2016 Free Agency Preview

Posted: March 7th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 767 Comments »

The Eagles can begin talking to agents on Monday. They can’t make any moves until Wednesday. Let’s take a look at what the team needs and what is available.

The goal is to improve the team by plugging some holes in the starting lineup and adding depth to the roster. With the shift in offensive and defensive schemes there could be more depth moves than normal. I’m not going to get into cap space and projected contracts. The Eagles have enough money to add a key player or two, but they can’t compete with some of the teams that have huge money available. Remember that Howie Roseman trained under the greatest capologist of them all, Joe Banner. Roseman knows how to structure contracts creatively. He might be willing to cut a player or two if it helps. Roseman won’t do anything financially unsound. I can’t guarantee all the signings will pan out exactly as planned, but I absolutely trust Roseman when it comes to making smart deals.

OG

I don’t see the Eagles going after a lot of starters, but I do expect them to add a starting OG. Here are some of the possible targets.

Kelechi Osemele – Ravens – The top guard on the market. I don’t see the Eagles pursuing him because of his reported price tag of more than $10M per season. Osemele is a good player, especially in the run game, but I don’t think he’s the kind of dominant blocker you hand a blank check to.

Alex Boone – Niners – Really good player. Huge at 6-7, 330, but not just a power guy. Moves surprisingly well for his size. If age wasn’t a concern (about to turn 29), would definitely be my top choice for the Eagles. 4-year starter at LG who could be plugged into the Eagles lineup right away and would improve the OL. I really enjoyed watching his tape. Not just a good run blocker, but impressed me with pass protection. Also smart. Showed good awareness and knew who to block.

Jeff Allen – Chiefs – I wondered if Allen would be anything more than a convenient target because of his ties to Doug Pederson. He was. Very much enjoyed watching him. Saw games where he started at RT and LG. That versatility is a good thing, as the Eagles have dealt with injuries up front the past two years. Allen just turned 26 and is in the prime of his career. He has solid size at 6-4, 306.

The concern with Allen is durability. He played 16 games as a rookie, but has missed time in the other years. Played in 12 games last year, with 8 starts. I think he should be a primary target for the Eagles because he has played for Pederson and won’t cost a fortune. Allen also has good intangibles. He plays with an edge, which is something to be valued in an OL. Beyond the Pederson connection, Allen played for Eugene Chung in KC and he is now the assistant OL coach in Philly.

Brandon Brooks – Texans – The starting RG for Houston for the past 3 seasons. Big man at 6-5, 343. Has good feet and moves well. Turns 27 this summer. Fairly durable, having started 44 of the past 48 games. At the right price, is a very attractive target. Good player and still has upside. Only problem is that I think he could get a huge deal. Not sure he’s worth megabucks. I would expect the Eagles to talk to his agent. Brooks combination of age, size, ability and upside make him an attractive target. If the price is right, could be a very good signing. My one issue with him is that he’s sloppy with his hands. Tends to get grabby at times.

J.R. Sweezy – Seahawks – Former college DT has played 49 games at OG in the NFL and has developed into a terrific run blocker. Athletic blocker goes 6-5, 296. Watch this video to know all you need to about the kind of player Sweezy is.

Sweezy isn’t a great pass blocker. Will turn 27 in April so there is still a chance for him to get better. Might not be a great fit in Pederson’s offense, depending on what they want. Very fun player to watch. Should have a reasonable price tag.

Other players of possible interest:

Ramon Foster – Steelers – Another left guard with good size, but Foster is less athletic than the others. He just turned 30 and has started for the past five seasons.

Mike Harris – Vikings – Just finished his first season as a full-time starter. Has some potential, but is hardly a sure thing. Played for the Chargers when Frank Reich was there so there is a connection to him. 6-5, 310.

Geoff Schwartz – Giants – Experienced blocker who isn’t going to wow anyone, but has been an effective starter. Played RG last year.

Jahri Evans – Saints – Philly native and former Pro Bowl OG.  Would be a nice story to have him come home, but Evans is on the decline. Could be a good fit for a year or two if the Eagles can’t land one of the other free agents. More of a phone booth player these days. If Pederson wants his OL pulling, moving and blocking in space, Evans wouldn’t be a good fit.

*****

SAFETY

NFL insider Jason La Canfora thinks the Eagles could be in play for a high-end Safety. The team needs a starter opposite of Malcolm Jenkins and there are some good options.

George Iloka – Bengals – Big (6-4, 225), young (about to turn 26) and a good fit for the new scheme. There is a dearth of good Safeties in the NFL so Iloka could be in for a major payday. Not much of a playmaker (5 career INTs and 2 FFs), and that has to be factored in. Covers well and a good run defender. Smart. Comes up aggressively vs the run, but stays under control.

Eric Weddle – Chargers – I loved him coming out of Utah and I’ve enjoyed watching him over the years. Weddle is 31 and on the decline. Production has fallen off and he’s not an overly physical player. Weddle is still smart and a good tackler. Would be ideal for a creative coach who likes to move his DBs around a lot. I don’t think he’d be a great fit with Jim Schwartz. Still, he is a talented veteran S.

Tashaun Gipson – Browns – Has 14 career interceptions and is only 25 years old. That’s a pretty good description for a free agent DB. Gipson’s tape doesn’t match his stats. Solid young player, but not an impact DB. Sounds like he is looking for a big contract. If the money doesn’t pan out, might be of interest. Coaches do love DBs who have a nose for the ball.

Rodney McLeod – Rams – Love watching this guy play. Lacks ideal size at 5-10, 195, but he is a big hitter. Had 3 FFs last year (8 in his career). Rams tend to line him up deep. Comes down aggressively vs the run. Finished third on the team in tackles. Also shows good range in the pass game. Could be a great value signing.

Reggie Nelson – Bengals – Older than Father Time, but is coming off an 8-INT season. Has 30 picks over his 9-year career. Very good blitzer. The Bengals have him rush the passer a lot. Can be an erratic tackler. I don’t see why the Eagles would go after a 33-year old S, but he is still a good player.

Other players of possible interest:

Michael Griffin – Titans – 31-year old S, but might be of interest since he played for Jim Schwartz in TEN. Declining player, but still finished second on the Titans in tackles. Could make sense if the team wants a veteran to play while they develop a young player. Griffin knows the system and would come at a reasonable price.

Tyvon Branch – Chiefs – Was a role player for KC last year. Started for the Raiders prior to that. 30-years old and he’s never been much of a playmaker. Pederson knows him from last year. Branch would be a veteran to come in cheap and compete for a job.

Rahim Moore – Texans – Played for DBs coach Cory Undlin in Denver. Signed with Houston last year and had a very disappointing season. Lost his starting job. I don’t think he’ll be a primary target, but could be a backup option if things don’t work out with other players.

*****

WR

The Eagles need help at receiver, whether it comes from FA or the draft. Because they are already young at the position, I tend to think they’ll look to add a veteran player.

Rueben Randle – Giants – When I first saw his name, I had negative thoughts. He has been somewhat of an underachiever in the NFL. But if you take a look, he is a player on the rise. Posted career high numbers in 2014, 71-938. Those totals went down a bit last year, but had career high 8 TDs. Good size and he can make tough catches. Interesting target.

Mohamed Sanu – Bengals – Sanu would be a terrific fit in the WCO. He is outstanding with the ball in his hands. CIN valued that so much that they fed him the ball on reverses and even Wildcat plays. Has 26 career rushes. Not a stud WR, but can be part of a good WR corps. Speculation is that his former OC, Hue Jackson, will spend big to bring him to Cleveland. As much as I like him, Sanu isn’t worth big money.

Rishard Matthews – Dolphins – I loved Matthews coming out of college so it is good to see him start to take off as an NFL player. He is coming off a career year, 43-662-4. Similar to Sanu in that he’s not a guy you feed the ball to, but can be part of a good group. Price should be right and he is an ascending player.

Jermaine Kearse – Seahawks – Solid size at 6-1, 209. Does an amazing job on contested catches. Contact from DBs doesn’t seem to bother him. Focuses on the ball and makes some highlight grabs. There is risk with Kearse. Played in highly erratic passing game in Seattle. Put him on another team and you might find out Kearse can catch 80 passes and score 10 TDs. Or you might find out he benefited greatly from Russell Wilson scrambling around and buying time for him to get open. Kearse wants more catches and more money. Part of me is intrigued, but another part is scared of him. Call that the Byron Maxwell factor.

Nate Washington – Texans – Hard to believe Washington has been in the league for more than a decade. Has started 100 of the past 112 games. Has 458 career catches. The reason I’m listing him here is that the Eagles could use a smart, productive veteran to help mentor the young receivers.

STers (the Brad Smith / Seyi Ajirotutu role)

Andre Holmes – Raiders – Started for one year, but has mostly been a role player on offense and STer. Holmes has good size at 6-5, 208. Might be interesting to have someone that big as a RZ option.

Ricardo Lockette – Seahawks – Mostly a STer. Has 22 career catches, but made his living doing the dirty work on STs.

*****

DT

The Eagles starters are set, but with Cedric Thornton set to hit the market, depth could be an issue. It all depends on what Schwartz thinks of the current backups. He wants to rotate the DL so he does need good backups and not just guys who can eat up a few snaps here and there.

Nick Fairley – Rams – Schwartz drafted him in Detroit and Fairley posted solid numbers in 2012 and 2013. Was a backup last year in STL. If he’s willing to remain a backup, would make sense for him to reunite with Schwartz.

Sammie Lee Hill – Titans – Big man at 6-4, 329. Schwartz might want a big body to come off the bench and be able to stuff the run and help collapse the pocket. Hill played for him in Detroit.

Randy Starks – Dolphins – Will turn 33 in December, but remains an effective interior rusher. Could be good coming off the bench and as a situational player. Began his career playing under Schwartz in Tennessee.

Billy Winn – Colts – Has mostly played in the 3-4 in the NFL, but an interesting young guy. Goes 6-4, 300. Could play DE or DT in the 4-3. Doesn’t have the burst to start outside, but can play in space and Schwartz sometimes likes big guys on the edge. Got hurt late in the season so that’s an issue, but Winn would be a cheap investment. Has potential as a rotational guy.

*****

DE

The Eagles have 3 good DEs. Marcus Smith is completely unproven. The team will need to add someone, whether via FA or the draft. There are some good options, but they may be too good. Eagles are looking for a #4 DE. The draft might end up being the best option.

Jason Jones – Lions – Played for Schwartz in TEN and DET. Has good size at 6-5, 275. Also versatile. Can play DE or DT. Had 4.5 sacks last year. Turns 30 this spring. Has spent time as a starter and backup in his career. Really would make a lot of sense for the Eagles to target him.

Eugene Sims – Rams – 30-year old backup with limited production. But he has good length at 6-5 and the price will be right. Played in a similar system for the Rams so there wouldn’t be a huge learning curve.

George Selvie – Giants – Terrific motor. Has good size at 6-4, 270. Would be solid backup, but isn’t a good starter. Played for the Boys and G-men so he needs to play for the Eagles if he’s going to cover the whole NFC East.

*****

LB

The Eagles are set with starters. But they need backups. Najee Goode is one. I project him as the backup WIL. Here are some options the team could look at.

Vincent Rey – Bengals – Has been a starter and backup in his career. Can play inside or outside. Might look for a starting job, but he is best suited to being a key backup.

Tahir Whitehead – Lions – Former Temple star started in 2014 and 2015 and showed good talent. Would make sense for the Eagles to pursue him because Schwartz drafted him and he’ll know the system. The problem is that Whitehead would have to be convinced he could win an OLB spot. He’s not signing somewhere strictly to be a backup.

Danny Lansanah – Bucs – RFA, but the Bucs decided not to tender him. Productive backup OLB for them who could fill that role for the Eagles.

Justin Durant – Falcons – Older player who has started for most of his career. Played for Schwartz in DET so he would know the system. Could backup at OLB and MLB.

David Hawthorne – Saints – Veteran LB who has played inside and outside. Was a playmaker earlier in his career. Didn’t fare as well in the 3-4, but is a good fit in the 4-3.

Travis Lewis – Lions – Young player who has had a disappointing career. Schwartz drafted him, but Lewis didn’t play much while he was there. Had 4 starts in 2015, but is a complete unknown at this point.

Sean Spence – Steelers – I loved him coming out of Miami. Terrific college LB. Didn’t think he was a good fit for the Steelers 3-4 and injuries have hurt him as well. Solid backup the past 2 years. Started 13 games in that stretch. Not sure a team will take a chance on him as a starter, but could be a very good role player. Might fit at WIL and MLB.

*****

MISC

I don’t anticipate the Eagles making a move at RB. I think they’d have to do something with Murray first.

QB is a possibility. Chase Daniel would love a chance to compete for a starting job. If he can’t find a team to offer him that, you wonder if Doug Pederson would cut Sanchez and sign Daniel. I would be in favor of that move. I know Sanchez has more experience, but he played so poorly this past year and showed no progress that I’m willing to move on from him. The coaches have said nothing but good things about Sanchez publicly. Maybe they really like  him and think he’ll do better in the new system. We’ll see.

*****

SUMMARY

It feels like the Eagles are going to be more active than I originally thought, but I think a lot of the signings will be backups and role players rather than big names or stars. If you sign the right guys, they can really help your team.

I expect:

  • starting OG
  • veteran WR
  • backup DL
  • backup LB

The Eagles will talk to some Safeties, but that feels a lot less certain.

The key for me is for the Eagles to be smart shoppers. Sign the right guys, not the biggest names. Find players who fit the schemes and can help right away.

This WR group is so thin and lacking so much quality i would just give it a pass entirely since people will get hugely over paid. Find a burning WR who can run go routes in the 4th/5th and play him 10-15 snaps a game to give us a deep threat at times, and free up the run game a little and get 5-8 x-plays over the year and hope the guys we already have improve and build chemistry with Sam in a full off season working together.

Good article, although I can’t get past one thing. If we cut Bradford before 2017, its just 9 million in dead money for 2017, no big deal.

Um, what the fuck did I just read, 9 million and acting like its chunk change. That 9 million in dead money would be more than our 3rd highest cap number in 2017, although it might drop all the way down to 4th when Cox gets his deal.

I might be blinded by my firm point that Bradford is horrible mediocre and thus this contract is going to massively overpay him, but fuck me. Oh really we save 2 million of a tool that utilizes the top 5 contracts of the best paid position in football. Well skippy, we save a little compared to the best QBs in the league, but we still have it to Sam Bradford.

Next on Eagles news, heres why paying Kiko Alonso like Bobby Wagner is a good idea, because fuck it, at least it wasn’t a Kuechly level contract.

  15. 15 John Galt said at 11:56 AM on March 7th, 2016:

The reason it’s no big deal is because theoretically the reason we cut him is we have a guy we just drafted this year on a small rookie contract. That 2M + the 9M in dead money is still just 11M at the QB position which would be one of the smaller QB cap numbers in the league. But I get that 9M in dead money is still a big number

  16. 16 Patrick said at 11:58 AM on March 7th, 2016:

Sure, but I’d still rather have that young QB +9 million in extra cap space.

  17. 17 ICDogg said at 1:54 PM on March 7th, 2016:

It’s only 9m if no one else signs him. There’s offset so assuming he gets paid at least 4m elsewhere it’s a 5m cap hit

  18. 18 MattE said at 3:06 PM on March 7th, 2016:

just gotta keep in mind all of these numbers need to be kept in context of percentages of salary cap and not just an arbitrary number (which people seem to lose their minds about). Brady is unique situation because he has the ultimate QB-Job security with Belichick, so that restructuring can happen again and again because he is going to retire a Patriot most likely. The guy is just saying that from a pure percentage we could do worse, but we ABSOLUTELY will be paying at least 8%+ of our cap to even sniff the division. The fact that Bradfords contract is 2 years and 2/3 of the guaranteed money is the first year tells me, we are going to draft a QB hopefully and he can sit the first year while Bradford trys to pull a Revis and parlay his play into another short term fully guaranteed contract. Like it said his agent is fully aware of his past earnings and is not looking for security for Bradford’s contract, instead trying to maximize is guaranteed earnings. The only way this doesn’t work is if Sanchez is somehow a 3rd string QB in 2017, at which time if Bradford did well enough would be great trade bait in 2017 with an appealing low cap number for 2017.

Intrigued by Fairly. Like some of the Safeties. One of the guards would be great, that FA group is deep.

The rest of them I really don’t have interest in. If they signed a WR, maybe Kearse. Not really into that group at all.

Howie isn’t one to get housed on a deal like this. Can’t see someone spending much though. For all his flaws he is better than we have had in some time. His replacement isn’t likely on the team.

Unless the genius son of a gun wants WTII as a CB and needs to move on from Max to make that work.

  28. 28 BobSmith77 said at 12:10 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I’d be fine with that especially given what Schwartz likes in CB including their ability to have some speed.

Maxwell is overpaid and I can’t see him performing that much that much better this year. Yeah he rebounded a bit after arguably being the worst starting CB in the NFL in Sept.

Still isn’t anything more than a mediocre CB who lacks speed and acceleration along with playing really soft at times last year. Really surprised Maxwell didn’t take a lot more crap in the 2nd half of the season (especially the Lions’ game) where he gave very questionable effort to tackle players at times.

If the Eagles can get a conditional 4th round pick for Maxwell and get out from his crappy contract, I’d take it.

  29. 29 Tumtum said at 12:40 AM on March 8th, 2016:

  30. 30 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:17 PM on March 7th, 2016:

If we trade Maxwell. It won’t be because of the compensation we get in return. The compensations would be allowing us to get out of the bad contract sooner than we could by cutting him..

What we would get in return Probably won’t be significant

  31. 31 BobSmith77 said at 12:19 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Yeah. If the Dolphins take on the entire salary, I’d imagine you simply get a late round pick.

  32. 32 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:23 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Im sure we would take the 7th round pick and run if we had the chance… It may not even get us that much. We could end up doing something like Maxwell and our 7th for the Dolphins 6th round pick but obviously it would be a cap motivated move, not something we are doing to get value in return

  33. 33 RC5000 said at 12:06 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Save 4.9 million… Jenkins & Amukamara are FAs…I realize they’d be expensive . CB is pretty good in 1st in draft.

  34. 34 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:16 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Sean smith since we tend to stick with the lazy KC connections

  35. 35 RC5000 said at 11:58 AM on March 7th, 2016:

You say they need a starting safety yes I agree but then why does it feel less certain they will sign one? You didn’t explain that at all. It’s weird to me you expect a starting guard but not a starting safety. What am I missing? It can’t just be Jeff Allen connection. Abdullah and Branch are FAs. There are a lot of FA safeties young and older (cheaper).

Also did I miss cornerbacks? We have Rowe, Maxwell, Watkins, and the 3 rookies who wre on IR or PS. We have unproven nickel yet you previewed DE saying Marcus Smith was unproven as 4th DE. I’m not saying they’ll sign a CB but between Biggers and Boykin and Carroll I hope they consider it. It’s more important than 4th/5th DE and 4th DT and 5TH LB isn’t it?

Kind of surprised CB isn’t a consideration Tommy.

  36. 36 BobSmith77 said at 12:13 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Yeah they need to sign another veteran CB and I think they will. Just depends if it is Carroll or if they have someone else in mind.

  37. 37 Tdoteaglefan said at 12:22 PM on March 7th, 2016:

maybe re-signing Carrol and targeting CB in the first round..Hargraeves, Mckensie Alexander, William Jackson III could be possible targets at our spot or slightly lower in a trade back scenario

  38. 38 BobSmith77 said at 12:26 PM on March 7th, 2016:

My sense is that Roseman thinks the Eagles got poor value for Maxwell’s contract last year and it is not likely to improve much this year. Ditto his attitude and effort at times last year.

The rest of what you said makes a lot of sense too especially keeping Rowe at one of the other CB positions.

  39. 39 BobSmith77 said at 12:18 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Still love to see Williams here at the one DE position even if that is a largely a pipe dream.

If the Eagles do trade Maxwell and move another meaningful salary (say Barwin ), it really does free up some money to do something of substance this offseason.

  40. 40 RC5000 said at 12:27 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Jason already wrote article on Maxwell trade cap implications. I don’t know if we’ll pull it off or take something bad back.

In a trade the Eagles only take on $4.8 million in dead money, a gain of $4.9 million in cap room. Pulling that move off should earn Howie Roseman an executive of the offseason award if such an award existed.

Im conflicted… On one hand the elliot Shorr parks fanboy in me would love more cap space… On the other hand I kind of like having limited cap space for a change, knowing that we can only add 2 or 3 Free Agents forcing Roseman to build the draft, instead of clearing a bunch of cap space and seeing Roseman not be able to help himself from going on a big free agent shopping spree….

When Maxwell was Bad, he was REALLY BAD! But it wasn’t all BAD, he played some solid ball during parts of the season, the problem was we paid so much for him, and his Lows were so Putrid, that when he did play well, no one really cared or gave him much credit for it.
    ..
Dysfunctional teams get rid of a starter without already having his replacement on the roster. We have enough holes that need to be addressed without creating another glaring starting need especially at a positipn like CB that is typically hard for rookies to play…. the CB depth chart DOESNT look good, I feel like there are like two or three CB roster spots that should be upgraded before we go create another CB need and get out of the Maxwell deal at this point in time,. It’s not like we are stuck with the Guy for 6 years, we can cut Him a year from now, so part of me would like to see him one more year before making a decision on him. His presence also allows us to groom a rookie and not have to put him on the field too soon… He has NO TRADE VALUE, it would only be a cap dump trade. We have a lot of work to do on our secondary without also having to replace Maxwell
    ..
Im pretty conflicted about this, I can see value in trading him now, and I can see value in cutting him a year from now, so I’ll probably be fine with whatever they decide, but I’d probably prefer seeing a guy in his second year before making the permanent decision to get rid of Him, so Ultimately I’ll probably be fine with whatever they decide to do about this

  52. 52 BobSmith77 said at 12:41 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I’d like Boone on a shorter deal and someone that can be penciled in right away to start at LG.

This still strikes me more as a ‘rebuilding team’ than a ‘transition team’ and it would fit with what Roseman has done this offseason including extending a few veterans to shorter term deals as the Eagles try to be competitive yet get younger as they retool.

  53. 53 TypicalDouche said at 12:50 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I don’t agree that the moves Roseman has made indicates that this team is rebuilding. Why keep a 34 year old Peters, why resign a 27 year old pass rusher, why keep Barwin, why extend a 29 year old Jenkins. I firmly believe this team thinks it can be competitive immediately and are making moves that show that. What ever moves they make in free agency will give us a much better idea. If they sign some high end players then like Jeff Allen to play LG or a safety like Iloka then rebuilding goes out of the windown. FA will give us the clearest outlook this team has.

  54. 54 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:51 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Celek too…. But yes, I assume we are in win the division or bust mode already

  55. 55 TypicalDouche said at 12:53 PM on March 7th, 2016:

You’re right Celek and even Bradford. I know the Bradford deal can essentially be a one year deal but if this was a rebuild why not sign some bum to be a stop gap or roll with Sanchez instead of signing Bradford. In a weak division this team can be competitive quickly.

  56. 56 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:35 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Im also not sure all our players would be willing to sign those extensions before the open market most likely would have increased their value if the Eagles were going to with some rebuild. Rebuilding really never made much sense when we have as much Talent on our roster as any of our Rivals, it would be a damn shame to waste a great opportunity that is playing in such a winnable division that is currently ripe for the taking.
    ..
Rebuilding ismt even Neccessary in today’s NFl. You can compete While you build. It’s going to be more and more rare to see those 3-5 yeàr rebuilds like we are seeing in Jaxonville, most coaches and GMs today DONT even get the job security to go that route.
    ..
The Texans are taking advantage of a poor division, and winning ISNT really stopping them from building their team. It’s not like the NBA where sneaking into the playoffs cripples your ability to really Improve your team..
    ..
For me, The most “rebuilding” I want to see from the Eagles, is competing with what we have, Eliminate the FA shopping sprees, make 2 or 3 strategic signings in FA and Build the rest tnru the draft… You wanna talk about Building with young players, making it to the playoffs and giving your kids a taste of playoff experience is GREAT FOR building your NFL team up..
    ..
Typically Teams have to experiemce Losing in the playoffs before learning how to win in the playoffs.. Since its a process, the sooner we can gain some playoff experience even if we lose the playoff games, the Sooner this tea will learn how to win in Jauary and grow into a legit contender
    .,
I would really hate to waste this opportunity that is playing in such a winnable division. I don’t see any rival that out classes us in Talent, heck as we stand today, we already have better personnel on defense than our division rivals….
    ..
Anything less than winning our division this year is a failure, even if we aren’t a legit Super Bowl contender

  57. 57 BobSmith77 said at 1:56 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Good news for us Illoka fans, I been worried about his former coach Zimmer, wanting to bring Illoka to the Vikings to play next to harrison, but the Vikings gave a big extension to a guy they had in house already.. Be great if the Vikings are out of the Illoka bidding war. Unfortunately im sure there are at least 5 other teams we have to compete with for his services, and odds are one of our division Rivals are also targeting him, if not all our division rivals
    ..
Sanu won’t be an eagle because it won’t make sense to pay what he willl end up getting. rumor has it that the Giants and Browns will make a strong push for him
    ..
I don’t see how we can consider paying a FA DT lke Fairley.. Makes no sense to me, when we will be extending Cox and Logan in the next two years
    ..
Anyone know if the big KC corners Sean Smith is still playing at a high level?

  61. 61 TypicalDouche said at 12:51 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Sean Smith is a baller and still one of the better corners in the league. Got overshadowed slightly by rookie sensation Marcus Peters but Smith’s play was on par if not better then Peters.

  62. 62 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:00 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Thank you sir.. Wasn’t sure if his ability started to diminish yet.
    ..
If they are going to trade Maxwell instead of holding on to him for one more year, they better think they can replace him with an immediate free agent upgrade. for me Janoris jenkins would be ideal, but they better be able to sign a CB of that Caliber if they trade Maxwell
    ..
Keeping Maxwell, and cut him next year would allow us to draft and groom his replacement for a year before we have to depend on him.. But im ok with whatever they decide to do about Maxwell. I can make a case for keeping or trading him

  63. 63 TypicalDouche said at 1:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Yea the Maxwell trade rumors don’t make sense to me for a couple of reasons. 1 – There is no replacement on the roster other then Rowe (do they have that much confident in the 2nd year player?), or do they trust bringing back Carroll to start with Rowe. 2 – His contract is easily to get out of after next year so he is worth keeping for at the least one more year. 3 – The Dolphins can’t sign any of their own players yet they are going to give up assets to bring in a big money player? 4 – Compensation. I would rather throw Maxwell out there again for another season then give him away for peanuts just to save some money. With all that said Sean Smith would be more then welcomed here.

  64. 64 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:10 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Well said, I see it the same way as you do..
    ..
CB is already a big enough Need with Maxwell on the roster. Even if we are able to have Nolan, Maxwell and ROWE at CB this Year, drafting a QB is still a pretty big need for us, things get Really scary if we lose Maxwell or Nolan, God forbid we lose Both right now…

  65. 65 Gary Barnes said at 12:53 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Good stuff, Tommy. Thanks as always for the detail.

I think CB should be another area of target for the Eagles especially if the rumors are serious about Maxwell being dealt. We have a lot of ? at the position and no one that is elite or even great.

For me, the priority order would be OG, OT, CB, S and LB

  66. 66 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:03 PM on March 7th, 2016:

    I see it as:
    1)’Safety
    2) OG
    3) OT
    4) Strong side LB (ideal if he also has MIKE LB versatility)
    5) CB
    6) DT
    7) WR
    8) RB
    .,
But if we trade Maxwell, CB instantly becomes as big of a need as both safety and Guard
    .,.
Plenty of work to do, hopefully they can get it right and build it to where it needs to be with two Offseasons… But this year is Division Title or Bust already as far as I’m concerned

  67. 67 Nick C said at 1:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Just saw we are still in contract talks with Carroll. My guess is they have something lined up with Carroll for what we would save on Maxwell.

  68. 68 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:16 PM on March 7th, 2016:

My understanding is Nolan wasn’t going to sign anyghing without testing the open market, after he looked around and saw The contracts, guys in a similar situation as him like Davon House got in FA..
    ,,
I also don’t think the Maxwell situatiion has any bearing on what we do about Nolan, and that we would like to Keep Nolan whether Maxwell is here or not.. Trade or no trade for Maxwell, my impression is Eagles and Nolan would like Him to remain an Eagle, but the money has to be right for both sides, if Nolan gets blown away with some crazy contract offer, the Eagles probably łet him walk. If his minimal starting Experiemce on the outside, along with coming off ankle surgery means that team are only offering him modest prove it deals, Eagles will bring him back, even if they don’t trade Maxwell
    .
Even if Maxwell, nolan and ROWE are all here this season. Drafting a CB is still a big priority for us

Wishful thinking? Maybe… Can’t rule it out when we are talking about the mad scientist chip who blew up the basement at Novacare..
    .
    2) DONT the Niners have a quality Fullback that chip will piss away one way or another?
    .
    3) who is the Niners kicker and is he better than Sturgis?
    .
    4) trade Taylor Hart for ANYTHING!
    ..
    5) WOULDNT be opposed to trading for Old man safety Antione Bathea if we want to use him as a bridge safety to play until we can hit on a safety in the draft if we strike out with Safeties we target in free Agency
    .,
    6) OT Anthony Davis is coming out of retirment, Id love to trade for him and see what he has left
    .
    7) Niners need a WR, and Huff certainly isn’t untouchable depending what they are willing to give up..
    ..
    8) If it’s true that Chip DIDNT like Carlos Hyde, I would be down to trade him Ryan Mathews, especially if ZEKE is available at #13
    ..
    9) DONT the Nines have a ton of Draft picks? I don’t want to trade Barwin, and I don’t expect to trade Barwin, but if Chip is willing to blow us away with a 2nd rounder or something crazy, Id be interested.. But The ONLY way I’d be ok with Trading Barwin is if a team blows us away and makes us an offer we can’t refuse

    ..
I didn’t think we would Fire chip, and To this day I think that he does have the knowledge to become a good pro coach, but im glad I don’t have to hold my breath all offseason hoping that he finally puts his ego to the side and makes some drastic changes to his core philosophies, It’s a relief that I don’t have to sit and worry all offseason about if Chip is finally going to evolve, or his ego will force him to just double down on his fuck ups and do more damage to this franchise..

  133. 133 Nick C said at 2:54 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Wasn’t referring to his cap value:) I would love to dump him, Murray, etc. But just wondering why eagles execs would want to drive down what little trade value he has. if you can get a 4/5th instead of a 7th, give it a shot.

  134. 134 The original AG said at 3:01 PM on March 7th, 2016:

IMO, I think this is long-term cap flexibility. $4.5 back this year and completely rid of his contract. There’s a lot of ifs, but if Rowe turns out to be a stud (I think he can), move that other contract. If you feel comfortable with the others, use that $4.5 either on a G, T, or S and get a starter – or just roll it over to the following year. Most likely, Fletch will just pocket it in his contract.

I appreciate Roseman ISNT just spitefully purging the roster of all chips guys, seems like he is being fair about trying to undo mistakes that were made.. Does this shed light on how they think about Bradford or about how they feel about this year’s draft class at QB?

If he’s purging everything Chip, they had that shot with Bradford, but kept him. Just a thought that they are going to give him a lot of rope to see if he hangs himself or meets the potential.

  226. 226 Fufina said at 3:34 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Think the retaining of Bradford has to do with the fact that both Howie and Doug feel they need to get a positive product on the field year 1. The draft does not look like it will allow them to get Goff/Wentz and Lynch is probably easier to get now (less likely someone trades in front) and he really benefits from a year even if you draft him there.

  227. 227 Iskar36 said at 3:33 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Not that Kiko didn’t have plenty of questions of his own, but is anyone else worried that we haven’t seen enough from Hicks yet to just assume he will be a stud. Don’t get me wrong, he was fantastic in the games he played, but we have had many examples of guys who played well, got fans excited early, and then disappeared quickly after that. Hicks was probably playing on a other level relatively speakong, so maybe the concern is much lower, but to me, it still exists. And given the injury history, maybe something the team has to/is considering.

  228. 228 Nick C said at 3:35 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I haven’t seen enough from Rowe either to tell me he is even a solid starter yet. He has a few decent games, sure. But I think everyone is a bit too early to annoint him. I need to see the compensation on this deal. We currently have huge holes at G and S, and we just created two more gaping holes at CB and OLB. Sure, Maxwell is over-priced and upgradeable but we just gave away two starters for possibly a small return or draft pick swap. We shall see.

  229. 229 Iskar36 said at 3:38 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Yea. The compensation is going to be critcal, but the fact it hasn’t been reported yet concerns me. How often have deals with significant draft compensation been left unreported when the players involved are known?

true. But the LB core as a unit now is lacking guys. Your point is well taken, but I just would have felt a little more comfortable with some added veteran leadership in that unit to help Hicks.

  233. 233 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:49 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Personally I wanted to see what Kiko body looked like another year removed from his surgery, figuring he was cheap enough to keep and really finds out who he is before we traded him…. But Kiko was such a question mark that either way we had to invest in a serious backüp plan at Strong side LB.. If we have to make an investment in that LB spot because we don’t trust him, I won’t kill them for trading Kiko for some value… But I feel you.. Even with Kiko we Needed two credible backups because of Kiko and Hicks durability concerns, Goode is a solid backup for Kendricks.
    .
Trading Kiko and maybe Maxwell are the first Roseman moves I don’t love, but mostly due to the uncertainty of who will replace them… Adequately replace them and I’ll be fine with it, even if I probably would have held on to Kiko for one more year before quitting on him

  234. 234 bsuperfi said at 4:03 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I’d have liked to have hung on to Kiko too, especially given his salary, but he might’ve been a key part of the deal. I’m not sure about this rumor of moving up in the 1st, but I do hope we’re going back to collecting draft picks. That’s how you build a team for real.

If we can sign Carrol or Thurmond to replace Maxwell, all well and good. A part of me wants to sign Boykin and finally give him a shot on the outside, but that’s probably just sentimentality. But if we can pick up one decent established corner who won’t rock the boat and draft an LB on day 1, I think we should be just fine.

It’s not like Baalke can get Rid of a bunch of 3-4 defenders he drafted and excuse it by a transition to a 4-3…

    From the Dolphins Message Board…….ROTFLMAO!

I would love to see how the negotiations went down for this trade:

Roseman – It looks like you guys need a corner.

Tannenbaum – Corner, you say. Sir, I am looking for a flashy name. Ideally, he would happen to play corner.

Roseman – Well, Michael, you are in luck because we signed a huge name last year in Byron Maxwell. It was a flashy move. Now, sadly, he didn’t pan out very well at all. I imagine you have never gone down the road of a big name free agent not panning out, but sadly it does happen.

Tannenbaum – I have no idea what you are talking about. Big name free agents always work. Just look at the Packers and how they build through free agency. I am stuck with these stupid draft picks. The draft is long and boring. I just need flash.

Roseman – Mike, I like you. I’ll tell you what. I will take some of those draft picks, and I will give you Maxwell and his shiny contract full of commas.

Tannenbaum – I could not imagine this day getting any better.

Roseman – Michael, this may be your lucky day. I see you also are in need of linebackers.

Tannenbaum – Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that last season.

Roseman – Can you think of a name more hot than Kiko Alonso three years ago?

Tannenbaum – Not at all. What ever happened to him?

Roseman – Oh you know, he had a couple of minor ACL tears – nothing serious. I don’t want to brag, but he had 30 whole tackles last year. You know, if you give me some more of those draft picks/lottery tickets, I will throw him in too.

Tannenbaum – Pshhhhyeah. This is a no brainer.

Ross – You’re not lighting my money on fire again, Mike?

Tannenbaum – Oh Stephen, is such a jokester.

Roseman – I hear you might be losing your running back too. If Llamar leaves, come back on Wednesday. I have a running back with a big ole flashy contract that you will love.

Seeing what Alonso to see what he could do after a 1 year in recovery from his ACL was worth keeping him for the remainder of his rookie contract. Maxwell may not be the shut down CB he’s paid to be but he’s still decent. This gives the Eagles $5 million in dead cap and there really aren’t many good CBs on the market.

So the Eagles are trying to very actively trade Maxwell, Murray, and Alonso? I can’t disagree that trading any of these 3 isn’t a bad move in isolation but I also wonder how much of this is motivated by Roseman trying to wipe away what Kelly did too.

I give’ll Roseman plenty of time (2 if not even 3 years) to see if he can make things work here but he strikes me as a vengeful, spiteful, and petty guy to work with and for him.

When he has spoken with the media since Kelly was fired, he can’t help but take repeated digs at Kelly each time. I do wonder how that is going to effect front office personnel and scouts willingness to come work for this team.

  420. 420 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:32 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I dunno about the #8 pick.. We can’t rule out the first round swap because the Dolphins are one of the dumber franchises capable of something stupid like that… But Im thinking we try to get a 2nd round pick, for our 3rd or 5th round pick since I think we have two of each… I would consider that a Great Win of a deal for Howie in terms of value, even if I would have rather held on to Kiko for a year… But it could be less..
    ..
Miami doesnt have many picks so I would think it will only be a pick for pick swap, not us adding extra picks, which is what the original Shefter report said..
    ..
The cap dump is part of our compensation, but not as much as people think, because last year was the expensive part and allegedly they are going to restructure his deal anyway..so while dumping the contract is part of the compensation, and we didn’t NEED them to take Kiko’s cheap contract, I still think we end up coming away with some decent compensation… HOWIE does get the Value right typically. He doesn’t just dump guys just to dump them..

  421. 421 Jernst said at 8:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

  439. 439 Greg Richards said at 5:30 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Honestly, I think this is fantasy land we’re talking about. I don’t see the actual deal being so favorable for the Eagles. At 8, you figure that Tunsil, at least 1 of the QBs and Ramsey will definitely be off the board. So you’re looking at Stanley, Jack, Bosa, the other QB, and then probably Lawson and the CBs. Stanley would be the most likely target IMO and getting ahead of TB, the Giants, and Chicago would be useful.

Depends on what Miami thinks of Alonso. We’re all assuming he’s worth nothing in the trade. You’re right. That’s probably part of it . . .

    But it’s human nature.

    Great point.

  493. 493 Dave said at 6:44 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I didn’t follow the trial closely and I’m not sure if the jury was informed that the defense attorney and his lunch crew watched the video and judged her body after her emotional testimony. Regardless, those actions by the defense attorney seem to be the basis of her emotional distress magnified 1000. A sad case nonetheless.

  494. 494 ACViking said at 6:23 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Nothing is worse than rape. (Not even death, because there’s not continuing emotion trauma.)

And I’m not arguing the “gut” value for a rape victim versus an Erin Andrews’ invasion of privacy victim.

Lawyers for rape victims ask to 10s of millions of dollars in damages . . . because NO amount will ever compensate them.

Andrews’ lawyers asked for 10s of millions of dollars.

The jury sorted through the facts, applied the legal instructions, and came up with a number.

    That’s how trials work.

  497. 497 ACViking said at 7:32 PM on March 7th, 2016:

There’s “privacy vs. the government”. That’s the kind governed by the Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments.

Then there’s “privacy vs. non-government persons” — the relationship between each other.

Our constitutional privacy has been evaporating at an increasing rate since Nixon became president and replaced 4 Supreme Court justices.

Privacy — which the 4th Amendment’s search warrant provisions is supposed to protect — has been the greatest victim in the government’s “War on Crime.” After 9-11, Congress accelerated the problem with the PATRIOT Act.

To your drones reference — technology’s the devil.

Don’t know if you remember the polls taken after 9/11, which asked people if they cared whether government collected their emails and phone calls.

A healthy majority of Americans answered, “if you haven’t done anything wrong, you have nothing to hide.”

With that kind of thinking, I’m not terribly optimistic about our privacy . . . or a lot of other principles that America’s suppose to represent.

  620. 620 Jernst said at 7:23 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Very true. When it comes to trades and getting value he’s always been a stud. And, as far as drafting, it remains to be seen since the FO has been so muddled that no one can say for sure who was responsible for the bad picks. The only thing we know for sure is that Howie ran the 2012 draft, which was excellent. Before that it was Reid who was exerting a bunch of influence over the picks and after that it was Chip.

  639. 639 Jernst said at 8:29 PM on March 7th, 2016:

If they couldn’t get value for Jackson we should have just kept him. Jackson was set to make $6.25M in 2014 and had a cap hit of about $8M. We ended up giving Riley Cooper $5M that year. No one can convince me that for all of Jacksons limitations and off/on field antics that he wasn’t worth $3M over what we ended up paying Cooper. Even when Jackson signed in Washington. His cap hit the past two years was only $8M both years. He was worth every penny of that, he just needed a stud possession WR on the other side of him. If he got to play with Maclin in Chips offense those first two years, all the issues that arose when he was the #1 guy like disappearing in the redzone and not being consistent would have faded away.

Think about the phone conversations Roseman and Banner had starting in January, through FA, the draft, and then the collapse.

    Maybe it wasn’t Banner.

But Roseman has a confidant in the NFL.

Would love to hear those exchanges . . .

Not to mention seeing the secret emails from Roseman to Lurie after every Kelly move saying, “nope — bad one — here’s why.”

  649. 649 Telmert said at 8:29 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I wonder how much of that type of feedback Lurie heard directly from outside people he spoke to during the course of the year. Even just implied comments like “wow, that Murray contract is really out of character for your team”.

I also wonder how many trade calls they’re getting right now (and have been getting) from teams that think we have some hidden gems that Chip never used properly – i.e. the Eagles don’t know what they have in this guy.

  650. 650 Jernst said at 10:08 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Both great points. I’m sure Lurie had a lot of people speaking up to him about the unorthodox things Chip was doing and warning him that this could all blow up real fast.
And, Chip badly missused a bunch of players. But, in all fairness, Murray really did look washed up all of last year. Dude was painfully slow and didn’t seem to have any of that nasty punishing style that he had become known for. Maxwell looked and played like a guy who was a mid round pick who had started 17 games in his career and was a decent #2, just like most people thought he was. Kiko, aside from his spectacular interception in week one, looked like he had no confidence in his knee and couldn’t take on OR shed a block to save his life, and compounded that by looking completely lost. So, I’ll be very surprised if any of these guys ends up being a real tough loss for the Eagles in the future.
Maybe Kiko recovers fully and turns it around…but, he looks more and more like Stewart Bradley 2.0, a guy who tore up his knee and was never the same again. Murray is shot and at 29 years old should be expected to be nearing the end of his career anyways. And, Maxwell is a decent corner who unfortunately is just not fast or athletic enough to ever be elite.

The most shocking thing to me was the regression he showed in scheme creativity and variability. His scheme went from being revolutionary to atrocious over night. And, it was not the rest of the league catching up to him. He literally changed his entire approach and widdled the playbook down to 4 bland plays. Completely different from the offense we saw in year one that looked like it was going to take the world by storm.

And, if Howie is as Machievellian as people seem to suggest I’m sure he was documenting and planting the seeds of doubt and dissent in Lurie’s hear the whole way…and really rightfully so. Looking back on Chip’s last year I’m still surprised at myself for all the (albeit eventual) blind faith I had in him. I talked myself into a lot of his moves over the year thinking he was just a step ahead of us all and boy was I wrong.

The sad thing about these trades is that thanks to Chip we essentially got rid of the franchises best RB ever while he was still in his prime for nothing. The only thing we got back in that trade had to be thrown into a subsequent trade a year later just to get another team to take on the contract of Kelly’s biggest FA signing of his tenure. What a disaster.

In three years Chip released DeSean and McCoy in their primes for nothing and let Maclin leave in free agency and signed Maxwell and Murray to horrendous contracts. If he stayed here another year we’d almost assuredly have let Vinny Curry go as well. I’m not going to miss Chip’s strategy of systematically ridding the team of all it’s best playmakers.

  675. 675 Telmert said at 8:23 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Consensus is that OL is the Eagles biggest need, but I’m wondering if we’re going to be surprised by them doing less than we’d expect. If “NFL” scheme and snap count fixes Kelce and results in general improvement, they wouldn’t be too far off. Love to see just one of those developmental guys step up this year.

  676. 676 Dude said at 8:36 PM on March 7th, 2016:

  679. 679 Jernst said at 9:14 PM on March 7th, 2016:

The atrocious guard play certainly wasn’t a mirage. We were very much so overmatched talent-wise on the inside. But, Chip’s scheme just amplified the problem rather than covering it up. He’d often have blocking schemes where a DT would line up between the Center and the Right Guard, he’d then have both the Center and the RG pull to the right and ask the LG to come all the way across and block the DT. I can’t tell you how many times I watched Barbre or Tobin wiff on such a block because it was literally impossible for them to cover that much ground against a DT that was shooting upfield. The RB would get tackled in the backfield and the next series we’d see the same play again and again. The next game…the same thing. He really put overmatched guards in an impossible situation.

  680. 680 Allen3000 said at 8:25 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I am far from a Negaphilian, but you guys are setting yourself up for disappointment with this Howie love fest. Okay, he’s dumping some undesirable players. But now, where are the impact players in return? Are we really going to pretend we haven’t seen this song and dance many times over during the Howie era? How many times did we go crazy over his genius free agent signings only to be let down by the end of the season?

Yes, I’m happy with the Demarco trade. Dumping Maxwell’s schedule might feel fine right now, but we still need to find a quality starting CB in his place. Howie doesn’t have the most stellar track record of drafting and developing highly talented DB’s. So yay I guess for now. But uh….none of these moves matter until we get some continuity and start winning when it really matters.

  684. 684 solid said at 8:42 PM on March 7th, 2016:

To be fair, all the eagles have done is accelerate moving on from pieces they wanted to get rid of next year anyway. Make no mistake, this is a rebuild. That said, a rebuild doesn’t have to start at square one. We have a lot of young talent. It’s about getting rid of the fat now. I suspect Jason Peters, Brent, and Sam are the veterans they decided to keep to usher in the “new” regime. DeMeco already had a viable replacement in Hicks. The OL is lacking in talent to show JP the door this year. Celek is just the man. And, Bradford, there just wasn’t anyone better to bridge into the next QB. My hope is for 2 or 3 solid signings, and then focus our resources in the draft. Rinse and repeat for next year.

  685. 685 Allen3000 said at 9:39 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Agreed totally. That’s exactly the scenario I’m hoping for too. I guess maybe I’m a bit surprised at how excited people are over the moves. To me, it just shows how incompetent the front office (don’t care how much power Chip had, Lurie/Roseman were signing those checks too)/Chip has been over the past year or so.

These moves free up cap space which *should* allow for the acquisition of much needed talent at certain positions. At the end of the day though, these moves still don’t get us closer to where we need to be. They free up $, but we need to hit on our fa signings and the draft.

Re: The Runyan Plan – Part II . . . Pretty Much

Maybe, despite price, Osemele is the Eagles’s #1 target. By a lot.

Pederson’s on record echoing Reid’s mantra of: “Give me a QB and 2 OTs, and I’ll figure out the rest on offense.” (words to that effect)

Right now, the Eagles have LJ and JP.

But let’s say the Eagles sign Osemele — he gets plugged in at OG in 2016.

    In 2017, Peters leaves (retire/cut/trade).

LJ goes to OLT. And Osemele swings outside to ORT.

Now the OT position is covered for the next 5-6 years.

For enough cash and guarantees, Osemele would agree to a favorable contract structure that pushes the bigger cap hits into 2017 and beyond — when Peters’s own big numbers are off the books . . . in effect creating space for Osemele’s.

Getting Osemele — with the intent of splitting from Peters after 1 year — allows the Eagles to focus on drafting OGs in 2016, which are cheaper in draft terms than OTs.

That creates a lot more flexibility on draft day for the Birds.

Yes, the Eagles need another safety. But does he have to be at a premium price?

And which offers better value to Pederson’s vision? An OT or a S?

    Just kicking it out there.

  696. 696 The original AG said at 9:01 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Why not move JP inside and let LJ and Osemele just start bookending now? I love JP as much as the next guy, but from what we’ve seen – he can’t be counted on to make 16 & play at a high level the whole time.

From a football standpoint, it would seem to be better to put him inside so there’s less movement on the line when he’s out. Osemele would go from G to T, back to G, then to T – all because JP’s body can’t do it anymore.

  697. 697 solid said at 9:02 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Need to reach floor but date they have to reach floor isn’t until sometime until January or February of next year. By that time, Carr and Mack will be eligible for extensions. They’d be smart to save money for those guys.

  701. 701 solid said at 9:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I think they target Allen or Brooks at OL.

  702. 702 Jernst said at 9:06 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Excellent post! And, I hope this is what the FO is thinking. Obviously (regardless of Pederson’s vision/scheme) OT is far more important than safety. So that has to be priority #1.

I’d like to see us sign a safety that plays the run well. With Schwartz’s frequent use of the wide 9, that puts additional stress on the safeties as they become a part of the defenses run fits and are responsible for a gap on a run play.

Jenkins can play deep center field, he can play in the slot and cover well and he’s surprisingly good around the LOS in the run game for a guy who’s a converted CB, but the last thing we need is a overwhelmed safety next to him who can’t handle all the stress our new scheme puts on its safeties.

Safeties in this scheme really need to be multitalented or it can cause huge problems. We saw first hand how having safeties that were poor run defenders and not savy and experienced enough to play the pass AND the run simultaneously without getting burned by playaction passes back when Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen were playing behind the wide 9.

As we’ve seen over the past few years in Carolina, Kurt is a pretty decent safety when he’s allowed to sit back and play coverage without having run gap responsibility. The added responsibilities in the wide 9 really put a premium on football intelligence, experience, and ability to play both the run and the pass, and for some players it’s just too much. And, the results can be horrible as one misstep can easily lead to a huge play.

  703. 703 ACViking said at 9:10 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Do you think Jenkins’ flexibility allows the Eagles to go 2nd-tier at safety in FA?

Illoka sounds great. But do the Eagles really need him, as opposed to getting a couple players at other positions?

  704. 704 solid said at 9:17 PM on March 7th, 2016:

This is what I wondered initially as well. For a while, I thought the eagles were moving Rowe there, but with the Maxwell trade, they just don’t have enough viable personnel at CB. Even if they drafted a safety, they cannot throw him out there on day 1. Is McLeod 2nd tier?

  705. 705 Jernst said at 9:53 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Honestly I think in this scheme both safeties need to be above average for it to really function properly. The issue with safety is that one misstep can often lead to a huge game changing play as they are the last line of defense. A safety who’s head is swimming trying to deal with multiple responsibilities and is worried about his run fit who takes one step forward on a playaction pass can easily allow an 80 yard TD with that one misstep.

That being said, a savy defensive coordinator who has run this defense for years, will be able to compensate and hide such a player much better than Juan Castillo could. The problem with that is that the best way to hide such a player is to limit his responsibility and either make him a box safety or a deep centerfielder and let Jenkins handle the multiple responsibilities.

This presents two problems. One: it limits the benefit you get from having a multitalented player like Jenkins that can move around and be used to neutralize matchups if he ends up being relegated to center field (if the other safety is a box defender/extra LB) or if Jenkins ends up being the one who plays the box while taking him out of some of his coverage responsibilities where he also excels. Subsequently this also limits your coverage options and limits your overall scheme variability as your constantly restrained by covering up for the sub par safety.

Two: even if you split the rolls into a more stringent SS/FS dichotomy to cover for a player that can’t excell at both, you simply can’t hide the sub par guy’s limitations on every single play. Offenses will work to exploit his weakness and as stated above, one mistep can be a huge difference making play.

Where the Eagles can and I assume will find value until they eventually draft a young stud safety is with a savy vet nearing the end of his career. The savy vet will be less likely to be fooled by playaction and less likely to be overwhelmed by multiple responsibilities and can compensate with his football knowledge in a lot of ways alleviating some of the concern over giving up big plays while still being a more bargain level FA due to age.

That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised to see us sign an older veteran safety like Eric Weddle who might be a little cheaper than the younger guys but would hopefully, as a veteran, not be overwhelmed by the added responsibilities in our scheme.

  706. 706 Greg Richards said at 9:51 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I don’t think Osemele is the target, but Jeff Allen has similar versatility. He has experience at LG and RT and one would think could play RG too.

  707. 707 solid said at 10:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

What I didn’t know, which Tommy pointed out above, is that Allen has missed games due to injury in the recent past. This could affect how much we would be willing to pay versus other teams who are also desperate.

  708. 708 Greg Tulino said at 12:39 AM on March 8th, 2016:

I take that back. I didn’t realize how much he’s expected to receive on the open market this year. Whoops. Still think they’ll either go with one of the young studs or a solid veteran. But, not an inexperienced lower tier guy without a lot of upside.

  720. 720 laeagle said at 9:05 PM on March 7th, 2016:

  721. 721 Jernst said at 9:37 PM on March 7th, 2016:

True…Maxwell wasn’t nearly as bad as people made him out to be and seemed to settle down much more after his bad game in week 1. He was a clear upgrade over Cary and/or Fletcher, even if he was grossly over paid. Either way, I think moving on from his cumbersome contract is the right move, even if in the short term we might be taking a step back. Good teams have good cap allocation where their highest paid players are also their best players. It’s really impossible to conclude that Maxwell was/is/would ever be the Eagles 2nd or 3rd best player. And, thus it was never a winning scenario to have him paid as such.

If they can resign Carroll or sign a decent starting CB in FA to pair with Rowe we’ll be more than adequate. Carroll and Rowe wouldn’t be a world beating pair of CBs, but I think Carroll would do just fine holding the fort down while we rebuild and round out the team.

I don’t know about that. Kiko had a stellar rookie season and got hurt. He got hurt again this past season and didn’t look that great when he returned. I get the feeling his career projects similarly to what happened to Stewart Bradley.

  733. 733 Corry said at 10:24 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Well, I do’nt think that Howie threw him in just to get rid of him. The Dolphins would have to have wanted him or at least settled on Alonso.

  734. 734 solid said at 10:27 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Who knows. People can be petty like that. See Desean, Brandon Boykin, and Evan Mathis.

  735. 735 RC5000 said at 10:15 PM on March 7th, 2016:

    They’re moving from 3-4 to 4-3. Kiko isn’t a 4-3 SAM. Maxwell isn’t a press corner.

  736. 736 eagleyankfan said at 10:18 PM on March 7th, 2016:

    didn’t he run a 4-3 in Buff?

  737. 737 RC5000 said at 10:20 PM on March 7th, 2016:

    He wasn’t a SAM.

  738. 738 Will:Howie is Nino Brown said at 10:21 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I get what you’re saying, but who said he was a SAM here?

  739. 739 RC5000 said at 10:21 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Watch them bring in a SAM to replace him.

  740. 740 Will:Howie is Nino Brown said at 10:22 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I think we were going to bring in a SAM no matter what as there isn’t one on the roster.

  741. 741 RC5000 said at 10:49 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Sure they may have I agree. I thought Whitehead was a possibility but when you’re talking about continuity you can’t worry about it that much for a backup. Acho could be signed and be a backup that gives us continuity anyway. Alonso didn’t play that much with these guys and it will be a different defense.

  742. 742 FairOaks said at 10:21 PM on March 7th, 2016:

At the very very worst he’d be a backup at another position then. Eagles are already thin at LB, and Kiko has great upside and is cheap. No reason to get rid of him unless it was about the return (or the only way the Dolphins would take the entire Maxwell contract).

  743. 743 Jernst said at 10:26 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I agree. Kiko was like a very cheap lottery ticket. He was worth hanging on to. However, if he allowed us to get a decent draft pick in return with the trade I have absolutely no problem with us moving on from someone who looked clearly damaged (both mentally and physically) last year.

  744. 744 solid said at 10:33 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I think we are overvaluing our own on this one. Other than that amazing one-handed interception in the Falcons game, what has he done since 2013?

  745. 745 FairOaks said at 10:40 PM on March 7th, 2016:

How many games has he been truly healthy since 2013? Basically that one game.

It’s a definite possibility he’ll never get back to what he was, but you don’t simply get rid of that kind of guy making peanuts, since he could still be great and his replacement will cost more. So, his inclusion was about either having the Dolphins take all of Maxwell’s contract, or a better draft pick return, or both. For a good return, then it can make a lot of sense to move him. We’re all interested in the full details of these trades, as they are impossible to judge otherwise.

  746. 746 solid said at 10:47 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Perhaps. Or it paves the way for the eagles to sign a linebacker they prefer in free agency that would only sign if they were going to start, as Tommy postulated above about Whitehead.

IMO, I don’t think a linebacker with 2 ACL tears in 2 years, who banks on his athleticism over his ability to digest plays, would sway a team to take on such an albatross of a contract even if it was restructured. But that’s me. You could be right as well.

  747. 747 Cafone said at 11:01 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Alonzo is a FA after next season. Were the Eagles going to sign him long term? It sure doesn’t look like it. He may not have even been a starter this year. There’s no way he’s a SAM and was he going to start at WIL over Kendricks who is better than him and signed through 2019? It looks like the Eagles are selling him at peak value.

  748. 748 FairOaks said at 11:06 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Alonzo is an RFA after this season. He did not accrue a league year when he was injured in 2014 so he needs to spend another year until full free agency. So, he’ll be cheap property for two more seasons (unless he warrants a big raise after this season). His salary is fine for even a backup — he may be more of a lottery ticket at this point, but the Eagles need LB backups too.

I have no problem with trading him to get a good return, though.

  749. 749 Dude said at 11:21 PM on March 7th, 2016:

“How many games has he been truly healthy since 2013?”

Dude, it’s 2016. He made 1, yes 1, big play in 2015. He got hurt again. He didn’t play much on a defense that was on the field A LOT. His old DC didn’t want him. (I’m assuming that because I doubt Howie is booting players that our new DC wants to keep) If we get anything for him, it is worth it.

  750. 750 RC5000 said at 10:28 PM on March 7th, 2016:

O.P. was discussing continuity and him as a starter which was what my reply was about. Generally you worry about starters with continuity. He didn’t even play that much here.
If we get Bradham as backup and Whitehead it will be moot. I]m not saying we will but lets see how it works out at LB. As for him being low money, we opened up cap space in the deal so it’s a trade off.

  751. 751 eagleyankfan said at 10:31 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Kiko opened cap space or you saying Kiko helped open cap space?

  752. 752 RC5000 said at 10:34 PM on March 7th, 2016:

They opened up 5.8 million in cap space in the trade. Pt is what it is.

  753. 753 Cafone said at 10:47 PM on March 7th, 2016:

Where was the upside? Alonzo is a long term project who currently does not have strength needed to play in the NFL. He’s got the physique of Todd Pinkston. Yeah, I understand he spent a lot of time injured, but he obviously spent none of that time in the weight room.

And, let’s be honest. The guy is stupid. I’m not a medical expert, but I believe the technical term is “dum as gum”.

  754. 754 FairOaks said at 11:00 PM on March 7th, 2016:

He was certainly very good in 2013. The question is can he regain that form. For a cheap contract, you keep him to find out — unless there was some value in return in a trade.

  755. 755 Cafone said at 11:04 PM on March 7th, 2016:

I’d be shocked if Schwartz did not have a say in these moves.

I’d also be shocked if Schwartz watched film of Kiko Alonzo this past season and said “that’s a guy I want to build my defense around”

Frankly, I’d be surprised if Schwartz watched film of Kiko Alonzo this past season and said “That’s a guy who is going to see significant time on the field”

I wouldn’t be sad to see that, or to see Murray light it up in Tennessee. Scheme fit, player attitude, team fit, they’re all real things. CK seemed to think they were the be all, end all of building a team. Obviously they weren’t, but sometimes a guy just doesn’t want to be here. Our fan base can inspire that in people.
