More on Seumalo

Lots of things to talk about with the Eagles pick of OL Issac Seumalo.

My take – I liked the pick, but didn’t love it. There were other players that I preferred still on the board. I’m shocked Joe Dahl and Kyle Murphy are still available. I think each guy has the potential to be a starting LT. Christian Westermann is a pure OG, but he’s a terrific athlete with a good nasty streak. He played LG in college and could have been a plug ‘n’ play type prospect at that spot for the Eagles.

One of my issues with Seumalo is that his versatility is a double-edged sword. I watched him play LT, RG and C. I saw good moments at each spot, but it wasn’t nearly the same as watching game after game of another prospect playing the same position. That allows you to see the little things.

Seumalo looked best at C, where he played the most. I thought he was up and down as a G and OT. The Eagles were able to study as many of his 37 starts as they wanted. They also could watch the All-22 footage, which can be critical with interior OL.

Why not OT – Some people are convinced the Eagles had to add an OT to develop to take over for Jason Peters. That would have been nice, but wasn’t a necessity. Right now the Eagles have Peters, Lane Johnson and Dennis Kelly as their top 3 OTs. Kelly can be an effective spot starter and backup. The Eagles can also put Andrew Gardner back outside. He lists as a T/G on the roster.

Lane Johnson can still be the LT of the future. Finding a RT isn’t nearly as difficult and doesn’t have to be done with a high pick or in dramatic fashion. The Eagles can go get a LT next offseason if they want. That isn’t a necessity for now.

What’s up at LG – Right now Allen Barbre, Malcolm Bunche and Seumalo are going to compete for the job. Barbre has the most experience. Bunche is the biggest/strongest. Seumalo is obviously a player the Eagles think highly of.

Character still matters – Chip Kelly was very picky about his players. The Eagles have loosened up on that a bit, but character is still critical. Seumalo rated highly in this area. He was a good student. He was a team captain. Seumalo was selfless with his willingness to move all over and not just stay at one spot.

He is the son of a college assistant. That may not sound like a big deal, but kids of football coaches often learn to truly love the sport. Anyone can love playing for 3 hours on Saturday or Sunday, but it takes someone truly dedicated to love practice, working out and film study. That stuff isn’t fun to the average person. The son of a coach appreciates the work that goes into being ready for games and is more likely to understand the value of that preparation.

What’s up at C – Jason Kelce is the Eagles starting Center. That said, the Eagles have much better depth there. Stefen Wisniewski has started there in the NFL. Josh Andrews and Barrett Jones are backups with potential. Now you have Seumalo in the mix. That’s a lot of guys who could play C.

I don’t think Kelce is in danger of losing his job, but I do think the Eagles want to push him a bit. There is no question that he needs to play better this year.

Is Seumalo the Jordan Hicks of interior OL – It would be pretty darn cool if Seumalo got on the field and played at a high level. We’ll have to see how that goes. I think he has the potential to play this year. I’ve told this story quite a few times over the years, but it bears repeating. I watched a small school all-star game in 2005. There was a kid playing LT that there was some buzz on. I remember writing after the game that the player had some potential, but needed a lot of work and wouldn’t be playing any time soon, especially at LT. I went to Training Camp a few months later. With Tra Thomas hurt, there was rookie Todd Herremans at LT. And doing a solid job. You never know how prospects are going to adjust to the NFL. Put them in a spot and coach them up.

I don’t anticipate Seumalo starting this year, but he will get a shot to win playing time. He has the size, skill and athleticism to win a job and contribute right away.

I’m looking forward to seeing him settle in at one spot and show what he can do.

of course he will, he has started his entire career and signed a prove it deal trying to earn an extension,, I would assume that Wis can beat out Barbe and Tobin…
    ..
The question is can he beat out Gardner, this rookie and Bunche who is a big unknown at this point…no idea if he will win the job, but he wouldn’t be an eagle if we didn’t give him a chance to compete for a starting Guard spot, since he knows he isn’t taking Kelce’s spot

The one drawback to this is Jimmy is going to have to think of something to replace his 4-5 “we haven’t drafted an OL in X years” articles now. I suggest stick figures of Sam Bradford being sad in as many different scenarios as possible. Sad on the bench, sad getting fined, sad walking down the street getting heckled by Eagles fans, sad after he gets released and only secures a 1 year backup deal for 2 million.

  11. 11 wee2424 said at 1:59 AM on April 30th, 2016:

The more i read and watch video on him the more i am impressed and satisfied with the pick.

The biggest knock on him is that he doesnt have a dominate physical natural ability besides agility. More upper body strength is needed and can be slightly improved, but not to much because he does not posses an ideal frame.

Is an ideal technician in which he uses to overcome that he isnt physically dominate. Do no expect him to blow people off the line but rather use his superior technique to open a hole. While he will not purely dominate a DL from the snap he has the tenacity to eventually put a defender on his back.

Defenders on the second level will need to watch out for him. He isnt fast, but more importantly he is quick/agile and the football IQ to immediately know who to block on that second level. Again has the tenacity to bury a defender on that 2nd level.

Very smart and will be studying alot of tape. You will more then likely not mentally fool him which will help on loops and stunts.

As far as pass blocking he doesnt have an ideal base and may give up some push but contrary to what i originally read does a good job of sustaining blocks. Anchors extremely well, gets low, and has good hips.

The comment Tommy made about him and Hicks could prove to be very accurate. Besides being at a lesser known school the other main reason he isnt well known is simply because the amount of games he has missed due to injury throughout the years he was in college. Like Hicks has a true love for the game. I firmly believe that if it werent for injuries he could very well have been drafted higher or at the least we would not have initially been asking who he is when we grabbed him.

His versatility is a big plus and helps to add much needed depth along the OL. Will be equally effective at G and C.

Dont expect him to wow you, but he will consistently get the job done and more.

Due to his high level of technique i would not be surprised if he ended up starting this year at G and not due to injury. Would still ideally like to see improved upper body strength, and it can be done but not at a real significant level.

Will be a good player for us and possibly/hopefully much sooner then later.

I encourage you to read more into him, and not just one report but multiple to get a better picture. I think you will walk away impressed.

  26. 26 BobSmith77 said at 3:09 AM on April 30th, 2016:

The only thing that raised a red flag to me were the foot injuries and surgeries in had in such a short period. Serious foot injuries like this on a big man in any professional sports never seem to work out particularly well especially if they happen when the player was younger.

As a few others alluded to, this pick to me seems more about possibility moving from Kelce by the end of this year. Kelce was a hot mess at times last screwing up even the most basic stuff at times. Doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy either that is a true leader among the players in the locker room either even if the media appointed him as one the last year or so.

  27. 27 Cafone said at 4:49 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Kelce isn’t cheap either. The Eagles could save some money at center after this season if Seumalo can start.

  28. 28 ColoradoEaglesFan said at 3:34 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Linebacker is a need that should be addressed in the fifth round, or I hope the Eagles address. Any chance Barwin can back up outside lb, and Kendricks move to mlb in a pinch?

  29. 29 Fufina said at 4:02 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Barwin could play SLB on game day if there was an injury but he would be misused there. Think Braman and Long were playing SLB in mini camp which is interesting and they could be decent SLB solutions in a pinch. Long is such a sad story since he has been very good for 2 years in camp to then be lost for the season and now we are not in an ideal scheme fit for him… and if he gets cut it may be a though path to another chance with his injury history.

Hicks/Kendrick/Goode is a decent 3 LB’s to cover MLB and WLB. Problem is this is not a deep ILB draft and the talent will dry up fast. On option i would be open to is trying to convert Jayron Kearse to being an undersized WLB. Think we will end up bringing Acho back as our 4th MLB/WIL.

  30. 30 Media Mike said at 7:03 AM on April 30th, 2016:

I hope not. I’d much rather have him up front in a 4-3.

  31. 31 Gary Barnes said at 3:51 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Hopefully Roseman will shift to defense now. Make that unit dominant again which will help Wentz succeed. We need help at CB, LB and S.

  32. 32 Fufina said at 4:18 AM on April 30th, 2016:

I don’t really agree. We have a bunch of decent project CB’s – Watkins/Sheppard/Randall/Rice – add in McKelvin/Brooks as decent vet back up we really only want to add a CB1… i don’t think anyone we get in the 5-6th rounds will be a better project than our young guys or have a significantly better chance to be ‘the guy’.

Think Safety is a weird spot – we have 2 expensive and quality long term starters in Jenkins and McLeod, a special teams maven in Maragos, McKelvin and Brooks could both spend time at Safety if injuries hit and Reynolds was fine when he played in spots last year. Add in the continued Couplin project i am not sure we ‘need’ to add a 4th safety although if one is BPA the sure.

MLB/WIL definitely needs a 4th guy… but i look at the players available in the 5th round and no name jumps off the list as someone i think looks decent. Maybe Blake Martinez if he is there in the 5th.

Personally i want to continue to hit offence – there should be some interesting RB’s available in the 5th, and we need to add a raw WR project. Same thing with OT and another guard would not be a bad addition if they were BPA.

Add in need to add at least 1 DT, and i think we will struggle to add more than 1 safety/LB/CB in the last 5 picks (especially since those are positions i do not think are deep at this point in this draft).

  33. 33 Gary Barnes said at 5:00 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Some good points, but the starters and depth at CB are average or unproven in my view. The goal may not be to compete this year, but we have not had a high level CB since Samuel and have really struggled to acquire and develop talent at that position. Rowe may pan out, but it is unknown right now.

LB has better starters, but the known quantities have extensive injury histories and again the depth is really thin. Maybe this is a transition year anyway until Wentz is ready to take over fully, but that needs to be addressed.

I agree on DL too, the pass rush is critical to our success defensively. We have some good options there, but no game breakers besides Fletch. It would be great to be able to swarm & pound QB consistently. That would make every.part of our defense better.

I do not see a urgent need at WR. It goes back to what I believe are the critical positions on a team: DE, CB, OL and QB. The WR should be fine if Wentz and the new talent + current starters on the OL pan out and do their jobs effectively and consistently.

  34. 34 Sifter said at 8:53 AM on April 30th, 2016:

All those things sound great, but it’s very optimistic to find starters in round 5. Better to look for positions that need depth, and hope one or two of them turn out to be better than projected.
I think we definitely need a RB, to push Matthews and potentially replace Sproles who is 32 and off contract soon. There should be a few available as only 3 or 4 got picked already.
After that look at a LB for depth. D-Line and Safety probably next. Injuries to starters in those spots, and we’d be pretty thin.

  35. 35 Media Mike said at 7:04 AM on April 30th, 2016:

  51. 51 Ankerstjernen said at 5:38 AM on April 30th, 2016:

  52. 52 Greg Richards said at 6:31 AM on April 30th, 2016:

If he had never played the left side, you wonder about his footwork being able to transition from one side to the other. If he had only played T and never played G, you worry about him having enough bend to play low. If he’s played LT and RG well, he can play LG well.

RB: Howard, Booker, Dixon, Perkins, Williams
DT: Ridgeway, Billings, Day, Ioannidis, Henry
    DB: Houston-Carson

Eagles have missed having a swing player who can play C/G and T at a stretch for a long time – and that is something hugely valuable on game day. Random:
    – Kelly OT was just extended for a year so back-up OT covered & not a must
    – Martin DT just signed so back-up DT covered & not a must from this draft
    – no recent activities at RB or LB to cover obvious needs
    – expect LB & RB to be addressed today
    – additional ammo (picks) could come from SB & HAH (Huff, Allen, Hart) who
were scheme fits or favorites of CK; SB doesn’t seem to be on the move but the other

  70. 70 Fufina said at 8:22 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Not that he is going to be there probably but i like Blake Martinez is a smart guy who could be a really solid LB. Lacks the long speed to be elite or to cover down field but i think he could come in and be a reliable MLB and just be that steady 4th LB that can come in and do a job.

  71. 71 Greg Richards said at 8:28 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Really hoping we can get at least 2 of these guys. Theres still a bunch of players that i really like available…josh perry, jeremy cash, paul perkins, hassan ridgeway, miles killebrew, kenneth dixon, etc

  77. 77 Wintrode said at 8:37 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Go get Scooby. He would be perfect depth at ILB and just plays nasty and tenacious. Philly will love the kid.

    nice list.
shame we all have to wait almost as long for our next pick as we did for Seumalo! 70+ picks in between (less real-time though)

  79. 79 Fufina said at 8:58 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Hopefully the pick is more satisfying than Seumalo (who on reflection is a reasonable pick) but i had been willing Le’Raven Clark, Adolphus Washington, Braxton Miller or Javon Hargrave to be still there the last 10 picks :/

  80. 80 Kelce's Beard, O.G. said at 9:11 AM on April 30th, 2016:

i like him too, but javon was far and away my #1 choice.
    dixon probably 1b

Yeah, me too..damn steelers took him and sean davis…2 of my favourite targets.
We needed a guard that could come in and take barbre spot or step in after wisnieski leaves

  82. 82 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:23 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Feel like every yeàr the steelers end up with a kid I wanted, but the kids I wanted havent done much for the steelers so hopefully Hargrave doesn’t become a stud for them…
    ..
I think the steelers had the worst draft as far as the first two rounds go this year

  83. 83 Donald Kalinowski said at 8:45 AM on April 30th, 2016:

So the Jets would rather draft Hackenberg in the 2nd, and the Broncos would rather use a 1st and a 3rd on Lynch than trade for Bradford.

Things aren’t looking good for Bradford. If he becomes a free agent next year there might not be any team interested in him.

  84. 84 Greg Richards said at 8:46 AM on April 30th, 2016:

His best bet is to report, apologize, learn the offense and try to play lights out next year. Increase his value around the league. Helps him out and helps out the Eagles.

  85. 85 anon said at 9:50 AM on April 30th, 2016:

why do you think he wanted out this year? retread qbs have been popular over the last couple of years but at this point almost everyone has a young qb with promise. sam is almost def going to be a backup somewhere next year.

  86. 86 ACViking said at 10:05 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Bradford, with some luck, could become like QB Earl Morrall.

2nd overall pick in 1956. Never quite found his footing as a starter, until signing on with the Colts as a backup to John Unitas before the 1968 season.

After an injury to Unitas, Morrall won the MVP award as he led the Colts to a 13-1 record (and a SB loss to the Jets).

A few years later he resurfaced in Miami. Replaced an injured Bob Griese and led the Dolphins to their 14-0 regular season in 1972.

It could happen for Bradford. But first he’d have to accept being a backup.

I know it started with a double team but i like him just smashing Buckner into the turf. Highlight video’s always need to be taken with a pinch of salt but i like an Olineman who is finishes the play but putting the defensive player on the ground like that… sets a tone and sends a message.

Lets hope he settles into being a guard and plays at a high level, we have drafted really well in the 3rd recently and lets hope that this pick continues that trend.

  89. 89 anon said at 9:40 AM on April 30th, 2016:

looks like a technician more than a dominant guy. he’s good at blocking by redirection, but not often is he moving guys off the line. pederson likes versatile lineman – even in starters i guess- so you get what you get.

  90. 90 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:55 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Seemed to do a better job against Buckner than the kid Chip traded back into round 1 to take who got Tossed around by Buckner pretty bad

  92. 92 Mitchell said at 10:05 AM on April 30th, 2016:

  93. 93 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:16 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Seems very similar to Wisnewski. Im not very familiar with him tho. Does he fill our lacking Samoan Quota? Everyone knows each team needs at least 1 Samoan and 1 player with dreadlocks… I wanted Hargrave at #79, but as long as we are dumping picks into either side of the trenches I cant complain… Would have prefered a OT with Guard versatility, but I guess this kid had a higher grade than available tackles…

First OL we drafted since Lane,,,, we can’t ever again go this long without drafting OL

dallas is trying to trade G Ronald Leary, I hope a team doesn’t bail them out and trade them a Backup QB like Glennon, FOles, Keenum for Leary
    ..
Has Dallas forgotten that tbey don’t have any defensive ends the first 4 weeks of the season?

  105. 105 Tumtum said at 10:34 AM on April 30th, 2016:

To be honest i have to give it to them for staying true to their board. Reaching for a d lineman isnt going to probably make them better for the first four weeks and certainly not in the long haul.

Sucks to see other teams have stopped them from drafting guys like lynch and johnny the last few years.

  106. 106 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:48 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Shit, if Jaylon Smith ever gets healthy, no one can dare rip them for not taking a DE… But I didn’t like the DT they took in the 3rd… And it’s really not just about their first 4 games, even if Gregory and Lawrence DIDNT get suspended I think they need help there… The longer they ignore DE the better as far as I’m concerned. But I thought I would be cheering when they didn’t take a DE in round 2, but seeing them take Jaylon was no laughing matter, THATS for sure.. If that kid ever gets his health back, watch out

  107. 107 Insomniac said at 10:32 AM on April 30th, 2016:

I also didn’t like the pick at first but I’m warming up to it. Like Tommy said, Seumalo wasn’t even my first choice on the board. I would have much preferred Westerman or McGovern. Maybe we can get one of those guys in the fifth round today!

  108. 108 GermanEagle said at 10:33 AM on April 30th, 2016:

I’m not concerned about this pick at all. G is one of the easiest plug in and play positions in football for rookies. Besides punter.

  109. 109 eagleyankfan said at 10:41 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Im with you…3rd rounder.. not much to get excited or upset about ….

  110. 110 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:53 AM on April 30th, 2016:

Can’t rip the Eagles for investing in the trenches, I just wish I was more familiar with this kid. Obviously my familiarity with a kid has no bearing on him being a good pick or not… So hopefully we got a Gem.
    ..
I just hope this kid ends up being worthy of us taking him instead of trading down for more picks.
    ..
After round 1, I wanted the next two picks to go into the trenches, Hargrave in the 3rd, and OT with Guard versatility in the 4th… I didn’t quite get my way, but as long as they are building up the trenches, I can’t complain..
    ..
Hopefully the next pick goes into the trenches too (3 technique DT preferably)

Its about establishing a culture. “The Patriot Way” has sure won a few superbowls. Bill Walsh built a dynasty on culture. Eventhough it may not be the “high character” route the Seahawks and Steelers built cultures with guys that played with an edge. Culture has proven time and again that it leads to sustained sucess.

Browns coach Hue Jackson says he targeted Cody Kessler in the third round due to Kessler’s “pinpoint accuracy.”

Kessler completed nearly 68 percent of his passes in college, setting a school record at USC. “Accuracy (is what I’m looking for),” said Jackson. “He can throw the ball straight to the guy he’s throwing it to, and if you can’t, you can’t play in the NFL.” Responding to those who gave Kessler a pre-draft UDFA grade, Jackson said, “You have to trust me on this one.” On college tape, Jackson may have seen some Andy Dalton in Kessler’s game.

All this attention for what? Because we don’t cheer when our players play like Crap? Wentz already had to answer like 30 questions about Eagle fans, yet I can’t even remember the last first round pick that was more celebrated than Wentz or who got a warmer reception than Wentz has gotten. Seems like the Novacare has been in Giant Party celebration mode since we took Wentz.

Even better is the fact that the Giants have DRC and Janoris Jenkins, but Safety might be their weakest position, yet they still reached for another corner in Apple instead of the Stud Safety that the Raiders scooped up..
