Important Week Ahead

Posted: February 26th, 2017 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 130 Comments »

The NFL’s Scouting Combine starts on Tuesday. This is a big deal for a variety of reasons.

I wrote a piece for PE.com on why the Combine is so important.

If you want an actual preview of the Combine, Fran Duffy has been putting out great content. I’ll post a few thoughts of my own in the next few days. The actual workouts won’t start until Friday. Here is the schedule.

Indy will be crazy this week. You will have all 32 coaches, every GM/team executive and every agent in the book all together in one spot. There will be all kinds of talks, in regard to contracts, free agency and trades. The Eagles have a lot of talking to do.

They need to see if they can trade Mychal Kendricks, Jason Kelce and/or Connor Barwin.

They need to talk to Bennie Logan’s agent.

They should feel out the agents for the top WRs and CBs so they can start to make realistic plans for free agency.

There will also be a coin flip so we can find out if the Eagles will pick 14th or 15th. My free advice is to choose tails.

We already found out one bit of news this week.

So the Eagles now have:

1
2
3
4
4
5
6
7

That’s not exactly the haul of picks the Browns have, but it is a lot better than last year.

It will be great if the Eagles can add picks through trades, or at least use those players to move up in the draft. This is a deep, talented draft class. This would a good year to have as many picks as possible.

After much inner debate, I’m gonna go ahead and put Marlon Humphrey as a player the fan in me would be ok with the Eagles picking: -aggressive at the line of scrimmage both in press and in the run game.-has developed his skills at the P.O.C. from last season to this one. -plays against some of the toughest opponents in college football. -great instincts defending screens -has had success in both man and zone -great size at 6’1′ 200lbs -still a young fella (20 years!) so lots of room for growth even in the mobility and agility category -decent hip flexibility but overall good for his size -Doesn’t use the “crab” technique as much as I previously thought, much more of a traditional style -Due to his size and less than stellar him mobility/change of direction, I fear he will get beat by smaller/quicker receivers. -Did not get beat deep as much as I had expected. -aggressiveness down the field may draw some P.I. calls early in career -In 2 years at Bama he had 5 ints, 3 FF, and 6.5 TFL. Overall I think his 40 is going to tell us more but I see an aggressive/physical defender you can take on the large WR in the NFCE but will have to play off, jam at the line or get over the top help when faced with shiftier WR.

He’s my CB target at 14.

He’s gonna run well too, he was on the Bama 4×400 team and won the youth world championship in the 110 hurdles and 400 meter hurdles (and posted a time within a second of olympic qualifying) when he was 16. He’s obviously much bigger now, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t crack 4.45

  4. 4 Mitchell said at 8:15 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Thats great news. My only big concern is the hips. He stumbles a bit when he has to flip but 1. I would think many bigger guys have similar problems and 2. Hes so young he has time to work on it and 3. I ran 4×4’s in college too…..just not at a DI level or anywhere close to an Olympic level….

  5. 5 D3FB said at 8:24 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Agreed I think he’s going to be a positive in zone coverage early on, and he’s got enough length and long speed to be ok on 9 routes until he gets the technique completely down.

  8. 8 Sb2bowl said at 10:39 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Why Humphrey over say, Lattimore or Tabor? I’m not very high on Tabor (I don’t know if his game translates well at this point to the NFL) but Lattimore looks the part.

  9. 9 D3FB said at 10:58 AM on February 27th, 2017:

I think Lattimore goes before us, and I have concerns about a guy with roughly 700 snaps in college and a long history of hammy problems.

Tabor I cant quite put my finger on it, but something there bugs me, Sidney Jones I like but is built like a middle schooler.

  10. 10 Sb2bowl said at 11:19 AM on February 27th, 2017:

So with the Hammy issues- we are almost guaranteed to pick him?

Lattimore seems like the first CB off the board, depending on teams and how everyone tests; and agreed, something about Tabor seems off. Not sure what or why, but I see him more as a slot CB instead of an outside guy.

We know that Schwartz wants guys that aren’t afraid to hit and stick. Jones seems willing but not entirely able (nice reference to an awkward stage for all of us). Humphrey seems more than able on both accords.

Wilson seems like more of a fit for us compared to Tabor, going to be an interesting two more months.

  11. 11 Mac said at 12:33 PM on February 27th, 2017:

With the hammy issues, I’m not sure I even want Lattimore in rd 1 even if he’s there when we pick. Unless, Jones and Humphrey are both already off the board. Hamstring injuries (and their repetitive nature) scare the crap out of me.

  12. 12 D3FB said at 12:51 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Teams that are interested are going to medical the hell out of him. You had better be damn sure it’s bad luck or a simple kiniesiology fix if you’re gonna take him high.

  13. 13 Insomniac said at 4:01 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Is it just the hammy and experience that make you worry or is there something wrong in his game too?

  14. 14 D3FB said at 8:09 AM on February 28th, 2017:

The tape I’ve seen has been pretty good (I probably won’t go super deep unless it seems like he’s going to be available), there just isn’t a large sample size.

  15. 15 Mitchell said at 1:31 PM on February 27th, 2017:

I just dont see it from Lattimore. 2 of his ints came against TERRIBLE decisions/throws and while he has ALL the physical tools, I think Humphrey shows more polish already.

  16. 16 Insomniac said at 4:03 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Marcus Peters gets easy picks too but everyone drools over that. Don’t see why that’s an issue.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m getting shades of Eric Rowe if he had better hips and long speed.

  20. 20 D3FB said at 8:07 AM on February 28th, 2017:

I think he’s a more natural corner and likes contact more. Similar HWS, I like Humphrey the football player more (I was lower on Rowe than most he was a fourth round guy to me)

  22. 22 Sb2bowl said at 10:38 AM on February 27th, 2017:

The age factor is huge– a 20 year old is just starting to figure it out, his ceiling could be amazing.

We need a #1 CB- Free Agency is the place to look for that; and I wouldn’t be upset if we drafted 3 this year. Seems like overkill, but we need to completely retool our secondary. Even if that means drafting 2 CB’s and 1 Safety.

  23. 23 BobSmith77 said at 11:19 PM on February 26th, 2017:

24/7 coverage of this on the NFL channel is pure overkill.

  27. 27 Anders said at 1:59 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Thats why the Bradford trade was so important.

  28. 28 Sb2bowl said at 9:09 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Agreed. And looking forward to next year- we are only missing our 2, with at least an additional 4 with the potential to be a 3. Not including the 4 from Minnesota.

    1
    3 (ours)
    4 (ours)
    4 (Minny)
    4 (potentially a 3 from NE)
    5 (ours)
    6 (ours)
    7 (ours)

And as Anders pointed out, we picked up Wentz.

I really hope Douglas is the evaluation guy we’ve been missing; Howie truly is a master at getting value and additional resources for this team. Now we just need to hit on those assets.

  29. 29 izzylangfan said at 7:01 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Pretty good shot the Eagles will add picks with trades of players and then add more by trading back in the draft. Not necessarily the top picks but after all Roseman is in charge. I would like the Eagles to pile up picks to fill their many needs. Normally (when the Eagles have a half decent record) I have this idea that the Eagles should trade back from their first pick in the 20’s and the trade up from their third round pick and maybe move up a bit from their second round pick to get three picks in the second round maybe even two or three in the top half of that round because that’s where the best values are often found. But this year I think the Eagles can get a player they really need and want at 14 or 15.

  30. 30 scratcherk said at 9:05 AM on February 27th, 2017:

What kind of money do you think Kyle williams gets in FA? Could he replace Bennie at a cheaper rate?

  31. 31 Sb2bowl said at 10:41 AM on February 27th, 2017:

He seems like a short term replacement who is familiar with the scheme from Schwartz (he had a monster year when Schwartz was the DC).
2 years, $7m sounds about right. 1st year guaranteed while our younger guys develop (plus Beau and Destiny).

  32. 32 D3FB said at 11:01 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Ngata got 2/12 w/ 6 guaranteed from Detroit last year, I’d guess it’s probably in that range.

  33. 33 Sb2bowl said at 11:14 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Ngata seemed to have a higher reputation compared with Williams (IMO). That’s why my guess was a little lower, but I should have stated $5m guaranteed (4 the first year, 1 in year two).

If that’s the case and the cost- do we even sign him? Being what our cap is, do we try to go younger and cheaper as opposed to signing a vet?

  34. 34 D3FB said at 11:40 AM on February 27th, 2017:

I think you want to try to get younger at the position, especially since Beau is a free agent after the season.

I think if we don’t retain Bennie or reinvest in a Jonathan Hankins you sign a Mike Martin type and accept you’re gonna have to burn a pick on one mid rounds.

  35. 35 scratcherk said at 9:09 AM on February 27th, 2017:

Good year to have a full slate of picks. From Mayock:

“This is as good and as deep a class as I’ve seen in a draft in several years—with the exception of quarterback and offensive line. Running backs and tight ends, top end and depth are outstanding. Tight ends—I haven’t seen a group like this in years. Wide receivers, very good. Defensively, it’s unbelievable. The edge rushers … we haven’t seen a group like this in a long, long time. You’ll be able to get a starting edge rusher in the fourth round that last year or most drafts you’d compare to an edge rusher in the second round. Cornerbacks and safeties, it’s the best I’ve seen in 10 years at least.”

They’ve determined that some of the numbers in the first set affect numbers in the second set. Is this pretty hard for you to understand? Getting through at all?

Can someone explain to me why people love him so much? He isn’t to my mind a good WR. He can run by guys if they cannot match his speed and like most players can catch a quick slants if not disrupted at the line of scrimmage, but put a decent CB on him 1v1 and he disappears the entire game. He seems a mismatch no3 WR at best and solves none of the Eagles problems really. What am I not seeing?

He seems like a less talented version of DeSean; fast, me first attitude, questionable hands at this stage of his career. Out to get his and then factors the team into the equation.

  58. 58 Fufina said at 2:17 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Embiid has had 3 serious injuries total his entire playing career. It just happened that one of them is one of the most complex and challenging injuries to heal in the sports world, and especially in someone who is as big and growing as rapidly as he was. That taking 2 years was frustrating but as long as it heals correctly which it appears to have done (and with the wear and tear he has already put it under in 2016/17 it has been tested), then it really should not impact his health long term.

I don’t know whats happening with his knee – but bone bruises are not career threatening and not uncommon especially in young bigs. Its frustrating as a fan but there really is no serious medical reason to doubt he cannot have a full and long career at this point.

  59. 59 Nailed It! said at 2:23 PM on February 27th, 2017:

I just think its a terrible decision to be basing the hopes of your franchise on a guy who cannot even make it 20 games in a row. I mean, you have to admit that. People crush every other Philly player on any team when they miss more than two games in a row, but you cannot even speak of Embiid this way.

The Rams were originally expected to let Johnson test the open market after his play fell off a bit in 2016, but have apparently decided they can’t let their No. 1 cornerback walk for the second year in a row. Just a reminder how far we’ve come and how good we actually have it as Eagles fans, take a look at the archive at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and how many articles have been written in the past week regarding potential franchise QBs.

From Garoppolo (who Mary Kay Cabot states that the Browns should give the Patriots the #1 over pick to acquire) to Tyrod Taylor, to the lack of quality QBs in the draft, it’s clear the Browns are not in an enviable spot.

Personally, I would rather have Wentz and our slate of draft picks than the Browns plethora of picks and our 2nd round pick in 2018.

    First round: 1, 12
    Second round: 33, 52
    Third round: 65

NFL history has not been kind to teams that have traded a 1st round pick for a QB on someone else’s roster. Outside of Favre in 1992, I wouldn’t consider any of the QBs traded to be franchise QBs, that includes Carson Palmer and Sam Bradford.

If Teddy hadn’t blown out his knee and Sam had a good year for us while Carson sat on the bench, would he be the best choice for the Browns this season.

  84. 84 Insomniac said at 4:26 PM on February 27th, 2017:

It is the Dolphins after all, they overpay everyone. If they sign Stills at 12mil a year then maybe we could snag Jarvis Landry next year.

  85. 85 Dave said at 4:28 PM on February 27th, 2017:

    I’m down with that.

  86. 86 Sean Stott said at 4:30 PM on February 27th, 2017:

If Stills gets 12mm/year, it’s an indictment on this 2017 WR FA class, not just the team that signs him.

  87. 87 GermanEagle said at 4:33 PM on February 27th, 2017:

True dat. However I do pray to God that the Eagles won’t be one of his bidders though. Kenny sucks Stills.

Or you could say kenny stills ucks

  89. 89 GermanEagle said at 5:49 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Since AB’s new contract 12m for Stills may be realistic after all… *puke

Last time I checked we are not in great SC condition.

  92. 92 laeagle said at 6:53 PM on February 27th, 2017:

That’s easily up to $13-14M now. Which begs the question, do you pay that kind of crazy money for a guy like Stills or go just a bit further for Alshon. Alshon will get more, but if you’re already breaking the bank, why not go all the way?

  93. 93 Insomniac said at 7:43 PM on February 27th, 2017:

They should definitely go all the way if that’s the case. Jeffery just offers much more for the offense. While he is still a risk due to his PED usage, he’s still less of a gamble than Stills is. Stills might have his best years ahead of him but for what he is right now he shouldn’t be getting near the money that rumors are floating around.

  94. 94 laeagle said at 7:52 PM on February 27th, 2017:

I tend to agree. Stills at his best is still a low grade DJax. You’re pretty much guaranteed to not get your money’s worth. Alshon at his best is a legit #1 receiver and makes everyone more effective. You can supplement him with deep speed on the cheap or through the draft. Alshon at his best is dictating matchups for the defense. Stills is just adding speed. If you’re going to break the bank, go all the way. Otherwise, spend that money on a cornerback.

  95. 95 GermanEagle said at 4:36 PM on February 27th, 2017:

So when are we going to first find out that the Eagles have signed Alshon Jeffereyzzz:

    8 March or 9 March at 4pm?!

March 5-8: Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2015 contracts at 4:00 PM ET, on March 9. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 PM ET, on March 8.

    Or Neither.

  98. 98 GermanEagle said at 6:45 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Jeffery >>> Stills. And it’s not even close. Would still prefer DeSean of all of them though.

  99. 99 GermanEagle said at 5:27 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Damn you Steelers. Could have waited with making AB the highest paid WR after 9th of March…

  100. 100 Nick C said at 5:38 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Think it could be a good thing. There was speculation this morning that Alshon could get 16M; Nowhere near as productive or as reliable as AB, and his camp was banking on the future offers of WRs.

  101. 101 Dave said at 5:45 PM on February 27th, 2017:

Yeah, AB averaging $14.5M per year brings down Alshon.

  102. 102 GermanEagle said at 5:47 PM on February 27th, 2017:

I read AB is averaging 17 for the 4 years, and 18.5 for the first 3 years. So why is his extension good for us again?

  103. 103 Nick C said at 5:48 PM on February 27th, 2017:

    Was originally reported at 15M

  104. 104 GermanEagle said at 5:49 PM on February 27th, 2017:

    No. Not by Schefter.

  105. 105 Nick C said at 5:56 PM on February 27th, 2017:

I read it is a four year extension. So add his numbers this year and divide by 5 really and it could come down a bit in AAV. My best guess.

  106. 106 GermanEagle said at 6:44 PM on February 27th, 2017:

This is not how the agents of The so called Jeffereyzz will look at that. It is a bad sign for teams like the Eagles and everyone on Twitter (Banner & Co.) sees it the same way.

  110. 110 Dave said at 5:58 PM on February 27th, 2017:

He has $4.71M due this year, so his 4 year extension is really a 5 year, $72.71M deal.

He’s a little stiff but he does show glimpses of a smooth hip flip @1:44. It’s slow but smooth. https://draftbreakdown.com/video/fabian-moreau-vs-virginia-2015/
