The Dress Rehearsal

Things I’ll be watching:
Wendell Smallwood – The rookie RB will get his first action of the preseason. It will be interesting to see how he runs, catches and blocks. He has to prove he can do everything if the coaches are going to trust him and use him freely during the regular season.
OL – Tonight we get Stefen Wisniewski at LG with Isaac Seumalo out. How will Wiz play? And what about the backup OL. Will Andrew Gardner move into the backup RG spot? How will the coaches use Barrett Jones?
Stephen Tulloch – How much will he play? How will the Eagles use him?
The WRs – Nelson Agholor took a step forward last week. He needs to build on that. Josh Huff needs to up his game in a big way. The coaches seem to like Chris Givens, but he’s been basically invisible so far. Oh yeah…and we need to see what that DGB guy can do.
Young CBs – Eric Rowe was better last week. He needs to keep that momentum going. Jalen Mills missed the PIT game. Both guys feel like a lock to make the roster at this point. They’re fighting for the confidence of the coaches and playing time.
Young DEs – I’m curious to see if Steven Means and/or Marcus Smith gets mixed in with the starting D at all. We know who the Big 3 are at DE. We don’t know who will be the fourth and how much that person will play. Means has had the better offseason, but Smith might have more upside. Both played well last week so it will be interesting to see how and when the coaches use them. I’d love to see Smith go against starting O-linemen. We’d see very quickly if he’s really gotten better or just looked good against backups last week.

Obviously we all want to see the starting offense throw the ball effectively. The last 2 weeks have been less than overwhelming. The Colts are sitting some key DBs and their best pass rusher so the Eagles have a favorable situation. Sam Bradford needs to get the ball to his playmakers, who have to get open and then catch the ball when it does come their way.
The Eagles won’t be using their best plays and they won’t be gameplanning like normal, but that is no excuse. They need to throw the ball effectively tonight. That doesn’t mean 300 yards or 3 TDs. There are no specific targets. They just need to pass the eye test. We need to see:
- Good protection
- Accurate throws
- Crisp routes
- Smooth catches
This isn’t on one player or unit. The whole offense is part of this.

Depends how much of a pain you want to deal with. Google “first row sports” for a decent streaming site, but be very careful to not click any ads.
yeah i generally love first row sports but it gets a little crazy if you try to export that to tv with chromecast, I guess i can’t be so picky.
I’m a big fan of having a computer hooked up to my TV to serve as my media center. But again, depends on how much of a pain you want to deal with.

Barring injuries this is a top 5 defense.
And when thinking about it only the Broncos D comes to my mind which is better than ours.
broncos have better secondary but our pass rush is just going to eat teams alive, can’t wait. Plus these are our backup DL, like the starters are too good to even play.
The CBs have to play a little better. I think the LBs will get better with more game time, but I love this front 4.
Panthers, Cardinals, Seahawks, Rams, Pats, Bengals, Chiefs, Texans, Jets and Ravens might disagree. Not saying we can’t be top 5, but there are other good defenses out there.

He only had 16 career receiving TDs including 2 playoff TDs.
We did it with DeSean… once. (He pushed off at just the right time.) With regularity? I can’t even remember. Pre-McNabb. Or maybe Jeff Garcia threw some.
Now, if we could only play against everyone’s 4th string CBs, we might win some games.

Besides the obvious so far, CJ Smith was getting a ton of snaps. He was mostly covering Moncrief and Dorsett. Those are some speedy dudes.

Just realized I hadn’t seen Rowe on the field at all. Still hoping that kid steps up, but he sure looks like he’s deep in the staff’s doghouse.
it could also be the matchups too. Indy has smaller fast guys and Rowe does struggle with those type of guys.
All the more reason to get him on the field. He’s got to improve on handling the quick guys. He’s got the length and speed to handle most guys over the top. The biggest knock this offseason was he’s been playing soft and giving stuff up underneath all day long.
Moncrief was beating him underneath but he handled Dorsett pretty well.
Even if DGB just catches fades for TDs all year long its already a fleecing for Dennis Kelly.
Hell, if he forces DCs to double him in the redzone and he never catches a pass, but opens up the field for everyone else, we robbed the Titans blind.

They did play him in a preseason game when the starting LT was out. Granted the injury did happen on a scramble.

Yeah, it won’t be this good in the regular season. But the GB game was just a couple of drives wasn’t it? This is at least a full half. Bradford honestly doesn’t look as good as he did in that game… though he looks more like somewhere midseason last year, when he had stopped completely sucking, was getting consistent, but was hardly ever throwing downfield.
So can we shut the starters down now?

I didn’t like that we kept him over some more athletic (though much more raw) young guys either. But he’s really done well for himself in all phases. Pretty impressed
That play was pre-season incarnate, runner and 2 blockers vs 1 dude, both blockers miss, one taking out the other badly.
That play just kind of summed up 2015 Eagles football for me.
Nice screen pass, though not so good that the two blockers set up ahead of the carrier both missed the guy who made the tackle

Ironically it took Akers 3 years until he caught on with the Eagles. Parkey has time to develop, will be on another team though.

Okay, 3 preseason games in, here’s my projected 53-man roster:
QB(3): 7 Bradford|10 Daniel|11 Wentz
Comments: This is a lock.
RB(4): 24 Mathews|43 Sproles|34 Barner|28 Smallwood
Comments: Smallwood has barely played this preseason and won’t likely play next week if he has a concussion but I doubt they cut him. I don’t think they could get away with putting him on IR as a stash. I think they keep him and he’s a weekly inactive to start the year.
WR(5): 81 Matthews|18 Green-Beckham|17 Agholor|19 Givens|13 Huff
Comments: No Paul Turner? Yes, I know he’s looked good in preseason compared to other WRs but I don’t think we should overrate pre-season performance. I would keep him over Givens personally but I think the Eagles want a deep-threat outside receiver. It may not be Givens, it may end up being someone claimed on waivers. They may keep Turner initially and then pick up another outside receiver. That would make it easier to sneak Turner onto the the PS. But as far as the final roster that makes Week 1 of the season, I don’t think Turner is there. He’s a slot receiver and is behind Matthews and likely Huff there. I also haven’t seen him get a ton of ST snaps.
TE(4): 86 Ertz|87 Celek|47 Burton|85 Pantale
Comments: I considered keeping only 3 TEs and going heavier on the OL since Gordon can get reps at FB but they likely want a classic TE build player for STs purpose for that #4 TE. In addition, with them likely using a lot of 3 TE sets they probably need 4 TEs on the roster in case someone gets hurt. I’m not sure the 4th will end up being Pantale vs. a waiver pickup.
OL(9): 71 Peters|73 Seumalo|62 Kelce|79 Brooks|76 Barbre|61 Wisniewski|64 Tobin|72 Vaitai|69 Gordon
Comments: Johnson is likely to be suspended and won’t count against the 53-man roster. I’m not keeping Gardner on the intial 53-man roster. If I want to keep him, I cut him before Week 1 and then re-sign him before Week 2. That way his salary won’t become guaranteed for the season. I’d then cut one of Vaitai or Gordon and hope to get them on the PS. I’ve been more impressed by Gordon.
DL(10): 55 Graham|91 Cox|96 Logan|98 Barwin|93 Martin|94 Allen|90 Smith|51 Means|77 Vaeao
Comments: Both Marcus Smith and Steven Means were up with the 1st string kick coverage units, a good sign for both. Smith was in ahead of Means this game, but they seem to be rotating who plays with the 2nd vs. 3rd teams somewhat(see Reynolds/Countess being ahead of Watkins/Maragos last week) so I wouldn’t necessarily say Smith is ahead of Means. But I think both have played well. I’m keeping Smith’s upside over Braman’s STs ability. Hart may make it over Martin depending on the health of each. I’m keeping Vaeao for now as I don’t see anyone I want on the roster ahead of him. He might be a casualty if we pick up a sixth LB on waivers.
LB(5): 95 Kendricks|58 Hicks|53 Bradham|52 Goode|54 Tulloch
Comments: Thin position. Hope they pick someone up on waivers. At minimum try to get one of the 2-year veterans that you’re now allowed on the PS.
CB(6): 22 Carroll|21 McKelvin|33 Brooks|32 Rowe|31 Mills|37 Smith
Comments: I have Mills and Smith making it but both are vulnerable to upgrades on the waiver wire. They could also keep only 5 if they want to keep 6 WRs which’d mean Turner makes it. Mills adds emergency safety depth. Grymes could make it over one of them if he’s healthy enough.
S(4): 27 Jenkins|23 McLeod|26 Watkins|42 Maragos
Comments: Pretty confident these will be the 4. Don’t think Reynolds makes it this year.
ST(3): 6 Sturgis|8 Jones|46 Dprembps
Comments: I’d say this is a lock.
I think they got Gardner to take a pay cut; that may aid his making the team.
Hackenberg threw TD vs. Giants to Temple’s Robby Anderson on his first drive but then went 2-10 and threw int.
