Birds Bash Bradford

Posted: October 23rd, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 152 Comments »

The Eagles won the game 21-10. They dominated the line of scrimmage.

Sam Bradford was sacked 6 times. FOX had him getting hit 19 times (and that was late in the game…don’t know final tally). Bradford was under almost constant pressure. He fumbled the ball 4 times, losing 2 of them. He was picked off once, and that was in the end zone. He finished the game 24-41-224 with 1 TD (in garbage time) and 1 INT. This was easily Bradford’s worst game of the year. That pick was his first of the season.

The Vikings averaged 3.4 yards per carry and ran for 93 yards. They were stuffed on 3rd/1 and 4th/1 inside the 10-yard line.

Carson Wentz wasn’t sacked. The Eagles ran for 101 yards (3.9 ypc).

The Eagles DL didn’t have a sack last week and struggled against the run. They played without Bennie Logan today, but you wouldn’t have known that. Connor Barwin had a key strip sack and probably played his best game of the year. Brandon Graham was a force off the edge. It looked to me like Vinny Curry got penetration on the 4th/1 run that got stuffed. Beau Allen was in on 3 tackles and recovered a fumble. I am disappointed that he didn’t run that back for a score. Fat Guy TDs are better than even homemade chocolate pudding.

I need to see the tape to really know how the OL played.

That is impressive, but I do need to see just how much help the coaches gave to Vaitai and the OL overall. Halapoulivaati Vaitai only got his name called a couple of times. He played better than last week. Might be going too far to say he had a good game, but I’m happy with the fact he showed progress. Stefen Wisniewski had to take over for Brandon Brooks at RG for a little while due to injury. Jason Peters got replaced by Matt Tobin for a lot of the 4th Qtr. Brooks came back into the game so he should be okay. Peters stood on the sideline and looked pretty calm, which leads me to think he’s probably okay.

Carson Wentz did not have a good game. He started slow, but did make some key plays to help the team win. He knows he forced some passes and is responsible for 2 INTs. Young QBs are going to make mistakes. You need them to take ownership and then work to correct them.

There was another bad moment late in the game with Ryan Mathews losing a fumble. It cost the Eagles 7 points, but more importantly it killed any confidence in giving him the ball late in games. Right now you have to trust rookie Wendell Smallwood more than Mathews.

Possibly the biggest play of the game came on STs. Minnesota went up 3-0 and then kicked off. Josh Huff caught the ball at the 2-yard line and then exploded up the field. He got good blocking and then ran through the pathetic tackle attempt by the kicker. 98-yard TD and The Linc really came alive. The Eagles led the rest of the game. The Vikings had barely trailed before today’s game. Their offense is not suited to playing from behind.

This really was an unusual game. The teams combined for 8 turnovers. There were a lot of strange moments. Just when one team appeared to be sitting pretty, the other team would make a huge play and steal the moment away. And then the very next play might be just the opposite. This was an ugly game. It is encouraging that the Eagles found a way to win. Their 3-0 start was mistake-free, good football. Today Wentz and his teammates overcame mistakes and made just enough plays to pull out the win.

There are no more undefeated teams this year as the Vikings fall to 5-1. The Eagles are now 4-2 and in 2nd place in the NFC East. They can regain the division lead if they beat Dallas next week. Enjoy the win over the Vikings for at least today. There will be plenty of time to hate Dallas between now and next Sunday night.

Eric Rowe started today. I think Heyward-Bey beat him on the TD. We can cuss about giving up on him but there are conditions on pick:

According to a source, the fourth-round pick will become a third-round pick if Rowe plays in at least 50 percent of the Patriots defensive snaps either in 2016 or 2017, which feels like an attainable figure.

When Mathews fumbled the first time, I guessed that Pederson would give him a chance at redemption, earning himself loyalty in the process. I think after the second one, though, Mathews is going to have to build trust and earn his next chance at redemption.

Realistically, his Eagles career might not last long enough for that to happen.

Unless you think we are going to trade/cut him midseason (which I don’t see unless they can find another RB), I have a hard time seeing Matthews not at least get a few more carries again late in a game. Smallwood hopefully will start earning more playing time, but I haven’t seen enough of his pass protection to know that he is at a level you would feel comfortable leaving him in regularly late in games when the outcome isn’t yet certain. And while Sproles is good at pass protection, clearly the coaches don’t like to over use Sproles. Seems to me, Matthews will still get some late game carries, in part out a lack of other options, but that was a weakness we sort of knew going into the season.

  18. 18 xeynon said at 6:25 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

I expected the offense to struggle today. Every QB the Vikings have played this season has looked bad, including Rodgers, Newton, and Manning, so I’m neither surprised nor especially concerned Wentz struggled. The important thing was that he didn’t fold and came back to make some plays in the second half. The offensive line was also better than last week. Not every victory is going to be a work of art but this was a quality win against one of the better teams in the NFC and gets us back on track after two desultory losses. Now let’s beat the Cowturds and send them back toward their rightful place at the bottom of the division!

Anybody that is still wondering why Bradford isn’t in Philly any more (besides that big fat juicy 1st round pick we got) you only need to look at all the three yard passes he was throwing while they were trying to drive down the field from behind. Down three scores, you can’t run the dink and dunk and hope to come back (it’s great to take time off the clock when you’re ahead). As far as I can remember, he only threw deep one time – and it was incomplete.

  33. 33 anon said at 7:06 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

no time. 19 qb hits including 4 TOs and you want him to hang in the pocket and throw deep?

  34. 34 Dave said at 7:17 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

He was hit on 50% of his drop backs.

  35. 35 A_T_G said at 7:21 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

But Bradford was hanging in the pocket before throwing the checkdown.

It wasnt like he was throwing immediately off a three step drop. He was taking a full drop, bouncing a few time, then taking the check. There was time for guys to get 20 yards downfield, or to get behind the CB.

  36. 36 Dave said at 7:23 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

You would think after practicing against our corners and watching their film this season, he’d be throwing deep all day and just taking the PI penalties.

Pettella tendon connects your kneecap to tibia. Quad tendon connects quad muscle to top of patella. I’d imagine much better healing time compared to torn ligament

  64. 64 Mitchell said at 8:23 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Tendons and ligaments are generally made out of the same substance, collagen so I would offer, in general healing is relatively similar assuming all otjer factors are the same i.e. size of tissue, weight being bore, etc. An interesting note is that the quadriceps muscles tendons actually extend to the patella( quadriceps tendon) envelop the patella and extend to the tibia( patellar tendon). Tje patella just kind of floats above the knee.

Gamble is a snitch to reporters who leaks Chip-friendly BS and has zero talent evaluation skills. He’s only hired to stroke Chip’s “ego.”

  102. 102 Dave said at 8:04 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

He was hired as a favor so Chip would have a friend on the team, sort like when Dougie gave Chase Daniel all that money to help him coach Wentz.

  103. 103 holeplug said at 9:09 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

York will fire Baalke first and give Chip a year to improve

  104. 104 Cracker Ass Red said at 9:49 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Well, there are a couple of guys on the team that are under 6’4″…..

  105. 105 Tumtum said at 8:05 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Couldnt devote complete attention to the game today. From what I saw I am at least happy to see a decline in penalties. Still too many, but going the right direction. The tackling and defense was much inproved as I think we all expected. The only bright spot on offense were line play and Huff, right?

  106. 106 Dave said at 8:10 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Huff didn’t do much on offense. Had big kick return though.

  107. 107 Tumtum said at 11:37 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Had the best game of any skill position player I saw. Sure Sproles was in there late but he had 2 drops and a bad exchange which it seemed may be mostly on Wentz.

  108. 108 Dave said at 8:12 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

After just watching the Pats against the Steelers, Huff would flourish in a Julian Edelman/Wes Welker-type role.

  109. 109 Tumtum said at 11:35 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

As long as he keeps catching the ball that is. He is far better than those guys once he has the ball in his hands.

  110. 110 ChoTime said at 11:58 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Problem is he can’t catch. No hands. Has flippers.

  111. 111 Tumtum said at 1:39 PM on October 24th, 2016:

True, but he hasn’t dropped one yet this year. Don’t want to jinx it, not like he gets targeted a bunch though.

  112. 112 daveH said at 10:11 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

We folllowed evety turnover with a takewaway. . That was awesome

  113. 113 ChoTime said at 11:16 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Basically the Vikings have a shitty offense.

  114. 114 Sean Stott said at 8:18 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Bow down to the RNG god, RNGesus. He giveth fumbles, he taketh away interceptions, all praise

  115. 115 Media Mike said at 8:24 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

    RNG?

  116. 116 Sean Stott said at 8:27 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

yes random number generator. I harp on it a lot, but fans underestimate the effects of chance and randomness in every football game.

  120. 120 kajomo said at 8:35 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

I get the logic of wanting to have as many guys i coverage as possible, but it only works if you are getting pressure with 4. I really hope we continue to see Jim dial up the blitz.

  121. 121 P_P_K said at 10:29 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

    Thise were really creative blitzes.

  122. 122 Cafone said at 8:51 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Next week will present a much different challenge for the Eagles defense. I hope they are up to it.

  123. 123 P_P_K said at 10:29 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

We’ll probably see Zeke 10 or 12 times over the next bunch of years. Lets start this off right by crushing the young mans spirit. Oh yea, Dak, too.

  124. 124 Cafone said at 8:55 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

I disagree with Tommy that this was an ugly game. I thought it was a beautiful game. Once the Eagles had it locked down in the 4th quarter it got a little ugly, but up to that point I was loving it. Low scoring games are usually about inept offenses. I felt this game was about two great defenses.

  125. 125 Aaron said at 9:13 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

this was apenalty filled, turnover fest on both sides, meh

  126. 126 BlindChow said at 1:27 AM on October 24th, 2016:

The Vikings offense was pretty inept.

  127. 127 Cafone said at 1:35 AM on October 24th, 2016:

    They were dominated into ineptness.

A Momah sighting. First career catch.

  129. 129 A_T_G said at 10:04 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

That seems so hard to believe. You need to respect a guy that was willing to work for so long to reach that point.

  130. 130 RichEagle said at 10:10 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Didn’t look smooth but does appear to have bulked up.

  131. 131 Corry said at 10:10 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Yeah he almost looked more like a TE than a WR.

  132. 132 A_T_G said at 10:35 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

I think he is listed as a TE.

  133. 133 Corry said at 7:02 AM on October 24th, 2016:

That would explain why he looked like a TE.

  134. 134 wee2424 said at 10:48 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

He is a TE for them.

  135. 135 ChoTime said at 11:15 PM on October 23rd, 2016:

Kudos to him. It does go to show that #measurables isn’t the ideal way to measure a guy.

    Donovan getting clowned on SNF….

  137. 137 SteveH said at 12:03 AM on October 24th, 2016:

  140. 140 ChoTime said at 12:10 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Idiot kickers! I was really feeling bad for that Cards kicker.

  141. 141 SteveH said at 12:15 AM on October 24th, 2016:

People who didn’t stay up for the end of this one really missed out.

  142. 142 ChoTime said at 12:20 AM on October 24th, 2016:

It sort of reminded me of our game. Incompetence is the word that comes to mind, but I’m not sure if it’s really fair to talk about top professional athletes that way.

  143. 143 Ark87 said at 12:18 AM on October 24th, 2016:

To be fair, the kickers scored every point in the game. Bizarre game.

  144. 144 Rambo said at 12:37 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Think the Chiefs would trade Charles with Ware playing so well?

  145. 145 Insomniac said at 1:58 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Maybe but I wouldn’t want him on the team.

  146. 146 Rambo said at 11:51 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Better than Matthews by far IMO

  147. 147 HawaiianEagle said at 1:21 AM on October 24th, 2016:

After watching the game, all I keep thinking of is Kurt Russell playing Herb Brooks in Miracle and saying “we are going to shut them down because we can!”

  148. 148 BlindChow said at 1:40 AM on October 24th, 2016:

The best part of today’s game was Bradford playing like he was still with the Eagles. No pocket awareness, and when the game was on the line, he threw only to his closest checkdown. (In didn’t even matter that our corners sucked, they weren’t going to get tested by Bradford…)

I hate when players are mediocre with us, then go to another team and play lights out. This made me happy.

  150. 150 Anders said at 3:19 AM on October 24th, 2016:

  152. 152 Anders said at 4:13 AM on October 24th, 2016:
