Birds Bash Bradford
Posted: October 23rd, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 152 Comments »The Eagles won the game 21-10. They dominated the line of scrimmage.
Sam Bradford was sacked 6 times. FOX had him getting hit 19 times (and that was late in the game…don’t know final tally). Bradford was under almost constant pressure. He fumbled the ball 4 times, losing 2 of them. He was picked off once, and that was in the end zone. He finished the game 24-41-224 with 1 TD (in garbage time) and 1 INT. This was easily Bradford’s worst game of the year. That pick was his first of the season.
The Vikings averaged 3.4 yards per carry and ran for 93 yards. They were stuffed on 3rd/1 and 4th/1 inside the 10-yard line.
Carson Wentz wasn’t sacked. The Eagles ran for 101 yards (3.9 ypc).
The Eagles DL didn’t have a sack last week and struggled against the run. They played without Bennie Logan today, but you wouldn’t have known that. Connor Barwin had a key strip sack and probably played his best game of the year. Brandon Graham was a force off the edge. It looked to me like Vinny Curry got penetration on the 4th/1 run that got stuffed. Beau Allen was in on 3 tackles and recovered a fumble. I am disappointed that he didn’t run that back for a score. Fat Guy TDs are better than even homemade chocolate pudding.
I need to see the tape to really know how the OL played.
Vikings were averaging the most sacks per game (3.8). Eagles held Minnesota to 0.

That is impressive, but I do need to see just how much help the coaches gave to Vaitai and the OL overall. Halapoulivaati Vaitai only got his name called a couple of times. He played better than last week. Might be going too far to say he had a good game, but I’m happy with the fact he showed progress. Stefen Wisniewski had to take over for Brandon Brooks at RG for a little while due to injury. Jason Peters got replaced by Matt Tobin for a lot of the 4th Qtr. Brooks came back into the game so he should be okay. Peters stood on the sideline and looked pretty calm, which leads me to think he’s probably okay.
Carson Wentz did not have a good game. He started slow, but did make some key plays to help the team win. He knows he forced some passes and is responsible for 2 INTs. Young QBs are going to make mistakes. You need them to take ownership and then work to correct them.
There was another bad moment late in the game with Ryan Mathews losing a fumble. It cost the Eagles 7 points, but more importantly it killed any confidence in giving him the ball late in games. Right now you have to trust rookie Wendell Smallwood more than Mathews.
Possibly the biggest play of the game came on STs. Minnesota went up 3-0 and then kicked off. Josh Huff caught the ball at the 2-yard line and then exploded up the field. He got good blocking and then ran through the pathetic tackle attempt by the kicker. 98-yard TD and The Linc really came alive. The Eagles led the rest of the game. The Vikings had barely trailed before today’s game. Their offense is not suited to playing from behind.
This really was an unusual game. The teams combined for 8 turnovers. There were a lot of strange moments. Just when one team appeared to be sitting pretty, the other team would make a huge play and steal the moment away. And then the very next play might be just the opposite. This was an ugly game. It is encouraging that the Eagles found a way to win. Their 3-0 start was mistake-free, good football. Today Wentz and his teammates overcame mistakes and made just enough plays to pull out the win.
There are no more undefeated teams this year as the Vikings fall to 5-1. The Eagles are now 4-2 and in 2nd place in the NFC East. They can regain the division lead if they beat Dallas next week. Enjoy the win over the Vikings for at least today. There will be plenty of time to hate Dallas between now and next Sunday night.
_
Eric Rowe started today. I think Heyward-Bey beat him on the TD. We can cuss about giving up on him but there are conditions on pick:
According to a source, the fourth-round pick will become a third-round pick if Rowe plays in at least 50 percent of the Patriots defensive snaps either in 2016 or 2017, which feels like an attainable figure.
http://www.phillyvoice.com/eri…
That will come in handy IN 2YEARS when we actually get the pick.
Heyward Bey had him beat earlier too but Landry Jones underthrew him.

When Mathews fumbled the first time, I guessed that Pederson would give him a chance at redemption, earning himself loyalty in the process. I think after the second one, though, Mathews is going to have to build trust and earn his next chance at redemption.
Realistically, his Eagles career might not last long enough for that to happen.
Unless you think we are going to trade/cut him midseason (which I don’t see unless they can find another RB), I have a hard time seeing Matthews not at least get a few more carries again late in a game. Smallwood hopefully will start earning more playing time, but I haven’t seen enough of his pass protection to know that he is at a level you would feel comfortable leaving him in regularly late in games when the outcome isn’t yet certain. And while Sproles is good at pass protection, clearly the coaches don’t like to over use Sproles. Seems to me, Matthews will still get some late game carries, in part out a lack of other options, but that was a weakness we sort of knew going into the season.
Maybe, but to paraphrase a past president, “Fumble on me once, shame on you. Fumble on me twice, shame on…me…you…well, you came get fumbled on again.”
Bradford today:

He still has a bit of the boyish adorableness, even now. I can’t hate Sammy, I just needed us to crush him.
My son said he looks like a confused squirrel.
This really was an unusual game
Indeed indeed
Ho Go Eagles
Power through
Did I really write this ??
Im sofa king wasted…
What a crazy game. .ecstatic for the win..
Go All Eagles
Go All out Eagles! !
Sofa King Wasted!!!! LOL
It’s some form of poetry, right?
Busdweiset pooorertry yes
1000 comments during the the game.. 6 comments an hour later. . Please everyone drive carefully !!!!
Too busy watching the 49ers offense stink it up. After being reminded how little I miss Sammy Sleeves it’s nice to be similarly reminded how little I miss Chip Kelly.
I expected the offense to struggle today. Every QB the Vikings have played this season has looked bad, including Rodgers, Newton, and Manning, so I’m neither surprised nor especially concerned Wentz struggled. The important thing was that he didn’t fold and came back to make some plays in the second half. The offensive line was also better than last week. Not every victory is going to be a work of art but this was a quality win against one of the better teams in the NFC and gets us back on track after two desultory losses. Now let’s beat the Cowturds and send them back toward their rightful place at the bottom of the division!
I thought we were never going to win again though?

Maybe Swartz read all the comments, realized his defensive system stinks, and changed it before this game?
shame hows chargers played bosa – hes a beast
And WAS lost, woot!
No, no, no. Must start hating Dallas immediately, retroactively when possible. One week is not enough. I usually start 40+ years ahead of each game.
BEAT DALLAS!!!

Hating Dallas is one of life’s constants. Happens with every heartbeat. I think I was born hating them even though they didn’t exist then.
I would like to take credit for the Huff return for a TD. I’m sure he reads igglesblitz and had to use my bashful comment as motivation to do something big this week.
I wasn’t on Igglesblitz at the time, but I called that TD. Before the Vikings kicked off I told my wife that we were getting a kickoff return touchdown. She ignored me and asked what I was talking about when I was jumping around the room yelling “I called it!”
We all knew you weren’t Sleepy, Insomniac, but I never pictured you as Bashful… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7e32b2be866a0a6df7ad926e40e7648adcf4cf995e77f25c904e47537afd85f2.jpg
I SAW YOUR COMMENT! WELL DONE .. i cited this during the game. . My guess wasvl German
Anybody that is still wondering why Bradford isn’t in Philly any more (besides that big fat juicy 1st round pick we got) you only need to look at all the three yard passes he was throwing while they were trying to drive down the field from behind. Down three scores, you can’t run the dink and dunk and hope to come back (it’s great to take time off the clock when you’re ahead). As far as I can remember, he only threw deep one time – and it was incomplete.
no time. 19 qb hits including 4 TOs and you want him to hang in the pocket and throw deep?
He was hit on 50% of his drop backs.
But Bradford was hanging in the pocket before throwing the checkdown.
It wasnt like he was throwing immediately off a three step drop. He was taking a full drop, bouncing a few time, then taking the check. There was time for guys to get 20 yards downfield, or to get behind the CB.
You would think after practicing against our corners and watching their film this season, he’d be throwing deep all day and just taking the PI penalties.
His ass wasn’t even looking by that time in the game.
And what about the other 30 times he dropped back?
https://twitter.com/Beau_Allen/status/683761721798955011
Lol, Awnold
LOL
Beau Allen is quickly moving up my list of all-time favorite obscure Eagles.
Not so sure he is obscure. He is a big part of the game day defense.
25 years from now he’ll be one of those guys only hardcore fans remember – that’s my definition of obscure.
Oh so most guys. I figured you meant the Dan Klecko, Chris Maragos, Mike Hunt, Dion Lewis types.
That’s the type of guy I mean. Guys who start, even if they’re not great or memorable players, are a tier above.
Derek Landri or Beau Allen
I see your Derek Landri and raise you Sam Rayburn, Keyonta Marshall, and Paul Grasmanis. The Eagles have always had a gift for discovering rotational defensive tackle types who stick in my memory by being colorful and making plays in limited action.
I love the idea. . Give some of the names…
…dawkins (darryl), tocchett, brind amour, . . .
Eagles-wise I always liked Greg Lewis, Ike Reese, and Rod Hood. For the other teams:
76ers: Todd MacCulloch, Raja Bell, Dana Barros
Flyers: Vinny Prospal, Antero Niitymaki, Shjon Podein
Phillies: Kevin Stocker, Matt Stairs, Rheal Cormier
Hated hated hated GLew… loved Rod Hood.
Loved Charlie Garner
Darn i dont know any of those others .. and all my names are from long ago, which is scary to realise
That is classic.
Ron Brooks done for the year with a torn quad tendon.
damn — anyone know if wiz looked ok?
Ron the CB, you’re confusing him with Brandon the Guard.
that’s right, saw him leave with the leg brace, playing fast and loose w/ cb depth.
Anyone know how that recovery compares to ligament damage?
6-9 months, according to a doc on Twitter responding to the news
Yeah i saw a link to a doc that said 6 to 9
Great insight fuchk face
https://twitter.com/LesBowen/status/790329410029096962
Thanks. I wonder if that means plus a year of reduced ability, like a ligament injury usuallydoes.
Pettella tendon connects your kneecap to tibia. Quad tendon connects quad muscle to top of patella. I’d imagine much better healing time compared to torn ligament
Tendons and ligaments are generally made out of the same substance, collagen so I would offer, in general healing is relatively similar assuming all otjer factors are the same i.e. size of tissue, weight being bore, etc. An interesting note is that the quadriceps muscles tendons actually extend to the patella( quadriceps tendon) envelop the patella and extend to the tibia( patellar tendon). Tje patella just kind of floats above the knee.
Chao is the man.
Always was, always will be.
Oops
Where did all the birds 24 7 people go?
kempski’s site. they hate the new talent at birds 24/7
I wouldn’t call them talent, that infers skill.
Jeez…that hurts…if it means anything, i didnt notice they changed anything about the site
since shiel and tim left they replaced with BLG and no one really likes him – be interesting to see how they address that.
Ohhhh..i mean, i guess its deserved. Im not gonna act like i have any idea what he did to kill the site. I was only coming back for the commentary in the section….gave me the feels when i came back and everybody dipped.
Tim and Sheil were experienced reporters with great insight. Furthermore, Sheil was similar to Fran Duffy at the mother ship for breaking down film. Both were quality writers.
Josh is a young kid that interned under Tim and Sheil and is a recent graduate. BLG is a clickbait journalist. They both have a long way to go.
hope their getting $$ – gotta assume phillymag knew what they were getting when they hired blg
I believe Sheil and Tim founded the website and hired Josh and BLG. I might be wrong though.
I think they hired Paunil. I think Paunil then hired BLG when McManus left for ESPN.
I can’t imagine a kid out of college for 1 year had any hiring power.
I’d imagine he at least had some say. I’m not sure how much say McManus would have had while he was packing up to head to ESPN.
FYI, here is a little background reading if you weren’t following Sheil and Tim last summer.
https://web.archive.org/web/20150811205443/http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2015/08/10/passing-the-torch-at-birds-247/
BLG is like that poor kid who accidentally scored a goal on his own team for Argentina and then fans later took him out.
Untrue, talent is a scale which goes from “very talented” to “no-talent.”
Ohhh…thanks anon.
I had to stop posting there because Philly Mag banned my account due to anti Harry Gamble comments. There weren’t even any curses!
I cant say i know who harry gamble is…sounds petty
Harry Gamble was the collaborator GM who worked under Norman Braman who lost us Keith Jackson, Reggie White, Keith Byars, Seth Joyner, Eric Allen, Seth Joyner, and Clyde Simmons.
He’s the moral equivalent of the death row guard throwing the switch on the electric chair on an obviously innocent man.
Oooh…im woke…it seems more petty for them to block you for something so irrelevant. Informational, but history…idk what you said though…but all in all. I think you have won that battle. Not much to be banned from a site that doesnt exist
I was kicking massive amounts of dirt on his grave when he died. I was pointing out the nostalgia for a guy who was a horrible GM was misplaced.
Ohh…ive learned so much in the past 5 minutes..
Hmmm sounds like my attitude about see-ya-later time for 3 years of fat andy
Wow if they banned YOU for insights & knowlegde i am no longer reading them !
Media Mike is never petty. Oh, you’re talking about them.

Reub needs to stick with this stuff and interesting stats rather than defending losers like Kelce, McDermott, and both Gambles.
Boy did he pine for McDermott to be the coach over Dougie!
It was undignified, transparent, and obviously bad advice.
All his articles on the subject could be TL/DR as “Sean is my friend and the Eagles should hire him. If they don’t they are dumb and I am smarter than them. Did I mention Sean is my friend?”
Chip is 1-6 in San Fran. Anyone think he and Tom Gamble could be 1 and done after the season.
Yes.
not tom gamble’s fault, but chip clearly not nfl ready prospect.
Gamble is a snitch to reporters who leaks Chip-friendly BS and has zero talent evaluation skills. He’s only hired to stroke Chip’s “ego.”
He was hired as a favor so Chip would have a friend on the team, sort like when Dougie gave Chase Daniel all that money to help him coach Wentz.
York will fire Baalke first and give Chip a year to improve
Well, there are a couple of guys on the team that are under 6’4″…..
Couldnt devote complete attention to the game today. From what I saw I am at least happy to see a decline in penalties. Still too many, but going the right direction. The tackling and defense was much inproved as I think we all expected. The only bright spot on offense were line play and Huff, right?
Huff didn’t do much on offense. Had big kick return though.
Had the best game of any skill position player I saw. Sure Sproles was in there late but he had 2 drops and a bad exchange which it seemed may be mostly on Wentz.
After just watching the Pats against the Steelers, Huff would flourish in a Julian Edelman/Wes Welker-type role.
As long as he keeps catching the ball that is. He is far better than those guys once he has the ball in his hands.
Problem is he can’t catch. No hands. Has flippers.
True, but he hasn’t dropped one yet this year. Don’t want to jinx it, not like he gets targeted a bunch though.
We folllowed evety turnover with a takewaway. . That was awesome
Basically the Vikings have a shitty offense.
Bow down to the RNG god, RNGesus. He giveth fumbles, he taketh away interceptions, all praise
RNG?
yes random number generator. I harp on it a lot, but fans underestimate the effects of chance and randomness in every football game.

I dig it.. as far as i really understand it .. ..
Gamble online much?
I get the logic of wanting to have as many guys i coverage as possible, but it only works if you are getting pressure with 4. I really hope we continue to see Jim dial up the blitz.
Thise were really creative blitzes.
Next week will present a much different challenge for the Eagles defense. I hope they are up to it.
We’ll probably see Zeke 10 or 12 times over the next bunch of years. Lets start this off right by crushing the young mans spirit. Oh yea, Dak, too.
I disagree with Tommy that this was an ugly game. I thought it was a beautiful game. Once the Eagles had it locked down in the 4th quarter it got a little ugly, but up to that point I was loving it. Low scoring games are usually about inept offenses. I felt this game was about two great defenses.
this was apenalty filled, turnover fest on both sides, meh
The Vikings offense was pretty inept.
They were dominated into ineptness.
A Momah sighting. First career catch.
That seems so hard to believe. You need to respect a guy that was willing to work for so long to reach that point.
Didn’t look smooth but does appear to have bulked up.
Yeah he almost looked more like a TE than a WR.
I think he is listed as a TE.
That would explain why he looked like a TE.
He is a TE for them.
Kudos to him. It does go to show that #measurables isn’t the ideal way to measure a guy.
Donovan getting clowned on SNF….
This SNF is at peak bad football/high entertainment combo.
Just topped itself.
This game couldn’t get any better I don’t think.
Idiot kickers! I was really feeling bad for that Cards kicker.
People who didn’t stay up for the end of this one really missed out.
It sort of reminded me of our game. Incompetence is the word that comes to mind, but I’m not sure if it’s really fair to talk about top professional athletes that way.
To be fair, the kickers scored every point in the game. Bizarre game.
Think the Chiefs would trade Charles with Ware playing so well?
Maybe but I wouldn’t want him on the team.
Better than Matthews by far IMO
After watching the game, all I keep thinking of is Kurt Russell playing Herb Brooks in Miracle and saying “we are going to shut them down because we can!”
The best part of today’s game was Bradford playing like he was still with the Eagles. No pocket awareness, and when the game was on the line, he threw only to his closest checkdown. (In didn’t even matter that our corners sucked, they weren’t going to get tested by Bradford…)
I hate when players are mediocre with us, then go to another team and play lights out. This made me happy.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/10/23/trade-winds-blow-regarding-joe-thomas-again/
can we trade Agholor for a second?
I think we need to give the 2nd and Agholor to some team
How about Agholor for Thomas straight up?
Is it just me, but as Eagles fan favorite (including me) TJ Clemmings just been super bad for the Vikings this year?
