Depth for the OL?

This was interesting news.

Wisniewski is good enough to start, but isn’t good enough to be a good starter. He would be a solid addition as a backup/competition. Wiz played LG early in his career and then transitioned to C. He has okay size at 6-3, 305 and just turned 27.

With David Molk’s retirement, the Eagles don’t have a clear backup to Jason Kelce. Josh Andrews and Barrett Jones are in the mix, but neither has the kind of game experience you prefer in such a key position. Wiz has plenty of experience and could be an excellent backup.

He also might challenge for the LG spot. Right now it would seem Allen Barbre, Matt Tobin and Andrew Gardner are going to battle for that role. Wiz has more starting experience and natural ability than any of them.

I’m sure Wiz is looking for a chance to start as much as anything. The Eagles can offer him a chance to prove himself, but clearly it would just be a chance. There will be competition and the team will go with who wins the job. No one is going to be promised anything. None of them deserve that.

We’ll see what happens. Wiz has waited this long. He’s not going to sign just for the heck of it. He’s trying to find the right spot for a strange time in his career. No one will give him a starting job so he’s got t find a team that will at least give him a chance.

*****

The Eagles need help at RB. Davis might be worth a conditional pick. Or the Eagles could just wait to see if the Chiefs cut him.

Doug Pederson spent the past 3 years with Davis and knows whether he’s worth bringing in. If Pederson has no interest, that doesn’t say much for Davis.

The reason Davis would make some sense is that he’s 227 pounds. Ryan Mathews has good size, but Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner are smaller RBs.

*****

Smart to give him a look, but I’ll be shocked if they like what they see. Hack has a great arm, but aside from that he is all over the place.

Pederson wants to run a variation of the WCO, where footwork is crucial for the QB. Hack has terrible footwork. I just can’t see him being a good fit.

I hope Hack goes to Houston so we can see if Bill O’Brien can get him back on the right track. I don’t like Hack as a prospect at all, but I’d love to see him get to the right spot and succeed. The NFL is a better league when there are good QBs and I’ll always pull for a Penn State guy at the next level.

I just watched Hack for the first time and went to another prospect after a game and a half. When you miss easy screen passes, consistently throw the ball in strange locations, never see where a blitz is coming and are a class A douche, you’re are gonna be passed on over and over again. On another note, I like what I see out of Brissett. Has some pretty dope accuracy on the short and intermediate stuff. Can put juice on the ball but can also loft the ball. Decent pocket presence which is improved by the fact that he can take a hit and stay up. Mobile enough for a big guy and it would be nice to see Pederson keep a bit of the option. He has played under center and is good rolling out to his right. The knocks are his deep ball is pretty blah, so you worry about getting very many big plays, if any. In the Temple game he was very good at taking what the defense gave him and tossing the ball away instead of trying to force it. However, in other games he would perhaps rely a bit too much on his ability to take a hit and give up a sack/ hit where he didn’t have too. Overall, wouldn’t be upset if he was selected as a developmental prospect but his lack of deep ball accuracy will limit his ability to be a “big play” qb. I think his issues with getting sacked can be fixed with more trust in his line.

  3. 3 Media Mike said at 5:11 AM on April 1st, 2016:

I think the ceiling on Brissett is so low that I wouldn’t waste a pick on him.

Hack, based on arm talent and freshman year film, is going to be taken earlier than he should. I can’t match any potential reward with him to the risk somebody is going to take with him in terms of how early he’ll go.

  4. 4 Fufina said at 8:46 AM on April 1st, 2016:

I would not be crushed if the eagles took Hack in the 3rd. He needs to rebuild his game and mechanics entirely… And that could take 2-3 years but there is raw materials there to work with. Prefer we take a QB with enough raw talent that they have a chance to become a quality starter… Something is just do not seeing a Hogan (does not have an NFL arm) having. Same thing with Brissett and Prescott.

  20. 20 A_T_G said at 7:30 AM on April 1st, 2016:

My biggest concern with the idea of bringing in Knile Davis is Howie’s off season theme of pairs this year. He will be hard pressed to find another Knile, and so I fear a return of Butch Davis in some capacity.

  21. 21 Crus57 said at 11:22 AM on April 1st, 2016:

maybe pairing him with Chip’s state of deknile?

  22. 22 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:02 AM on April 1st, 2016:

Not knowing what we have in backup Centers Josh Andrews and Barrett Jones, adding Wiz would be an excellent depth signing,,. Finally having a credible Backup Center would make me feel so much better about Kelce’s past durability concerns, and if he can also provide an upgrade at LG, that’s just Gravy…. We brought him in for a visit, im really hoping we don’t let him out the building without signing him.
    ..
Adding KNiles makes zero sense to me unless they plan on Flipping Mathews on Draft night.. We NEED rookie Legs at RB. We already have veterans in Ryan/sproles, we NEED to add a rookie RB… I’ll pass on KC’s #4 RB…
    .
By the time this process is over, the Eagles will have worked out like 80% of the QB prospects, so no reason to try and read into each QB visit

  23. 23 Rellihcs said at 8:20 AM on April 1st, 2016:

The word need in your post is only zero percent correct. I’m not a huge N. Davis proponent, but your logic is useless. If he came, and we had no youth at RB this year, but are successful with the RB Corp this year, we can draft youth next year in what is supposed to be a stellar loaded RB class. Therefore your logic is wrong.

  24. 24 eagleyankfan said at 10:46 AM on April 1st, 2016:

I know how old he is, and still have absolutely zero interest,,,, need to draft a rookie that we have under contract for the next 4 or 5 years..
    ..
If KC wants to give us Knile for Kenjon Barner, be my guest,.. But I wouldnt give up any of our draft picks for him, not even our 7th

  26. 26 Bob said at 8:35 AM on April 1st, 2016:

Wiz is better then the 3 back up’s we have now. Tobin is lousy and should be cut based on last seasons. Gardner is the top back up and Barbre is a decent back up too. Would like to see Bunches step up and compete with Wiz if we sign him.

The word on the street is he has a fumbling problem, and I’d say a 1.7% butterfinger rate paired with only 3.3 yards per carry means the word is correct. I still say if he fumbles more than Tiki, he fumbles too much. ”

  34. 34 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:52 PM on April 1st, 2016:

I just think that if we are going to carry two talented but ONLY temporary RBs in Mathews and Sproles who’s time in philly is limited, Id prefer using that #3 RB spot on a draft pick that we hope can eventually be a #1 RB for us when We move on from Ryan and Sproles.
    ..
If we do add KNiles I hope it’s a situation where we trade KC a player that wasn’t going to make the Roster anyway, hoping that the RB we do draft, ends up beating KNiles in Camp and taking his roster spot
    ..
I don’t see Him ever becoming a #1 RB… And we have enough Fumbling concerns with Ryan Mathews and us super violent collisions. Are we really going to carry two RB that are fumbling concerns?

The Eagles, Bears, and Bucs could have varying levels of interest in franchise-tagged RE Muhammad Wilkerson.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini polled the rest of the ESPN NFL Nation reporters. Phil Sheridan, who covers the Eagles, cites Wilkerson’s local connection, as he went to Temple and grew up in the area, He’d also be an upgrade inside to pair with Fletcher Cox in new DC Jim Schwartz’s 4-3 defense. The Bears have the cap space and have been loosely connected to Wilkerson over the past month. Tampa Bay is one of the more pass-rush desperate teams in the league. Wilkerson trade chatter will heat up before the draft, but it’s tough to see him actually being dealt.

  81. 81 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:16 PM on April 1st, 2016:

Think he will end up with the Dolphins. I would have liked to ship Ryan Mathews to Miami, but I doubt they would do Another trade with us so soon, after they took some heat from the Maxwell/Kiko trade.

I have zero interest in Knile…. We NEED to add a rookie RB at some point in the draft

  82. 82 A_T_G said at 2:34 PM on April 1st, 2016:

I’ll take Mathews over Knile. Mathews’ worst season still had him a full half yard per carry higher than Knile’s 3.3, and fumbling issues beyond those with Mathews as well.

No reason to add another moving part just for the sake of change. If he is any more than a cheap upgrade on Barner, forget him and keep Mathews.

    …..
Mathews appears to be that fools gold. I really like the way he plays. Keep hoping that he survives a season without injury. The dude can produce if he stayed healthy.

  85. 85 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:32 PM on April 1st, 2016:

I don’t expect Ryan to play 16 games ever again,,, Injuries and some fumbling woes are just the cost of doing business with him. The Dude is big, Powerful, explosive and his running style creates all types of violent collisions, and because of that style of play, at this stage in his career I don’t think we will ever see him play all 16 games… Id consider getting 14 games out of him a great Year.
    ..
The guy had some real nice runs last year behind what was a mess of an OL for chunks of the season. Im interested in seeing What he looks like Running behind Brooks/Lane (im expecting big things out of the right side of our OL) next year…
    ..
But if we are going to go into the season with Sproles who is up there in age, and Ryan who we can’t expect to play 16 games, I think our #3 RB needs to be a YOUNG STUD. knile isn’t close to being good enough to make me feel comfortable going into a season with Ryan and Sproles.
    ..
Think it’s important to fill that 3rd RB spot with a rookie who is talented enough to have a chance at eventually becoming our #1’RB for this next era of Eagle football. Knile will NEVER be a #1 RB, so I really don’t want to lose a Draft pick acquiring him

Don’t think we can carry a RB like Knile or Kenjon as our #3… When our two best RB’s are only temporary Eagles (Ryan n Sproles), I would think that we would look to draft a RB into that #3 spot, so we at least have a chance of getting Lucky and seeing the RB we draft go on to eventually become our #1 RB when Sproles and Mathews time in Philly expires,
    .
We pretty much Know what davis and Barner are by now, and Neither are going to grow into our Future feature backs. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a kid in the Draft who Will at least be a Knile or Barner Caliber RB, but at least have some chance of getting lucky and finding a Gem who can become more than Barner or Knile caliber RB… We are going to have to start looking for our future #1 RB and Carrying Knile/Ryan AND Sproles will keep us from even having a chance at finding a future Gem in the draft.
    ..
If we knew that Ryan and Sproles could be our RB’s the next 3 or 4 years, adding a guy like Knile would make a little more sense to me, but knowing we have to start thinking about our future at RB, I think it would be a mistake to carry a RB like Knile or Barner who we already know have no chance of ever becoming our Feature back

    ..
If we are going to end up carrying a FB, I was hoping we would end up trading Taylor Hart or Kenjon Barner for the FB from the Niners that I assume chip won’t value..

Agree 100%. Was also thinking outside the box on this one but maybe Celek has some snaps at fullback. Good blocking, and doubles as a pass catching weapon out of the backfeild.

Maybe not immediatly line up in the backfeild but motion over there to catch D’s off gaurd.

  144. 144 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:55 PM on April 2nd, 2016:

The thought has actually crossed my mind too. We probably don’t want to have to use Celek at FB too often, because he is such a capabke blocker battling at the Line of scrimmage, and in Short yardage/goal Line, ideally we would have Celek at TE blocking on the Line of scrimmage AND a Fullback.. Of course we can Probably compensate by going with a jumbo TE package where we put Extra offensive Tackles in the Game replacing Celek as a TE blocking on the line of scrimmage, which can free up Celek to line up at FB…. The possibility has crossed my mind, but it should be easier for Trey Burton to make the transition to FB than it is for Celek. Burton actually has Experiemce linning up in the backfield and even carrying the ball as a RB… He was even used by Chip as a RB late in the game, trying to preserve the Lead, so transitioning to FB shouldn’t be too hard for him. It probably will come down to his Size/strength. He has what, 3 years of NFL strength and conditioning, program under his belt already? As long as he is at least around 230-240lbs. He shouldn’t have too much trouble making the transition to FB for us..
    ..
I think it be a pretty nice addition to our offense if Burton can handle the transition to FB because he is an under rated pass catching weapon, and in the west coast Offense, a FB can be a sneaky pass catching weapon. burtons Athleticism, height and pass catching ability can be weaponized at the FB spot in this offense. Adding his ability as a pass catcher out of the backfield excites me, but for that to happen we need him to be able to handle lead blocking for a RB. Burton is a great ST player, under rated pass catching weapon that can be a real nice addition from the FB spot, and it would allow us to keep Celek battling at the line of scrimmage, while Ertz focuses on being one of our best pass catching WR/TE
    ..
Celek probably hasn’t spent much time linning up in the backfield, it’s probably an easier more natural transition for Burton who has experience playing as a RB. Instead of hitting the hole with the ball in his hands, he now has to hit the hole looking to make contact with a LB.. It’s not exactly Rocket Science so hopefully Burton proves caoable of it so we don’t have to carry a FB on the 53 man roster.
    ..
I strongly feel that Burton can be much more of a pass catching weapon than we saw under chip, and his easiest path to more snaps is winning the starting FB spot… Im really hoping he can make this transition so we don’t have to carry a FB on the roster, or ask Celek to do something foreign to him so late in his career….but it definitely crossed my mind too

  145. 145 wee2424 said at 6:42 PM on April 2nd, 2016:

We don’t have two WRs who are better, so he should expect to start, he probably will.

  166. 166 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:47 PM on April 1st, 2016:

For him to start, I would think that would mean that they are keeping Jordan in the slot. But since Pederson will give a serious look to Mathews on the outside, it would be great for us if Jordan proved he could thrive in that role and pair with Nelson as our outside tandem, leaving Givens, Randle, Huff and a rookie to compete for the starting slot WR.
    .
I think Randle could end up being a solid addition even tho he is a disgusting New York Giant. id be thrilled just to get those 8 TDs the Giants got out of him, maybe expand his role a little once we get in the redzone, if we can get even close to a TD every other game out of him, that would be a huge addition considering we haven’t been too great in the Redzone.
    ..
People like to automatically assume that Jordan won’t ever grow into a quality outside WR, but im not at all ready to say what a kid with his work ethic won’t ever be able to do…. And if People are comfortable assuming Randle can start on the outside, it really doesn’t make much sense to me to say that Rande can play outside, but Jordan can’t ever be more than a slot..
    ..
    RR: 6’3, 210lbs, 33″ arm length, 9.5(Hands), 4.55 (40 yard dash), 31(vert), 15reps(Bench)
    .
    JM: 6’3, 213lbs, 33.25″ arm length, almost 10.5(hands), 4.46(40), 35.5(Vert).
    ..
Laquan Treadwell: 6’2, 221lbs, 33 (3/8ths) arms, 9.5 hands, 40 time (Not fast), bench press 12 reps, vert jump 33 inches
    ..
jordan is younger, just as tall, stronger, faster, bigger hands, longer arms, and has almost 4 inches more on his vertical leap than Randle.
    .,
Many people think Treadwell is the best WR in this draft..,the ONLY thing Treadwell measured in better than Jordan is Treadwell is 10lbs heavier, but that extra bulk translated to 12 reps on the bench and Jordan almòst doubled that with 21’reps… And Treadwell can’t blame long arms for his weak bench, when Jordans are almost the same exact size.. Jordan is a little Taller, his 40 time is way faster, he jumps higher than Treadwell, both have long arms, Jordan has bigger hands..
    .,
maybe We find out that Jordan is best used in the slot full time, but im no where even close to being ready to just assume that two years into his career, just because the “mad King” chip Kelly ONLY used him in the slot, especially when he spent his first two years as a pro under a WR coach that HASNT adequately developed anyone since joining our staff…. If Jordan isn’t an outside WR today, he has more than enough tools to be worth trying to teach and develope him as an Outside WR.
    ..
What Jordan Mathews does at outside WR is probably going to be one of the biggest questions of this summer.
    .
We are most likely going to draft our #6 WR at some point, and while Rueban Randle and Chris Givens ARENT flashy individual signings, I do think they help clearly upgrade our WR group as a whole from what it has been these past few years,, I like that Huff is our ONLY WR that lacks height, but he has strength and explosiveness for Greg Lewis to work with.. I like that Stylistcally, Givens gives us some deep ball ability we have Lacked, while Rueban is a different type of WR who can be an added Redzone threat for us.. So while they aren’t big individual additions, I do think they will help make our WR group better than it has been… Hoping the Rookie we draft is more of speed Deamon than another big body….
    .
we really need Greg Lewis to prove that he is a class above Bicknell as a WR coach. Hopefully the more sophisticated pro style routes that Doug Brings, compared to the allegedly more simple chip routes will also have a big impact on further developing Jordan, Nelson and Huff into the caliber of weapons we need them to be.

Agholor was a first round pick of a previous regime whom was rated as the worst WR last year. Yes, he does have talent, yes he does have promise, but i dont think its smart to pen him in as a starter on the outside if Mathews moves to outside, or maybe at all.

Comsidering his compeition is going to be more then likely Huff, yes i wouldnt mind him starting. He has flaws, but his numbers are equal to very solid #2 WR numbers.

Keep in mind who our current group of WRs are. I think i would even want Givens over Huff if Huff doesnt truely impress in TC

I know it’s April 1st, but these stories are real (I think): Joey Bosa will NOT sign with the Ravens if they draft him. Why? Because their HC is the brother of the HC of a hated rival of the school he is leaving. Wow. If the Eagles had an interest in him, I hope this gives them pause.
Additionally, The Minnesota Wild are not only leaving Minnesota for Wuhan, China, they’re leaving the NHL for the KHL. Can’t say this troubles me at all. Bettman and the intransigent NHL need to get their heads out of the sand. Ice hockey today is second only to soccer in its global fandom. Virtually all of the other countries that have professional ice hockey, play closer to the rules of international hockey, with larger rink size, where opponent skaters cannot stand in the crease, and where fighting results in immediate ejection. The NHL owners and insiders are afraid to rid a fantastic sport of “the goon element” because they believe it will equal empty seats. IMO ice hockey is the greatest spectator sport ever invented. If you are at a game or watching on TV, you cannot look away…except for the pathetic TV timeouts. If the NHL doesn’t want to lose more ground to its global competitors, it first needs to clean up its game.

That’s pretty dumb if he said that. I’ve heard he’s been slipping on boards after poor combine interviews…

I also think the Wild thing is definately April Fools…

The Bosa thing is an April Fool’s joke.

This has nothing to do with this article. Have you guys noticed that Patrick Chung, who just signed for one year/5.5 million and had a great year for the Pats, and Kurt Coleman who had a great year for the Panthers used to be Eagles and played poorly. So is it the coaching they got here (or not) ?or did they need time to develop? These were safety’s who had great years (pro bowl years) for other teams.

Each is a different case. In NE Chung plays in the box, doesn’t have to cover that much, that’s opposite to what he was expected to do here. I think Coleman is a good player, obviously playing a ball-hawking role in a much better overall defense.
