Wow. That’s a lot of talent on the sideline. I’m fine with that. The defense is a veteran group that knows what they’re doing. Why rest those guys and play Fletcher Cox, Malcolm Jenkins and other starters? My guess is the players sitting out have some nagging injuries that could use a bit of extra rest.
Guys like Beau Allen and Steven Means are going to get a lot of reps. It will be interesting to see who plays at LB. I think they’ll mix and match players there. Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones will likely split time at CB.
Wendell Smallwood is back from Siberia. He could get plenty of work today. Will Shelton Gibson have a pass thrown his way?
I wrote a preview of the game for PE.com. This is an unusual situation, but Doug Pederson will have his usual message. The team has played well for him this year no matter who was on the field. It will be interesting to see how things play out today.
Nick Foles and the offense need to have some success.

If Foles is sharp, he could play as little as a quarter. If things are mixed, he will stay out there. Pederson wants Foles and the offense ready for the bad weather games of January.
This might be a meaningless game, but it would be great to see the Eagles win and get to 14-2. That would be the franchise record for wins. The Eagles currently have the #1 run defense in the league. I’d love to see them keep that ranking. It would be the first time since Gang Green in 1991.

It will be critical that Pederson hire good replacements. Andy Reid built a great staff in 1999. It was poached over the next five years and he didn’t hire the best replacements. That had a lot to do with the inconsistent play after the success of the early years.

I wasn’t watching the game because it’s meaningless. Seems less meaningless when I see that Nate freakin’ Sudfeld is in. So here I am, checking for reports…
Well Sudfeld actually has looked pretty good so far, Will Beatty not so much.
I remember the drafting reports for Sudfeld. This was a guy who was prone to stretches of awful play, and who had always gone by the “looks the part” aspect.
He looks skinny and very young, but he seemed to see the field much better than FOles and make quick decisions. He threw screens, short passes, and a nice medium one that went pretty far in the air. He did slip once and take an unfortunate sack, but he looked better than Foles (at least after Foles’ first drive).
He consistently throws catchable balls? In college, many of his low arc throws were micro-inaccurate, so WRs had to work hard to catch them……
Hm, one of his passes did go through someone’s arms. I suspect Bradford has this issue, too.

The year the Cardinals went to the Super Bowl they ended their season pretty dreadfully if I recall. Even being smoked by the Pats like 49-0 in New England. Anything can happen at home with this defense. Running game has to step up. You can afford drops with Wentz, Smith has to catch that ball for Foles. Same with Hollins for Sudfeld, two perfectly called plays.
That’s the way to look at it AFAIC. Sure, Foles might very well crap the bed and play them out of the playoffs in the divisional round. But he might not. And there is zero psychological benefit to making yourself miserable obsessing over the possibility.
I’m going in with realistic expectations (I expect them to make the NFC championship game at best) but I’m not going to mope about it. It’s still been a great season, far better than anyone hoped. Winning deep into the playoffs would be gravy at this point since they’re facing so much adversity.

Foles looks like hot garbage (completely independent of play calling) Sudfeld comes in, looks much sharper, stronger arm and runs some of the same plays Foles missed on, except he completes the pass. So get ready…the start Sudfeld train is starting up. Hell, the more I’m thinking about it I might actually jump on as well.

Foles hasn’t been good, but the O-line has been way lazy as well. I’m pretty sure that we won’t know what’s up until we get to the end of the divisional round game. I can’t get any kind of assessment out of the last 1.5 games.

I think the play calling is being sandbagged, but not the execution.
The two are somewhat interdependent. Vanilla playcalling makes crisp execution harder by making the defense’s job easier.
Doesn’t totally excuse Foles stinking it up, but there is reason to hope that when Pederson is actually playing for all the marbles he’ll be able to scheme up the plays that are needed as he did against the Giants.
I’m more annoyed with missed blocks vs. overrated pussies on Dallas’ D, but point taken.

hes been pretty good this year.
He’s been better than expected on offense, but outside of his first game, I think he’s been pretty bad as a returner.
#7 in the league in punt return yards.
That probably has to do with the one big return and the defense forcing a lot of punts. My biggest problem with him is that he lets way too many punts hit the ground. He’s routinely cost us 15 yards in field position doing that. Sproles would do the same, but also frequently broke big returns, so I could overlook it.
He doesn’t make bad decisions and at least until recently didn’t drop the ball. All you can ask for out of a replacement level punt returner.
There have been a few questionable “let it bounce / roll” decisions that have pinned us deeper than necessary.
Yeah but he doesn’t do dumb things like try to field the ball in a crowd inside his own 10 or anything. He has a good understanding of his limitations and doesn’t try to play outside them.
Then what’s up with the muffs?

Foles is a far more accomplished NFL QB than Joe Webb.
That doesn’t necessarily make him good enough to win the SB with, or even good. But it is a fact.

In that Chip Kelly offense, Joe Webb would have been a far better bet, assuming he could reliably make passes.
It’s not like I don’t remember Foles’ fundamental issues losing a playoff game that Vick would have won.
Nick Foles made Riley Cooper drop a pass, our special teams suck at coverage, and Billy Davis have no f-ing clue how to make adjustments?
Nobody’s forgetting Foles not keeping the offense going on pace, and that long drought.
Foles wasn’t dominant in that playoff game but he wasn’t the reason they lost it either. And Vick, at that point in his career, was shot.
Even if you take Foles 2013 season out of the mix he’s still far more accomplished than Webb.
Again. Webb is a good natural passer, and a dominant QB rusher, essentially on Cam’s level. As a sheer natural, Webb>>Foles as a passer. It seems to be the other stuff that’s the issue, from being consistent in throwing a good ball, to actually knowing what’s going on and what needs to be done. Be that as it may, the fundamental difference is that Webb can actually make plays and issue defeats to a defense playing well. Foles cannot. Anytime you don’t have too much Bad!Webb, he’s going to be better than Foles against good defenses.
If Webb is such a good natural passer, why does he have a career 63.1 QB rating and why has he been unable to stick with one team, or even remain a QB on some of the rosters he’s been on?
He obviously has some natural talent or he wouldn’t be in the NFL, but he’s not a good player. We have all the evidence we need to conclude that at this point.
Foles is what he is, which is a physically limited backup QB. Still gives you a better chance to win than a guy who’s never been anything better than a third stringer.
Are the OL starters still in the game?

This year was so wide open and ripe for the taking.
I keep hearing this but I’m not sure why. Other than Rodgers getting hurt and Elliott being suspended I’m not sure I see a single thing that really broke the Eagles’ way outside of Philadelphia. LAR, New Orleans, and Atlanta have all enjoyed comparatively good health and the NFC is really good this year.
I don’t think the Eagles are likely to go 13-3 again next year but if Wentz plays 16 games their floor is probably 10-6. With even a little luck they’re 12-4 and in bye land again. That’s how big a difference having a franchise QB makes.

This is the thing – I don’t even think it’s optimism, I just think it’s my realistic assessment of their chances based on probabilistic thinking.
If you tell me Brady, Rodgers, or Roethlisberger will play 16 games and their teams will otherwise have average luck with injuries, player development, etc., and ask me to predict how good the Pats, Packers, or Steelers will be based solely on that information, I’d say “12-4”. Same goes for the Eagles because I’ve seen enough from Wentz to place him in that class as a QB already.
They would have had home field and the biggest matchup problem would have the Rams. See how they play in cold weather too especially Goff who has played sparingly in bad/cold weather.
Even the Saints don’t scare me like years’ past because of Brees and their defense while improved isn’t a really good unit.
Sure, but is there any reason to believe they won’t have an equally favorable path next year? I expect the Rams to remain relevant but they’re a better candidate for regression than the Eagles are since they’ve had exceptional injury luck this year. Brees is nearing the end of the line. Ryan, Rodgers, and Wilson are all good, but on huge, cap-clogging contracts that make plugging holes elsewhere on their rosters tougher. Carolina doesn’t scare me. In the division, the Cowboys appear married to a mediocre QB/coach duo, the Giants will either be breaking in a rookie QB or relying on a broken down old one, and the Redskins are a dumpster fire.
Nothing in this picture scares me that much.
There are never any guarantees in anything but there are literally only 3 or 4 teams in the league who wouldn’t trade places with the Eagles going into next season, even with Wentz coming off an injury. He’s the best under 30 QB in the league bar maybe Russell Wilson. That’s an incredible foundation for sustained success and there is no reason to be pessimistic about the team’s long term prospects.
Could well lose but I’m not scared of getting crushed. I expect Doug to scheme up some plays that will work and our D and the weather can keep it close.
Unless Foles stops processing like a college sophomore then it’s gonna be bad. We’ve got a punchers chance but it’s low, and if we get NO we’re really fucked.
Foles has played much better than this in the past, just gotta hope that with two weeks to prepare and the full playbook being deployed he’s better. That’s not impossible, perhaps not even improbable. These other NFC teams are all flawed too.
Even solid or good Foles we’re probably still dogs.

After watching this team the past 3 weeks, you realize how Wentz just carried them this year.
With Foles and better health, this is a 7-8 win team that maybe somehow won 10 games.
But I think that only buries them against New England and (probably) Pittsburgh.

I believe the game time temp in that playoff game against New Orleans in Chip’s first season was in the 20s and Foles played fine. Weather forecasts two weeks out are also remarkably inaccurate.
I actually like our chances better if it’s a 15 degree, windy kind of day. Sure, Foles will likely suck under those conditions, but so will the opposing QB, and the Saints, Falcons, or Rams losing the full abilities of Brees, Ryan, or Goff hurts them more than losing the full abilities of Foles hurts us.
Foles did not play “fine”.

No, they do have a chance to win. Even if Foles sucks they have a chance to win on the basis of their defense alone. The Steelers won a Super Bowl with Roethlisberger playing as badly or worse than Foles did in the last two weeks.
Obviously the chances aren’t great if they don’t get good QB play but to say they don’t have a prayer is just dumb and irrational.
Fandom is, by its nature, oftentimes irrational. I’m as positive and hopeful as anyone for 349 days out of the year. On 16 gamedays a year, I’m a gloom and doom fatalist. I think it’s some sort of defense mechanism. Been that way since Christmas Eve 1978.
Flacco is 3 for 15 for 17 yards and his QB rating is 30 points higher than Foles’ was today.

Just reinforces how disappointing the loss of Wentz is.
Ironically, it might be better if we didn’t have home field advantage.
TDs vs. interceptions has a huge impact on passer rating (as it should, but that can magnify the differences between performances). That’s a pretty lousy performance for Brady as well.
The fact that Foles struggled and so did Prescott, Brady, and Flacco suggests that conditions were part of the problem and our offense might’ve struggled with Wentz as well. Weather will be a factor in the playoffs as well but it will hamper both teams.
Watching the Red zone channel, it’s very clear that if Sproles does not come back, the team has to draft a return specialist. Barner and Clement are JAGS, at best.
Seattle’s offense has stunk it up nd they’re down 20-7 at halftime.
