Halftime – CIN 19, PHI 0

Posted: December 4th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 333 Comments »

I thought this might be an ugly game, but I didn’t see the Bengals whipping the Eagles. Unfortunately that is exactly what’s happening.

Highlights so far today:

  • Trey Burton has 3 catches for 34 yards.
  • Nelson Agholor hasn’t dropped a pass.
  • The Cincy PK missed an extra point.

That should give you an idea how bad this performance is.

Doug Pederson better wake this team up in a big way or he is going to feel a level of heat he’s never imagined.

All the red flags are there concerning Pederson. Team constantly comes out unprepared. Team is undisciplined. Playcalling is poor. Decision making is questionable. The rookie QB has regressed despite the head coach being a former QB. The team plays like it doesn’t believe what Pederson is selling. Sure the team has talent issues, but none of these things are related to talent.

Now we see if they play for pride and show up in the 2nd half or just roll over.

Just noticed how little activity there is in the comments during the game. Only 200+ on the last thread. There is usually a lot more. Guessing people are wising up and actually doing something productive with their days instead of blowing it watching this piece of shit team.

Game last week killed a lot of interest in the season as the playoffs chances really diminished. It is also how they looked too.

Imagine their are going to be tons of empty seats the last 2 games vs Giants and Boys if they go into a spiral. That has happened a couple of times the last few seasons including last year and in Reid’s final year in ’12.

I went to the game vs Skins in ’12 and there was maybe a 70% fill rate at max with tons of empty seats in the upper levels at the Linc.

  22. 22 BobSmith77 said at 2:40 PM on December 4th, 2016:

If they do go into an absolute tailspin and finish the season on a real low note, it will be interesting to see who Lurie and Roseman sacrifice. It can’t be Pederson.

Likely they’ll make several of the position coaches fall on their swords. Lewis being a strong candidate.

  23. 23 scratcherk said at 2:42 PM on December 4th, 2016:

my guess is no one, and nor should they. can’t keep changing assistants due to a bad year, especially in a rebuilding year.

  24. 24 BobSmith77 said at 2:47 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This brings up an interesting point – Lurie and Roseman went out of their way to say this wasn’t a rebuilding year.

I thought that was a huge mistake at the point because it didn’t set fan expectations.

If Lurie had said after the Bradford trade, we are going to start Wentz week 1 and even if we experience some growing pains this year we are confident in the future with him and Pederson.

Didn’t do that though and after the 3-0 start the public expectations really got inflated.

I don’t think Lurie is a bad owner or that he is cheap/doesn’t want to win/etc. He generally has been a solid owner who doesn’t interfere.

Don’t think he is particularly savvy or smart though in some of the personnel decisions he has made over the years nor in how he speaks and handles the public/media.

Granted it is really hard to appease this fickle and schizophrenic fan base even when the team is winning but it generally has been a weakness of Lurie’s tenure here.

I’d trade ertz, nobody wants AG’s but he would be gone, sproles to a co tender even though I’d be sad to see him go and get this rebuild going

  151. 151 BobSmith77 said at 3:26 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  165. 165 sonofdman said at 3:35 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I’m still confused about that Bengal call. It was definitely helmet to helmet, but it was way after the receiver caught the ball and turned upfield and was trying to gain additional yards.

  166. 166 Kohlhaas said at 3:36 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, I don’t get it. Does defenseless receiver have to be helmet to helmet?

  174. 174 Flyineagle45 said at 3:40 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I’m sorry but wentz is overrated. I know he doesn’t have weapons but still idk if we got the right one. We should have got Zeke and Dak like I said way before the draft

  175. 175 meteorologist said at 3:41 PM on December 4th, 2016:

He has a huge burden on his shoulders. We can’t run the ball consistently and have number 5 WRs as our starters

  176. 176 scratcherk said at 3:42 PM on December 4th, 2016:

i doubt dak would be any better in this offense.

  177. 177 Kohlhaas said at 3:44 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Dak is a complete product of having a top 5 everything at his disposal. OL, RB and WR. He would be terrible on this team.

  178. 178 Flyineagle45 said at 3:50 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Idk man. Granted he has all thatbstuff, he still has “it”. We had Maclin, Jackson, Shady and a great oline and QBs that squandered it. I don’t think having all that makes you a good qb. I bet if we had him when we had a that he would outproduce all the QBs we had that played with those weapons.

  179. 179 Kohlhaas said at 3:54 PM on December 4th, 2016:

The OL is the most important part. I’ve watched about 8 cowboys games this year, and it is amazing how much time he has to throw. You give any QB that much time, he’s gonna give you something positive. If you add on to that a RB that averages a 100 yards a game, just gives you that much more. It is the perfect scenario for Dak.

  180. 180 BobSmith77 said at 4:01 PM on December 4th, 2016:

It is also Elliott. He is a damn stud and a dynamic dual threat.

  181. 181 Kohlhaas said at 3:40 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Essentially a garbage time TD but I suppose it’s welcome.

  182. 182 Dragon_Eagle said at 3:45 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Take this at least… they are not giving up and laying down. Still playing.

    And Agholor is showing something.

As I type that, its a game now.

  183. 183 Allen3000 said at 3:45 PM on December 4th, 2016:

How is that not a late hit or H2H???? Wtf??!

  184. 184 Kohlhaas said at 3:46 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    YEAHH!!!! FUMBLE

  185. 185 SteveH said at 3:46 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    No.

  188. 188 sonofdman said at 3:47 PM on December 4th, 2016:

But it would be funny if the turning point ends up being a stupid pass to an o-lineman

  189. 189 Kohlhaas said at 3:47 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Probably not but that brief moment of hope is nice.

  190. 190 scratcherk said at 3:48 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    HURRY UP!

  192. 192 Kohlhaas said at 3:50 PM on December 4th, 2016:

We traded Bradford. We don’t need 3 yard passes on 3rd down.

  193. 193 BobSmith77 said at 3:50 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Maraschino cherry on this turd sundae by Wentz today.

  194. 194 Kohlhaas said at 3:50 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, Wentz can go fuck himself.

  195. 195 SteveH said at 3:50 PM on December 4th, 2016:

We need more plays than little slants on 4th down.

  196. 196 Flyineagle45 said at 3:55 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Wentz is just not that good guys… There was a Tom of nut riding I’m the draft process etc but we picked the wrong one. Don’t be sheep he has shown very little that makes me confident he is the future. Yea he makes some good decisions thats fine but the negatives have def outweighed the positives.

  197. 197 sonofdman said at 3:56 PM on December 4th, 2016:

He’s had his shot. It is definitely time to give up on him.

  198. 198 scratcherk said at 3:56 PM on December 4th, 2016:

we could probably trade him for bradford.

  199. 199 sonofdman said at 3:57 PM on December 4th, 2016:

If Chip were still here, he would trade Wentz for Bradford and give the Vikings a second round pick in the draft.

  200. 200 Flyineagle45 said at 4:01 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Basically I’m just saying we prob won’t win a ring with this guy.

  201. 201 sonofdman said at 4:02 PM on December 4th, 2016:

We haven’t won a ring since 1960, and very few QBs (even good ones) win rings, so the chances are that you are right. But, it is way to early to come to any conclusions about a rookie QB and definitely way too early to give up on him.

  202. 202 BobSmith77 said at 4:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This is crazy talk. They sucked today and he played really poorly but saying what he’ll do over the next 5 years is nuts.

  203. 203 SteveH said at 4:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Stop being so dramatic.

  204. 204 Flyineagle45 said at 4:54 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Just being honest

  205. 205 BobSmith77 said at 3:56 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Terrible game by Wentz on a toothless offense. Chalk it up to a rookie QB and move on.

The poor decision-making is what is a bit more disturbing though. he could have 6 INTS today easily.

Got forced into a corner because of the big deficit they got put in early on and his lack of experience/decision-making really showed.

  206. 206 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I just hope we can move up in this draft and get a franchise QB or trade for Luck or Dalton.

  207. 207 sonofdman said at 4:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yep, Howie has to do what it takes to get a franchise QB.

  208. 208 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:35 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  211. 211 Mitchell said at 3:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

He looked pretty damn good against a decent Bengals secondary

  212. 212 BobSmith77 said at 3:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Catches the ball when thrown to him even in tight coverage. Shouldn’t be high praise but this group it is.

  213. 213 Kohlhaas said at 3:58 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Hoping Pederson gets roasted in the post game presser.

  214. 214 John Galt said at 3:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Well – Turner can catch

  215. 215 SteveH said at 3:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Turner another tough catch. IDK why he took so long to get on the field with all the bums we’ve had at WR…

  216. 216 Kohlhaas said at 4:01 PM on December 4th, 2016:

6 catches 79 yards. Turner has earned more PT.

  217. 217 SteveH said at 4:01 PM on December 4th, 2016:

The PT Cruiser is online. IDK what people were saying before about him, he looks plenty fast enough to me.

  218. 218 Kohlhaas said at 4:02 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, he must be the worst practice player in history. I don’t know what he’s doing in practice to keep him off the field.

  219. 219 BobSmith77 said at 4:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  227. 227 Kohlhaas said at 4:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  228. 228 scratcherk said at 4:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    oh we’re not close tho.

  229. 229 Kohlhaas said at 4:05 PM on December 4th, 2016:

not this year but this has the feel of an AR team and I don’t like it.

  230. 230 DarthBanner said at 4:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  234. 234 SteveH said at 4:05 PM on December 4th, 2016:

He’s trying to drop it in the bucket, but he’s sailing it.

  235. 235 BobSmith77 said at 4:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Wentz sucked all around today. The people who have been lurking about him are going to start to come out of the wood work.

His decision-making though was what was hard to watch today. Made a low of poorer decisions for the first time this year all game.

Got put behind the eight ball early on though by the defense though yet again. Any rookie QB throwing 60 times is going to have some bad throws.

  236. 236 Dave said at 4:23 PM on December 4th, 2016:

His confidence is shot. He needs an off season and some new lineman. I don’t want him turning into Luck getting hit every game.

  237. 237 Mr. Magee said at 5:49 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This is a big concern. So big, in fact, that I think it could justify his HC losing his job after only one season (I do not think that it will happen, however).

  238. 238 Dave said at 6:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    yep

  248. 248 SteveH said at 4:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, the defense allowed the Bengals to score on their first 6 drives, on offense we didn’t score a TD until late in the third quarter… We looked like a team that doesn’t deserve a playoff spot at all.

If you can’t keep your shit together on a 4th down pass and have to bail and just throw it up for grabs, then you probably won’t succeed as a QB for the Eagles long term.

  255. 255 sonofdman said at 4:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Pederson came out this week and said they were ‘rebuilding’ and that the last few weeks they were looking to see who wanted to be here.

It upset a few veterans but you certainly didn’t see this team respond at all today. They were dead flat the entire first half and didn’t show spark in the 2nd half like they have this season.

What are the odds we picked the right coach as well as the right QB in the same year? Signs point to unlikely. There would be a small chance that they’re both the correct pick but it’s a low percentage. I have more hope for Wentz at this point than Pederson. He seems too much like AR and that’s not a compliment.

  280. 280 Flyineagle45 said at 5:07 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Pretty sure AR was a good coach had some stupid faults but also needs players not to be bitches and throw up on the sideline and not win a Superbowl. AR should just relinquish decision making in certain situations. I bet if he was coaching right now we would be in position to go to the playoffs even with the hot garbage we have for players across the board.

  281. 281 Kohlhaas said at 5:14 PM on December 4th, 2016:

AR had a lot of success but couldn’t get the big one and that wasn’t good enough. I don’t want another era of “not quite good enough”.

  282. 282 unhinged said at 5:02 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Apart from our many flaws, I think the suitability of Doug Pederson for this franchise may not be an optimal fit. Jeff Lurie is an owner who wants his HC to leave his imprint on the franchise by exercising a wide degree influence, and taking all football matters under his wing. Sure there is a front office to offer support, but the vision, the protocol, the day-to-day decisions, and all of the ancillary issues are all on Doug. This is not how Pittsburgh or Dallas or Washington or the Giants conduct their franchises (to name a few), and while they may not be ideal environments in which to find oneself, there is a much more defined and much more cushioned role for the HC. This is not a reaction to a disappointing season, but just a rumination on the weight under which an Eagles HC must function. Garrett and Tomlin and Grudin and McAdoo are field generals, period. They are the faces of their franchises, but they are not the architects of those franchises’ practices and programs or the creators of those franchises’ brands. They most likely have some say, but all of the aforementioned have owners and FO’s with definite constrictions within which their hires are expected to operate. This has much to offer when relations are terminated.
Presumably, Lurie and HR will take whatever weight an HC requests of them, but the owner’s posture seems to be to let the HC go where he wants to go. That would leave a lot of room to fail, even for a veteran HC, and it could be terrifying for a rookie HC.

  288. 288 Insomniac said at 6:02 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  290. 290 Insomniac said at 6:13 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Curry has been a major disappointment. He was so disruptive and got a ton of pressure before. But Barwin has always been a coverage and effort sack guy when he was here.

  291. 291 Mr. Magee said at 5:40 PM on December 4th, 2016:

For may glass-is-half-full Eagles blitz friends…

The coaching situation is ugly and complicated. The HC and DC both appear to be insufficient, but making a change after only one year feels desperate… And more importantly, it exposes a lot of people, like Lurie and Rosenman. Dumping Dug and Schwartz actually looks like the right thing to do, but if you’re Lurie, since you can’t fire yourself, you probably have to fire Howie too and start over – again. The other option is staying with the status quo, keeping your fingers crossed and hoping that the coaching staff is visited by angels from above in the offseason.

Outside of putting the team up for sale, I think Lurie’s put himself between a rock and a hard place.

  292. 292 BobSmith77 said at 5:51 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Firing Pederson is completely reactionary and unproductive even if this season ends on a real sour note.

Even if they did, want desirable candidate wants to come here? They already had some issues with that last offseason.

What you might see is Lurie more moderate steps including pushing Pederson to give up the offensive playing call responsability and focus more on head coaching duties instead if the offense continues to look so poor and Wentz struggles down the stretch.

  293. 293 Media Mike said at 5:55 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  295. 295 Mr. Magee said at 6:49 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This might be the most practical thing to do, but if you’re gonna go that route you better find a way to insulate Wentz from the ensuing damage that comes from playing another year under Doug.

  296. 296 Media Mike said at 5:54 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This team needs the off-season BADLY.

    – Pederson needs to have a former head coach come in and mentor him for a few months. Pederson really needs to self-scout his decision making on play calling, kick/go decisions, challenges, the active roster, the 53 man roster, and the practice squad.

    – There are some dog ass dogs on this team who don’t play hard or continuely play with their heads up their asses. They need to be gone. So do the guys who are stealing money and don’t created a negative cap charge by trading/cutting.

    – There are some roster holes that Howie needs to keep plugging.

    – This team lacks any players who can really enforce professionalism, desire, focus, and overall correct ways of playing. I cannot overstate how the signings of Jon Runyon and Brian Mitchell helped instill a more winning attitude on this team to go with guys like Dawk. Malcolm Jenkins and Sproles can’t light fires under all of these lazy asses themselves.

Again, I’m not firing anybody off of this game or this season, but there are some straight up bums on this team and the last two weeks were complete lazy bum efforts. That needs to change.

  297. 297 BobSmith77 said at 5:54 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Pederson said several times it wasn’t an effort issue but he knows it was especially in the 1st half. This team rolled over late in the Packers game too despite what Pederson said in the post-game too. Joyner and even Didinger were taking about that Monday night after the game especially Joyner.

  298. 298 Media Mike said at 5:56 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Pederson is full of beans on that. Not only is there an obvious lack of effort, desire, and concern over winning games………..there is also a lack of those guys being identified. They need to be called out.

Puck drops soon for the Flyers. Hopefully they win, Simmonds beats somebody’s rear end, and Subban gets his disrespectful and overrated head smashed into the boards. I need to see the blood of the enemy all over.

  300. 300 Insomniac said at 6:00 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I’m all in favor for drafting back to back CBs with our 1st and 2nd round picks this year. I don’t have any two combinations in mind right now but enough is enough. McKelvin isn’t good. Carroll could stay but I want a guy with higher upside.

What about WRs? I hate to say it but I want to reserve judgement on DGB and Turner until Week 16. I’m in favor of trading for Brandin Cooks but I think he might be a product of Brees’s greatness. Wentz doesn’t have the deep ball accuracy and placement to really utilize him right now even if we get him. The same applies to Djax if we are truly interested in getting him back. We could use either guys for those WR screens but we don’t want that do we?

I hope Bennie isn’t looking for a fat contract. He’s a good stout run defender but we also had that in Thornton when he was here.

Trade Barwin to the Patriots or something. We’re not going to be contending next year and as much as I think it’ll suck for us, Barwin deserves to play for someone good.

  301. 301 Media Mike said at 6:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

The risk on CBs is that they don’t often play well year one, so we’ll nee to double temper expectations with that player.

All I know is whoever we pick next year will already be better than any guy in the same position on Dallas, NYG, and Washington. He’ll also be better than who they pick with their picks. And be much better than whoever the Rams take with our pick.

He’s not happy with his role right now if the rumors are true. They also don’t want to pay him since they don’t really have the cap space. They have two other guys that could pick up the slack in Michael Thomas and Willie Snead.

  309. 309 Mitchell said at 7:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

There would be bo complaints for me. If its a deep cb draft then why not? The skid marks out there starting now are just not good/talented/healthy enough. There has been the same problem for years, mediocre talent in the seconday with no high end impact.

  312. 312 DarthBanner said at 6:17 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Too many red flags already. The team is often unprepared to play. They are undisciplined. The offensive play calling is bad and predictable. The decision making is questionable. The players play as if they do not buy into what he’s doing. The eagles have talent problems, but none of those issues are talent related.

  313. 313 Media Mike said at 6:18 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  314. 314 Mr. Magee said at 6:45 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I think these are the key points. The one that I would add – which every NFL coach seems to possess in spades, unfortunately – is incredible stubbornness, unwillingness to admit mistakes and make necessary adjustments to personnel strengths/weaknesses in-season.

I don’t want him fired. Jim Schwartz is letting him down and they really lack talent on offense. That can change drastically next year and certainly in 2-3 years. Good QBs make coaches look good. Good QBs almost always have coaching stability. I think the continuity is extremely important for Carson’s developement. He need weapons around him more than a new coach
