Minicamp Closes

No more football until late July. Eagles coaches and players will have about 6 weeks of down time between now and the start of Training Camp. Thursday was a light day of practice, but there is always something to talk about.

First up is Brandon Lee Gowton of BGN.

• The Eagles did a lot of red zone work today. Here’s how Kansas City ranked in red zone efficiency while Pederson was the Chiefs‘ offensive coordinator.

2013 – 5th
2014 – 9th
2015 – 12th

This could be a key for the Eagles. They were 15th and 23rd in red zone percentage over the last couple of seasons. That is part of the reason the team was disappointing in both seasons. You must score TDs to win close games. The Eagles just didn’t do that enough.

• Speaking of splitting non-receivers out wide, tight end Trey Burton has gotten a lot of looks on the outside. He’s spent more time playing like a receiver than he has playing as a fullback. The Chiefs ran a number of three tight end sets in Kansas City so I wonder how involved Burton will be on offense.

Chip Kelly did some shuffling between 3 WR/1 TE and 2 WR/2 TE, but he wasn’t very creative with formations or personnel. Trey Burton felt like a player that should have gotten more time, especially considering how the WRs struggled last year. I remember Burton making a play against the Lions. Jimmy Bama had this to say after the play.

And that’s exactly what happened. Why not get the ball to that guy again? Doug Pederson will be more creative than Chip Kelly. I would guess he will do a better job of mixing and matching his personnel. Only time will tell if the results are better.

Here is an interesting note from Jeff McLane.

— Thursday’s practice was much shorter and less strenuous than the first two. There weren’t any team drills – just individual, installation and 7-on-7s. A number of players, including Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce, have noted that they feel fresher this spring than in the previous three springs under Chip Kelly. The tempo of Kelly’s practices made sure that the players were conditioned by the end of the spring, but they also might have been unnecessarily exhausting. There seemed to be more standing around during Doug Pederson’s practices, though. Whether that’s good or bad is unknown, but Kelly made sure he maximized his time. Toward the end of Wednesday’s indoor session, the Eagles ran 7-on-7 drills. Typically, both lines will work individually during 7-on-7s, but during this set, both groups just stood and watched. The cramped environs might have had something to do with the standing around, but there was still plenty of space for them to get their side work in.

I am curious to see what players think of practice under Pederson vs practice under Kelly. We need to see some Training Camp practices before we can really compare the two in-depth.

It is one thing to like or dislike a style of practice, but the more important question is which style is more effective? Which one is more conducive to good teaching and learning? Kelly had great success with his methods in college. His NFL results were more mixed. Pederson seemed to get solid results this spring, but a better test will be how the players look in Training Camp. Do the new methods bring out the best in them? How do they work with hitting and tackling? Do more physical practices bring out the best in the players?

*****

Jimmy Bama has been impressed by Chase Daniel.

• Chase Daniel continues to impress. There haven’t been many negatives to report on him, and we’ve already pointed out a number of the positives. Daniel doesn’t have much in the way of game tape to learn from, but if I were to compare Daniel in practice vs Mark Sanchez in practice, I would give a heavy edge to Daniel.

Today, Daniel hit Jordan Matthews for a TD a strong throw to the back of the end zone. It’s becoming clearer why the Eagles paid him the way they did. He has looked legitimately good.

I was thrilled when Sanchez was dealt to Denver. I had hopes that he would improve last year, but that didn’t happen. We just saw more of the same. Daniel doesn’t have the same amount of experience, but I’m fine with that. Daniel has played behind good QBs and for good coaches. He is smart. Daniel might have physical limitations, but he should be fine as a backup QB.

• I still don’t love what I’m seeing from Nelson Agholor. Today he caught a pass near the three-yard line and was able to stretch the ball across the goal line in quick motion. However, Jalen Mills was able to pop the ball out. I would say it was probably a completion and a TD, but you’d rather just see Agholor hold onto the football and leave no doubt.

Agholor has been up and down this spring. It feels like he might be pressing right now. The time off might be just what he needs. Sometimes a break can clear your head and get you back into a comfort zone. Agholor should focus on the next rep. Run a good route. Catch the ball when it comes your way. Forget about big plays and do the little things right. Then the big plays will come. A hitter in baseball doesn’t break out of a slump by trying to hit home runs. Work on your swing. Make good contact. The hits will come. The same principle applies to Agholor. Do the little things well. Everything else will follow.

*****

Here is a really interesting note from Tim McManus.

Mills is another corner who could play in nickel situations, with Pederson mentioning his name first when asked which rookie has impressed him outside of Carson Wentz. Jordan Matthews spoke highly of Mills, too, after minicamp wrapped up today.

“I like Jalen a lot,” Matthews said. “He’ll come up there and get up in my face whenever we’re working plays. If he wants to be physical, he’s going to be physical. He’s not going to back down. Even after some practices, he’ll pull me aside and say, ‘Hey, let’s get some extra releases.’ So you know that willingness to work is also there, too. I like him a lot. I think he’s definitely going to play a lot for us this year.”

I love hearing Matthews talk that way about Mills. Matthews was a 2nd round pick, but he’s also worked his tail off since coming to the NFL. He does everything he can to be a better player. Mills was a late pick, but he has legit talent. It is great to hear that Mills is working with Matthews. That doesn’t guarantee success for him, but it shows he is being smart about who to hang out with and who to work out with. Go spend time with the overachiever. Learn from that guy. He can teach you what to do on and off the field to be a better player.

Mills could be a steal. I generally really like LSU players. A 4-year starter that you’re getting late round – who practiced against OBJ, etc. i’ll take that.

I believe Mills is legit…. What I want to know is if JaCorey Shepard is as promising as The previous coaching staff thought?
    ..
Pederson named Leodis as the player who has most impressed so far… Boy would that be HUGE for this defense if we stumbled across a legit veteran starting Corner. More important, we NEED Leodis to stay healthy this year
    ..
I like all this new competition Rowe has to overcome on his way to NFL starter… What you gonna do about it yoûng man? STEP UP!

    I’m guessing for now is:
    CB1: Leodis – Mills
CB2: Carroll(when he fully recover from his injury) – Rowe
    Slot: Brooks – Shepherd

Watkins had his moments last year and is versatile, but CB is up to grabs for anyone.
If Rowe step up, we will get a really competitive secondary.

Sadly, Chip always chose tempo over making substitutions to take advantage of specific matchups in the red zone. Only way he’d usually sub into a different personnel grouping is if there was a stoppage of play for some other reason.

Since the season has ended it seems as though just about everyone is automatically assuming Agholor will start. While it is a strong possibility I don’t think it is guaranteed.

Agholor to me is more of a slot receiver with some outside WR skills. Unfortunately for him Pederson seems to have decided to keep Mathews in slot. Randle will 100% start on the outside this year, and he will be a huge upgrade over what was on the outside last year.

As unpopular as this may sound I do think there is a possibility that Givens could start on the outside over Agholor. He would provide a constant deep threat, and is currently more polished then Agholor. Then add his previous success and experience with Bradford.

Agholor does have a higher potential then Givens, but he is another regimes 1st round pick, seems to be playing out of position, and will not be guaranteed anything. Pederson will put forth the player that does the best for the team.

Again I know it is an unpopular opinion. I am not saying it will happen, but I do think there is a larger chance of that happening then many of us assume.

  13. 13 Rellihcs said at 6:48 AM on June 10th, 2016:

What about Agholor’s makes him not an outside WR to you? By all accounts he excels at creating separation and route running. He doesnt lack any of the physical traits. I just don’t see that.

  14. 14 Fufina said at 7:18 AM on June 10th, 2016:

I agree that he can be an outside receiver. I think the problem is that he lacks any truly elite traits, but is good at a lot of areas of his game. Think he is the kind of WR who with good QB play and a complex scheme can become a 1k+ yard weapon, but who will never be a top 15 WR in the league.

  15. 15 eagleyankfan said at 8:11 AM on June 10th, 2016:

if he can get 1000 yards — what’s your expectations of JM in the slot?

  16. 16 Fufina said at 10:49 AM on June 10th, 2016:

No i don’t think he will get that with the Eagles this year at all. Think he is the kind of WR if you put him on the Pats he gets 1100 yards as an outside WR but gets more like 700 with poorer QB play.

  17. 17 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:19 PM on June 10th, 2016:

Think 1000 is too much, too soon of an expectation, especially when 3 players could be targeted more than Nelson (ertz, jordan, sprolesy).
    .
Think 700 yard would be solid year two growth, I want to see him use his acceleration to produce at least 3 Big Play TDs, whether it’s turning the corner on a reverse, flick the burners on and take it to the house, getting behind the defense to catch a Bomb, or catch a short pass, make a defender or two miss, flash that impressive acceleration and get off to the Races.,,want to see 3 Big Play TDs, and 3 red zone TDs from nelly this year. He will still have a couple more seasons of growth after this year.
    ..
Sleeper Fantasy Beast….Darren Sproles, who plays for a coach who comes from the coaching tree of an Offense that has been masterful at using RBs in the passing game to compensate for a lack of elite WRs:
Brain Westbrook was a monster as a pass catching terror in a west coast offense and for years,he was able to compensate for a lack of WR talent.
    ..
Not a Coincidence Kansas City was able to do the same thing making Jamal Charles and Travis KELCE the focal points of their passing attack
    .
Chip kelly should be sued for Malpractice for how poorly he used Sproles in the passing game, I don’t know if there is an offensive player who should be more excited about the coaching/scheme Change than Sproles.. Pederson is going to move him all over The formation and put him in a brain Westbroom role… With as much as I expect Pederson/Bradford to lean on Sproles, Ertz and Jordan, I don’t think its time yet for Nelson to have a featured role expected to produce a 1000, but he doesn’t have to get 1000 to get his career back on track and get us excited about his future again
    .
Talented kid, decent size, high Charechter, smart, allegedly the work ethic is on point, I don’t see why he should fail. I’d like to see him develop into a smooth technician, but i think he has sneaky burst and acceleration to have enough of a playmaking element to his game
    .
Im still very much excited about his future in Philly. Hopefully he validates it with significant growth this yeàr

  18. 18 bsuperfi said at 11:40 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Let’s forget the Jerry Rice comparison for a second because it’s just not even close to an attainable goal. But there are some other models out there, like Reggie Wayne or even Maclin. Those guys are plus athletes without “elite” skills, but they’re smooth and combine their skills with the detail work to be technicians. That looks like the ceiling for Agholor to me.

  19. 19 Rellihcs said at 1:51 PM on June 10th, 2016:

The Jerry Rice mention was not about saying that Agholor is similar or will every be close to as good as that. Come on man. The point is that people are labeling Agholor a “dropper” and some dopes even going toward “bust” but we are talking about a player who was injured, on a bad o, with a bad o line, on a dysfunctional team his rookie year. And the Jerry Rice piece (admitted stickem user and notorious for chronic drop issues early in his career) far over came that crap. But there seems to be some magical/nonsensical idea that Agholor will never shake the dropsies….

  20. 20 Will:Howie is Nino Brown said at 12:27 PM on June 10th, 2016:

I think his stop and go and overall acceleration are underrated. I think he needs just to hold onto the ball and he will be fine.

  21. 21 Buge Halls said at 10:23 AM on June 10th, 2016:

He lacks a HUGE physical trait – the ability to reliably catch and hold onto the ball!

  22. 22 Rellihcs said at 10:25 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Which is similar to the beginning of the NFL career for a guy named Jerry Rice.

That doesn’t make him “more of a slot WR” who’s playing out of position.

It does mean he needs to improve on some of the fundamentals/confidence/not pushing too hard to make big plays which causes him to screw up fundamentals. Given time and work with Glew – he’ll get much better in that area.

  23. 23 Buge Halls said at 10:28 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Which is also similar to the end of the career to one Riley Cooper. I mean as long as we’re making meaningless comparisons.

  24. 24 ChoTime said at 4:10 PM on June 10th, 2016:

    Nelson Agholor: 283 yrds, 12.3 y/c, 1 TD
    Jerry Rice: 927 yrds, 18.9 y/c, 3 TD
You really need to come up with a better comparison. This one has no credibility.

  25. 25 Rellihcs said at 4:14 PM on June 10th, 2016:

So you didn’t read the link I posted? Both had a rookie year that was plagued by a high number of drops, and at inopportune times. Those are facts. “Buge Halls” referred to NA’s dropping issues. So it’s only 100% RELEVANT.

  29. 29 Rellihcs said at 4:26 PM on June 10th, 2016:

Fine you got me on comparison – I was pointing out 1 thing they had in common. A similarity. We are arguing semantics.

HOWEVER – the fact remains that both WRs struggled significantly with drops their rookie year – so much so that Walsh had to defend Rice as not being a bust. That’s a fact.

And it’s 100% relevant to Buge Hall’s statement about Agholor.

  30. 30 Rellihcs said at 4:37 PM on June 10th, 2016:

Google Jerry rice rookie bust. 100% relevant. Not awful. Not terrible. A similarity. Not a comparison. Have a nice day.

  31. 31 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:25 PM on June 11th, 2016:

Yeah the same tired, lame jerry rice comparison is such a waste of time… I actually have a lot of confidence in Agholar growing to be a quality outside WR who can bring stability to that position for us past his rookie contract… But I don’t need some absurd worthless Jerry Rice comparison to reach that conclusion

  32. 32 wee2424 said at 10:23 PM on June 10th, 2016:

I do not have links but there are some very good articles out there concerning this subject. Look them up. There are many NFL scouts that believe the same thing.

He is not good against a jam. He seems much better and more natural running underneath routes.

  33. 33 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:34 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Respectfully I disagree, Agholar belongs on the outside, even if he hasn’t become the player we hoped overnight. He absolutely needs to show significant growth this year. No excuses after last year… But it’s still only yeàr two for Nelson, no matter how good he looks this year he is still going to grow and Improve after year two. Nice quickness, acceleration, smart Humble yoûng man with a work ethic we can trust, decent size…. Think this is a hungry intelligent kid who will grow into a technician on the outside, but he still has a few years of work to get to that level. Hopefully he is in the hands of the right coaches, thanfully we only wasted one year of his developmemt with that chump Bicknell
    ..
Think we have to remember that the WRs have a Huge transition to deal with from chips offense, the basic, limited routes our WRs were asked to run, to the complete route tree and the intracacies that the west coast offense asks of WR’s… A WR isn’t going to be able to put his best foot forward until the offense becomes second nature to him… hopefully still having to think too much right now is a big reason for why he isn’t expressing media observers… While the Coaches can’t give players a free pass in training, Coaches have to coach them hard during OTAs and hold them to high standards, it may prove to be a little misleading to make our Judgements two months after players were introduced to the new playbook, after all, OTA is a time for learning, ESPECIALLY for a team incorporating a new offense.. While Id much rather hear that Agholar is impressing every Single day, Im trying to reserve judgment until camp/Preseason.. This is supposed to be the time where players train to put themselves in the best position to put their foot forward in Training camp when the battle for roster spots, depth chart really begins….. Everyone learns at a different rate. Hopefully training camp will tell a different story

  34. 34 wee2424 said at 10:21 PM on June 10th, 2016:

I can’t agree with him being meant for the outside. His strength and weakness’s and his game play from last year really make me think he could be a far better slot receiver. There are some really intelligent articles out there supporting the theory of him being best in the slot. Check them out when you have the opportunity. I do not have links.

  35. 35 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:22 PM on June 11th, 2016:

Will do… I just don’t see why he can’t grow to have similar success as Maclin enjoys on the outside… Curious to see what level of WR he grows into 3 years from now.

  36. 36 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:52 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Givens and Randle ARENT “slouches” so it wouldn’t shock me at all if they leap frog a young WR into the starting lineup. I don’t know that I would make either the favorite to win the starting Job, but they aren’t “Miles Austin” type slouches.. Both Randle and Givens should end up playing a role for us on sundays, how big of a role will be determined in August. But they are certainly legit NFL players that Agholar and Huff should be taking very serious as competition that is threat to their playing time.
    ..
I really want to get excited about randle, and go all in with you labeling him a “steal”, but the Ghosts of steve smith and Miles Austin past keep me from really getting excited about adding Randle…. And that’s not fair to Randle, but im jaded by past failures trying to poach WR from Rivals… I will say Randle is coming off a beter yeàr than steve smith and Austin were coming off when we signed them. Hopefully Randle will be different. I do LOVE the fact that he came to us having spent the last two years starting in a Bob McAdoo west coast offense. That should be a big advantage for Randle. And it’s likethe next best thing from signing a WR who spent the last few years in Kansas City with Pederson.
    .
The guy produced 8 TDs in 16 games last year and did it behind an OL I have zero respect for. Also managed to produce some big plays down field… Heck, give me a TD every other game and I don’t care what else he does
    ..
Givens won’t ever be confused with a gamebreaker but he brings speed and deep threat that we clearly lacked and it doesn’t suck that he has history of connecting with our QB for some big plays down field early in his career, and Bradford and Givens hooked up for those big plays at a time when they played with a crap OL, and a serious lack of weapons… We don’t have big name weapons, but with guys like Ertz, Jordan, Sproles, we know that defenses won’t be keying in on Chris Givens, that’s for sure. Hopefully the presence of weapons like sProles who still command attention from defenses will open up some opportunities for Givens to get behind the defense. Sproles threatening a defense underneath, Ertz threatening the defense in the middle, could provide some daylight for givens to do what he does best, beat his man deep
    ..
It would be BIGTIME if either Randle or Givens prove to be good enough to stick around as Eagles for the next 3 years…. Thinking a guy who likes to go deep like Givens can be valuable once we turn the reigns over to the Ginger Gunslinger with an itchy trigger finger to throw deep

  37. 37 wee2424 said at 10:17 PM on June 10th, 2016:

I think its unfair to Randle to have his name remind you of Austin and Smith. Both of those players came to us from far worse positions in their respective careers. Randle is also just simply more talented then either of them. With that said I do get the point of what you are saying.

Lets see how this sexual assault thing pans out with Agholor. Something tells me the girls story is way over exaggerated or she is just gold digging. Either way it is not a good thing for a player that really needs to keep his mind cool, collected, and focused.

  38. 38 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:21 PM on June 11th, 2016:

You are right….big difference between Randle and the other two failed signings….it’s not always a disaster when teams poach players from their rivals… Desean has pretty much given the skins about what they expected to get out of him…. Hopefully Randle will be a success story. Who knows, maybe we even get lucky and a change of scenery does him some good?
    ..
I don’t believe Agholar raped or sexually assaulted anyone. And my understanding is that No ONE working in cheerleaders believes it either. Nelson broke a law paying for sex, but the kid Probably doesn’t deserve this false accusation of a heinous crime.
    ..
I assume this “case” will be resolved in the next 7 days, and Agholar won’t be arrested or charged with anything… Heck, I think it’s more likely that the woman gets arrested than Agholar getting arrested

    • I still don’t love what I’m seeing from Nelson Agholor.

—- that’s a shock to me. The example given to support that was crap but there must be something there to make him make that comment. I liked reading “chip on his shoulder” but that’s different than “pressing”… very few(exciting) story lines this year but WR is one of them. Everything always looks fine on paper and in spring….can’t wait to the real stuff happens.

Jeff McLane: Agholar isn’t looking “special”

  44. 44 Fufina said at 11:08 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Well he is not a ‘special’ player in my opinion. Agholor will not out jump, out length, out run or really out cut NFL CB’s since he does not have elite traits in any of those single areas – rather he needs to combine them with good route running to produces moments of separation, and then have a QB who will get him the ball arriving in those moments.

Bradford will not do it – because he is captain cautious, and needs to see the player open, and feel sure he will remain open before making the throw. Gunslinger Wentz will probably be able to get a lot more out of him in time, but i think Agholor will probably struggle to be the WR we hoped as a first round pick.

  45. 45 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:03 PM on June 10th, 2016:

Maybe, we shall see… Personally, I try to be cautious when talking about what a talented second year player can’t do. Nelson had a terrible rookie year, so he is being placed under the microscope and he is going to be held to really high standards this year and we want to see more glimpses of The talent and ability that made him a first round pick, and I think it’s fair expect him to take a major step forward, but I think its imporant to remember that he still has a few more years of growing and improving after this season.
    .,
I look at a guy like Marcus Smith that has been trashed for two years and completely Written off by a large portion of the FANBASE, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit for him to have a season that makes fans rethink that “bust label” they were so quick to put on him.
    ..
Not every “Special” player tore up the NFL in his first season. it doesn’t mean that every young player who doesn’t prove to be successful right away in yeàr one or yeàr two proved that he is never going to grow to validate his high draft pick. Like all facets of life, humans grow at different rates, some faster than others…, it be great if we could know exactly what We have a year or two after we draft a player but that is rarely the case. the real measure is the type of growth rate a kid shows over the course of his first 3, 4 years… “Free agency is for this year, the draft is for the future”
    ..
We all try to evaluate, judge, project what we have in our draft picks after a year or two, but I think what’s really improtant is that a draft pick grows into a player who earns a second contract from the team that drafts him, and there is no reason to already conclude that he won’t be good enough to earn that extension. I wouldn’t bet on him becoming a top 10 WR, but I wouldn’t bet against him being a quality starting outside WR who can hold down that spot for us past his rookie contract, think there is so much more to his game than what we have seen so far in his young career
    ,.
There are so many great players who fans would have said, there is nothing special about their game after their rookie season. Not all Greatness is obvious from day 1 like a Randy Moss.
    .,
It happens in every sport for various reasons, injuries, opportunity, some just need more time to develop than others.
    ..
3 years into brandon Graham’s career, NO ONE would have bet on him being the player he has become who earned a second contract and has been a solid starter for years now. You these type of stories in every sport.
    ,,
After his rookie season, you would have never said that there is something “special” about Jimmy Butler and his 2pts per game average, he was closer to not having a job in The NBA than he was to becoming a great player. Even crazier is the fact that he didn’t come to the NBA as some 19yr old, one and done freshman… He was pretty old for a rookie and still didn’t show any signs of being special, heck he didn’t even show glimpses of becoming a starter łet alone an all star…
    ..
Personally, even after his dissapointing rookie season, I would have made Nelson one of the first WR drafted in this years class. I don’t regret is drafting him in round 1. I don’t view him as a kid who shouldn’t have been drafted in round 2 or 3.. I still have faith in him figuring it out, Hopefully shows it This year, the sooner the better in this city. I appreciate Roseman adding enough Talent at WR to where Agholar probably won’t automatically be gifted a starting spot and extensive Playing time if he doesn’t earn It and seem worthy of it,… Think we would have been doing a diservice to him if we had a bunch of Miles Austin type bums to where nelson would have to play whether he earned it or not…. Randle n Givens ARENT world beaters, but they are legit NFL WRs in their primes who should be at least good enough to make Nelson earn what he gets

But his talent is not the biggest Nelson story atm

Exactly, his chance of being a pro-bowler will be based on him doing all the little things right. Totally different scenario than a phenomenally-talented–“special”–player.

People need to stop with the Agholor-Maclin comparisons. Check out a Maclin scouting report:

“If a team is looking for an explosive deep threat, Maclin is about as good of a bet as there is in this draft. He uses his speed and quickness to beat jams at the line and create separation. Can take it to the end zone on any possession. Incredible vision when he as the ball in his hands. Elusive and slippery. Maclin can stop and start to shake defenders and juke around them in the open field.”

I remember Huff getting yanked several times after making big plays as well. That really irked me, especially for a guy who seemed to struggle. Maybe it would have been a good idea to see if he could get into a rhythm.

  49. 49 BobSmith77 said at 10:56 AM on June 10th, 2016:

Huff strikes me as one of those guys who works hard but just really struggles to grasp the playbook & game situations including running routes in zone and being in the correct place at the correct time.

Agholor deserves a pass largely last year even if he was generally terrible. He was injured, a rookie, and played on a dysfunctional team. Huff couldn’t even displace Cooper and Austin for PT on a team desperate for WR production.

Maybe Pederson salvages something out of him and gets some semi-production but with all of the guys the Eagles signed this offseason I think they just largely regard Huff as largely a bust at this point.

I was out of town this week but woke up this morning to see some of this praise for Daniel.

It just struck me as classic minicamp posturing especially for a new player on the team. Sanchez was terrible here in limited time and Daniel doesn’t have a high bar to exceed that.

My sense is that Daniel probably wouldn’t make as many of the ill-advised decisions Sanchez made (especially throwing into double-coverage) but that this offense would be bad to terrible with him at the helm. Not Pat Ryan/Brad Goebel bad but one of the weaker offensive units we have seen since the days of Mike McMahon was at the helm for an extended stretch.

I don’t buy for a second either this team will leave Wentz sit for the entire season/almost the entire season either if Bradford goes down early with a serious injury & they start losing game after game with Daniel.

Everything they have said since Pederson was hired (including Lurie) was that they weren’t going to endure a 3-13/4-12 season this year.

  54. 54 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:59 AM on June 10th, 2016:

I do value him, but strictly as an extra QB coach for Sam and Carson.

    ..
Also gotta tip my hat to how Pederson has Navigated the offseason Drama so far. Seems to have really impressed Bradford who has been raving about how Pederson is a first class guy, and How he is impressed and appreciative of how he handled Sam’s temper tantrum, and bradford sounds genuine when he talks about how it made his relationship with Pederson closer and stronger…. So far, Dougie doing a solid job in the “emotional intelligence” area.,
    ..
Be fun to be able to look into an alternate Universe and see how different this offseason would have played out If Chip was still in Charge. FREIGHTENING to think about how Chip would have handled the Fletcher Cox contract demands.. This isn’t even something to joke about, God forbid chip was still the GM when Cox decided to make a power play.. Who knows what offseason moves he would have made as a GM this year, especially after how he started,to lose control of the locker room late last season.
    .
For a first time head coach, have to admit Pederson has been a stud handling the drama that comes with an offseason in Philadelphia. If his on field coaching and preperation is as good, we will be in good hands. Hopefully he is ready for it

“This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor has been accused of raping a dancer at Cheerleaders Gentlemen’s Club, law enforcement sources have told Philadelphia magazine.

A 27-year-old dancer told police that she was raped inside the club, which is located on Front Street near Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia, about 3 p.m. on Thursday.

At least two other Eagles visited Cheerleaders with Agholor, the sources said. The club is just a few minutes away from the team’s NovaCare complex, where they wrapped up their last spring practice early Thursday afternoon.

“There was an allegation made against one of the [Eagles] players of a sexual assault that was reported by one of the female dancers,” said Police Commissioner Richard Ross. “Our Special Victims Unit is actively running on the investigation.”

Ross said detectives are trying to track down video footage from the club. Ross said the Police Department has been in contact with Eagles officials. Agholor is expected to be interviewed by investigators some time soon. He has not been charged with any crime.

“We are aware of the police investigation involving Nelson Agholor,” said Derek Boyko, a spokesman for the Eagles. “The organization has been in contact with Nelson and with the proper authorities in Philadelphia. Because of the legal nature of this matter, we will have no further comment.”

Agholor’s agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment. John Meehan, the owner of Cheerleaders, said he wasn’t at the club on Thursday. Neither he nor the club’s attorney, Marc Raspanti, said they were aware of the allegations.

Agholor, 23, was born in Nigeria, and moved to the U.S. when he was 5 years old. He was drafted 20th overall by the Eagles in 2015.

Additional reporting by Jared Brey, Tim McManus and Dan McQuade.”

Any word on if they have video cameras in the private dance rooms which I assume is where an eagle would be? Probably safe to assume this incident DIDNT happen in the main dance room/Bar section..
    ..
What’s the best case scenario for the Eagles? Someone trying to extort nelson? We can Imagine how terrible the worst case scenarios will be if this is true.
    .
What a nightmare situation…. No matter what happens, after this moment, some damage has already been done, either to a young woman who will be traumatized, or to a young man who’s reputation will be tarnished to some extent no matter how this situation unfolds.
    ..
We deal with a lot of Drama in this city, much of which is fabricated or instigated by the media…. That “drama” pales in comparison to a situation like this. Just horrible. Forget football, I really hope this isn’t true. I really hope that yoûng man WASNT capable of raping someone..

Just like I have no friggin idea if Nelson is a great wholesome young man or juat someone who is very good at pretending to be.
    .
I have no judgement on this either way, I literally don’t know what to think, other than I hope that This isn’t true, but even that outcome would be pretty shitty for a young man to be falsely accused of this, so even the lessor Evil will still be a terrible situation

Under no circumstances do I want to see Eagles in the image of Cowboys, Bengals, known for making exceptions and going around the legal system. This is somewhat alarming, and no time for ambiguity.

  88. 88 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:58 PM on June 10th, 2016:

HOPEFULLY there was a video camera in the back where the private Dances occur so we can get a clear and accurate idea of exactly what happened. This is SO SERIOUS that I have to give the kid the benefit of the doubt right now, but this is something so serious that if he did what he is accused of doing, then I have no sympathy for him and I hope he is punished accordingly…
    ..
But I sure hope this isn’t true and I really hope there is video evidence of whatever happened..
    ..
But I have a Terrible feeling about this because whether he is being falsely or accurate accused, the woman making this accusation would Know if there are cameras filming that area or not…. So odds are a dancer WOULDNT falsely accuse someone of assualtimg her in an area she knows was being video taped and would prove that she is lying, So even if Nelson did NOT do this, odds are there won’t be video to collaborate him because a dancer WOULDNT falsely accuse him of assaulting her in an area that is being videotaped.
    .
So either there is video of nelson assualting this woman, or there is NO VIDEO to show that he did or didn’t assulat this woman…. But UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO CHANCE that there is a video that will show Nelson is innocent,.,, the accuser would have to be pretty unbelievably stupid to falsely accuse him of doing something in a room THATS being video taped…., so it’s probably unlikely that there will be a quick, positive resolution to this story

Re: Agholor and the “Hidden Video” Question

Someone speculated that a strip club — where sex-for-pay takes place in a back room — might secretly record the customer and his gal having sex.
    _________________

Let’s count the number of criminal acts involved in that *hopeful* scenario:

    1. Illegal wiretapping (by the club and/or “dancer”), in violation Pennsylvania law — unless the customer consents to being recorded having sex . . . and thereby setting himself up for a lifetime of extortion payments or internet embarrassment.

    2. Prostitution (by the “dancer”).

    3. Facilitation of illegal activities, i.e., prostitution (by the club).

    4. Solicitation of sex for money, i.e., prostitution (by the customer).

    5. Racketeering in violation of federal law (the club and individuals who run it).

    6. Mann Act violations, if the “dancers” are imported from another state (by the club and suppliers).
    _______________

Is there a video of who enters the club? Sure.

Entering what the public area of a business gives implied consent to videotaping — since the customer has little expectation of privacy as to their presence at the club.

But is there a *hidden* camera catching the sex?

That would be quite a story.

This whole situation is best summed up by – “I’m shocked, shocked to find that prostitution is going on in here!”

It is kind of a running joke that you can get service (including full service) in Philly strip clubs in private rooms. Agholor isn’t paying $1400 for a lap dance. That is full service pricing.

I bet he did the deed, finished up earlier than the hour or half hour rate, and only paid her $800 instead as a result. She got really pissed after the fact, decided to claim he assaulted (raped) her, and things spiraled down hill from there.

The much larger issue though here is the mind-numblingly stupid policy we have towards this issue (e.g., prostitution). There are very valid points for and against full legislation but the current policy is just an antiquated and hopelessly ineffective joke that poorly serves and treats those directly involved as well as wasting police and local court resources. I’d bet in most major U.S. cities, you can now get an escort/prostitute faster than you can hotel room service or a pizza.

Doesn’t surprise me in the least. One of my good friend’s at undergrad was from the Detroit are and her dad was the traveling secretary (club house manager) for the Detroit Tigers. He was responsible for handling all of the travel logistics and more importantly player-related issues.

He never disclosed any specifics about any players but that hardest part of his job by far was dealing with the players who had a wife, mistress(es), and women they would sleep with in certain cities on the road.

At dinner one night, he used the old Ghostbusters’ analogy about ‘never crossing the streams’ and how it would be very, very bad. Well that was what he dealt on a regular basis including keeping all of these women separate from one another while trying his best to keep the player happy. Also had to deal with random crazy groupies who were really into a famous/rich players too or if the player slept with a random women or escort.

At the end of the season, players are expected to tip a lot of internal staff and folks. He never went into that but his daughter told me once that depending upon how many insanity/nonsense a particular player subjected him to during the regular season was somewhat commensurate with how they were expected to tip. Some of these tips were huge. Talking meaningful 5 figures for a single wealthy player who subjected him to a lot during the regular season and this was in the late 90s/early 00s. One player gave him a fully-loaded, high end SUV he had got from a local dealership that became her car in high school.

It seems kind of crazy until you realize this individual knows (if their good at their job) a lot of a player’s secrets and things they never want seeing the light of day. They also expected him to be take care of an awful lot of messy and difficult stuff too.

Last story – a friend of my said they brought Jordan Matthews over to talk to their men’s group at a synagogue (Philly area) to talk about ‘temptation’ and he surprisingly agreed since the guys who asked Matthews had a close relationship with him.

My friend said it was one of the most unintentionally hilarious conversations ever including how Matthews tried to illustrate some of the temptations he faced. One of his prime antidotes he used was how one night when he got back into his hotel room from a road game and there was just this butt naked, drop dead gorgeous woman standing in his room when he opened the door.

At first, Matthews thought the woman was a crazy groupie who somehow had gotten her way into his room. She explained how she had gotten in (it was pre-arranged) but Matthews said that he told her to get dressed instead & to leave since he was nursing a slight injury.

This is the story that Matthews decided to use to describe how he resisted temptation to a room of various middle-aged and older Jewish men. He said it took every iota of willpower he had to not just start hilariously laughing at several times and he wasn’t alone supposedly.

    ..
The Alhambra high school basketball tournament is one of the most prestigious post season high school basketball tournament for Nationally ranked teams. The tournament takes place in Cumberland Maryland and Roman Catholic has a rich history of doing well at that tournament and that’s where we would encounter other national powerhouses like St Patrick’s, Mt Zion, Gonzaga prep, hated Rival DeMatha… The tournament is after the catholic league playoffs and state championships.. I remeber the first time I played there was at the end of our sophmore season, Eddie was already a Highschool Basketball God, we get there (Cumberland Maryland) on a wednesday (thru sunday).. The first night we are there, the Host school sets up a banquet for all the teams, and later they set up a “Dance/Mixer” for all the players (No coaches) and the adults who run the tournament provided like 5 groups of cheerleaders from 5 of the Local high schools, essentially providing high school players with woman which is kind of creepy now that you look back on it, the insane level of groupies Griffin was already dealing with as a high school kid was insane.
    ..
What’s really creepy looking back is you have adults working for highschools. Athletic directors, executives from sponsors like Adidas and Reebok running this prestigious yearly event, and they were essentially providing us Cheerleaders from Local schools who’s basketball teams weren’t even participating in the tournament WTF? Half of our team practically lost its virginity that week thanks to the attention EDDIE got…. And it was always like this no matter where we traveled (played a nationally ranked schedule in showcase games everywhere from DC, Mertyl Beach, Honalulu Hawaii, Chicago), and the groupie culture was already mind blowing in high school, Must be exponentially more NSANE at the Professional level
    .,
But these kids need to grow up FAST! They are targets. Nelson should know better by now, im sure he dealt with this type of dynamic while he was a star at USC. There is nothing wrong with a kid going to a strip club, but he has to know better than to put himself in this type of compromising position. He just has too much to lose, it’s not worth it… Few minutes of sex with a gorgeous woman is NOT worth the risk associated with it….
    ..
Dissapointed that such a smart young man, who always comes off like a good kid could risk his life puttimg himself in a position like this. He has to know better, he has too much to lose. 15 minutes with a gorgeous woman just isn’t worth the various different potential risks that come with it
    ..
And not for nothing, but if he is going to pay for sex, do so when the woman just thinks you are a horny kid with a couple dollars, DO NOT BE PAYING FOR SEX in an Environment where everyone Knows you are a pro athlete, which means, Probably a bad idea trying to pay for sex 10 blocks from Novacare when you are in public with Fletcher Cox and Connar BARWIN, two of the most famous people in Philadelphia

They should not be ripped because they went to a strip club, especially during the day.. My understanding is its not like they were there for hours, late into the night while they were all completely intoxicated.

But Nelson made a really stupid decision to pay a stripper for sex, and even dumber is his decision to pay her less than the agreed upon price…. Saving 600$’because it lasted less than a half hour, instead of the agreed upon hour is very stupid and short sited on Nelson’s part…. That 600 he saved was NOT worth this news being made public, and it damn sure wasn’t worth having to deal with a Rape accusation…..should have just given her the agreed upon 1400 even if it didn’t last even close to the full hour agreed upon
    .
Sounds like Nelson was stupid, not a criminal…. But stupidity doesn’t deserve having to deal with false raoe accusations in this day and age if he is indeed Innocent….. Im sure This will serve as a serious learning experience for Nelson….
    ..
But you are right, it’s ridiculuos to act like they did anything wrong just by deciding to go to Cheerleaders…

My only thoughts on the Agholor case are that it needs to be resolved one way or the other by the start of camp.

Either he didn’t commit a rape and is full exonerated or he gets charged with committing a rape and he gets put in Goodell’s paid suspension box until the charges are cleared up one way or another

BUT THIS HAD BETTER BE CLEARED UP EITHER FUCKING WAY BY CAMP. I’m not dealing with further questions in the WR group.

I hear that This will be resolved Quickily and it’s unlikely Agholar will be charged with anything
    ..
Hearing that Nelson was just Stupid, not a criminal… Hopefully this is legit and he really DIDNT assualt that woman
    ..
“I did NOT Inhale! Oops wrong excuse, I mean, I did NOT have sexual relations with that woman! Lol

It seems like it is going to be cleared up in a few days. Even her co-workers are reportedly calling BS.

  180. 180 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:47 AM on June 11th, 2016:

Like ALL OF HER CO WORKERS are calling BS… And when the media starts to find out info about this young lady, she ISNT going to make a very good impression on the public, I’ll put it like that…. Im talkimg heavy known drug use and an unfavorable rap sheet
    .
She wants peiple to believe that she was raped, while the two bouncers overseeing the private dance area DIDNT notice anything wrong. She didn’t tell the bouncers afterwards, she didn’t say anything about rape to the co workers like the bar tender and other “dancers”
    ..
Sounds like after she left later on, someone gave her some bad advice that she didn’t think thru well enough, and she went to the police and made this false accusation,
    ,,
curious to find out if she did this on her own, or if some guy or woman friend got in her ear about it and gave her some bad advice concocting this accusation that doesnt sound like it’s going to stick
    .
At this point, I’ll be pretty surprised if Nelson even gets arrested

  187. 187 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:25 AM on June 11th, 2016:

For whatever it’s worth, I Talked to someone who works at cheerleaders, and I hear the accuser doesn’t have much support from her co-workers, no one believes her side of the story and that they would be surprised if Agholar even ends up being charged for this crime…
    ..
The story goes that Agholar agreed to pay $1400 for an Hour, but he “finished” Rather Quickily, not even close to an hour, so he decided that $800 was a fair price for less than half the hour of “work” they agreed upon.
    ..
There are only cameras in the bar and parking lot area, but there was Bouncers overseeing the private champagne room area and the bouncers weren’t aware that Nelson did anything wrong, since sex for Money is not uncommon in that establishment
    ..
The moral of the story is that if an athlete is going to do dirt like this and put himself in this type of compromising situation, Do NOT BE CHEAP ABOUT IT…, $600 is so not worth THIS DRAMA
    ..
apparently it’s unlikely that he will be charged with this accusation.
    ..
Hopefully this info is legit and it plays out accordingly

  188. 188 Jernst said at 11:45 AM on June 11th, 2016:

Stupid…that’s what ended up busting those secret service agents in Colombia too. You shouldn’t be soliciting sex anyways but come on, if you’re going to be in such a compromising situation pay up.

  189. 189 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:49 AM on June 11th, 2016:

Exactly… If you are going to do dirt, keep the woman happy, and do not do anything that could piss her off and put “revenge” on her mind..
    ..
Like Kobe said when he snitched publically like a clown “Should have just paid the woman like Shaq always does”…lol
    ..
A first round pick trying to save $600? So not worth it
    ..
And not for nothing, don’t pay for sex when everyone knows you are an Eagle, and you are at a club with two of the most famous people in Philly, Cox and BARWIN.. Wait to pay for sex when a woman thinks you are just some horny kid with a few dollars

  190. 190 Jernst said at 10:03 AM on June 12th, 2016:

yea…that…or just don’t pay for sex at cheerleaders at 3pm on a thursday at all…that’s a fairly decent plan too, haha

  191. 191 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:51 PM on June 12th, 2016:

Yeah I’d recommend your plan over mine for sure

  192. 192 Bert's Bells said at 6:58 PM on June 11th, 2016:

    Fuck that guy.

  193. 193 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:10 PM on June 11th, 2016:

Lol if you are going to accuse an eagle an eagle of such a heinous crime, maybe you should do your homework and not pick one of the biggest choir boys on the team to falsely accuse..
    ..
Hope This serves as a learning lesson and a wake up call for the rest of the Eagles and pro players in philly…. Nelson is lucky that he has such a good reputation because a good portion of fans/media are giving him the Benefit of the doubt…. I Imagine it could be much worse if a player with some red flags like Jalen Mills was accused of this. Mills Probably wouldn’t get anywhere as much of the benefit of the doubt Agholar is fortunate to be getting., young athletes in This city better take this serious and use it as a learning experience… You don’t have to do anything wrong to find yourself in a situation where you are being accused of an extremely serious crime. These kids have so much to Lose, hopefully this is a wake up call, and a big learning experience for the rookies new to philly. And the young players in general
    ..
Nelson Agholar is one of the last players on this team you would ever expect to be associated with a rape case, yet THATS the exact position he finds himself in… not doing anything wrong ismt always enough. You have more to lose than the average person, so you should learn to be more cautious and take less chances than the average man…
    .
For the first time in years, the Eagles too, a chance Drafting players that came with some baggage and red flags..hopefully this is a big learning experience for a promising kid like Mills and they realize that not breaking the law isn’t enough, you also have to keep yourself out of situations that can be potentially dangerous… Even if Agholar isn’t arrested or charged with anything, this is an expensive price he has to pay in terms of his reputation

Funny thing is, can’t be a choir boy if you’re paying for sex from strippers. Guess he doesn’t practice what he preaches.

  195. 195 Jernst said at 10:01 AM on June 12th, 2016:

Hell, $800 for 20 minutes…it sounds more like she raped him

  196. 196 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:51 PM on June 12th, 2016:

I blame nelson for not making the negotiation more clear. He seems to Think it was a strictly pay by hour sort of deal, in which case giving her 800 was more than fair for a fraction of the agreed upon time limit..
    .
But the entrepreneurial yoûng lady was under the impression that she was paid to complete a “job”and the 1 hour timefram was just a worst case scenario time limit..
    .
I kind of agree with the young lady, because once Nelson “Finished” what are the chances he actually wanted to still be bothered with the remaining 40 minutes of service? Highly unlikely lol! So the young lady shouldnt have been financial penalized for Nelson being “quick draw McGraw”
    ..
judges ruling: Yoûng Lady is owed the entire $1400, nelson Should have to pay her the remaining $600, but with the false rape accusation and all, we can consider them even, put this to rest, and let Nelson get back to training for Camp….
    ..
This ruling is not subject to an appeal… Get nelson back on a field ASAP and hopefully he can start catching the ball as well as he caught a case

The big problem with the whole narrative of him being high character is all high character means in football is “workaholic perfectionist who hadn’t been arrested”. Doesn’t mean they have any meaningful insights beyond “seems like a nice kid”.

  198. 198 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:36 PM on June 12th, 2016:

Pro athlete in a strip club…… Tale as old as time,..
    ..
I guess I’ll take a false rape allegation over a serious Injury in OTAs? If this case goes no where and is Quickily resolved, I’ll consider it a fair Sacrafice to the football gods for an injury less OTA’s…. I’ll Sacrafice a cow for a healthy training camp lol
    .
This is better than his fellow WR draftmate Brashad Perriman tearing his ACL missing the second season in the row, basically becoming the NFL version of Joel EMBIID
    ..
It’s all relative lol,.silverling soft of thing… Our pro athletes can feel free to pay for all the sex they want, just stay out of jail and stay out of the news please, and avoid heinous allegations like Rape while they are at it…. Whether Agholar pays a stripper for sex, or pays to take a nurse out for dinner for sex is not my business
