest they know he is capable of more… He was still improving when the season end. Cant dispute that..
    ..
Last offseason we expected to not see SAM really get comfortable Til the second half of the season, now we want to hold that against Bradford camp because it’s convenient to our negotiations? His agent is right,,, the first half of the season doesn’t comments close to reflecting what this QB is capable of.. And if we pay him, it’s not because of what he did those last 7 games, it’s because we think he is even capable of More. So his agent is actually right….. Now if you don’t trusts his body and hold durability against him, THATS FAIR… If the Eagles thought they Saw What SAM was capable of those first 8 games, they wouldn’t even be offering him an extension..

  114. 114 Nick C said at 3:25 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I have already said I would like Sam back. But if you listened to the interview, it was interesting how the first half of the season Condon thought Sam was average and the last seven games he considered Sam a superstar. I do not think you can pay him superstar money based on seven games (a few of those being against historically horrible secondaries). I am all for Sam in the 15-18 range; as you have said what is an extra 3M to keep a decent QB. But once those conversations get north of 20M (if that what Condon truly thinks he deserves), I balk at the price tag.

  115. 115 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:05 PM on February 29th, 2016:

No dsagreement from me… Hopefully he continues to improve. All he has to do is stay healthy, and Im sure he will reach new heights. Stay Healthy, work to reach his potential and im sure the Eagles will be more than happy to renegotiate in two years and backup the Brinks truck if he ends up being as good as they think he can… We won’t let him steal money, but if he earns it, we will gladly shower him with top QB dollars… And I expect him to be that type of QB if he can stay healthy for two years…

  116. 116 FairOaks said at 5:02 PM on February 29th, 2016:

20M as an average over a long-term contract is fine — the first year or two should be 15-18 hopefully though (cap-wise). The franchise tag was 19 million though so if they were willing to pay that on a long-term deal, they would have tagged him.

Bradford was significantly worse than average the first half of the year. The last seven games he was probably sniffing top 10, but you’d like for him to prove that over full seasons before buying in to superstar money (and top 10 isn’t necessarily superstar — we are probably hoping for Matthew Stafford or Kirk Cousins numbers, really).

But, that’s an agent’s job. He’s trying to *get* the superstar level contract offer, deserved or not.

So IF we get Sam back (I am always a skeptic so it is still a big IF) how would you guys feel about this scenario? This isn’t my original wishlist but we have some time to kill and I wanted to get some additional thoughts:
    1. Cut Sanchez: Sam’s figure will be high. We will need to create some cap room for some free agency additions. Seek QB backup potentially early in draft.
    2. Trade Connor Barwin for cap relief: It is not worth it to release him, but trading him would save us 6.1M; maybe we could trade him and a 3rd for an early 2nd? Values are tough to predict but I still think he could represent some good value to a 3-4 team especially.
    3. Trade Bennie Logan: Not many are going to like this one. But he is still on his rookie contract (cheap 3rd round at that). If we could get a low 2nd/high 3rd for him in a draft VERY DEEP at DT, I may take it.
    4. Trade Murray for a bag of peanuts if someone will take him: I don’t necessarily buy that he is disgruntled or wants to go back to Dallas. I think that was our way of putting him on the trade block. But we just have way too many resources tied up in the RB position. This is another position of strength in this draft.
    5. *This is a BIG IF*: If we could grab Osemele (sp?) in free agency, I think it could be time to move on from Jason Peters. We could shift Lane over, who is already making LT money. Also try and grab a mid range guard
    6. If we dont make a tackle splash in FA, grab a top tier G. Another one in the draft in the first 3 rounds (plus OL depth later on) should allow us to never seeing Tobin earn a -10 PFF rating ever again.
    7. We have a giant hole at S. Stay away from Weddle! Iloka, Gipson, McLeod would suffice

A lot of people will favor trading a Sproles as a way for salary relief. However, I do not believe Sproles has any trade value. And I do not care for just releasing him. If someone is not killing our cap situation, I am not for giving them away for no value (I am looking at you, Chip)

Go into the draft for true BPA. We need impact players and solid depth additions. I am tired of reaching for mediocre and average players. We need an influx of talent in all areas.

  130. 130 scratcherk said at 3:39 PM on February 29th, 2016:

  131. 131 Nick C said at 3:44 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Yeah it was a tough call for me as well. I thought of it this way: Fletcher Cox is about to strike a megadeal by the end of the offseason. We already have large contracts on the DL with Graham, Curry, Barwin and will-be Cox. I think we need to off-set this position cap wise with some rookie contracts. If we can get something of good value for him right before his contract year, this year, it would be advantageous to do so at this point for me. I am sorry I just do not see us as contenders this year. Go out, have a solid free agency and grab some impact player(s) in the draft, and next year I believe we could really compete. Get those rookies assimilated, get another year for our young wideouts, build up the line, determine what we actually have in the linebacking core and secondary in the new schemes.

    1) Sure Hope So… Id dance Naked in the street if a team like the Browns, Niners, Cowboys, or Texans gave us a 6th round pick for Sanchez and our 7th rounder… Not sure trading him is realistic but I have seen crazier ish.. But YES, I sure hope his days in Philly are Over!
    .
    2) Not Realistic
    .
    3) Not Realistic (at least for this year)
    .
    4) I WISH… But this is entirely Up to Demarco, I don’t think anyone takes him unless he renegotiated his deal.. Hopefully Murray and some other team can reach common ground.. What we get in return is not a factor. We would do it for the cap relief… Being able to trade Murray would be FANTASTIC. Fingers crossed
    .
    5) Don’t think Osmele is realistic. He wants like 10mil a year. I also think Safety is our biggest Free Agent priority… We still may be able to also sigń a Guard, but Its not going to be the most expensive guy on the market, which sucks because I LOVE OSMELE… I could even see the Eagles fix the OL via the draft and not even sigń a FA lineman…. One way or another, im sure the OL will be adequately addressed
    .
    6) Think Tobin is Gone. gardner and Barbe are both better, and im sure we draft at least 2 Lineman… Doubt Tobin will be back this year… ideall we draft a future RT who can start his career at Guard, and then draft another OL who has been a guard his entire life. If we really get lucky, this player will also have Center versatility but I’m not banking on it..
    ..
    7) Think Safety will be #1 on our FA needs, but we won’t be interested in Weddle. For starters he won’t be cheap. Why would we pass on signing 26yr old Studs like ILLOKA, to pay for a guy that we will have to replace in a year or two and be right back to needing a safety… Don’t think we have to worry about Weddle, but hopefully it will be ILLOKA. Yes I know OL is. Serious need, but think it will be easier to draft starting OL upgrades and Pay for a Safety, than it is to find a safety that can start immediately in the draft
    ..
    Just my thoughts…

Id add Taylor Hart and Sturgis to list of guys I hope we trade away

Any chance that after we sigń Bradford, we can cut/trade sanchez (Niners?) and sigń Chase to a deal THATs cheaper than what we are paying Sanchez?
    ..
Even with SAM and Chase, I would hope that we draft a QB if one we believe in is available to be our #3 QB
    .
chase is the type who will help prepare our starting QB and help mentor the rookie QB… It’s never a bad thing to have a QB that already knows a lot of the new coaches offense… To consider Chase an option to replace Bradford Id ABSURD! But Chase as replacement for Sanchez appeals to me..
    ..
No idea what type of Money chase would get as a backup, any chance it would be cheaper than what we are scheduled to pay Sanchez?

  134. 134 Nick C said at 3:20 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I think Chase will be looking to go to a team with a chance to compete for their starting role. IMO, that would involve more than Sanchez money.

  135. 135 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:42 PM on February 29th, 2016:

You may be right….personally, I think the best he can hope for is a team letting him start 8 games, and then bench Chase for a rookie… If that’s the role he would have to accept, maybe signing on to backup a QB with durability concerns like Bradford or Romo may be more appealing than being a QB babysitter for half a season.
    .
Not sure where a 5″11 backup who turns 30 in October and has thrown 1 career TD gets off thinking that a team will legitimately łet him to compete for a Starting QB spot, and even if he gets that opportunity, most likely its a temporary starting QB spot until a team is ready to play a young QB.. What’s the chances of him ending up being some teams starter for multiple seasons? Removing money from the equation for a second, backing up a QB with durability concerns on a team that’s trying to win NOW like the Cowboys may provide him with the best opportunity… Backing up Romo, may end up providing him a chance to start more games than he would if he backs up someone like Goff… But you could be right,
    ..
Im not sure anyone outside of Philly views him as a potential starter… I would think Sanchez has more trade value league wide than Chase, lol

Take the link to Cowherd just to have something to discuss. What are your best cases, middle ground and worst cases for the Top QBs in this class? I don’t care about Cook that much, but I’m interested in Goff, Wentz and Lynch.

I personally don’t know them enough to play this game, but I’d be interested to hear what you think.

    Goff:
    High: Drew Brees
    Middle: Jay Cutler

    Wentz:
    High: Big Ben/Bortles
    Middle: Healthy Culpepper
    Low: Blaine Gabbert

    Lynch:
    High: Flacco
Middle: Good version of Josh Freeman
    Low: Ryan Mallet

  140. 140 D3FB said at 5:24 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I mean I think high is probably more similar to Wentz’s high, but for the sake of diversity and the fact that I think Wentz is probably a tad more likely to reach them I went with Flacco.

Before he stopped giving a shit Freeman was pretty decent.

Mallet makes sense to me because there’s an element of aloofness I can’t quiet place, but he’ll kick around the league for a while because every QB coach with a pulse will want to fix him.

  141. 141 Insomniac said at 5:35 PM on February 29th, 2016:

It’s because he’s a Cowgirls fan. No one truly understands them.

  142. 142 Dominik said at 5:35 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I’m surprised by Cutler as your middle for Goff. Cutler has a huge arm, but nothing else (pointedly), while after all I saw (again: I’m no expert) and read about Goff, he doesn’t has the best arm (he can make all the throws, though), but is accurate and has a quick release. Brees makes a lot of sense in that regard as a high, like Ryan does (Cowherd used Ryan as high, but I read the Ryan comparison a lot).

I’m a little bit surprised about Flacco as high for Lynch, too, since I read that his arm is good, not great, while Flacco has one of the best arms in football. But it makes some sense because they are both very large. Flacco is more athletic than people give him credit for (which is why he was so good in Kubiaks scheme, I think he had the best regular season of his career). Lynch should be a bit more athletic, though, at least I think.

    Thanks for your input!

  143. 143 D3FB said at 5:39 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Cutler was more about both played with very little talent in college in tough conferences, and unlike guys on bad teams in bad conferences didn’t win a zillion games
    .

Stylistically different QBs but similar background (same way Wentz gets Flacco comps cuz of FCS)

  144. 144 Fufina said at 6:15 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Think Lynch has an inconsistent arm because of footwork issues. If he is set and in the pocket and steps into the throw and he puts his full body into it he fires a rocket. Most of the time he does it all with just his arm strength and it looks like a good but not spectacular arm.

Think IF and that is an if, he gets his footwork together Lynch has about as big an arm as anyone in the league.

I like the Flacco comp for Lynch a lot, but question if that is his ‘ceiling’. Think Flacco has not reached his potential, and may well never do so, but if Lynch develops a better feel for the game then he has the tools to be an even better QB.

  145. 145 Dominik said at 7:45 AM on March 1st, 2016:

To me, Flacco is a top 10 QB, even though he doesn’t show it week in and week out in the reg season. But when they get in the playoffs, and the Ravens usually get there, there aren’t that many QBs I’d rather have leading my team. He has a top 3 arm, which he shows on deep shots a lot, which is very valuable in January, especially in the AFC North. And he’s clutch.

People tend to forget how close the Ravens were to beating the Patriots in the AFC CCG, before the Patriots went on and beat the Seahawks. It’s not just the SB year for Flacco, imo. Altough I did like him more in Kubiaks scheme, because of all those bootleg action Flacco is really good at.

I get why people aren’t freaking out about Lynch when they hear Flacco, but in my book, it’s a pretty big compliment.

Although It would kind of suck to see Dallas get the most QB ready QB in the draft in Goff, with the chance of romo playing 16 games being so slim, but we can always count on good OL Jerry to manage to screw it up
    ..
Curious to see who is dumber in the top 5, Cleveland or Jerruh?

  149. 149 Dominik said at 7:49 AM on March 1st, 2016:

Hue Jackson said he believes hand size is important and Goff has small hands at 9”. We know hand size is a pretty big deal for Chip.

You know who has also 9” hands? Tony Romo. Scares me a little, to be honest with you. One would assume the Cowboys doesn’t care that much about it, when their Franchise QB never had a problem with it.

But on the other hand, maybe Jerry really believes in 4 more years for Romo, and maybe he doesn’t let Stephen make another decision. I’d be in it, for sure.

Be hype to see Browns, Cowboys and Niners all take a QB in the top 10 like the draft you posted the link to

  196. 196 Media Mike said at 6:33 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I know he’s talking about that, I just don’t consider Lynch a top prospect.

  197. 197 Gian GEAGLE said at 6:34 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Don’t love the kid either, so it be pretty pumped to see him go top 12

  198. 198 Media Mike said at 6:32 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Not to thread jack, but it sucks the Flyers weren’t able to make any trades today. They still need to clear out some dead contract weight for 16-17 to sign a top 6 winger, clear out some players to make roster spots for Provorov and Konecny, and figure out what is going on with Medvedev and Gagner who are free agents at the end of this year.

I can deal with not getting guys like Streit and Read traded because we can move them for cap space in the off-season, but I’ll be sick to my stomach if Gagner and Medvedev walk for nothing as free agents and we didn’t get anything for them at the deadline.

I trust Hexy long-term, but today sucked. I wanted assets.

  199. 199 Rambler said at 6:38 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Agreed, was hoping for some salary clearing and picks in return. But I do trust that Hexy was working the phones hard. Interesting that nothing materialized.

  200. 200 Media Mike said at 6:42 PM on February 29th, 2016:

And because Hexy referenced not wanting to take anything away from the team in a playoff run, they now have an obligation to actually make the playoffs.

  201. 201 Rambler said at 6:45 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Was thinking the same thing. Obviously it is just positive spin by Hexy, because you know he wanted to unload some of these guys. But now the team needs to respond and make a decent playoff push.

  202. 202 RC5000 said at 6:46 PM on February 29th, 2016:

    That’s Ed Snider for ya.

  203. 203 Media Mike said at 6:46 PM on February 29th, 2016:

ha ha ha ha. Snider would have traded away the entire farm today.

  204. 204 ACViking said at 6:47 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Maybe if a healthy Eric Lindros were available?

  205. 205 Media Mike said at 6:48 PM on February 29th, 2016:

As a teenager, I was so pumped when they got him. Shame it ended the way it did.

  206. 206 ACViking said at 6:52 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Fantastic day spoiled by the Rangers’ claim they had acquired his rights.

Day of the arbitrator’s ruling nearly as good

  207. 207 Media Mike said at 6:54 PM on February 29th, 2016:

    True.

  208. 208 RC5000 said at 6:45 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I don’t know what did you expect to get for crappy rental players…6th or 7th rounder? Teams had to have cap space too.

  209. 209 Media Mike said at 6:45 PM on February 29th, 2016:

They’ve produced 3rd rounders for crappy rental players like Grossmann and Mezajaros; so something like that.

  210. 210 RC5000 said at 6:52 PM on February 29th, 2016:

True I don’t know how they got that for Meszaros.

  211. 211 Media Mike said at 6:56 PM on February 29th, 2016:

So if you got that for Mez……………….

there always seems to be teams overpaying for 4th/5th/6th D men during a playoff run. Maybe not enough teams suffered big enough injuries to compel them to trade for guys today. They Flyers should punish the NHL for that by ending the career of multiple Penguins next time we play the.

  212. 212 Nailed It! said at 6:46 PM on February 29th, 2016:

This trade deadline was not a sellers market. I am sure he could have shipped some pieces but with little value. Hexy has earned our trust with what he had done so far, such a tough position for him in the midst of the playoff hunt and knowing if we get there we are not legit contenders. So happy not mortgaging the future for an 8th seed.

  213. 213 Media Mike said at 6:48 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I’m totally down with not mortgaging the future for an 8 seed by adding guys, but I’m dumbfounded that there weren’t more teams buying considering how many are in the playoff mix.

  214. 214 Nailed It! said at 6:50 PM on February 29th, 2016:

That was really confusing I agree. Shocked a Boston or Dallas or Florida not at least calling about Med or Streit. All those teams lack scoring on D at least those guys would give you a scoring bump on the 3rd pair.

  215. 215 Media Mike said at 6:51 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Exactly. But at least you can still move Streit this offseason. And that would allow you resign Medvedev for a year or two, thus making not trading him today not a big deal.

  216. 216 Nailed It! said at 6:56 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Cannot wait for the start of next season. Give me a
    Ghost-MDZ
Prov-Gudas (I hate Gudas but he will prob be here)
    Med-Sanheim
    Morin-Hagg

Let the kids figure it out in the NHL and win the cup
    17-18

  217. 217 Media Mike said at 6:57 PM on February 29th, 2016:

So I see you traded Schultz in the final year of his deal!

And I don’t think they’ll let Sandhiem up here that fast. I also read Morin needs another year of AHL seasoning.

But MDZ, Ghost, Provorov, Manning, Gudas, MacDonald, Schultz, and Medvedev seem like the most likely 8 if you can get Streit moved.

  218. 218 Nailed It! said at 6:59 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Sorry, this is my orange colored glasses fully on. I figured Schultz could get the Mcdonald treatment and play in the AHL as teh kids learned in the NHL. I agree most of the kids could use more time but for the first 8 games of next year I wanna see the yoots up playing with the big boys.

  219. 219 Media Mike said at 7:01 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Konecny and Provorov are the two most likely next guys I think from what I’ve read.

  220. 220 ACViking said at 7:04 PM on February 29th, 2016:

NHL entry draft is still harder to figure than the NFL draft.

But couldn’t believe Konecny slid in Rd 1 . . . and Hexy was able to get him.

  221. 221 Nailed It! said at 7:09 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Yeah i agree. But a guy can dream.
Next year for forwards I would like to see
    Jake-G-Schenn
    Konecny-Coots-Simmer
    Laughts-Cousins-Raffl
    Gagner-Weal-One of the Lehigh boys.

  222. 222 Media Mike said at 7:12 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Konecny is really a center I believe. That makes some other stuff interesting. I think we’re really one top 6 winger short of what I can project as the eventual best team we can grow into.

  223. 223 Nailed It! said at 7:13 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I believe he gets moved to a wing to take advantage of his speed. Plus we have such a ridiculous log jam at center already.

  224. 224 RobNE said at 6:35 PM on February 29th, 2016:

With Brady extension would anyone here want Jimmy G?

  225. 225 Media Mike said at 6:36 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Eh. Maybe after the draft if we didn’t get a guy I like there.

  226. 226 RobNE said at 7:18 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Maybe chip trades for him and the 49ers pass on drafting one.

  227. 227 A_T_G said at 6:40 PM on February 29th, 2016:

    That sounds like “Good News.”

  232. 232 daveH said at 6:55 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Im excited to see who we draft

  233. 233 Media Mike said at 7:00 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I was going to put up a simulated draft of good players, but I’ve been on hiatus with that until the combine dust settles and these guys get re-ranked.

  234. 234 daveH said at 8:09 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Seems O line has more tap natch prospects .. so does that mean spend high picks to get 2 of th best or grab 3 late round value guys since injury reality is probably 40 % ?

  235. 235 Media Mike said at 7:08 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Have you folks settled on any player we’d take that would get you throwing stuff at the TV if they took him in round 1?

Noah Spence, Taylor Decker, and Paxton Lynch would have me livid.

  236. 236 Fufina said at 7:18 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Reaching on an OL (not Tunsil/Stanley) or Treadwell to be honest. Just do not see them as being value at 13. Treadwell just does not wow me on film, and i do not think he is a great fit as a counter point to our best WR we have already in Matthews, and i am not willing to give up on Agholor yet.

I am part of QB or trade down, so many guys i really like in the 2nd, and i honestly do not see a huge difference in talent levels between pick 13 and pick 40 in terms of upside. Trade back get a 2nd, and get a OL late 1st and your pick of the 3-4 first round DT’s that slide into the 2nd round.

That changes if a top 6-7 prospect slides into our lap ofc, which could happen if 3 QB’s go and teams address needs.

  237. 237 RC5000 said at 7:26 PM on February 29th, 2016:

You’re never going to find a QB.

No I want Lynch if they like him especially. He could be the future.
He’s great when he’s on. His bucket throws are beyoutifull. You just need patience. Hopefully.

I don’t want Decker either. I’m nervous about Treadwell. I look for outliers at combine. Treadwell’s vert was disappointing.

Spence’s 40 is not what you want. I think he’s going later probably. I don’t like going by combine numbers but he has red flags also so I think you have to be almost flawless everywhere else and even then it may not be enough to get you in top 10 or 15.

  238. 238 Media Mike said at 7:33 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Lynch struck me as a poor prospect via what I saw him do the two times I watched him; vs. Temple and vs. Auburn. I’m not a fan.

If they really want a QB from this draft, then I’m good with trading some future picks to go up and get Goff.

  239. 239 Fufina said at 7:51 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Watch a game where he and his team isnt horribly injured. Looks like an entirely different player if you put on the ol miss tape. Although i do not think he (nor the offence) are going to ever be to your taste.

  240. 240 Media Mike said at 7:52 PM on February 29th, 2016:

    I believe you’re correct.

  241. 241 Dave said at 7:51 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Oh boy, put on some other games and he is absolutely a stud. Watch the highlights against #13 Ole Miss and you can see the talent against a good team.

Seriously, you watched his 2 bad games of the year and are making a judgement call based on that? I can pick out Tom Brady’s 2 worst games of this year and if you didn’t know anything about him, you would think he is a terrible QB.

  242. 242 Media Mike said at 7:52 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I’m just not generally a fan of how he plays the game. I’ve seen him in other spurts as well. I’m just not sold on him as a franchise QB.

  243. 243 Dave said at 7:53 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Not to be ignorant, but what do you mean by how he plays the game?

  244. 244 Media Mike said at 7:59 PM on February 29th, 2016:

The manner in which Memphis had their offense constructed. Fufina’s below comment is good context about it not being to my taste.

  245. 245 Dave said at 8:41 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Huh, can’t say I ever disliked a player based on the system they played in college. To each is own.

  246. 246 RC5000 said at 7:56 PM on February 29th, 2016:

I watched Goff play poorly against Utah and against Stanford mostly what he did was dink and dunk like Foles, Alex Smith. But I watched many of his games and I like (not love) Goff.

But you haven’t watched Lynch besides that?

He has had realky good games and really gad games but there’s talent so if they like him, they know much more than you going by his worst two games.

He’s not a sure thing that is true but he has a good arm, good escapability. He needs good coaching. He’s talented. Goff isn’t a sure top QB.

  247. 247 Media Mike said at 8:01 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Goff was still going through progressions vs. Utah and pushing the ball (although to the wrong team) down the field. I just generally get a sense that Goff can do real NFL things at QB whereas I don’t get that comfort from Lynch.

  248. 248 RC5000 said at 8:10 PM on February 29th, 2016:

Any monkey can go through progressions. Sanchez can do that.

  249. 249 Media Mike said at 8:17 PM on February 29th, 2016:

We’ll have to disagree on that.
