7 and 1

It wasn’t pretty at all, but the Eagles beat the Niners 33-10 to advance to 7-1. What a season.

The Eagles didn’t have their A-game on offense. Carson Wentz was a bit erratic. The O-line struggled at times. The coaches didn’t call a great game. The defense did play well, continually pounding QB C.J. Beathard.

When the Eagles got into an offensive funk like this in the past, they tended to lose.

OAK 13, PHI 9 – 2009

NYG 15, PHI 7 – 2013

ARZ 21, PHI 17 – 2011

There was also the 13-13 tie with Cincy back in 2008. The offense would come out flat and struggle to move the ball. The defense would play well, if not really well, but it would never be enough.

This Eagles team just feels different. The offense had a downfield pass-interference call that set up at TD and there was a long TD pass. The defense came up with a pick-six. That’s 21 points based on three plays. That kind of quick-strike, big play ability makes this team dangerous even when things aren’t clicking.

The defense was stifling at times. They gave up 238 yards, their lowest total of the season. Beathard was only sacked 4 times, but he got hit over and over and over. He took a real beating. The Niners were hurt on the OL going into the game and then lost a pair of starters so this was a game where the Eagles were supposed to dominate up front.

Jalen Mills made a huge play late in the half. The Eagles led 9-0 and had just scored a TD to get that lead. Mills dropped back, made a good read and then jumped a route to pick off a pass from Beathard. Mills then weaved through traffic and went across the field for the TD. The offense added a 2-point conversion and suddenly the score was 17-0.

At that point, you knew the game was over. It was just a question of how it would play out.

The Eagles could have overlooked the 0-7 Niners, but that didn’t happen. The early offensive struggles were about execution and not effort. The Eagles did a poor job of handling blitzes. Carson Wentz seemed to hold the ball too long at times. Might have helped to call plays with shorter routes as well. The Niners front seven played really hard and won the battle up front more than they should have.

Big V was up and down at LT. He gave up one sack for sure. I’ll need to re-watch the game to know what happened in detail. He did have some good blocks. When you think about his first start last year, at RT vs the Skins, this was an infinitely better performance. Vaitai played well enough for the offense to function and move the ball.

There will be plenty for the coaches to fix on offense. And I’m sure Jim Schwartz will find a thing or two to complain about on defense.

At the end of the day, the Eagles won by 23 and are now 7-1. The crazy, fun season keeps rolling on.

*****

Oh yeah…go Skins.

Tommy I’d be curious to see if you think the wetness affected how Wentz was throwing it, I don’t know what kind of history he has throwing the wet ball but it sounded like he was having trouble deciding whether to use the glove, no glove, glove, etc.

Otherwise I’m surprised there weren’t more fumbles today because it was a soggy one.

Decent day , good times when a 33-10 victory ” wasnt pretty” and no injuries.. good enough for Foles to play SWEET

One thing that appears to be different, is Wentz has earned the trust of DP and FR, and he’s welcome to adjust at the LOS. This and the fact that DP is not showing a tell when things get contentious. He seems as likely to run as to throw, and that opens up the play book. Of course we haven’t really been in a hole late very much so far, but scoring early, balancing the play-calling and letting Dr Wentz operate has been a nice combination.

Dak and it’s a no brainer. Cousins will be 30 next year and isn’t a young QB.

Against a really good defense. And he also had 4 TDs and hung 35 on a really good defense on the road. If he’s not for real, he’s sure doing a good job of faking it.

  47. 47 Someguy77 said at 6:47 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Even though this was a blowout, this game seemed to show some of the injuries issues which have been piling up for this team.

Tough thing too is they won’t get back any key players after the bye either except Darby possibly.

  48. 48 CrackSammich said at 6:48 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Hicks isn’t coming back, but Darby keeps Jenkins out of the slot, and hopefully Watkins and McDougle off the field.

  49. 49 Guy Media said at 6:48 PM on October 29th, 2017:

That’s really important. Jenkins “can” play slot vs. Jenkins “should” play slot are very different.

  50. 50 CrackSammich said at 6:50 PM on October 29th, 2017:

When we have two competent safeties behind him, I’d love to just let Jenkins play Polomalu and do whatever position he finds convenient. I wouldn’t call McDougle , Watkins, and Maragos (RIP) competent, though.

  55. 55 Masked Man said at 6:48 PM on October 29th, 2017:

    Hey Tommy!

When Wentz and Mills both scored on big plays in the 2nd quarter, I knew the game was over as well. I decided I was not going to stress about this team facing the Niners at all today. Just decided to enjoy the ride.

Weather was not great and had to be a key factor. Missing JP and Hicks were obvious adjustments. But nothing stopped the Eagles today.

Glad to see Alshon get untracked and see Ertz remain steady throughout. Also noticed that Hollins came in for a couple of quick plays that sort of jump started the 2nd half passing offense. All very good signs.

I don’t remember ever seeing a team have “an Ugly Blowout” before. But that’s what it was. And you gotta win some ugly games to win big. I’ll take winning ugly by 33-7 every week of the year!

  68. 68 Someguy77 said at 6:59 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Curry had a very good game today and quietly has really come on the past month.

Seems like he is getting a lot more snaps lately while Long’s snaps have been coming notably down since early Sept. Love to see the numbers to confirm that though.

This team has 2 clear strengths – Wentz and the most deep and complete DL in the NFL. Other teams have certainly rid less to the Super Bowl and even won it.

Last time Eagles opened 7-1 was 2004.

Other thing that caught my eye:

9 Eagles players’ had at least 1 reception today. Here is a breakdown by game:

    @ Skins – 8
    @ Chiefs – 9
    vs Giants – 6
    @ Chargers – 6
    vs Cards – 8
    @ Panthers – 8
    vs Skins – 8

With the exception of the Chargers and Giants’ games, really spreading the ball. Generally mirroring that approach rushing the ball too.

Offense has been scoring a lot of points despite having only 1 running or receiving yard game from a player this season (Blount – 136 yards vs Chargers).

  79. 79 CrackSammich said at 7:09 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I went down the list on that about a week ago. Also notable: Every single skill player that has been on the gameday roster has caught a pass from Wentz.

The rest of the NFL has been pretty disappointing. Dallas is going to win. Panthers, Saints, Falcons won. Patriots* won again though I’m sure they cheated. Browns couldn’t pull off a miracle against the Vikings. Houston beating Seattle is a nice, but very small consolation though. Don’t want to travel to Seattle in January.

  86. 86 Someguy77 said at 7:16 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Houston being Seattle is very nice.

It would have been really nice to see a Skins victory today too. Likely Boys split the next two and head into the big showdown at Dallas after the bye at 5-4.

Eagles should be 8-1. I forget the win percentage for East Coast teams vs West Coast foes but they get a bump for 1 PM starts & Broncos are coming off a short week/division rival.

Eagles win that game and then people can start talking about wrapping up the NFC East.

  87. 87 kajomo said at 7:17 PM on October 29th, 2017:

How is that small consolation. Other than the Cowboysbthe team I most wanted to lose was Seattle. Now we have a little breathing room even if we lose to them later this season. We need the playoffs to go thru Philly to have a shot

    But also the Texans D.

    And my opponent had Wilson.

I’m ahead by 1 with Antonio Brown still to play. But he has Leveon and Chiefs D.

What a stupid week of fantasy.

    Shall be interesting.

Dallas, Washington, and Giants all losing for sure. We’ll see how we do.

  114. 114 kajomo said at 10:06 PM on October 29th, 2017:

At this point Dallas is the only other team in the NFCE with a chance. The Skins are toast due to division losses.

Th Chiefs will be playing on a short week on the road. I think their better than Dallas, but that does level the playing field

  115. 115 wee2424 said at 7:56 PM on October 29th, 2017:

According to Glazer who tends to be accurate; the Birds are supposedly going to be very aggressive before the trade deadline. Interesting.

I’ll believe it when LaCanfora says it.

I’m not advocating for this but it is an interesting nugget. Det. had been contacted by teams aquiring about Megatron’s rights. Megatron was spotted on a plane heading to Philly today.

    Now this report from Glazer.

Im sure if Megatron were to come back it would only be for a contender with a strong QB. We have and are.

    Interesting stuff.

  118. 118 Guy Media said at 8:11 PM on October 29th, 2017:

We have amazing doctors in Philly. He could be coming here to be medically cleared.

  120. 120 Guy Media said at 8:13 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Ok, best guess as to why he’s on his way here?

  121. 121 D3FB said at 8:20 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Maybe he’s here for informal conversation that just got made super public (if this is the case Eagles have to be really careful w/ tampering).

    Most likely it’s just coincidence.

  122. 122 wee2424 said at 8:25 PM on October 29th, 2017:

You would go to the team doctors that have interest in you to do that.

  123. 123 Guy Media said at 8:26 PM on October 29th, 2017:

But there are specialists here that do a lot of surgeries, maybe a follow up on some old stuff?

  124. 124 D3FB said at 8:30 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Best I can tell he’s never had anything more than a high ankle sprain. If he’s got to see specialists for anything after 22 months of not playing football he’s cooked. Theory doesn’t hold up.

  125. 125 Guy Media said at 8:30 PM on October 29th, 2017:

    Fair enough.

  126. 126 wee2424 said at 8:33 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Possible, but it does coincide with the rumor that Birds are reportedly going to be aggressive. Smith hasn’t been to great.

I don’t want the Birds to do it. I would much rather them put Hollins in Smith’s spot, Marcus Johnson in Hollins, and use Smith situationally.

  127. 127 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:13 PM on October 29th, 2017:

We don’t need Megatron, he can’t block a DE. We need OL depth. That’s the only position group worth giving up next year picks for right now.

    I concur.

  129. 129 wee2424 said at 8:37 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I hear ya, but Glazer is pretty much right up there with him as far as accuracy.

From my understanding Glazer only reports on something when it is factual. Especially when he does it in front of a national audience on TV like he just did.

  130. 130 Guy Media said at 8:39 PM on October 29th, 2017:

  133. 133 D3FB said at 8:02 PM on October 29th, 2017:

McDougle won’t net anything, Robinson wouldn’t make sense if you are pushing your chips onto the table, and the rest are all young cost controlled guys.

You can never have enough CBs.

  134. 134 Guy Media said at 8:03 PM on October 29th, 2017:

    Correct.

  136. 136 wee2424 said at 8:02 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Yeah, idk how I feel about this.

  137. 137 BobSmith77 said at 8:07 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Good. This team could use a bit more depth and an even an upgrade at MLB or RB is possible.

Yeah they don’t have their 2nd or 3rd round picks next year but this is shaping up to be a special year. Need to take advantage of that fact especially in a year where there doesn’t appear to be a great team.

  138. 138 D3FB said at 8:13 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Every move they make right now weakens them next year and the year after.

  139. 139 BobSmith77 said at 8:35 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Maybe although I am dubious what ultimate value a very late 6th/7th rounder has next year.

At some point too, there has to be a bit of a priority to try to get over the hump and win a championship for a franchise long-deprived of winning one. Getting home field throughout would make a difference too in the playoffs especially given how this team had played at home under Pederson. First time Eagles have performed very well at the Linc vs overall record.

Doesn’t mean they need to get a big name or a ‘shiny’ type of acquisition but they could use a few upgrades including even a starter at MLB or better back at RB than Smallwood/Clement/Barner.

Kind of like what the Cubs did last year and the Dodgers to a lesser degree. Different sport with very different dynamics but the better team in football at home wins a more than in baseball including in the playoffs.

  140. 140 Guy Media said at 8:38 PM on October 29th, 2017:

“Maybe although I am dubious what ultimate value a very late 6th/7th rounder has next year.”

But it isn’t just that. Likely higher picks, cap space we need to retain our own, and none of those trades makes up better than New England or KC.

  141. 141 BobSmith77 said at 8:43 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Can’t not make a move because it might not make the Eagles better than a possible Super Bowl opponent. Teams operating with that kind of overly conservative strategic paradigm are doomed to fail.

Chiefs aren’t the same defensively without Berry and the Pats have the chinks in their armor too this year.

We’ll see how long Brady keeps taking this many hits and playing so well. Pats OL was better last year and the 4-game suspension kept Brady fresh late in the year.

  142. 142 D3FB said at 8:45 PM on October 29th, 2017:

The picks don’t super matter if they are late, but the salary cap does.

Also you’re not likely to get a starter level Mike for a late round pick.

  143. 143 Someguy77 said at 10:16 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I would be more than willing to trade a 4th round pick for a starting level MIKE especially one can be a nickel package option.

Kendrick continues to play at a high level but I’m dubious he’ll say healthy all year (already missed a start due to his hamstring injury) or that Hicks is going to come back at a high level as a starter.

  144. 144 D3FB said at 8:15 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I’m terrified they go crazy, trade for Cordy Glenn, Danny Trevathan and Megatron.

  145. 145 Guy Media said at 8:18 PM on October 29th, 2017:

That’ll be pricey and ruin my draft fun.

  146. 146 wee2424 said at 8:24 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Destroy chemistry (dream team mid-season), and mortgage or draft assets which are low already while guaranteeing future cap issues. Too add, not allow a player such as Hollins get more snaps in which he deserves.

  147. 147 BobSmith77 said at 8:48 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Why would a secondary move or two suddenly destroy this team’s chemistry?

This team doesn’t need another WR. They could use an upgrade at RB to pair with Blount since Sproles is out, a better option at MLB, and possibly a T for depth with Peters out.

Roseman late tinkering moves have already paid some big dividends (especially Blount) and this team doesn’t need a flashy one. Just some more tinkering.

  148. 148 SteveH said at 8:36 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I would trade for Megatron if the price was right. Who wouldn’t.

  149. 149 CrackSammich said at 8:39 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I wouldn’t. He looked old before he retired. He’d come at the expense of the future.

  150. 150 SteveH said at 8:41 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I’d take an old Megatron anyday. I just don’t see where he’d fit really, with Alshon already here, maybe to take Torrey Smith’s job.

  151. 151 CrackSammich said at 8:43 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Torrey’s job is the burner. Old Megatron would be playing Alshon’s role.

  152. 152 SteveH said at 8:44 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I think Hollins can be the burner. Megatron I think would be a red zone target or an extra super talented dude on the field in 4 wides.

All of this is fantasyland of course, Megatron isn’t coming here. If we trade for someone it will be a linebacker or an OL.

  153. 153 Insomniac said at 9:00 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I’m pretty sure Torrey’s job is the bench warmer at this point.

  154. 154 D3FB said at 8:41 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Megatron doesn’t really cost anything assuming he’s willing to play for peanuts. A trade would be less than what we got for Tobin.

Maybe he eats some of Hollins snaps, and maybe you lose Gibson, but that’s the extent of the downside.

Personally I’d see what Seantrell Henderson would cost (should be like a 6 for a 7) and otherwise hold pat

  155. 155 DustyRyder71 said at 11:00 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I can’t imagine we are unhappy enough with our WRs that we’d trade for someone who would have to learn to have a rapport with Wentz, etc.

A tackle may make sense but not sure of targets. Maybe we look for backup depth more than starters. We don’t have a ton of draft capital and may need the rollover cap space next summer. On the other hand, if there is a key target out there, may be worth going for it this year.

  216. 216 Forthebirds said at 9:25 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Props to Curry. Very stout against the run and getting lots of pressure on QBs. May not be playing up to the big contract yet, but seems to be getting there. Kendricks continues to have big games, and CB’s continue to play beyond any reasonable expectation. Special teams come up with a big play. Offense didn’t play well overall, but came up with big plays when needed and still managed to put up over 25 pts. No doubt this team is the most complete team and best team in NFL. Go Eagles!

  217. 217 Guy Media said at 9:26 PM on October 29th, 2017:

If Curry were still on his rookie deal I wouldn’t rip him, we’ll see how he finishes the year from a production standpoint.

  218. 218 truehaynes said at 9:30 PM on October 29th, 2017:

you cant blame him for his contract. dude is balling right now and could have had 3 more sacks today. hes also a very underatted reason why we have the best run D in the NFL.

  219. 219 Guy Media said at 9:31 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I don’t blame him for the contract, but his output doesn’t match his cap hit; that’s a recipe for a ticket off of every team in the league.

    And

“could have had 3 more sacks today” is the general knock on the dude as vocalized by Schwartz this offseason.

  220. 220 truehaynes said at 9:33 PM on October 29th, 2017:

thats true but I honestly think hes playing up to that contract this year, just not getting the sack numbers on would want. Its like saying that graham was bad last season because he only had 5.5 when he was obviously one of the best DEs in the league. for example I would have rather had graham last year than vic beasley even though beasley had more than twice as many sacks

  221. 221 Guy Media said at 9:35 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I don’t think we’re going to be on the same page with the vitality of sack total for what a DE is worth overall. What that makes a guy worth on your cap isn’t in dispute however. Dudes who don’t get to the QB just aren’t in line for the same paydays as dudes who do a lot of other things well.

And I agree on Graham, but there is a reason Howie set that bonus money for him based on sack totals.

  222. 222 truehaynes said at 9:38 PM on October 29th, 2017:

gotcha. your looking at it from a resource allocation POV.

  223. 223 Guy Media said at 9:42 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Yup. If this was baseball, I’d be all kinds of “screw it” with not worrying about guys helping the team at any price because there isn’t a real cap. It’s just we have guys who are free agents (Alshon, Bradham, Burton) and guys who are due for deals (Hicks) who we’ll need every dollar freed up to keep. Because you can roll every dollar of cap space forward, I don’t like seeing resources allocated in excess of any given player’s production.

  224. 224 truehaynes said at 9:45 PM on October 29th, 2017:

i cant see us resigning hicks this offseason. gotta let him play out his rookie contract next year to see if he comes back from his injury. Alshon and bradham comes back at 10m and 6m respectively. jernigan is ikely to get paid. Peters comes off the books :(. burton isnt worth it because hes not a good TE2. I want my TE2 to be able to block, especially with ertz as our te1. draft a blocking TE in the late rounds to replace him. if he wants a cheap deal then he can be the h-back/te3 that he is now.

  225. 225 Guy Media said at 9:49 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I totally forgot about Jernigan. He’s a “must” resign because of the draft capital you sacrificed to bring him in was much more than what you’d pay for a rental player.

  226. 226 truehaynes said at 9:51 PM on October 29th, 2017:

if the lions offered you megatron for a 4th and he wanted to pay for us do you pull the trigger?

  227. 227 Guy Media said at 9:52 PM on October 29th, 2017:

No, I like how both our D line and our WRs are playing right now.

  228. 228 A_T_G said at 9:58 PM on October 29th, 2017:

    Nope.

  229. 229 A_T_G said at 9:58 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I’d say we already got 15 spot drop in the 4th round worth of value out of him, but I put him as the top priority in resigning guys.

  230. 230 FairOaks said at 10:06 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Dropping 25 spots in the 3rd round? That’s not an absolute ton of draft capital — well worth if he’s only here this year. But yes, I think he will be a priority signing.

  231. 231 daveH said at 9:47 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Graham is great. Especially the way he started w us years ago and now is so valuable

  232. 232 truehaynes said at 9:29 PM on October 29th, 2017:

what trades coud the eagles feasibly make before the deadline? The NFC is wide open this year and were sitting at 7-1. Obviously LT seems like the most obvious trade but I dont see many guys on losing teams worth trading for. Technicaly the texans are 3-4 but they look like a payoff team so no dice on Duane Brown. Staley coud be a target but hes old. I would rather have vaitai as the swing tackle but I dont see any LT trades coming. However, a trade for a guy like fitzgerald could be interesting. Huge upgrade over smith and a great team player who im sure despertely wants a superbowl. I saw a rumor about megatron but that seems ridicuous. Anyone have any ideas?

  233. 233 Tumtum said at 9:33 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I don’t think Arizona has any intention of letting their all-time franchise player leave. A line backer would be nice, but we sort of need more draft picks not less.

  234. 234 truehaynes said at 9:36 PM on October 29th, 2017:

if we can get a gamechanger like fitz for a draft pick id do it. we have the chance to win a SB this year. Id take a realiable WR2 that could help us win this year over a 4th-5th next year. Also it would be the best thing for the cardinals considering they are cooked this year and fitz is unlikely to return. it would also be a kindness to fitz who has been the consummate pro his whole career. gives him a chance to go out a winner

  235. 235 Tumtum said at 9:44 PM on October 29th, 2017:

I think Arizona is wise enough to know that the rest of their home games would be blacked out, their fan base would revolt, and their ownership would have to watch their all-time great receiver flourish somewhere else. No…no… I think if Arizona had any intent of getting rid of Larry because they were cooked, they would of done it years and years ago.

  236. 236 truehaynes said at 9:46 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Have you heard he is available?

  238. 238 truehaynes said at 9:48 PM on October 29th, 2017:

just rumors. can you think of any other wrs who you might want?

  239. 239 Tumtum said at 9:56 PM on October 29th, 2017:

That also might be available? Hmm maybe Martavias Bryant from the Steelers, but we have already dealt with the under-preforming-bad-person bust WR. Not sure of any other that would be available.

I just don’t really think we need a WR in general. Smith isn’t preforming great, but is still stretching defenses, and improving as the season goes along. Hollins impresses absolutely every time he sees the field. I don’t think I want to give anything up for a WR.

  240. 240 oreofestar said at 9:58 PM on October 29th, 2017:

if we can upgrade for cheap sure…but WR definitely isnt my focus at the deadline if Im trying to make a move.

  241. 241 RC5000 said at 9:54 PM on October 29th, 2017:

How about Seantrel Henderson? I think they could make a move for one of Buffalo’s OTs not named Cordy Glenn.

He’s risky because he has Krohn’s and suspensions for medical marijuana as a pain killer for Krohn’s but we need a cheap OT now and he’s a swing tackle who started.

He’s been a habitual user since he played for Miami. We’d just be hoping he gets through this year without a suspension.

Buffalo might want too much. We probably would consider a trade of a conditional 7th. I wouldn’t trade anything higher because he’s risky and a free agent next year.

His cap number is only 778, 716 (so say about 400K ISH for rest of year).

    – UM interim coach Jeff Stoutland says true frosh OL Seantrel Henderson and Brandon Linder picking up offense so quickly is “incredible”

That’s some shameful shit, suspending the dude for that. Crohn’s is no joke. I’d imagine that with the digestive issues that come with opiates, it’s probably the worst thing for pain in that case.

  243. 243 Someguy77 said at 10:42 PM on October 29th, 2017:

It is crazy how we view opiates (more than 200k Americans have died from ODs from legal prescription drugs since 1999) vs marijuana.

So many deaths from that and a notable jump in suicides from middle-aged men that it has bent down the average life span of Americans last year statistically which is shocking. Doesn’t get nearly enough attention out of the medical community.

  252. 252 truehaynes said at 10:29 PM on October 29th, 2017:

i honestly just hate the guy. its more than the sum of all his bad plays, i just hate him and dont want to see him on the field. Hollins is easily as fast at this point in his career and is by far the better player.

  257. 257 Someguy77 said at 10:21 PM on October 29th, 2017:

Don’t get all of the interest in acquiring another WR especially Megatron. The Eagles have been able to distribute the ball effectively even after Sproles went out.

Complementary RB is a much bigger need for Blount (Smallwood/Clement/Barner are all underwhelming options) or another experienced T (the next guy on the depth chart is Hart and Womack/Wiz/Seumalo can’t play T.

Eagles don’t need a big name but they do need a bit more depth including at LB

  258. 258 D3FB said at 12:10 PM on October 30th, 2017:

He’s not a long term answer there but he can play it.

  259. 259 Someguy77 said at 10:35 PM on October 29th, 2017:

    Crazy thought –

Is this DL better than the ’91 Gang Green defense?

’91 DL obviously had superior starting talent at DE. No DE is close to White overall and Simmons is a better pass rusher than any single player at DE the Eagles have right now including Graham or Curry.

I would actually take Cox over Brown (Brown was a great player but took plays off and would get tired as the game wore). At the very least call it a wash. Ditto Jernigan over Pitts especially when it comes to rushing the passer.

Real difference is in the quality of the backups. At DE, the Eagles are giving and getting a lot of quality contributions from Long and Barnett at DE and Allen at DT. One of the issue with the ’91 team was that the backups out of Golic at DT were big downgrades.

This team can give their starters more of a blow and even Graham is only at about ~70% of the snaps.

  260. 260 FairOaks said at 12:05 AM on October 30th, 2017:

You take out Reggie White and this DL may be better. But… Reggie White.

  261. 261 Someguy77 said at 12:06 AM on October 30th, 2017:

Yeah Graham has turned into a very nice player but he isn’t drawing the consistent double teams White used to get and still putting up numbers.

  262. 262 Stephen E. said at 2:47 PM on October 30th, 2017:

Despite this team being 7-1 there still seems to be a bit of a disconnect between this team and the broader fan base.

    – Is it because fans weren’t expecting much this year and are ‘waiting for the shoe to drop?”
    – Is it because the the coach is relatively new and was’t well-liked last year by a segment of the fan base?
    – Is it because there aren’t really aren’t long-term Eagles’ players that fans readily identify with besides a small handful (e.g., Peters, Celek)?
    – Is it because the QB is relatively new as well and has kind of a vanilla personality?
    – Is it because this team lacks true superstar talent or players putting up big numbers?
    – Is it because there is a decent portion of this fan base cares more about ‘swagger’ than actual results (e.g., the continued popularity of Buddy Ryan)?
    – Is it the general malaise the NFL is suffering from right now a bit and the contrived controversy about kneeling/standing for the national anthem?

In my long tenure as a fan of all sports teams that call Phildelphia their home, I think there’s a built-in cynicism that prevents many from jumping on the bandwagon too soon, lest they fall off the cart on a bumpy ride down the road.
