Other Than That

You know the old joke “Other than that, what did you think of the play Mrs. Lincoln?”? Feels like the Eagles are going through a rough patch where that joke applies. It sure seems like RT Lane Johnson is going to be suspended for 10 games. That would be rough with a good OL situation, but the Eagles backups were a mess on Thursday night. Today we found out Carson Wentz has a broken rib and will miss at least the next couple of games. The receivers, who struggled so much in the game, had a severe case of the drops today at practice.

Other than that…

Life isn’t that bad for the Eagles right now, it just feels that way. Wentz was not going to play much this year so missing practices and a couple of preseason games won’t have a major impact on the season. It does hurt Wentz in the sense that he needs all the work this summer that he can get because he won’t get that much during the season.

Some are debating whether Wentz should have even been on the field when he did get hurt (next to last play for him). The O-line was struggling in a major way so leaving him out there meant Doug Pederson was taking a chance with a valuable asset. It is absolutely fair to question the wisdom of that move. At the same time, preseason snaps can be invaluable for someone like Wentz. Practice is important, but actual game reps are critical. Hitting is live and that makes a difference for offensive players, since practices have limited contact. The speed of the game also goes up a notch when you face an actual opponent and not your own defense. The best education for Wentz is lots of game time. Ironically, getting him extra snaps on Thursday will cost him a couple of games.

Everyone now expects Johnson to get suspended. Ugh. It sounds like he made a real effort to find out if his supplement would get him in any trouble, but he obviously didn’t get the right answers from the right people. It seems utterly ridiculous to me that the NFL can’t do a better job in this area. They need to put out a definitive list of what is approved. Any player who strays from that is then at his own risk.

I am not a huge fan of moving Barbre to RT and then trying to find a LG. Barbre wasn’t exactly great at RT in the summer of 2014 and then was sloppy in the opener until he got hurt. And Seumalo was less than great in the opener. I would have liked the coaches to leave Barbre at LG and given Dennis Kelly a few practices with the 1’s at RT. Kelly didn’t play well in the opener, but he has some experience there. I also believe in the value of stability and continuity. With a look of Peter-Seumalo-Kelce-Brooks-Barbre, you only have returning starters at two spots. That is less than ideal.

No matter how you slice it, the Eagles need one or more linemen to step up. That could be Barbre, Seumalo, Kelly or several other guys. The teams needs players to win jobs, not just look less awful than the other options.

Could there be outside help?

Beatty missed all of last year due to injuries, but has 63 career starts, most at LT. He would be a solid veteran addition to the OL group. We’ll see if anything comes of this.

The Eagles are good at LT, C and RG. They have a few weeks left to sort out LG and RT.

He’s hurt because the backup OL were a mess. Excellent that those two sentences followed each other!

If Barner had scored earlier in the drive, Wentz never takes that hit. I am pretty sure you can pin this injury squarely on Barner.

I could also ask the sun to not emit UV radiation; not happening. Barner couldn’t produce a meaningful score in a brothel with a roll of $20s in his hand.

I’m still of the opinion that if Bradford went on the IR, that they’d sign a vet to back up Daniel before they’d let Wentz start this year. I’m just bummed that he’ll be pissing all of those reps in pre-season games.

  11. 11 Charlie Kelly said at 9:06 PM on August 13th, 2016:

i dont think theyd sign a vet at all, that would be a terrible look for wentz the guy they gave up so much for

  12. 12 Media Mike said at 9:06 PM on August 13th, 2016:

I’d tend to agree with you, but I have a strong suspicion that they’re planning on double bubble wrapping him for all of 2016.

  13. 13 BobSmith77 said at 12:29 AM on August 14th, 2016:

If Bradford does on IR, I definitely think that is what they do especially if it is in the 1st half of the year with that guy likely starting some games.

I don’t see Wentz starting a game way or the other until after Thanksgiving at the earliest and likely 2-3 games in Dec when they are eliminated from playoff contention.

  14. 14 D3FB said at 7:39 AM on August 14th, 2016:

The problem with playing Wentz this season is you basically have to do it shortly after the bye, or wait until after the Seahawks, Packers, Bengals stretch of games from Nov 20- Dec4. And even then the remaining 4 games is the division rivals and Baltimore.

Of the first 9 games they are probably only major dogs vs the Steelers. But the last 7 is a tough stretch.

  15. 15 Media Mike said at 7:51 AM on August 14th, 2016:

Agreed; hence why I don’t think he plays until 2017 at the earliest. I think he spends the year bubble wrapped and if we IR Bradford there will be another vet signed. Wentz is QB3 for the year.

  17. 17 Media Mike said at 9:17 PM on August 13th, 2016:

I’m still confused as to how the Eagles expect to get 16 healthy and full games out of Peters this year after what we all saw last year.

  18. 18 P_P_K said at 9:55 PM on August 13th, 2016:

I’m a huge fan of Peters but I agree. Didn’t Jason make comments about Chip’s regime tiring him out? Maybe he, and the new coaches, truly believe he can play a full season. I guess with the current state of the O-line, they have little option but to believe. Make-believe, though, might be more realistic.

  19. 19 Media Mike said at 7:52 AM on August 14th, 2016:

That’s absolutely garbage that the NFLPA is in an agreement with this app (Aegis) and promote that application to players, but then turn around and say that they still can’t be held responsible for anything that goes wrong with products that receive a “green check mark.”

If you aren’t going to take any responsibility for what happens with supplements listed in the app as acceptable, then why are you promoting that app to the players and in an agreement with the app in the first place?

  28. 28 Jernst said at 10:03 PM on August 13th, 2016:

The issue isn’t that the NFL isn’t clear enough in providing a definitive list of banned substances, it’s that the FDA does not regulate any supplements. So a company can sell you a pill in GNC that says directly on its ingredients list that there’s no banned substances yet it can be chock full of stuff that’s not listed in the ingredients. Sounds like Lane bought supplements online, handed them to some team or NFLPA official to check if there was anything banned and all they did was look at the ingredients and check it against the list of banned substances. Nothing listed was banned and he was told he was good to go. Except it turns out the supplements contained things like banned peptides that weren’t listed as ingredients. And there’s no laws that prohibit or punish these companies for that.

  29. 29 Rambler said at 1:35 AM on August 14th, 2016:

It is fairly amazing that this industry still goes unregulated. There is a huge grey area with these products. A few years ago, there was a push that it would have some oversight, and some nutraceutical companies attempted to clean up their processes and products. But that threatened regulation never really came. So it still remains a free for all. If you do enough research however, there are a few companies that follow GMP and are ISO certified… I take a few supplements, and I only do so from companies that voluntarily subscribe to such regulations. But it is still a very confusing and deceptive industry, and I can easily see how a pro athlete can fall prey to it.

  30. 30 unhinged said at 5:18 PM on August 14th, 2016:

A free for all is better than the alternative. Big pharma has bought and paid for the FDA, and it has pushed very hard to regulate friggin’ vitamins because a ton of money is spent on supplements, and pharma wants no competition! There is so much information online about every substance one can put in the body, that there is no need to regulate, but simply to educate. That information is pharma’s big enemy. There are at any given time thousands of lawsuits targeting pharma because of its miserable track record in circulating very dangerous and often ineffective prescription drugs. It extends patents to ensure that retirees pay through the nose for essential medication, and it buys the legislators to maintain its stronghold on medicine costs. People need to be careful what they wish for.

  31. 31 Jernst said at 12:02 PM on August 15th, 2016:

Very good point about big pharma and their endless supply of lobbyists essentially allowing them to regulate themselves by buying the influence needed to do so with the FDA and our government.
The fact that we’re the only modern industrial county in the world where it’s actually illegal for medicare, Medicaid and other health insurances to negotiate the price of drugs with the drug companies is insane. It’s no wonder that drugs cost exponentially more here than in other countries.
Still, it’s not, or at least it shouldn’t be an all or nothing option. There could easily be laws requiring the accurate labeling of supplements without having the same level of regulation and requirements for the FDA to allow those supplements to be sold at all. I’m fine with you selling whatever you want, but you should have to accurately and truthfully list all ingredients and there should be recourse if you sell something to someone that has hidden, unlisted ingredients added in.

  32. 32 unhinged said at 7:49 PM on August 16th, 2016:

No it shouldn’t be but the way power is accrued and abused in our money-driven culture, it usually is all or nothing. It is the deification of winning over all else, celebrated amongst all classes, and typically only condemned in the lower ones. The supplement industry, though seems to me to be fairly well self-regulating. Reading ingredients has become second-nature to me, and it really ought to be drummed into every athlete’s head that you know exactly what you are ingesting. Misrepresentation on the part of supplement brands is probably mainly confined to the body-building sector, but even there, you can google the ingredients and read reviews of almost every sold supplement. It takes time, but it seems to work better than the bribery inherent in FDA approvals and bans.

  33. 33 Anders said at 3:43 AM on August 14th, 2016:

For all the shot and liability law suits in the us. The supplement market going free for any damage done in cases like this is crazy.
This is also the reason why Europeans are advised to never buy supplements from the us

  34. 34 Jernst said at 1:14 PM on August 14th, 2016:

It’s crazy to me that the US has become such an unregulated haven for this kind of BS. You’d think in a modern society it would have to be illegal to misrepresent the ingredients of products intended to be ingested by other humans. Especially when these Growth Hormone inducing peptides we’ve been talking about have been shown to cause cancer.

  35. 35 CrackSammich said at 12:55 PM on August 14th, 2016:

See, it’s not like it’s a completely unknown thing that these supplements are completely unregulated and based on some real shitty bro science and anecdotal evidence. These are professional athletes with multiple professional trainers and a full medical department at their disposal, and they’re still using the same decision making as the guy won’t stop curling in the squat rack at my gym. Yes, the supplement industry is screwed, but there’s no excuse for athletes continuing to fall for psuedoscience (see: Phelps and cupping; James Harrison and accupuncture; Every baseball player and those necklaces) and Lane Johnson is insistent on being the sacrificial lamb. That’s on him.

Also wasn’t crazy about Pederson’s post-game comment too regarding how he wanted to see Wentz hurdle a guy instead of slide too when he got asked about Wentz’s helicopter collision.

Wentz could free lance and run more recklessly at North Dakota St because of the competition. He does that in the NFL and your see more of these types of injuries. Already took some brutal shots just in his limited time in the first preseason game.

  48. 48 Jernst said at 11:53 AM on August 15th, 2016:

Yea, Wentz looks anything but brittle. He broke a bone in his wrist when it got smashed by a helmet and he got a hairline rib fracture on a helmet to ribs hit that I’m sure would have severed Bradford’s body in half. I’d imagine there isn’t anyone, outside of Wolverine from the X-men, that wouldn’t end up with a rib fracture after that.
The kid has never had a soft tissue injury or any injury to his ligaments which are the kind of injuries that seem to be recurring or indicative of being injury prone. His two broken bones are just freak occurrences that would happen to anyone when a helmet smashes them like that.

  49. 49 Jernst said at 11:55 AM on August 15th, 2016:

Yea I thought Pederson’s comments about hurdling the tackler were weird to say the least. It’s a meaningless preseason game, most coaches would be yelling at their prize draft pick to get down and protect himself not imploring him to recklessly throw his body around. I was actually more excited about his beautifully executed slide than I was excited about the prospect of having a QB that hurdles defenders.

Thankfully Our division Rivals have plenty of their own problems to worry about.
    ..
Im not GOING to rip the head coach because the rookie got hurt. Like come on? Wentz isn’t even going to play this year, people act like a couple games of preseason experience is really going to make a significant difference. i DONT even wants to see him play with the 3rd team any more. His talent jumped out the screen when he was on the field with 3rd team players who won’t even make the roster
    ..
My biggest Pet Peeve is worthless Chase Daniel taking second team game experience away from Wentz. For the 7million we are gifting to Chase, it shouldn’t be too much to ask to let the kid play with the second team just in the preseason games for the good of this franchise. It’s the least Chase could do.. But Wentz is hurt now so it doesn’t even matter… The silver linning was supposed to be Wentz making the second half of PS games exciting.. Now we can’t even have that..
    ..
Wonder how many Eagles fans will be at the Linc in the second half of the next PS game watching Chase and Bethel play QB… We just can’t have, nice things as eagle fans…#demoralized

I have a feeling that if the season were to start this week we’d see Wiz instead of Seumalo. I think the thought process of the coaching staff is that Seumalo is a young, cheap draft pick that we have high hopes for and hope would become a starter this year or next, while Wiz is a 1 year rental looking to get paid. Ideally, Seumalo would win the job outright and become a multiyear starter on a cheap salary and Wiz would provide much needed depth this year and allow us to stock up on competent backups next offseason when he moves on. Therefore, let’s see how the kid looks with the starters and force him to declare himself as an ineffective starter before we immediately go with the guy that might not return next year. If the light goes on for Seumalo, great, we’re right where we ideally want to be. If not, Wiz can start this year and we can readdress next offseason.

I try to never get too hyped or down based on meaningless preseason play but health/injuries do matter. Wentz’s injury is more unfortunate because now his miss the additional 4-6 quarters of game time to develop this preseason but not terrible news.

Johnson’s suspension matters a lot as Peters having the exact same injury he had last year Day 1 in camp. I thought 6 wins going into camp. Ratchet that down to 5 and they are a meaningful injury away to Bradford from being a 2 or 3 win team.

There seems to be plenty of Monday Morning Quarterbacking (or Friday Morning Coaching?) going on amongst the beat writers, and fans.

    1. Pederson should have pulled Wentz sooner so he wouldn’t have gotten hurt…so he could get more reps during preseason. Wait, what? The OL isn’t going to magically improve, so reps in game 2 are no less dangerous than reps in game 1. Had he not played Wentz, the same reporters would be ripping him for wasting precious reps on Daniels and McLeod.

    2. Wentz has to get rid of that ball quicker to avoid taking the hit from the rusher. And if he does? The articles claim he has happy feet, he can’t stand tall in the pocket, he is scared of NFL-quality defenders.

It is a hairline fracture on a rib. I promise, if we were in the midst of a Wentz-led playoff hunt, he would be strapping on a flak jacket and suiting up. Yes, it is preseason, the games don’t count and he needs to take care of himself. Except, preseason is all he gets this year so the games do matter for Wentz. He has a lot to prove and this is his shot.

Honestly, I think the beat reporters, and fans, want someone to blame for the remaining preseason games losing their biggest draw.

Normally the fans get too much in one direction but I can see why this have a negative vibe about this season. I do think especially with a new and untested coach.

For all of the complaining too that Eagles’ fans do about not winning a Super Bowl, this team hadn’t gone through any kind of prolonged down period either of 5-6 consecutive years of largely meaningless football.

As a Phils’ fan who came of age in the 80s, they essentially played twenty years and had one truly meaningful season (’93) from ’84 to ’00.

I agree and this is why the injury is concerning. I don’t care about the pre-season and there’s no reason to argue who is to blame. What concerns me is that everyone knows Carson needs a lot of coaching and prep work before he can attempt to become a franchise qb. Now, I can’t imagine any way Wentz can be ready to play in regular season games this year with no additional game experience. Practice can’t cut it.

Presumably, the plan was to use the pre-season to have Carson ready during the regular season if and when: Bradford gets hurt, Bradford sucks, and/or the team has no shot at the playoffs. Now, the clock on his learning and, therefore, his ability to take the reigns, is pushed way back.

  97. 97 RC5000 said at 4:51 PM on August 14th, 2016:

  98. 98 P_P_K said at 6:12 PM on August 14th, 2016:

I get what you’re saying. I diluted my main point, which was Carson’s lost opportunity during the pre-season. This is when the youngster would have a chance to develop in game situations. If he showed some chops, the team would have the option of playing him during the regular season.

For the sake of discussion, here’s three very possible scenarios:
    1. Eagles have a losing record.
    2. Sam injures his knees again.
    3. Carson plays way better thank Chase in pre-season and practice during the season.

Then, it seems entirely possible to me the Eagles would want Wentz on the field. Judiciously, at first, but increasing his playing time. Accelerate his learning and prep him for the future. Daniels remains at #2.

  111. 111 Jernst said at 11:38 AM on August 15th, 2016:

I think the bigger issue is that it ends up not being just RT. When we move Barbre out to RT, we’re now down to our 2nd string RT AND our 2nd string LG. This is of course speculation, but let’s assume Peters misses some time during those 10 games. Now instead of moving Lane to LT and putting either Barbre or someone else at RT which would allow us to weather that impending storm, we’ve suddenly got an Oline of Tobin – Seumalo – Kelce – Brooks – Barbre. As opposed to Johnson – Barbre – Kelce – Brooks – Tobin/Kelly/whoever. That might end up being worth 2 games if the offense ends up looking like 2014 against the 49ers for an extended period of time.

With our lack of depth, Johnson’s suspension makes the margin for error and our ability to withstand an injury (which with Peters barely able to make it through practice already is a high likelihood) razor thin. But, otherwise, yea, going down to your 2nd string RT shouldn’t normally cost you multiple games.

  112. 112 Anders said at 8:21 AM on August 16th, 2016:

Yeah, that’s my pick, too. Just hoping we see improvement over time.

  115. 115 Jernst said at 11:31 AM on August 15th, 2016:

5 seems really low. Every year is different. But, just comparing the roster to last years it’s hard for me to not think the roster has improved. Then you add the anticipated improvement in the defense now that the scheme fits our talent better and we have a competent DC. Then add a healthy Bradford as opposed to one that’s still rehabbing his knee, and it’s really hard for me to not think this team is better than last years version.

So, the question becomes what do we see as the effect of Chip Kelly’s coaching versus Doug’s. I know a lot of people feel that Chip was able to manifest offense with his scheme, but I feel that’s more based on what he did in years prior rather than last year. My contention is that Chip’s coaching was so bad from a schematic standpoint last year that his effect (both on offense and in tiring out our defense) was a net negative rather than a net positive. So, I assume that the schemes, both offensively and defensively and how they play off each other, will also be improved actually.

If last year’s team was good for 7 wins, I’d be hard pressed to say that this year’s team will be much worse than that. Given the state of the NFC East, even being extremely conservative, I see at least 3 wins there if we split all our division games and realistically more like 4. Then, regardless of how bad this team might be, they’re easily competitive with the likes of the Browns, Bears, Lions, Vikings, and Falcons. Even if we only win 2-3 of those 5 games we’re looking at at least 6 wins.

So 6 wins is, I believe, our floor. With our absolute ceiling being about 9. I think the over under of 7.5 is actually pretty accurate.

  116. 116 Insomniac said at 3:11 PM on August 15th, 2016:

Pederson will most likely won’t be able to right the ship in one year. The reason why I’m putting this team down is because they are still on that downward trend. Rookie coach and madding inconsistency from the offense won’t win us many games even if our defense can be good.

We added some nice pieces this offseason but so did everyone else. Assuming there are no major injuries, I can only comfortably say that we can beat the Browns, Lions, and Bears. Toss up for teams like Falcons, Vikings, and Redskins. Odds are against us beating the Giants, Steelers and Cowgirls. Major upsets if we beat the Packers, Bengals, and Seahawks. Maybe I’m underestimating the team but nothing to my knowledge has made me think that our defense has improved so much that it can carry the team this year.

Andre Johnson and Anquan Boldin recently found new NFL homes in Nashville and Detroit, respectively. Might Marques Colston be the next veteran free agent to be signed after a silent offseason?

The New Orleans Saints’ all-time leader in receptions (711), receiving yards (9,759) and receiving touchdowns (72) intends to continue his football career once he’s fully recovered from postseason shoulder surgery.

“Once I’m done with rehab,” Colston said this week, via PennLive.com, “I’ll see what’s out there.”

The 33-year-old added that there’s “no rush” to find a new team, suggesting he won’t sign before training camps end.

Although Colston was released with a failed physical designation after posting career lows in receptions (45), yards (520) and touchdowns (4) over 13 games last season, he has no hard feelings about the Saints organization.

“I had a great experience down there for a decade,” Colston explained. “I know it’s a business, and there are no hard feelings.”

If Colston fails to generate interest once the season starts, he won’t lack for post-career opportunities.

His off-the-field ventures include part ownership of the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul and a position as special adviser for Sport Testing Inc., a company designed to track a professional athletes’ strengths and weaknesses in all aspects of any sport.

if they decide to move on for some other young guy who may be a scrub, thats OK too. at least then we can stop talking about huff’s ‘potential’ all the damn time.

  157. 157 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:56 PM on August 15th, 2016:

Tampa has talented flashy WR and a big name RB, still won’t keep them from being one of the worst teams
    ..
Eagles fans make me laugh, the argument against drafting Zeke Elliot was the popular saying “You can just get a RB in round 5″…. Well we went out and got a RB in the 5th round, and now fans act like the sky is falling at RB? If ryan Mathews can give us 13 or 14 games our run game should be significantly better than last year. Might want to see what the 5th round RB can do playing with the 1s before concluding that we lack RB talent. Block well in the run game, and our RBs should be fine
    ..
I really think our lack of weapons is grossly exaggerated. We don’t have the big star WR, but we are equipped to go back to the days of “pass catcher by committe” where we spread the ball around to like 8 different pass catchers. Throwing to SPROLES and the TE will probably be a major aspect of our passing attack, meaning our WR just need to be decent complimentary weapons, but that doesnt even account for the Bigtime season Jordan Mathews is poised to have..
    ..
WR just isn’t a big deal as far as I’m concerned. Im way more worried about the OL… If the OL can perform as the best Line behind Dallas in our division, the offense should be fine
    ..
SPROLES should easily have his biggest season as an Eagle in terms of the passing game. Drove me insane how poorly chip used SPROLES as a WR. The media and the Fans would always talk to chip in terms of SPROLES being more WR, than RB, but it seems like chip wanted to show how smart he was using SPROLES as a RB and often ignoring what a pass catching weapon he is.
    .
OL should be better than last year
WR should be better than last year
TE should be better than last year
QB should be better than last year
Our run game was pathetic last year since defenses knew exactly where we would be running, if we can get 13-14 games out of Ryan Mathews, our run game should be better than last year
    ..
Our offense should be significantly less predictable than last year… none of this is enough to make us a legit contender, but I expect a team that will clearly show to be improved from last years team across the board.., that improvement isn’t enough to get us an 11 win season, but it baffles me why fans think we will be worse than last season, when we should be improved almòst across the board.
    .
Think this team finishes between 8 and 10 wins, but makes it crystal clear that we are Improving from last year almòst across the board
    ..
think we are being too under rated compared to our Rivals that probably have worst roster holes than we do, while our Rivals are being over rated specifically Dallas and the Giants…. I expect the division to be decided between the skins and Eagles, not because I think we are some great team, but because I think fans are mistakenly grossly over rating Dallas and the Giants who have some HUGE flaws that can be exposed thru regular season game planning

You’re being unfair. Kelly left us with freedom. After all, for Desean, the Eagles got nothing. For Maclin, nothing. For Avant, nothing. For Shady, nothing (a synonym for Kiko).
So, what’s your problem, mate? Like the song says, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.

  160. 160 BobSmith77 said at 3:40 PM on August 15th, 2016:

Jackson is completely different than Maclin. The Eagles by all reports made a very competitive offer to Maclin and really did want him back. He just got a better one from the Chiefs and signed there instead.

Avant was done when the Eagles let him go and they didn’t miss his pedestrian production the last 2 years.

Anyone see any articles yet using the All 22 film to evaluate our WRs from the Bucs game?
    ..
Mayock was talking about us not getting seperation, but it’s hard to really know to what extent based on the TV broadcast. Curious to see what our WR seperation looked like on the all 22 film.
    ..
One thing that makes PS tricky to evaluate is that it’s hard to know which veterans are just going thru the motions. There are veterans with secured roster spots that go into preseason games with preservation as their main goal who are more focused on not getting hurt than playing to the best of their capabilities
    ..
I think back to when we traded for Mufasa. He was TERRIBLE in his first preseason as an Eagle. Fans were all worried that Howie traded for a Lemon, then the regular season started and Mufasa was one of our bright spots during a Horrible season making it obvious to everyone that he was just going thru the motions in PS games we got all bent out of Shape about
    ..
And Meco was a new first year Eagle who came with questions about whether he could come back from his achilles injury, and this vereran DIDNT give two shits about making a good impression during his first preseason games as an Eagles. Instead of showing the Eagles got a good player, instead of shooting he was back to his old self from the achilles surgery, he went thru the motions playing like crap with a focus on preserving himself for the season….
    .
So when we see a veteran like Rueban Randle stinking it up in a preseason game, can’t make too much of it since we just don’t know why he sucks, is he trying to play as hard as possible and is struggling? Or is he just going thru the motions focusing on getting to the regular season healthy?
    .
Preseason can be very misleading, can’t make too much out of it, especially after just one preseason game especially when it comes to veterans who have a secure roster spot like a Rueban Randle.. PS means so little that we barely even put SPROLES on the field.
    ..
I care more about preseason games in terms of how our backups stack up against opponents 2nd and 3rd strings since we know those guys can’t afford to go thru the motions since they are fighting for roster spots…
    .
So I like seeing Jaylen Watkins continue to develope and look good on the field against other teams backups.
    .
I liked seeing Means and Joe Walker stand out against backups
    .
Wentz had a bad game, but his talent level jumped thru the screen especially since he was sorrounded by backups
    ..
I won’t even try to evaluate a starting veteran WR when he is playing a preseason game with friggin Chase Daniel
    ..
Preseason success and failures can be very misleading, and our team certainly isn’t firing on all cylnders at this stage of a season playing in new schemes, and we don’t know how hard our opponents are playing…. So Im trying to not łet what my eyes see in the preseason change my opinipns too much, especially about guys I have seen in real game action like Rueban Randle

I get what you are saying, even Cox was taking it easy the last couple years in preseason games. I remember people freaking out that he wasn’t dominating like he should. Then the regular season came around and he was blowing up OL like he should. But its a little different with Randle. Yes, I think he will make the team but he is on a one year prove-it deal and has to know he won’t get many more chances. The knock on him in NY was that he didn’t seem interested, would run wrong routes and would take plays off. That is what we saw Thursday. He is that until he proves otherwise.

“So even though the shoulder surgery wasn’t on his right arm, Kaepernick’s whole throwing process was impacted by going under the knife. Kelly said on Friday that both Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert throw anywhere between 86 and 102 passes per day in training camp. A few months ago during OTAs in May, Kaepernick had barely resumed throwing short passes.”
