The First Depth Chart

Posted: August 8th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 99 Comments »

The Eagles play on Thursday night so they had to release the first depth chart of the season.

As Jeff points out, this was done by the PR staff and not the coaches. Now, that said, the PR staff has been watching practices and is bound to hear some things in the building. Don’t totally dismiss this just because it wasn’t officially done by the coaching staff.

Let’s talk about what sticks out.

Reuben Randle is listed as a starting WR over Chris Givens or Josh Huff. None of the trio has been so good that they locked up a starting gig alongside Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor. We don’t know for a fact Randle will get the nod over the others, but it is interesting to see him listed there for now.

Stefen Wisniewski is listed as the backup at C and RG. Interesting. Has he been so good they felt he had to be listed at both spots or have none of the third string C/OG’s played well enough to be listed as a second stringer? I’m curious to see where Wiz lines up initially. I don’t feel great about OG so I’d prefer him there, but the Eagles may feel differently.

The Eagles clearly like Connor Barwin, Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham at a similar level. They are essentially listed as co-starters (or should that be tri-starters?). It doesn’t matter who starts. The key will be watching how the snaps are divided. Is there a big drop-off from the starters to the third guy? Alex McCallister and Marcus Smith are listed as the top backups. I actually think Bryan Braman and Steven Means should be listed ahead of them. We’ll see what happens on Thursday evening.

CB is kinda wild. Ron Brooks is listed as a starter. Eric Rowe is listed as a third teamer. And JaCorey Shepherd is on the fourth team. Last summer Shepherd had a real chance to be the team’s nickelback. Right now he might be on the roster bubble. You wonder what is up with his knee. Is he all the way back? Some of you are worried about Rowe. Should he move to S? Can he play NB if needed there? The Eagles still love his upside at CB. He’s stay there for now. He could play S, as he did for most of his career at Utah. I don’t think he could play NB in the NFL.

I’m also curious about the OLBs. I want to see if Quinten Gause plays weak or strong LB. The same is true for Myke Tavarres. We know the starters, but the backups are still a mystery. Who can play? Where will they play?

Just because some people are listed at a given spot doesn’t mean the team feels strongly about that player. Last year on the opening depth chart the backup RG was John Moffitt, who didn’t make the team. Rookie Jordan Hicks was behind Brad Jones. Earl Wolff was the top backup at S. A lot changed in the ensuing weeks. One of Chip Kelly’s sayings that really was true…the players set the depth chart. The coaches put something together based on the offseason, but what happens in games and at Training Camp really decides who plays when and where and how long.

*****

Jordan Matthews will be out a couple of weeks. The hope is to have him back for the third preseason game.

This will hurt the effectiveness of the passing game for the next 2 weeks, but could be a bit of a blessing in disguise. There will be extra reps for the young receivers, something that can be invaluable when trying to earn a starting job or a roster spot.

We know what Matthews can do. Randle, Huff, Givens, TJ Graham, Cayleb Jones, Paul Turner and Marcus Johnson are still mysteries.

*****

In his PC, Doug Pederson offered a lot of praise for LT Matt Tobin. I’m interested to see how he does in the game. I wasn’t sure Tobin would make the team, but he’s played well enough to be the backup at LT. The preseason games will be huge for him. Tobin has to show he deserves a spot. He also has to convince the coaches of how they should use him. Is he active on gamedays? Would you dare put him at LT in a real game?

Speaking of OL, the consensus is that rookie Halapoulivaati Vaitai has struggled this spring and summer. Right now, he would be a long shot to even make the team. That’s what the practice squad is for. He’s big and has good feet. This is a guy you work with. He has good upside. Vaitai does have to play well enough in the games to make the team want to keep him around. 5th round picks don’t get several years. They have to show something to the coaches.

just need Burton to step in and help the WR group then its not so bad. KC lite, beat em deep at times and hope Matthews can help run game with TEs in lots of rotations.

Definitely a couple of question marks with that initial depth chart. But it will become clearer after a few preseason games. I think my biggest question is Wiz… based on what I have heard so far, he deserves to be starting LG. Hopefully that comes to fruition.

  5. 5 Media Mike said at 8:01 AM on August 9th, 2016:

I think they’ll arrive at that conclusion going into the Browns game.

  6. 6 Ben said at 12:06 AM on August 9th, 2016:

I would like to see Seumalo win the LG position but it sounds like he may not be quite ready.
If not then it would be encouraging if Wiz could supplant Barbre but the coaches seem to like Barbre more for some reason.
He must be a good practice player or have some dirt on Lurie or something.

  7. 7 Media Mike said at 8:02 AM on August 9th, 2016:

Wis to start at LG and Seumalo can take it over when he’s ready. If that is 2017; so be it.

  8. 8 Media Mike said at 8:03 AM on August 9th, 2016:

Hopefully HPV can improve somewhat and be a long term part of this roster. We need a starting RT as soon as Peters is done and Lane flips over to LT. If Tobin can acclimate to playing T in the NFL; I’d love to see him as the long(er) term 3rd tackle.

  9. 9 D3FB said at 9:11 AM on August 9th, 2016:

Big V is most likely a swing tackle. He reminds me alot of King Dunlap, and if he becomes that kind of player it’s a nice pick by the front office. I think next year you want to sink one of the first few picks we have into a RT. Let that kid compete with Kelly and Big V. Ideally the rookie wins the job, Seumalo has emerged at LG, and you have Lane-Seumalo-Kelce-Brooks-Rook, with Big V as the swing tackle, and some of the guys we PS battling Tobin for depth on the interior.

  10. 10 A_T_G said at 12:23 PM on August 9th, 2016:

If HPV doesn’t work out it will be a terrible waste of nickname resources. Perhaps the biggest since Disco Stu.

  11. 11 Gary Barnes said at 10:59 AM on August 9th, 2016:

Oh, the short term lives of kickers in the NFL. It seemed like yesterday that Parkey replaced Henery, but he got injured early last season, Sturgis came in and now it looks like Sturgis has him on the ropes for the full time job. Going to be an interesting battle throughout preseason.

ST may show Barner sticking on the roster since he is a backup at both KOR and PR along with his offensive role. Sorry Media Mike 😉

The Graham/Curry/Barwin situation at DE seems to have tightened up recently. It seemed like for a while there Barwin & Curry were clearly the starters with Graham and Smith as the primary backups. Graham may be pushing for a bigger role, will be interesting to see the number of snaps during preseason games.

  15. 15 A_T_G said at 12:19 PM on August 9th, 2016:

I can’t help but notice how different our CB landscape is this year. Last year, Rowe, Shepard, and Rice were all guys for our future. Now I think it is less likely that they all make the roster than it is that none do.

Why such a stark contrast? Did they all drop off significantly? Is the system that different? Is it just a differenc in coaches opinions?

  16. 16 SteveH said at 12:43 PM on August 9th, 2016:

CB seems like such a volatile position, players stock goes up and down like crazy. Remember when Boykin looked like a star in the making? 6 picks from the slot corner, some of them really impressive. No clue how he’s managed to fall off a cliff.

  17. 17 peteike said at 12:45 PM on August 9th, 2016:

agree, its nuts but I think we still have some hitting and tackling in games to see just yet. Mills is last years Rowe. I still like the youth and depth there, just want them to step up or was hoping it would be this year for Rowe. Still wish theyd try him at safety since the depth there doesnt excite me

  30. 30 A_T_G said at 1:55 PM on August 9th, 2016:

Apparently we get an answer to the question of the next tackle sooner than we thought:

“Peters is actually expected to suit up on Thursday and go through warm-ups, which is a good sign. He won’t play, though. Matt Tobin, and not Lane Johnson, will start at left tackle. Pederson said the reason for not moving Johnson over is because Tobin has played well in camp.”

  58. 58 jaws80 said at 5:24 PM on August 9th, 2016:

due diligence for now on should be: “Oh, you were a QB in highschool and in college switched to OL, with the need to gain 100 pounds in order to ever play in the NFL. No thanks.”
If he still needed PEDs even after his first failed test, then his body just was never supposed to be a NFL tackle. Failed drug tests = failed experiment of converting a highschool QB to a NFL tackle.

And also seems we have another failed first round QB conversion to a lineman experiment with Marcus Smith – no failed tests of course, just cant play, due to what we have been told for a few years, not strong enough yet.. yet… yet…. yet… and cut.

Lets keep high school QB conversion experiments to the later rounds. In the draft both Lane and Smith were said to need to gain weight and strength, and both got a pass because, after all, just three or so years before they were playing QB.

  59. 59 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:24 PM on August 9th, 2016:

After letting this city down being suspended for 4’games last year, we give him a Monster extension and he repays us with a 10 game suspension for cheating? Letting down your city, you let down a new coaching staff and a first year HEADCoach, you let down Bradford who is playing for his future, you let down SProles and Jason Peters who’s careers are coming to an end..
    ,,
This is just pathetic on so many levels. Im disgusted that im such a fan of such a chicken shit lineman who lets down an entire city a,few months After giving his family financial security to last a lifetime.. Thanks lane, Only pussies need PEDs. I can’t believe this is happening.

    .
Can’t believe this is happening to us

  62. 62 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:43 PM on August 9th, 2016:

The one positive, is we have enough positional versatility in our offensive Lineman to where we can mix and match positions and put our 5 best Offensive Lineman on the field thanks to vetsatility of guys Like Barbre, Wisnewski, Tobin, Seumalo who are all capable of playing multiple positions.
    ..
So even if Tobin gets the first look at RT, by the time the season starts, I think our starting OL will be:
    Barbie at RT
    Brooks at RG
    Kelce Center
    Wisnewski LG
    Peters LT
    ..
I don’t think Tobin is better than any of those 5 players, and fortunately guys have enough positional vetsatility to enable us to put our 5 best guys on the field… And Tobin or Seumalo becomes the first man off the bench, probably Tobin because he is versatile enough to be that swing tackle/Guard
    ..
So even if Tobin starts now, I don’t think he will be startng against Cleveland, unless he has improved drastically to the point where he is clearly a more capable tackle than Barbie, but I thought Barbe always did a solid job when he had to move to tackle for us sporadically

I feel like the burger I just ate from Hardy’s (Carl’s Jr of the South) would light up one of those tests like a Christmas tree. So I’m out.
