Mills to Start?

It sure sounds like CB Leodis McKelvin is going to miss Monday night’s game. That would leave the Eagles with 3 healthy CBs in Nolan Carroll, Ron Brooks and rookie Jalen Mills. Carroll will start on one side. And the other?

There is a real possibility that Mills will get the nod. I think he absolutely should. Mills played well last Sunday. Brooks was up and down. Obviously Brooks has more experience, but he only had 3 career starts coming into this season so it isn’t as if he’s someone you can plug in at CB and count on. Mills is more naturally gifted and is more instinctive. There is the added benefit that starting Mills allows Brooks to focus on playing the slot. It can be tricky to shuffle between the slot and playing outside.

Check out Mills in action.

The thing you love about that is Mills playing smart football. He’s off the receiver and focused on the sticks since it is 3rd/7. Mills keeps his eyes on the QB while also knowing where the WR is. Mills knows he has Safety help over the top so he focuses on the underneath coverage. If RG3 doesn’t make a bad throw, Mills is right there to pick it off.

This wasn’t the only play where Mills looked good while doing his job. He really impressed me. I was worried when McKelvin went out of the game, but Mills and Brooks did a good job of filling his shoes.

Les Bowen wrote a good piece on the situation. He got the DBs to share their thoughts.

Carroll said he isn’t too worried about having to nurse Mills through the game, if the rookie starts.

“He’s one of the more ready corners I’ve been around, as a young guy . . . I don’t think he’s scared. He embraces the challenge. I don’t have to tell him anything,” Carroll said.

“He’s confident. You can see that in his play, you can see that from his demeanor. There’s not too much we have to tell him when he’s out there.”

Jim Schwartz has also praised Mills quite a bit. Schwartz loves the attitude Mills plays with, especially his competitive spirit. CB is one spot where confidence and attitude really do matter. Corners are out on an island. They need to be cocky, almost delusional. Mills was up and down in the preseason, but now seems to be fully healthy and fully confident.

CB is uncertain down the road. McKelvin is 31. Carroll is a UFA next year. Brooks is more of a role player than anything else. It would be nice to see if Mills is a player the Eagles can count on to be part of the future. Monday night will be a huge opportunity for him.

*****

The Eagles added QB Aaron Murray to the practice squad earlier this week.

The team needed depth at QB and Pederson knew Murray from their time together in KC.

Solid arm. Some mobility. Knows the offense. Solid choice for a young #3 QB. We’ll see if he has a future with the team. Pederson learned from Andy Reid, who learned from Ron Wolf. You add QBs on a regular basis and always look for more.

I don’t really agree with doing it, but I do respect their right to do so. I don’t think it is necessarily the best means to the end they seek either. I’d much rather see all of those players who are doing demonstrations leading voter registration and get out the vote drives in communities currently represented by politicians who are insensitive to the needs of the communities who are most victimized by the problems guys like Jenkins are trying to highlight.

They’ll be blasted for anything political. On or off the field. Not sure if it helps or hurts their cause to do whatever it is that they are thinking of, but protests are not supposed to be comfortable. I don’t especially like it but in their opinion their views are brushed aside unless they do something that cannot be easily ignored.

The same people who carp about political correctness the most demand it of our athletes. And as they love to say, “you have a right to be offended”.

  9. 9 Iskar36 said at 7:25 AM on September 17th, 2016:

As far as protests go, I’m not sure there are many more peaceful forms than what we are seeing throughout the NFL, so frankly, I am in full support of it. No one is delaying games, no one is disrupting other people’s lives beyond having several articles and the announcers talk about it. The protest is doing exactly what it set out to do, create the dialogue over racism and discrimination, without creating separate problems. You can argue how effective these protests are certainly in terms of effecting change, but I have no issue with players expressing their beliefs in a way that creates such minimal disrupruption in an attempt to create discussion.

You can love cops and hate police violence at the same time. You can make an expression of sympathy for victims of violence (police and otherwise) while having an equal amount of sympathy for cops, military service members, etc. Generally, they do a great job doing a job i wouldn’t want to do – but we can all agree that there’s things that could be done better.

Think the biggest problem is being made to feel like you have to be on one side or another. False dichotomies are only helpful if you don’t want anything to change.

  53. 53 laeagle said at 3:01 PM on September 17th, 2016:

    Self-serving? That’s ludicrous. Utterly delusional.

Let’s see if I can lay this out in a manner you might be able to comprehend.

The anthem is about the country. It is not about the military, it is not about the cops, or firemen. It is about our country. The flag, the anthem, these are false idols. What we honor is our country, and more specifically, the ideals upon which it was built.

Our country is built on values of equality and justice for all.

Right now, things are happening in our country, which is built on those ideals, that go directly against those ideals. What’s worse is that the bad things are being done by people who represent the country, namely, bad police officers. Not all police offers, but bad police officers. The bad things are institutionalized, and these bad things controvert the ideals of our country.

If the anthem is about the country, and thus about its ideals, and those ideals aren’t being followed, particularly in reference to members of a specific race, then it makes 100% sense to protest, during the anthem. Not only does this point out that our ideals are not being followed, it does so on a national stage so that people are aware of it.

It’s about bringing attention to an issue that needs to be fixed if we are to truly claim those ideals as our own. If we are not upholding those ideals, then we are betraying our country, and our anthem rings hollow.

Anyone who tells you that such a protest is “unamerican” is either a complete fucking moron, truly “unamerican” themselves, or has an agenda.

One thing that I did like about Carson – no turnovers. Was sacked but not fumbles, no terrible throws in the middle of the field, no cross-body throws, no hero ball. But he also wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger on deep balls.

  66. 66 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:21 PM on September 17th, 2016:

    Amazing Poise..
    ..
That may have been the most impressive performance I have ever seen in a rookie QB debut in terms of how advanced he was Presnap. Wentz owned the Browns defense Presnap. He looked like a puppet master forcing them to show their intentions Presnap, then quickily processed the info, knew where to go with the ball, and shreaded their defense… Was Peyton Manning already that good Presnap at the begginning of his rookie season?
    ..
Who the hell could have imagined that a kid from Northh dakota, who almost missed the entire preseason, could already be THAT advanced throwing into NFL windows?.. I watched a hall of fame Qb (Rothlisberger) and the best WR in the NFL (ANTONIO brown) avoid josh Norman all game last week. Carson Wentz had no problem going after Joe Haden as if he was an average corner.
    ..
Mind blowing how well the kid handled all the exotic blitzes and disguise the Browns DC tried to confuse him with. He made them pay every time they tried to blitz him… Im sure that really impressed his teammates and that the veterans are a little more confident in him than they were a week ago.
    ..
What was really great about the no turnover performamce is that there wasn’t much luck involved. It’s not like defenders were dropping a bunch of INTs that landed in their Lap.
    ..
That was easily one of the most Impressive rookie QB debuts I have ever seen. Nothing “homer” about it… It’s also impressive that he could play that well even tho our run game was just average that day. It’s not like he benefitted from a dominant run game
    ..
If he looks THAT good again on Monday night leading us to a 2-0 start, Wentz Mania will really explode. Be nice to build up some more confidence going into the steelers game

I love how we match up with the Bears. This is a great game for Wentz because it will be a step up in competition from the Browns, but nothing we shouldnt be able To manage.
    ..
The Bears have a solid front seven, better than what the Browns brought to philly, so it will be important that we clean up our run game because as the competition increases, Wentz will need the run game to take some pressure off him.. The OL has some run blocking to clean up from last week, but once Wentz gashes the defense with a big run Keeping the ball on a zone read, it should provide a little more space for Ryan Mathews to get loose.
    ..
Jason Peters and Lane need to be sharper this week because they will face a better edge rush than what the Browns threw at them.
    ,.
The Bears also have some nice Linebackers that complete their solid front 7

Now the good news….. The Bears secondary is a mess. It’s as bad as the Browns, possibly worse, so wentz should be able to manufacture some big plays down field to the WRs… Need to get DGB going, and another good game from Agholar could be great for his confidence. I anticipate a monster season out of jordan mathews, and he should have his way with the Bears DB’s… The Bears safeties are pigeons we can pick on
    ..
As for our Defense, our edge rushers should have a big game against the suspect OT’s of Chicago, who are no where close to as good as joe Thomas was last week. Our edge rushers should have a huge impact on this game, beating up Cutler and forcing turnovers. I expect us to get at least 5 sacks this week…
    ..
The Browns may have weak OT’s but they have a real nice guard tandem, but as good as kyle long is, playing thru a bum shoûlder when you have to deal with Cox and Logan is a rough task.. The Bears are also down to their back up center already, so im expecting Schwartz DL to take over this game and batter jay Cutler..
    ..
The Bears RB is average, middle of the pack type RB who isn’t scaring anyone. Their TE Zack Miller is also solid, but nothing special
    .
Unfortunately Alshon Jeffries is a beast, and Kevin white is raw, but really talented, kind of like DGB.. This won’t be an easy match up for our corners, but they faced similar big body WRs against the Browns, but Alshon Jeffries is on another level so we may have to roll Safety help over to his side. If we struggle to hit Cutler it becomes a dangerous match up especially on the road with a rookie QB… But if our DL roughs up Cutler the way I think they will, we should be able to win this game..
    ..
These are the types of teams we have to beat because of our tôugh schedule. Gotta take care of business Monday night, with a tough matchup against the steelers on deck..

27-16 Eagles win, Ginger Gunslinger brings a 2-0 record into the battle of Pennslyvania week 3 against the steelers

  133. 133 FairOaks said at 11:00 PM on September 17th, 2016:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp/2016/09/15/jeff-fishers-rams-contract-extension-seems-crazy-but-really-isnt-that-nuts/

Another article there mentions Keyshawn Johnson has said that from his sources, Jeff Fisher never wanted Goff, but wanted to keep the picks and draft more quantity. But, it sounds like the team (*cough* owner *cough*) wanted to make a bigger splash for the move to LA, so forced the trade.

So… maybe the extension is an apology for basically providing the team with no real QB for the immediate future, and making the coach suffer through that in a contract year. A three year extension might be enough time to get Goff ready and/or find someone else, to give Fisher a reasonable shot. Of course, Fisher might be the *reason* that Goff never makes it, if he never does…

  134. 134 anon said at 11:06 PM on September 17th, 2016:

wow he gets an extension bc the owner picked the qb? does fisher want goff to be good?

  135. 135 FairOaks said at 11:10 PM on September 17th, 2016:

That was a personal guess. The WP article was saying that the Rams’ overall stats are really more towards the middle of the pack, not that bad, and a big improvement from before he got there. They have been supposedly victimized by tough schedules, and lack of healthy and good QBs.

My guess was that if the owner completely botched this attempt at QB by forcing that trade (then letting everyone see on Hard Knocks), and knows it, then *maybe* this is an apology or at least giving Fisher a chance next year with a more-seasoned Goff.

I was sort of hoping for that (well Foles of 2014/2015). It seemed like Foles was just in a good groove all of 2013, including over the summer, when he was in the battle with Vick. He never seemed to get that feel back — reports from summer and training camp of 2014 were very different, and he never really was that good again. For his sake, I hope he finds it again, but it does not seem likely.

So I was hoping that the same would happen to Cousins this year (and going forward). He played well last year, albeit against not-so-good teams, but it may have been a one-year thing. And I won’t be hoping anything for his sake until he’s not playing for an NFC East opponent 😉

  291. 291 unhinged said at 4:43 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Quick takeaway, having not seen any of either game: NO and TB will be battling for WC position in late December. NY defense is better than it was last year. Washington has holes in its armor. They go to NY next week. If Giants win next week, they’ll be 3-0 and 2-0 in the division. Skins will be left for dead. If we lose to either the Giants or Dallas, the first time around, the division will be a long rode to hoe.

  292. 292 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:03 PM on September 18th, 2016:

i don’t know that anyone in our division will win so many games that a team that starts bad won’t have a chance to keep up..

Also there have been a few times where the skins started bad in recent history, yet managed to claw their way back into the division hunt, so I don’t know that Im writing them off at 0-3, but they certainly don’t look like a team that is clearly building on their division title last year and taking their game to the next level, which is a surprise to me, because I thought dallas and the Giants would prove to be bigger frauds and that this division would come down to the Eagles and skins in December. Sure doesnt look that way now, but it’s still way too early to get a read on all these teams.
    ..
But if the skins lose again next week, Cousins is going to start feeling the pressure

Looks like Marvin Lewis also reached his ceiling already. Wonder if he will have the balls to make the switch to McCarron at some point this year? I understand it’s a hard decision because they are so good in the regular season with Dalton and McCarron is an unknown, but the Bengals are very close to that famous definition of Insanity where they keep doing the same thing, and expecting different results, even tho the results have pretty much been the same for years now.
    ..
Bet part of marvin Lewis WOULDNT mind if Dalton goes down with an injury for a few weeks, so the difficult decision of benching Dalton is out of his hands…
    ..
At this point, I almost wish the Bengals WOULDNT bother taking one of the few playoff spots, since they implode as soon as they get to January any way

  305. 305 unhinged said at 4:47 PM on September 18th, 2016:

I think Marvin gets a little more love than Jeff Fisher only because the Bengals contend consistently as they fall flat consistently. Rams seem to show up for their division rivals, and then mail it in for their other games. A lot of talent on those two rosters getting squandered.

  306. 306 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:28 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Yeah I imagine all the talent on those rosters would look like a very different team with a real coaching stud like Bellicheat in charge.
    ..
Marvin Lewis has basically become andy Reid without any of the playoff success
    ..
Jeff Fisher is the single most Incompetant coach in the NFL. Im convinced that no amount of infusion of talent can turn a Jeff fisher team around, Jeff fisher makes Rex Ryan look like Bellichik
    ..
Ridiculous that the Bills lost because the Rob Ryan defense couldn’t stop the jets, yet offensive coordinator Greg Roman was fired,.. Probably lost all credibility with the players. The firing of Greg Roman is one of the most blatant transparent acts of Nepotism
    ..
Marvin Lewis needs to be Fired
    .
Jeff Fisher should never coach in the NFL again, when you have been a coach since I was a child, and you still can’t get it done, it’s time to hang them up.
    .
Rex Ryan needs to be Fired
    ..
Chuck Pagano, and Ryan Grigson should be fired before week 8
    ..
The NFL needs to stop recycling the same washed up coaches.. Thankfully at least the Eagles arent afraid to give some fresh blood a chance
    ..
If Im the Owner of the Bengals, while I still have a great roster in place, I would make a coaching switch and hope that the fresh voice can get the roster over the hump, sort of like when Tony Dungy took over and got that roster over the hump…. If Marvin Lewis HASNT even come close to getting it done by now, not sure why the owner thinks he ever will. He is a veteran coach set in ways that clearly haven’t been championship caliber,,. 309. 309 unhinged said at 5:07 PM on September 18th, 2016:

The Giants are kind of lucky that they broke in their new D against Romo-less Cowboys, and they barely pulled that game out. And where Drew Brees slapped Oakland with 400+ yards in the air last week, they ran for less than 90 yds. So NY invited NO to beat them on the ground, took Brees out of his comfort zone and Sean Payton could not respond. I expect NY to take the same approach to Washington next week. But Jay Gruden is another matchup guy and he’ll be going up against a division rival, so I expect him to have more than Payton did. Division games are always worth watching

  310. 310 Bert's Bells said at 5:25 PM on September 18th, 2016:

  311. 311 unhinged said at 5:34 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Maybe. They gave up a lot of points at home to Oakland, and then tightened up @ NY. When they had that bizarre home/away pattern wasn’t it their defense just stinking it up? Rams beating seattle 6-3 at half time,,, the Rams Offense has to be the worse unit in the entire NFL. I don’t think any team has an offense or defense more pathetic than the Rams. They are extending Fisher for 3 more years which means Goeff doesnt even stand a chance if they are going to waste the first 4 years of his career(which are crucial for QB development) under Jeff Fisher…
    ..
If that’s not bad enough, they inexplicably gave a crazy contract extension to a WR who can only catch screens…
    .,

Luck needs both though. You can see some really good QB skills with him, but he has not elevated anyone else’s game it would seem. It’s also quite possible the coaching staff isn’t all that great. Some of being great is situational — the combination with the coach and other players. It is not working for Indy, and they have had several years with Luck to try and fix that.

  332. 332 bill said at 9:39 PM on September 18th, 2016:

This is comparing a donkey to a racehorse. Luck is inconsistent because he has to carry his team and is not quite up to it. Eli is just a decent, kind of mediocre QB who gets on some hot streaks. He has never produced at Luck’s level, and when he won, his teams did the heavy lifting.

  341. 341 Dave said at 8:24 PM on September 18th, 2016:

  352. 352 FairOaks said at 8:30 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Eh, I think he was pretty good the last half of the season. First impressions had already been made though, as he was awful to start the year. With Minnesota’s defense, he could easily be good enough for them to win — he just has to not make big mistakes. Not sure that Bridgewater threw deep all that much either so they may be OK with Bradford’s biggest weakness.

  353. 353 Bert's Bells said at 8:33 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Kempski has convinced me with comparative and contextual stats. Even at his best at the end of the season he was still below average.

  354. 354 FairOaks said at 8:43 PM on September 18th, 2016:

He hasn’t quite for me. There are other QBs who have a hot stretch to start the season then fade — he was comparing against a lot of those. Bradford was getting better the whole year. Thought his best game was in the loss to the Cardinals — that was a good defense and he did very well against them.

Pretty much been the story of his whole career — he really hasn’t spent two consecutive years in the same offensive system. There is no QB who could be great in those circumstances.

The downfield throwing, while much improved at the end of the year, was still a concern — it’s possible that playing for the Rams permanently killed that instinct. But he really deserves the chance to play in a system for a while (and doubt he’s going to get it in Minnesota either). But it will be the best team he’s played on.

  355. 355 Bert's Bells said at 9:03 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Fair enough. I just can’t get behind a guy who always has an excuse for mediocrity, especially a silver spooned #1 pick.

  357. 357 Bert's Bells said at 9:13 PM on September 18th, 2016:

I don’t buy that excuse. If you’re good at your job and go to another company, you don’t need years to understand their system.

    It’s not that complicated.

  358. 358 Cafone said at 9:21 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Carson Wentz seems to have handled it pretty quickly.

  359. 359 Bert's Bells said at 9:27 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Brees went from Shottenheimer to Payton and tore it up.

  360. 360 FairOaks said at 9:33 PM on September 18th, 2016:

It was his fourth year under Shottenheimer before he was really good. And he was for two years there. Once he got that stability and growth, yes, he could then go into another system and still be good — which he was, with a pretty stable environment in New Orleans. Those first years can be critical though.

  361. 361 FairOaks said at 9:29 PM on September 18th, 2016:

NFL offenses are. Can you name another QB recently who was great from the get-go? I mean, he really hasn’t had *two seasons* in a row. Other than 7 games, where he had his best stats, before his first ACL. At this point, it’s probably permanently limited his potential, but he’s never really had a chance.

I’m not saying he’s Dan Marino, but he could easily get to be a top 10 QB.

It’s quite possible Wentz is better, of course. There are certainly some raw skills there that Bradford does not have, and perhaps some intangibles too. Way too early to say — even if he has an RGIII season it may still be too early. I’m not at all disappointed at the trade, but I have no grudge against Bradford and would like to see him do well.

  362. 362 Bert's Bells said at 9:44 PM on September 18th, 2016:

Nah, he can’t be a top 10 QB. He is who he is.

He COULD have been, but we don’t have a time machine. He has a track record, not potential. That track record shows he’s firmly planted at a top 19-13 QB. He’s fine. If he had the luck of Eli Manning he’d be a Hall of Famer.

Plus, the more he loses -the better for the Eagles.
