Sam Bradford Traded

In the biggest wow move of the year…

Wow.

The 2016 season just got pretty weird, huh?

The benefit is that the Eagles now have moved a huge contract off the books and they added a 1st round pick.

Now the Eagles are looking at a season with Chase Daniel as the starter. There will be speculation about Carson Wentz, but the rookie only threw a handful of passes this preseason. I don’t think you go with him right now.

The Eagles will now be in the market for a 3rd QB.  I don’t think McLeod Bethel-Thompson will be that guy. He feels more like a camp body and extreme project. The Chiefs just cut Aaron Murray, who Doug Pederson worked with for a couple of years. The Chiefs also have to make a decision on rookie Kevin Hogan or Tyler Bray for their 3rd QB spot. The Eagles liked Hogan in the pre-draft process. Pederson worked with Bray in KC so both could be of interest.

This could be a very interesting day.

The entire season just changed. Great job to get a 1st round pick for an average QB who has been injury prone. The 1 downside IMHO is that we will now not have as good a chance to win the NFC East, Then again everyone thought we were a 7-8 win team anyway. So if you are ok with this being just a learning season for Wentz then this is the right move as we were planning to trade SB after the season hoping he stayed healthy and played well. PS- I guess whether or not Paul Turner makes this roster today is no longer a huge story. LOL

This will unsettle some in the locker room in my opinion. The value though is fantastic. I’d feel better if Mister Daniel had looked more comfortable upto this point.

  9. 9 GermanEagle said at 10:56 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I doubt it would affect the locker room much. Especially since Sammy pulled that holdout this off season.

Hallelujah!!! I know Sam looked pretty good this summer, but frankly that’s fool’s gold. A decent summer doesn’t make up for a career of mediocrity. Yes, this means the Eagles will be slightly worse this season, but honestly, I’m not convinced the drop off is as big as people think. It also ensures Wentz gets on the field sooner. Not immediately, but certainly this year now. Honestly think the team will be better with a rookie Wentz ultimately starting than Bradford by the end of the year.

  15. 15 DarthBanner said at 11:06 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Maybe. But going from “wentz is going to sit this year like a redshirt freshman” to “wentz will definitely be starting soon” despite missing almost all of preseason doesn’t sound like the best recipe for success. Hopefully it is. Just doesn’t really pass the smell test.

  16. 16 P_P_K said at 11:10 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I’m guessing the FO figured this would be a shot at dealing with a desperate team, the Vikings, and maximizing Sam’s trade value. It sucks for developing Wentz, though, he’s not anywhere near ready.

  17. 17 DarthBanner said at 11:15 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, Eagles needed a first, bradford was probably their only shot at getting it, and Howie did a good job. Just concerned about Wentz’s development, as if that doesn’t work oit the franchise is in deep trouble.

  18. 18 P_P_K said at 11:20 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I am right with you. Probably no other opportunity to get so much for Sam. With so much riding on Carson, the team better get this right.

  19. 19 Jarock said at 11:18 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Thought Wentz looked raw but promising in his only playing time. Real question is can he improve his accuracy and mechanics. Love his toughness and athleticism. Learning the playbook will come and faster this way.

  20. 20 P_P_K said at 11:19 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I agree, but the pre-season would have been the time to learn. It will be interesting to see how soon he starts and how he holds up to this trial by fire.

  21. 21 Jarock said at 11:22 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Yeah, the injury sucked. Think fans would be even happier had Wentz played more.

  22. 22 P_P_K said at 11:24 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Coaches would probably be a lot happier, too. It’s a tough call now. At what point does Wentz start taking snaps with the starting O in practice?

  23. 23 Jarock said at 11:27 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I’d start getting him reps immediately. Daniels is a stopgap and even the players know that. Wentz may actually give them a better chance now.

  24. 24 P_P_K said at 11:56 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

If he was healthy and played the pre-season, I’d throw him into the fire. Right now, I’m thinking Chase plays the first three games while Carson heals and preps. Week four is the bye, then start Wentz on week six against the Lions.

  25. 25 ac134spectre said at 11:21 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  28. 28 Dude said at 11:01 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  29. 29 Jarock said at 11:02 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

He’s wrong, but I understand the concern.

  30. 30 DarthBanner said at 11:04 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

How so? Our not good offense just got a lot worse anyway you slice it, and that defense is going to be on the field a lot. I mean, they weren’t winning anything anyway and it was a good haul, but this season just got grimmer.

  31. 31 stephenstempo said at 11:06 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

did they get a lot worse? Maybe it’s just me but I didn’t have a lot of faith in captain checkdown to really be moving those chains at a breakneck pace. Not saying you’re wrong but I don’t think we’re all of the sudden a 3 win team. Weak division +talented D and good special teams I think gets us at least 5 wins we get lucky a couple of times and we’re at 7. Now 7 isn’t great or good but it’s not a “worst 5 teams in the league” bad.

  32. 32 DarthBanner said at 11:07 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Sure, 7 wins isn’t. But a lot of ifs to get to 7 wins.

  33. 33 Insomniac said at 11:11 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

It already was a bunch of ifs in the first place. Now I get that it’ll suck watching Chase Daniel stink up the joint but we’re rebuilding the team around Wentz now.

do you remember the mark sanchez games last year?

  35. 35 Jarock said at 11:10 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Honestly, they were the games the defense melted down. Mark was bad, but Sleeves wouldn’t have been any better.

  36. 36 Jarock said at 11:09 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

We weren’t winning anything with captain checkdown leading the offense. Daniels is worse than Sam, but not to the degree where it’s 3 or more games worse. If they start Wentz in week 1 (don’t think they will) the offense would actually be more dynamic but more turnover prone. Since Wentz is ultimately who’s going to be starting next year anyways, I’m thrilled with the move.

did you watch the 4th preseason game?

  38. 38 Jarock said at 11:11 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Yes. Daniels had two awful picks playing with a bunch of receivers who aren’t making the team behind the backups of a line with very little depth. Don’t mistake that performace as Daniel’s ceiling.

  39. 39 anon said at 11:17 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

did you watch the third preseason game?

did you watch the second preseason game?

did you watch the first preseason game?

  40. 40 Gary Barnes said at 11:18 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

More like have you seen Daniel’s entire career? The guy has done nothing at this level and been very mediocre in the chances he’s gotten. Bradford has his flaws, but he is light years better than Daniels at QB and the drop off will be evident. Again, I’m fine with this move and agree it is the best thing to do for the longer term, but to say we’ll be fine at QB with Daniels and a rookie in Wentz is green colored thinking to say the least.

  41. 41 Rellihcs said at 12:03 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

So playing in a 4th PRESEASON game behind backup ol with back weapons v. backups tells you something about regular season performance? If that’s your logic, then last year sammy v. greenbay means everything – and more.

  45. 45 Greg Richards said at 11:08 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

The Eagles have already traded the pick and won’t get it if they finish 0-16 or 16-0. It’s already a sunk cost so how Cleveland benefits doesn’t really matter to them.

  46. 46 ac134spectre said at 11:23 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Honestly, how much worse than Bradford could he be? Bradford could make big throws but seemed never to pull the trigger or see the field.

Have to lol at Sam too. He went from a team where he’s the clear cut starter this year, but has no long term security to a team that’s readier to win, but already has a young QB they believe in. He’ll have to play out of his mind (and we all know that’s not happening) if he wants to stay the starter in Minnesota.

    I wouldn’t give 7 M&Ms for him, let alone a draft pick!

  66. 66 xeynon said at 11:08 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

This was a Sam Hinkie-style long game move. Howie took advantage of another team stuck in an extreme short-term mindset to extract an outsized return for a guy whose departure will likely cost a few wins this season but who is not part of the long-term future.

Have to like this. This was likely a rebuilding year anyway, and I think ultimately we’re better set for down the road going 4-12 with Daniel starting and Wentz seeing more action as the season goes along, a la Pederson and McNabb in 1999, than we would’ve been going 7-9 or 8-8 with Bradford at the helm. Plus we recouped some of the resources we had to give up to get Wentz. Well done Howie.

  67. 67 stephenstempo said at 11:11 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I still don’t see 4-12. Maybe i’m being overly optimistic. I think 5 wins is the floor with an 8 win ceiling. The Bradford thing doesn’t change it much for me.

  68. 68 P_P_K said at 11:12 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  69. 69 xeynon said at 11:20 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I hear ya’, but honestly I think I’ll get as much or more gratification out of a season in which we’re bad but in which Wentz gets his feet wet and visibly starts to develop than I will out of a season in which we’re mediocre with Bradford starting and Wentz nailed to the bench.

  72. 72 Jarock said at 11:24 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Wentz has one crucial element I’m not convinced Goff possesses. Toughness. Watched him stare down how many hits in that game to hang in and try to deliver the ball? Goff looks skittish and frankly, that’s not fixable.

  73. 73 Dude said at 11:39 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

There was a part on Hard Knocks where Goff talks about an offensive player fighting a defensive player. He jumped in to help his boy until he saw the whole defense coming at him, then he bailed left his boy on his own. I don’t think Wentz would bail like that.

  74. 74 xeynon said at 11:40 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Could Wentz be a bust? Of course. But that would be true regardless of whether Bradford is here or not, and we’d be screwed either way. I’d rather find out. Bradford was not the future.

  75. 75 P_P_K said at 11:22 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  77. 77 Gary Barnes said at 11:09 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I think it is the right move, the “better for the team” move long term, but you’ve got to imagine right now some of the players are miffed that the season is being punted.

Daniels sucks and we’re going to grow through Wentz over at last half the season. I’m fine with that as a fan, but some of the players have to be scratching their heads.

I always thought the “we’re going to compete” line for this season was phony and this proves it beyond any doubt, but I do think again this is the best move for the organization.

I can’t believe they did this,.. No one would ever have thought we could get a first and a 4th for SAM, so the value is fantastic, but it’s hard to be excited about Value when we just pissed away the entire season, conceding such a wide open division right when I’m finally beginning to get excited about the season starting..
    ..
If HOwie and Doug think fans are going to sit back and support friggin Chase Daniel for half a season. They have another thing coming to them. fans are going to make it very uncomfrtable for Chase. Get used to constant “We Want Wentz” chants and booing every time the offense is on the field with Chase.
    ..
I feel bad for SAM, and the veteran playërs, On one hand, we were NEVER going to get THIS much value for SAM if we didn’t take this trade, on the other hand it is starting to look like a clown show at Novacare, we just wasted an entire summer preparing Bradford, and the week before the season starts. You pull the rug out from under the veterans like this? I hope this move DOESNT hurt our moral and lockerroom too much..
    ..
SAM can’t catch a break. He asked for a trade because he didn’t want to be a lame duck, and now he gets traded to Teddy’s team..

Hopefully the Eagles don’t waste too much of our time with Chase, it’s one thing to give away the division so that we can łet our young investment develope thru experience, but I can’t stomach giving away the divisipn to watch Chase Daniel for half a season
    ..
If anyone needs Eagles tix, I’ll gladly sell mine for every game that Wentz isn’t starting… ENDZONE seats $220 face value…

  85. 85 Greg Richards said at 11:20 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  86. 86 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:41 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Yes that’s understood. Realistically this was Rosemans only chance to get THIS type of value for SAM, so you certainly have to understand it fron a front office stand poïnt, but as a paying season ticket holder, I was literally just beginning to get excited about the season, and The Saturday before the season starts, we go from competing for a wide open division, to now becoming the Rams of the NFC East
    ..
I can Live with paying good money to see Wentz develope, but its no fun for paying customers to have To watch Chase Daniel for 4 home games. Hopefully Wentz plays much sooner than expected

The value is fantastic, but Its hard to get too excited about future value right when the season is starting. Im kicking myself at not selling my season tickets for september and October when I had the chance. I’ll be surprised if I can still get rid of them all
    ..
A non Super Bowl contender can’t turn down that type of value for a lame duck. I know that, I understand that, and I can’t blame Howie, but as a paying customer, this is a real damper to my excitement for the start of the season..
    ..
But I can live with it as long as they don’t ask us to watch more than 4 games of Chase Daniel… This is the type of move that stings now, but that I’ll be thrilled about after the season

Per source, the 2018 fourth-round pick that the Eagles get can become a 3 or even a 2. Triggers based on Vikings team success with Bradford.

Howie held up the Vikings’ GM in a dark alley. Although I guess, logically speaking, if the Vikings do well enough to upgrade that 2018 4th to a 3rd or 2nd that means the 2017 1st will be lower in the round.

  114. 114 Jarock said at 11:33 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Seriously doubt we can expect that much success for Sleeves, but still, great job by Howie.

  115. 115 truehaynes said at 11:47 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

That’s amazing! If the Vikings flounder this year with Sammy we get a higher 1st round pick. If they do well it escalates the later pick to make up for the loss in value if the 1st. Win win.

  116. 116 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:49 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

That really is amazing value. Regardkess how anyone feels about this, we do have to acknowledge that HOWIE would never be able to get this type of value again if he passed up this opportunity
    ..
Hopefully this doesnt lead to half a season of Chase Danel

  117. 117 unhinged said at 11:27 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

About young, green QB’s it has been stated and repeated by coaches and others that a good prospect can be “ruined” by starting him too soon. This could be an interesting case study. Will the franchise cave to fans and media pressure, or will it endure the frustration of veteran starters, the disgusting record and the anticipated ineptitude? The safe move is to lay low and ignore the noise, because if Wentz is put in too early and flounders, this experiment could blow up.

  118. 118 Gary Barnes said at 11:28 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Sam Bradford is our starting QB in 2016……uh, until we can trade him that is!

Good work by Roseman – said the right things publicly while working behind the scenes to achieve his real goal.

He also positioned the team well to take advantage of a situation like this without throwing Wentz completely to the wolves.

Daniels can be the nail until they are convinced Wentz is healthy/ready.

Pederson in essence gets a pass this season since his starting QB got traded 8 days before the season began and he had to work in a rookie.

Eagles get their 1st rd pick back

  119. 119 unhinged said at 11:34 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I expect HR to say that this was an offer that could not be ignored, but “we weren’t actively looking to move Sam”. And I would buy that, because this move could easily tank this season, and that is not a small matter.

  120. 120 Gary Barnes said at 11:44 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Oh I agree that is what he would say, but disagree it is the truth.

I think Roseman extended Bradford with the clear idea of wanting to cash him in for value as soon as he could.

The bad allocation at the QB position for a known cap guru was one signal. The signing of Daniels was another and then the multiple move ups and drafting of Wentz nailed it home IMO.

The problem is Bradford freaked out about Wentz, the talks with Denver failed and then no other team had enough of a need to meet the Eagles price. So Roseman had to be patient and wait, continuing to state publicly Bradford was their guy and the team was aiming to compete in 2016, blah, blah, blah.

Roseman almost lost the gamble, but Bridgewater went down and MN needed a replacement for now and possibly for the future. They were open to Bradford and the Eagles price. And here we are. Roseman may be celebrating and he should, but mostly I think he is greatly relieved because he almost got stuck in his own trap.

  121. 121 FairOaks said at 12:04 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

I think his goal was to trade Bradford next offseason. No way no how do you plan on a Bridgewater getting injured and expecting to get a 1st round pick in return this offseason. If a team offered that earlier, Bradford would have been gone. Vikings wanted to save their season; Eagles didn’t mind sacrificing theirs. Opportunity knocked.

  122. 122 Gary Barnes said at 12:23 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

You may very well be right, we’ll never know.

However, almost every off-season/TC/preseason sees QB going down to injury. It is not that much of a stretch to believe you could get a chance to leverage another team who lost their QB.

Plus why would he then sign Daniel to that large contract if Bradford was his guy 100%? It makes zero sense to invest $60M at the QB position in guaranteed money and keep all of them. Especially for an experienced and smart cap guy like Roseman.

Plus he already knew Denver needed one due to Manning’s retirement and the backup signing with Houston. Those talks were pushed aggressively by the Eagles, but Elway refused to blink since his team was the defending champion and thus did not need to chase.

I think he wanted to trade Bradford earlier in the off-season, but then had to be patient. Would he have waited until next off-season to trade him if he had to? Of course, but he wanted it done this off-season because he wanted to use Daniel as the bridge to Wentz THIS season. If he has to wait until next off-season, they lose all that time and opportunity.

  129. 129 Greg Richards said at 11:37 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Yes, but I think that’s about just as much changing what you tell people the plan is versus what the plan was all along.

  130. 130 Jarock said at 11:39 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

If they start him, I’ll admit I was wrong to believe them. I was convinced they planned to sit him for at least 1/2 the season to give him time to grow. Either he’s lighting it up in practice or this is about Chase’s two really bad pre-season games.

  131. 131 Greg Richards said at 11:46 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I think Howie was all about drafting a franchise QB from get-go and was never sold on Bradford. Lurie was leery about ability of Howie to actually trade all the way up to one of the top spots(where most top QBs go) and insisted they re-sign Bradford in case they failed in attempts to trade up. But even after re-signing Bradford, Howie knew he wasn’t in the long-term plans. That explains the signing of Daniel as a potential short-term starter, long-term backup and mentor for young QB. Howie’s intent all along, especially after moving up for Wentz, was then to trade Bradford. The only question was timing. Bridgewater’s injury gave him chance to make move now, versus a year from now. Declaration of Bradford as starer now was more about increasing his trade value for next season than Wentz’s readiness or a desire to groom him.

  132. 132 Jarock said at 11:48 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I can 100% buy that. Still thought they were going to start Daniels for at least the first 1/4 of the season minimum. The tweets flying around from Mclane and co. about Wentz starting from day 1 is what has me shocked.

  133. 133 Greg Richards said at 12:01 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

I don’t buy that, especially with him just recovering from the cracked rib. It makes more sense to me to start Chase the first 3 games and then use the bye week to make the switch.

I hope they will not be that stupid. If true, then why did you sign Daniels at all and give him such a big contract? It makes no sense. Play Daniels until Wentz is ready. Wentz has not had enough reps this off-season/TC, he needs to get healthy and practice more.

  139. 139 Gary Barnes said at 11:35 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

Report on WIP (listening to Ray Diddy who is shocked by this move, lol) is that Tom Condon, Bradford’s agent, may have initiated this process – fascinating

  140. 140 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:47 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

WTF? That would be really odd for Sam’s agent to want him traded the week before the season to join anotjher team putting SAM in a similar Lame Duck situation, unless Teddy is in serious risk of not being ready to play in 2017..

Hopefully Bradford and his agent are happy about this. It would be better than us pissing off an agent. Ideally they are completely on board with this trade

  141. 141 Gary Barnes said at 11:51 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

I know players are more delusional than fans (they have to be, otherwise why would players for teams that suck even bother to show up), but objectively, winning the division was the ceiling with Bradford. It’s still the ceiling with Wentz, but the long term benefits are much, much higher.

I’m…. not sure. I think this really sabotages this season. I was looking forward to watching the defense, but I’m not sure we’ll have enough offense now. I sorta liked Bradford (better if he would start throwing downfield more), and I think he was plenty good enough to win with a really good defense.

On the other hand, next offseason was shaping up to be really weird, with the contract situations and Wentz, and lack of a first round pick. This recoups a lot of what we gave up to get Wentz, and helps the salary cap next year tremendously. Long term it makes sense. This season… dunno. Not sure I want to throw Wentz out there with a Lane Johnson-less OL, and have little faith in Chase Daniels. But he’s going to earn his money now.

  166. 166 D3FB said at 12:02 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Ehhhhh one thing no one talks about is Bradford was one hit from us being in this exact situation for this season except he wouldn’t have been tradeable in the offseason.

I think we have a similar ceiling this season even if it’s less likely. It was always going to be about ball control and efficency on offense and playing D.

  167. 167 FairOaks said at 12:06 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Well sure. And we are now one hit on Wentz away from being a dumpster fire on offense.

I think Howie was hoping to trade Bradford after the season for sure, but this was an offer he could not ignore — fixes too many long-term problems.

  168. 168 P_P_K said at 12:09 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

I agree, it would have been foolish to pass up this one opportunity to get serious value for Sam. Most likely, he gets hurt or has a mediocre year. Then the Eagles, if they can trade him settle for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Still, I think Chase or Carson are a significant drop-off and make it less likely the Eagles win the crappy NFC East.

I feel you but I will say this. I am looking more forward to this season now than I was before. Win or lose. I prefer wild unpredictability to the boring mediocrity I was presented with before.

I was resigned to the fact that this season was going to be boring. I was not looking forward to watching a QB go through the motions for most of the season and then get shipped next year. That is the definition of boring to me. Watching Bradford mediocre his way through another NFL season didn’t really move my meter much.

Now? Well sure maybe we win fewer games but at least there’s intrigue and at least I know for a fact that we are closer to Wentz than we were last night and to me that’s at least a little something to get excited about.

  171. 171 Julescat said at 11:46 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

  172. 172 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:53 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

You can’t really “tank” when you owe the Browns your first round pick
    ..
But we are now closer to the Rams, than we are to contending for this garbage division

  173. 173 stephenstempo said at 12:29 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Listen let’s be honest. Bradford is not the difference between tanking and not tanking. If we are going to be bad this season then we were going to be bad with or without sleeves at the helm. Bradford is a status quo QB as far as I can tell. To me that means that if you are a good team and you bring in Sam you will probably still be good. If you were bad and you bring in Sam you’re probably still bad. He is not the kind of player that moves the scales on your winning or losing in the NFL. This season was always going to come down to whether or not the D is for real and if Pederson is an actual NFL coach. If both those things come to fruition then I don’t think Bradford was going to make a huge difference.

  174. 174 ACViking said at 11:50 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

    – Roseman turns Foles + 2nd + 4th into a 1st + 4th (or better) + 5th

    – Bradford’s “magical” 7-game run convinced the Vikes he’s worth a 1st and 4th (or better)

  191. 191 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:59 AM on September 3rd, 2016:

This trade is like parents forcing their kids to eat vegetables. This trade won’t be much fun this season, but we can’t dispute that it’s very good for us long term

  197. 197 stephenstempo said at 12:24 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Based on? It takes a lot of incompetence and honestly just bad luck to have less than 3 wins. I see 5 wins as the floor assuming the offense isn’t a turnover factory. I’m maybe higher on this D and special teams than most. Look how the D and special teams literally made the last 2 Kelly seasons look decent. It wasn’t our offense winning those games. We’ll win 2-3 games in the division alone.

Well, there was certainly some dash of irony in my glass, but there’s no way to write this season off already after the Bradford trade.

  209. 209 Fufina said at 12:08 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

I just watched the entire thing in honor to the greatness of Howie. We solve all our 2017 cap constraints, so can look to spend in the RT or WR market – gain a 1st round pick so we can address WR/RB/RT and can start the process of blooding Wentz.

Doubt it will be a positive for the 2016 Eagles – but we were not going to be superbowl contenders so giving up on that is not an issue at all.

  210. 210 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:31 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

You might feel a little different if you had season tickets

  211. 211 Fufina said at 1:20 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Honestly i would rather watch Wentz develop than win 1-2 games more. Think Wentz gives you more big plays and a more impactful run game at the cost of 1-2 more picks a game and 5-6% lower completion rate.

  212. 212 Forthebirds said at 12:06 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

I believe Wentz can be a franchise QB but this trade means if he doesn’t become one we haven’t traded away the future for him.

  214. 214 Mitchell said at 12:07 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Has Howard established himself as the GM most astute in trade and draft pick acquisitions? I think so. Also even if he isnt THE BEST at talent evaluations, his mastery with contracts and resource allocation makes him a damn good GM in my book.

  215. 215 Fufina said at 12:10 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Agreed – and lets be honest he is a good at the actual mechanics of the draft, knowing value and other teams needs and making trades.

Just needs someone else to come and help with the building of a scouting staff and stacking the board correctly – hopefully the guy they got from the Ravens to be his righthand man in that role can do a good job.

  216. 216 Nick C said at 12:10 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

    Few thoughts on the trade:
Got great value for Bradford (first and conditional 4th that can be as high as a 2nd)
The timing is obscure: how will the vets respond? I know it’s their job to be professional but this has to really suck for the players in the locker room.
Thought we could win NFC East then you never know… unless defense is top 5, I don’t see that happening with Wentz
Chase Daniel is a god-awful-overpaid-coach (I hated his contract from 1st min)
We at least have a first round pick for the draft in Philly (albeit probably low)
Howie has almost completed the replenish of Chip Kelly
Keep Schwartz and Fipp around and I will ultimately be happy
Last but certainly not least, The draft picks are great. And Howie sure does take advantage of opportunities. But can Joe Douglas or some other execs make some 1st round picks now? Because trading Sam Bradford for Marcus Smith’s bastard child will be hard to swallow (Kind of like Marcus Smith’s baby mama should have done:))))

2nd favorite team: Whoever is playing the Cowboys
3rd favorite team: Whoever is playing the Vikings

    Any questions?

  223. 223 FairOaks said at 12:11 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

Partly but there haven’t been many cuts in NFL. Buffalo was only team who got to 53 yesterday which was weird. Some teams cut a few players.

Jimmy K. is speculating that the Eagles might go into the season with 2 QBs only (similar to almost half of the NFL teams).
If that’s the case a player like Paul Turner, Steve Means or Destiny who are on the bubble may make the final team instead.

I am actually fine with this I’d rather keep a skill player with potential than a 3rd qb who will never dress and if he does end up starting is the death knell for your season anyway.

  234. 234 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:30 PM on September 3rd, 2016:

It was so exciting to have Wentz without being in the position the Rams were in. We were set to compete for a wide open division while having the luxury of Redshirting our prized investment for a year. Personally I prefer letting your young QB learn on the bench for a year, but I don’t have the patience to sit thru 16 games of Chase…Is Chase Daniel even better than Case Keenum? if he is, probably isn’t THAT much better to be worth how much more he is making than Keenum
    ..
Like Everyone, im really surprised by the McLane news that Wentz may start week 1…. But When you look at our schedule, you could make a case that it’s better to let Wentz get his feet wet against poor Browns and Bears teams. September is probably the easiest month in our schedule, so maybe it’s better to just play Wentz from day one taking advantage of the sweet spot in the otherwise difficult schedule, instead of letting Chase play in September. And then throw Wentz into the fire for his first taste of action against one of our Rivals or tougher opponents
    ..
You probably won’t find a better chance to ease him in than facing the Browns and Bears defense..l wonder if that is factoring into their decision to leap frog Chase and roll with Wentz from day one?

We could end up seeing the Wentz Eagles vs the Bradford Vikings in late October..
    ..
I really thought we were in a perfect position to try and win this division with SAM, providing a rare opportunity to red shirt a top QB prospect. But I certaibly can’t say that we haven’t been compensqted very well to give up that great position we were in
    ..
This also makes next offseason Much easier than it would be had Bradford won this division.. Not having to watch Chase Daniel would sure make this much easier on fans.. Having to watch like 4 home games of Chase Daniel is not an easy Sacrafice for paying customers…. Staring Wentz right away would make this so much better, even tho I still think a redshirt season would have been great for him
