Draft Day is Here

Posted: April 27th, 2017 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 175 Comments »

I am working on my long draft post.

For now, get excited. The Eagles are going to add a future HOF player tonight. What about Danny Watkins and Marcus Smith you say? Watkins will be in a firefighters HOF in whatever Canadian city he calls home these days. Smith has a legit shot for the Louisville HOF.

See?

I think the Eagles are in position to get a good player. Lots of talk about 2 QBs going in the Top 13. That would be helpful. Doesn’t matter who takes them, it pushes a player down to the Eagles. Lots of talk about Hasson Reddick going Top 10. That would also be good. He doesn’t make sense for the Eagles, but could push down someone who does make sense.

Lots of buzz that the Browns could take QB Mitch Trubisky 1st overall. I don’t buy that. I think they are trying to get someone to trade up. Float the rumor and see what happens. I feel confident the pick will be DE Myles Garrett. I hope I’m dead wrong and Trubisky does go first. That could lead to a run on QBs and we might see 3 go before the Eagles pick.

I’m still hoping the team explores moving back. I would love to add a 3rd round pick. This draft is so deep and there are so many prospects I have interest in. Thank god the Eagles have 8 picks for now. If they only had a few picks like last year, I’d be going nuts.

No real update on the Gareon Conley situation. We’re all in wait and see mode on this guy. I don’t think he’s going in the 1st round, but after that, your guess is as good as mine. Tremendous player. And might be the victim of false allegations. But do you take that risk? If so, how early. I am guessing 3rd round, but you can bet NFL teams are digging into this situation as aggressively as they can. Nobody wants to pass on Conley if they think he’s truly innocent.

Let’s just hope we don’t have any breaking news today about players doing something dumb, getting accused of something serious or getting arrested. Let this be a good day for everyone (except Dallas).

RE: Connely –> ESPN radio said this morning that the footage from the elevator security camera is not consistent with the accuser’s story. Does that change the likelihood that the Eagles take him?

In a weird way I’d love to see the Eagles take both Mixon and Conley, just for the entertainment value of listening to every sports host in the country having their heads explode. We’d be like the Al Davis Raiders (or the Cowpukes, yuk).

Of course, if we take them they’ll turn out to be irredeemable jerks.

egads. I keep typing my opinion and deleting it. My mind is changing faster than a HS girl on prom night. I keep coming back to this — I want the Eagles to pick Conley. Prior to the incident, he was a top 5 pick. Everybody here was salivating about him but knew he was out of reach. Now, he might be in reach. I can’t comment on whether is he guilty or not. I can’t comment on his character. I can only comment on his play. You want to win games, you need someone to handle the NFC WR’s. Can other CB’s do that? sure, I guess – but Conley was ranked so high for a reason…
    ….
That would be the only scenario I want to drop back. Drop back and grab select him. Otherwise – I really don’t know who I’d prefer.

  5. 5 Rellihcs said at 9:47 AM on April 27th, 2017:

Remember though, if you cover those WRs – and they are indeed very good so even with a very good or great corner, DGB, Brandon Marshall, Dez, etc.. etc… – they will catch some balls. And Conley has some legit tackling/toughness questions.

Just a reminder that he’s not a perfect CB.

I too would be fine with taking him, and I think he’d be a very good CB for us, but remember, he’s got flaws on the field too.

Plus I kinda want Davis or Harris over him anyway.

  10. 10 xmbk said at 11:23 AM on April 27th, 2017:

I really don’t think he was top 5 prior to the incident. Maybe top 10, probably top 20. It really sucks for him if he’s truly innocent, but if there is some clear cut evidence, it’s possible he won’t drop too far.

  11. 11 Ark87 said at 9:42 AM on April 27th, 2017:

I always try to get perspective before the draft. Look at a bunch of first rounds in the past. It’s so exciting to see these players as special difference makers, but that’s only the best possible version of these players. So remember, when Mayock is talking these guys up to sound amazing (their tape really stand out from the 500 other prospects he watched), pay attention to his next line “you know who he reminds me of, a Reggie Bush type, not quite as great of a prospect, but that type of player” —oh GOD help us.

These people are selling a show, and the enthusiasm is contagious, just remember that we’re looking at hopeful starters, not hall of famers (there might be some in here but who knows where), and we’ll all survive these 3 days.

I’m hoping we pick up a pair of starters for this year, or at least 1 starter and a couple of role-players. Maybe 4 or so starters in the long run. Everything else is gravy.

    BB:

The wild card is Roger Goodell.

Conley could win a civil case against his accuser . . .

And Goodell could still suspend him for bad judgment abt women.

Why? ‘Cause the federal court of appeals in NY ruled that Goodell’s authority is unreviewable — effectively, nearly unbounded — in the Brady deflategate case.

You just never know with Goodell.

  31. 31 bill said at 11:57 AM on April 27th, 2017:

You’re right, of course. But …

The optics of such a move would be really bad look for the NFL, I think. “Reinforcing stereotypes of black men as predators who can’t be trusted to behave themselves around [white] women…” If I were advising Goodell, I sure as heck would let him know that at least some of the headlines would reflect that sentiment.

If Conley is never charged, Goodell’s smartest move is to ignore it completely. If he is charged, you follow established precedent. If he wins a civil case against his accuser (as you have stated, stupid and highly unlikely), you ignore it completely – your history of dealing with violence against women leaves you no room to be seen as celebrating such an outcome. If he is convicted, you don’t have to really do or say anything (as a young black male convicted of raping a white woman, he’s not getting a Stanford Swimming sentence). I don’t know that there is a winning tactic for the NFL to address it.

  42. 42 Dan said at 11:31 AM on April 27th, 2017:

Of course Conley isn’t going to go “Ya I raped the girl” I think they need to get the police report and any details from people who aren’t directly involved or his college teammate.

  43. 43 Nick C said at 11:33 AM on April 27th, 2017:

I will say that it doesn’t look good for the accuser. She was following him around all night at the bar (and did not meet him in the elevator). Does that mean she consented… absolutely not. But the fact that she already lied and 4 other people are witnesses to Conley’s story does not bode well for her in the court of law.

  44. 44 peteike said at 12:06 PM on April 27th, 2017:

I read that there is one witness that is opposite of others. That seems to be skipped in the reports defending him though. Still think its too late in the process and he will drop because of it. I tend to agree though that its leaning his way, just not soon enough to clear him completely

  45. 45 A Roy said at 12:08 PM on April 27th, 2017:

    source?

  46. 46 peteike said at 12:13 PM on April 27th, 2017:

no source, I heard it early on and then again a day or two ago on the radio so take that for what its worth. Just that after I heard it a 2nd time recently I thought it might be true but I honestly have no clue. I still think it may be too late in the process to clear him, esp if there was a ra.. kit taken etc

  47. 47 ACViking said at 12:11 PM on April 27th, 2017:

At least 2 of the “witnesses” corroborating Conley’s story are his 2 friends in the hotel room with him.

You know . . . the other 2 guys, who with Conley and the alleged victim, would form the “foursome” to which, she reportedly told the police, Conley invited her.

    Just sayin’.

  48. 48 Sb2bowl said at 1:38 PM on April 27th, 2017:

I prefer the term “collaboration” rather than foursome. Sounds more dignified.

  49. 49 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:34 PM on April 27th, 2017:

A witness that is backing up her rape claim?

  50. 50 Nick C said at 12:39 PM on April 27th, 2017:

None of us know what happened. Have to trust the authorities… It is a shady situation. And as AC says, it could be some sort of shock which messes up her story. I just agreed it doesn’t look good for her. Unfortunately she went to the hotel room with his 4 friends and none of her own friends. Not saying she deserved to be raped (so please don’t start with that.) It was a very poor decision on Conley’s part to be even engaging in such shady behavior, rape aside. And it was just as poor decision of her to go up to that room after following him around all night IF she wasn’t trying to get some. What happened next, I’m not even qualified to guess.

  51. 51 peteike said at 12:57 PM on April 27th, 2017:

ya agree totally esp on the front that his story more or less seems to be more legit. That being said, I think he falls anyway just for being around that this late in the game

  52. 52 Gian GEAGLE said at 12:10 PM on April 27th, 2017:

Also looks like she gets jealous and starts pushing herself on to him when he puts his arm around another girl. If that was her jealousy showing already at that point of the night im sure the Conley camp will try to correlate that with their allegations about an obviously jealous, Jilted woman trying to spite him after the fact.
    ..
It doesn’t look good for her, but videos like that can be misleading so realistically we probably can’t draw any real conclusion regarding what happened either way based on that video. It certainly hurts her that she already blatantly lied to the police
    ..
I don’t know what happened, so I’ll defer to the authorities charged with investigating this. Either way, I think someone needs to be punished, either he raped her and he should be in jail or she is maliciously lying trying to ruin this kids life with her calculated timing, in which case she needs to be held accountable.
    ..
Someone is behaving in a disgusting manner and needs to be punished, I don’t think this should end with “no harm, no foul both parties walk away in the end”. clearly either Conley or his accuser did something very wrong and one of the two needs to be held accountable

  53. 53 ACViking said at 12:15 PM on April 27th, 2017:

. . .she already blatantly lied to the police .
    . . .

If the alleged victim was in fact raped, what level of exactitude — when she may be suffering some level of shock — is fair to require when she recounts the events?

But go ahead and rush to judgment about the alleged victim.

But before I die Id like to see what a round 1 Linebacker actually looks like In Midnight Green, so I think Im just going to be pro rd 1 linebacker every single year until the Eagles draft one. Whether they need a LB or not..
    ..
I hear nothing but people raving about the kid from Temple, but im in no position to speak on him. I heard Reuban Foster described as a “Fire Breathing Dragon on the football field Who hits everything that moves” which doesn’t sound bad either

  109. 109 RC5000 said at 12:47 PM on April 27th, 2017:

Agree it’s preferable because I would rather have Davis but Alshon is injury prone so there’s no guarantee he’s going to be here after this year and he’s also a positive test away from a 10 game suspension.

Alshon’s best year statistically was playing alongside Brandon Marshall. I realize Williams isn’t quite Marshall but it can work.

  110. 110 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:43 PM on April 27th, 2017:

I hear you, but to play Devils advocate we have invested a lot in young WRs, and while they have mostly dissapointed us up Til now, it’s a position that can take some time transitioning to the pro game. I’d be crazy to have confidence in Nelson Agholar or DGB right now, but we paid for Alshon and Torrey and I’d make the most out of that and use them as an opportunity to spend another year evaluating the growth rate of our yoûng WR investments before we decide to give up on any of them and invest more premium draft picks into the position.
    ..
We can’t be confident in Nelson or DGB, but we don’t have to be at least in the short term while we have Carson throwing to Alshon, Torrey, Ertz, Jordan and SPROLES this year. We don’t have to be confidemt in Nelson or DGB but we can also respect that there were some legit factors working against them last year that could have contributed to them showing what they were really capable of. For example:

DGB is a young raw talent, no one would ever confuse him for a polished young WR, and we know how complicated the west coast offense can be so while I wouldn’t bet a nickel on DGB having a breakout season, I think we have to give him an offseason to get comfortable in this new offense before we give up on him considering he was traded to the Eagles at the end of The offseason which would be challenging for a veteran WR łet alone a raw 2nd year WR who was really high upside “Project”
    ,
I’d be insane to have confidence in Agholar since we just watched him have zero confidence in himself for an entire NFL season. But I do think he has the physical tools to become a successful WR if he can overcome the mental quicksand he was stuck in last year.
    ..
Im willing to give any young WR we invest a high pick in a chance to play with the same QB, in the same offense, under the same coach for two seasons in a row before I completely give up on him. I imagine it wasn’t very easy going from the chip kelly offense to all the intracacies that come with the west coast offense
    .
I won’t complain if the Eagles get a stud WR in the draft, I’ll take elite talent at any position I can get at this stage of our team building, but I think we are in a good position (at least short term) when it comes to the WR position and I’d wait Til next year before investing a pick in the first 3 rounds on another WR. Ultimately, if they hit on their draft picks I won’t care what position they happen to play since we are at least two good draftd away from really being ready to contend

  111. 111 Green Sea Turtle said at 1:52 PM on April 27th, 2017:

Man, I hate to agree with Gian Giggles… but I agree with Gian Giggles.
I’d wait until next year before investing another top pick on WR. We’ve got a couple of potential maybes to give a little more time to at WR, and big immediate holes elsewhere. Go RB then CB then DE.

  112. 112 peteike said at 2:41 PM on April 27th, 2017:

agree but I also get the other side of that per the 1 yr on Alshon, last year of JMatt and who knows with Smith and the rest. I say CB, RB then rest

  113. 113 RC5000 said at 1:55 PM on April 27th, 2017:

We don’t retain Alshon because of injury or a suspension, we’re back to square one and the top priority is surrounding Wentz with what he needs to succeed as QB.

As you say it takes time at WR so that’s why taking a WR when you’re in position to get a top WR prospect is a good idea to me.

The draft is more for procuring talent for the future. Davis and Williams are more talented than anyone but Alshon.

  114. 114 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:09 PM on April 27th, 2017:

you feel confident in the Eagles drafting a WR in the first 3 rounds of this draft? Personally, it would surprise me.

But Ultimately we all have different ideal scenarios for what positions the Eagles should address early, but in the end that goes out the window if the player they draft ends up being a stud. Not many people were happy when the Eagles drafted Linebacker jordan Hicks in round 3, and two years later he is on his way to becoming one of the most beloved Eagles
    ..
If we can nail two quality drafts in a row. The positions will all work themselves out in the end

Washington used up all its franchise Tags on Cousins the last two years. He can walk after the year and they wouldn’t be able to stop him, so will we see washington look for a QB in the top 100? or are they planning to backüp the Brinks truck to Cousins and hope he doesn’t get fed up with the franchise deciding to leave for greener pastures now that his bank account is already looking pretty sweet after two years of QB franchise Tag Money?

Cowboys vs Eagles are engaged in an arms race to see who can fix their cornerback defficiencies. preference for me:
Foster, Conley (oof both of those in a row), Humphrey, Reddick, Davis, Williams
    Probable picks:
D line guy (pick one), Davis, Humphrey, Williams, Ross

I think if they go WR at 14, they have to go corner in 2nd. I really was hoping to get a Mixon/Kamara with that 2nd pick. Interesting to see how it plays out. I could really see a D line guy first, then that leaves open other possibilities I guess in 2nd but they cant ignore CB too long. Kareem Hunt could come into play later if they hold off on rb

  124. 124 xmbk said at 1:32 PM on April 27th, 2017:

I could see DE in round 2. The only combo that seems unlikely is offense at both 14 and 43. Hunt could be gone by 99, but they certainly could hold off on RB and see who it is that drops.

  125. 125 Sifter said at 1:39 PM on April 27th, 2017:

I’m hoping the Eagles can suck one of the OL needy teams into a trade. Seattle, Denver and Baltimore have 4 or more picks in the first 3
rounds of this draft and may be willing to trade up for a big need.
Baltimore’s not a big move back…Giants, Packers, Bucs, Dolphins – not so many picks, but might be desperate. OL will be scarce: Cam Robinson,
Garrett Bolles, Forrest Lamp and Ryan Ramcyk are the only worthy OL’s in round 1 and if we can convince someone to start a run on them at #14, then that’s a strategic win.

Or a LB team who wants a dropping Reuben Foster?
    This is all
contingent on who is left at #14 of course…but if it’s no one amazing
I’d be trying the teams who want linemen first.

Also need to find someone late in the draft who can replace Beau as our #3 DT while playing on a dirt cheap salary for the next 4 years. breakaway speed, no way, Jamaal was like a track athlete. He had one of the fastest accelerations. I remember reading his times would have beat Carl Lewis’ early olympic times, he was that fast. That’s why I was asking, Wasnt his combine comperable to Lane Johnson’s? I found the comparison odd considering Charles was such a talented athletic burner. Maybe he was talking about being a well rounded runner who could do damage in the passing game like Charles?

Tom Brady will be attending round 1 on the parkway (albeit hidden kneeling inside the podium, facing away from the crowd). A yet unreported fine print part of the deflategate punishment.

Sources say the Eagles will either trade up, stay pat, or look to move back in the first round, depending on the offers they receive.

Sources add that Howie Roseman is a very handsome and trustworthy man.

I’m not not the biggest fan of Conley.. I like CBs who can tackle.

Would be happy with any of Fournette, McCaffrey, Davis, Williams, Howard, Robinson, Barnett, Allen, Foster, Lattimore. That’s 10 players – with Garrett, the QBs, and guys at non-need positions like Adams and Hooker projected to go high, at least a couple of those guys should be on the board.

Of course there are reports now of dallas being interested in Conley. That’s a rumor I have to believe. Cowboys are desperate for corners and they never met a red flag they didn’t turn into an opportunity to get their scumbag hands on a talent they should have had no shot of getting.
    .
at this pace we will be facing a Zeke/Joe Mixon Thunder/lightning tandem next year. Cowboys should just thumb their nose at everyone and see if they can spend every single draft pick this year on a kid with giant red flags. Why not? Jerry has no shame, he does whatever he wants, capitalizes on scumbag talent other teams can’t touch and as long as they play well and stop short at killing someone, he continues to use them against the rest of the league
    ..
Same usual suspects take advantage of all the kids who fall because of charachter: andy Reid, Jerry Jones, Pete Carroll, Dan Snyder and of course Bill Bellichek would sell his mothers ass to win
