Super Bowl Bound!!!

Posted: January 21st, 2018 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 347 Comments »

The Eagles did it. They whipped the Vikings and are now headed to the Super Bowl.

Nick Foles was brilliant.

The defense dominated after a poor opening drive.

Amazing performance by a special team.

Fun now…analysis to come later.

Congrats Eagles fans…you deserve this.

  8. 8 RobNE said at 9:53 PM on January 21st, 2018:

I already had people telling me the job isn’t done. I said why do pats fans think “working as a team” is why you win and not BB or Brady. They said how many rings do eagles have? ( that’s not responsive). No it will suck. I’ll likely watch at home without my son. Can’t go to the neighbourhood party be outnumbered 50-1

  9. 9 D3FB said at 9:55 PM on January 21st, 2018:

I brought up them needing to cheat again and was told “that’s not factual” (I mean jfc what planet do they live on) and my girlfriends parents and cousins both are having parties (and are all pats fans), pretty sure I’m gonna have to come down with the “flu” that morning

  10. 10 RobNE said at 9:59 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Plus I’ll get invited to like 10 parties now. Everyone will want a token Eagles fan to make fun of. They have no fear of losing.

  11. 11 D3FB said at 10:00 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Yeah I’m already trying to explain that me telling her family members to eat my ass (winning) or to fuck off and die (losing) isn’t a good look

  39. 39 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:49 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Out of curiosity, who do you hope to see starting at QB next year? Big decision coming for you guys.

  64. 64 sonofdman said at 9:59 PM on January 21st, 2018:

The Eagles would probably be willing to deal the Vikings Foles for another first round pick.

  65. 65 Poiple Viking said at 10:34 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Lol. somebody will pay that price. I like Keenum. I can’t blame him much. D line got zero pressure and the O line was giving it up on the inside and especially the outside. Where ya gonna go??

  66. 66 sonofdman said at 10:35 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Yeah, it is hard to put the blame on Keenum in a game like this.

  67. 67 Poiple Viking said at 10:40 PM on January 21st, 2018:

The Vikes, Zimmer, invested heavily in the defense with money, FAs and top, draft picks for a couple of years. They didn’t get it done today. You want a top D then you need stops, sacks and turnovers in Big games. Got none of that today. They are a better D than that. At least they didn’t quit. Great to see that

  68. 68 RobNE said at 10:03 PM on January 21st, 2018:

And how did u find us??

  69. 69 Poiple Viking said at 10:32 PM on January 21st, 2018:

  75. 75 Poiple Viking said at 10:49 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Lololol. I love that. Ya, we know that one also

  76. 76 Poiple Viking said at 10:37 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Vikes have a young guy named Sloter. A strong arm but I don’t know if he will be anything. Too early. I would sign all three QBs. Keep,Keenum and deal Bradford or Bridgewater or both for, draft picks. They need O line depth badly. It’s better than last year but two guys out with injuries.

  77. 77 RobNE said at 10:40 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Don’t you think Teddy is better than Keemun?

  78. 78 Poiple Viking said at 10:47 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Well maybe, a stronger arm certainly, smart, lovable leader. But he was just starting to come around when he blew up that knee. He made some Bradford like throws in the final preseason game he played and had much more mobility.m But it’s been two years. He might be amazing in the right place or never find the right situation. It will be waaaay interesting to see what the Vikes decide.
Case’s strength is his ability to keep his eyes downfield, feel the pressure and adjust while doing progressions. It’s really his secret power. Makes him a better choice than a healthy Bradford, at least behind this O line.

  79. 79 Stephen E. said at 4:08 PM on January 22nd, 2018:

The rookie is the only one under contract. There won’t be any trades without a re-signing.

  80. 80 Tdoteaglefan said at 10:00 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Of all the years I have had the honor of being a fan with you all, this has been the most special. This is a team that just beats the odds through sheer will power and talent. I never felt this was the most talented team we ever had but I felt those guys were going to come out and give it their all. Nick. I was wrong about him. I didnt think he had what it took. He proved something to me. He showed guts. Win or lose. Nick Foles deserves some respect.

  85. 85 scratcherk said at 9:54 PM on January 21st, 2018:

When I was telling people why I thought the eagles would win the last two weeks, it was hard to explain… This team is just special…

  86. 86 P_P_K said at 10:05 PM on January 21st, 2018:

I’m saying the same thing about winning in two weeks.

  87. 87 lewis don said at 4:33 PM on January 25th, 2018:

Nick Foles looked horrifying the last couple games of the regular season and honestly I am queasy thinking about which Nick we will get. But When you think about it. We have a reason to think this team is good. I think throughout the season, the offense at times felt pedestrian. But Doug has flashes. The Flashes from everybody this year was better than any I remember as an eagles fan. Except I don’t think we have a rusher as good as Hough Douglas or Jevon Kearse. I do think Barnett has Flashed that he could that good if not better. His bend is Godly and his length is filthy. Graham and Curry are above average and terrible to deal with. Fletcher Cox is a beast, probably the best DT we have ever had. As eagles fans we remember the bad tackling years, the god awful offensive outings where we couldn’t convert on third down. The bad redzone defense, the CB that couldn’t track the ball, and the list goes on. When we got so much of that and then turn around and see those things eliminated. Subconsciously we feel like that foggy doubt dissipate. I think we can see it because we have withstood all the bad. We know it aint that. But I argue we haven’t seen the best. And thats whats special. We know what we couldn’t do. but WHAT CAN WE DO. CAN NICK FOLES SHAKE A DEFENDER BREATHING DOWN HIS NECK AND THROW A BEAM TO ALSHON JEFFERY WHO BROKE HIS ROUTE BECAUSE HE HAS IQ. Before it happened. I would have said no. now, I say I think he has more special sauce where that came from.

  88. 88 Bert's Bells said at 9:55 PM on January 21st, 2018:

I hope the team spends the next two weeks recording the hit track “Dougie’s Watching You”.

  89. 89 RC5000 said at 9:56 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Truly thought our lines could beat theirs and possibly dominate! Besides Nick’s obvious poise and performance that was key. Though everyone was awesome!

  90. 90 xeynon said at 10:00 PM on January 21st, 2018:

The Eagles offensive line was mauling people and the defensive line was in Keenum’s grill every time he dropped back to throw. If both units play like that again in two weeks we will have a parade on Broad Street.

  91. 91 Reservedly Optimistic said at 10:18 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Doug has this whole team in position to do just that! I hate the Patriots. It would be great to get our first against Patriots.

  101. 101 D3FB said at 10:07 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Their defense can bleed and can’t pass rush worth a damn, they can’t really run it, the one scary thing is the eagles will have to keep scoring. No lead is safe.

Also getting to end the dynasty with Big Dick Nick is going to be so perfect.

  102. 102 xeynon said at 10:08 PM on January 21st, 2018:

In both games, players who made mistakes early came back with big plays to redeem themselves. In this game, Smith with the drop comes back for some nice catch and runs and the beautiful TD catch and Burton not getting his feet made a nice play with a hard run for a first down. Against the Falcons, Ajayi fumbles and comes back and runs like a madman, and Burton let’s the punt hit him for a turnover and comes back and blocks punt.

  156. 156 Masked Man said at 10:15 PM on January 21st, 2018:

    My random point by point-
    1) Thought that our DBs could run with the Minny WRs all day long. They did.
    2) Thought that Doug Pederson could be the difference not only in this game, but in the playoffs in general. So far he is.
    3) Jim Schwartz has tightened the defensive rotation, especially the D
Line, like a basketball team in the playoffs that starts to go only 7-8
players deep during the big games. And it’s working.
    4) Chris Long had a strong game. Pressured and hit Keenum to cause the Pat Robinson interception and TD. Then fell on the fumble after Barnett sacked
Keenum. Eagles scored on the next offensive drive. Big plays.
    5) Nick Foles has been getting better every week, in case nobody noticed. Almost perfect passing rating today? Wow!

Still got a job to finish, but WOW, what a ride this season has been! Not enough thanks can be given to Tommy for his insight and reasoned takes on each game. This site is by far the most reliable and full of great people.

I can remember as a kid in the very early 90s just thinking how great it would be to win a playoff game. That big win vs. the Saints (who were also colossal chokers in the postseason) was like a Christmas gift. Ditto for the big win over Detroit in ’95. Then when Andy and McNabb came on board with the dominant defense I thought for sure they would eventually get to a SB. It took 4 tries, but sure enough they did.

I guess where I’m going here is…we have to savor the moment! It’s only happened 1 other time in my life so I’m obviously elated. But this time, we have to seize the moment and finally bring one home for the all the past legends who so desperately wanted to win one for Philly.

A big SB win couldn’t happen to a better group of players/coaches. I really think we have a special group of guys. So many class acts. Sure would be nice to finally hoist that elusive Lombardi trophy.

And yet we’re 5.5 point underdogs in the SB, the early conventional wisdom seems to be that the Patriots will win easily, and people are complaining that it won’t be a competitive game

Got news for you guys: if the Patriots don’t do a better job blocking Cox, Graham, Barnett, Curry and Long than the Falcons and Vikings did, and the Pats’ defense (which will be easily the worst of the three the Eagles have faced this offseason statistically) doesn’t do a better job pressuring the QB or getting off blocks in the run game than the Falcons’ and Vikings’ defenses did, you’re all going to be wrong again.

Man, if we manage to pull this off and win this SB it will be SO sweet to prove all these morons wrong.

  219. 219 P_P_K said at 10:48 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Yep. I don’t want to get cocky, because I respect the hell out of Brady and Belichick and we could absolutely lose the game. Maybe just the former lineman in me, but I’m already pissed off by some of the pre-SB analysis I’m seeing from the national media. It’s all about how the Eagles are big underdogs because their QB is better than our QB.

That is true, but these people completely ignore that our O line is way better than their D line and our D line is way better than their O line. The Eagles have one of the best offensive lines and one of the best defensive lines in the entire league. They are dominant in the trenches. That’s really important. Do people not remember how Tom Brady lost his two Super Bowls?

  261. 261 xeynon said at 11:17 PM on January 21st, 2018:

It just annoys me that people who get paid to comment on/write about this sport know so little about it.

Having a franchise QB is one of the most important pieces for winning at the highest level in football. Having great offensive and defensive lines is only slightly less important. But because it’s a lot less sexy, nobody talks about that or acknowledges that as big of a mismatch as Brady-Foles is in their favor, the matchups on the lines are equally big mismatches in our favor.

I can certainly see a scenario in which Brady plays brilliantly and beats us. But a scenario in which our OL knocks the hell out of their defense and keeps the ball away from him with long drives while our pass rush is in his face every time he drops back is also on the table. This Eagles team is very similar to the two Giants teams that beat him, but even better along the lines.

This truth has been around for a very long time. “Football is won and lost in the trenches.” Every football expert should know this. Many times the skill of the lines are a wash so you can point to other reasons why a team might win, but that will not be the case in this SB.

  294. 294 Bert's Bells said at 11:40 PM on January 21st, 2018:

I think it was less seeing something in the defense, more guessing the Vikings were scheming to stop the run and the quick pass which would leave the opportunity for big plays out there.

  295. 295 xeynon said at 11:34 PM on January 21st, 2018:

When Foles is on his game, he is a really capable QB. He was dropping dimes tonight.

  296. 296 FairOaks said at 11:38 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Mostly has to do with protection, IMHO. When he’s not running and has time (or it’s rare), he can be very very good. If holes open up in the lines, and he starts running backwards, it can get ugly quick.

We have won the battle in the trenches the last two games, which has been the absolute key, and we’re going to have to do that against the Patriots to have a chance.

  297. 297 xeynon said at 11:41 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Protection is a big part of it, but even when the Vikings did collapse the pocket tonight, he stepped up, escaped the pressure, and made good throws. I think confidence, rhythm, and play calls which play to his strengths as a more instinctual, see-and-throw type player are also huge.

I think the battle of the trenches in the SB is a mismatch in our favor, honestly. It’s one reason I’m actually more confident they’ll win the SB than I was that they’d win this game.

  298. 298 Bert's Bells said at 11:43 PM on January 21st, 2018:

Foles moved better in the pocket than I can remember ever seeing from him. He wasn’t running back, he didn’t have happy feet, he climbed the pocket, had good lateral steps, different arm slots, pulled it and reloaded with confidence. Good protection, yeah. But his pocket presence was tops.

I was one of the few that loved the move. I took it as the FO acknowledging, and hedging against Wentz’ injury history. I figured we’d see seasons like this and there aren’t many QBs I’d rather see taking over than Foles.

Yeah, he did have his share of injuries in college. Also had that injury during preseason of last year. He plays hard and is a big target.

So, I should mention, that my aunt and uncle (Redskins, Saints fan respectively) got me a rather nice but semi-gag gift for christmas. It like one of the wall display cases that you can velcro stuff to or w/e. Obviously the dig is that the thing is devoid of anything superbowl related. But they filled it with a couple of old Eagles patches and signs aaaaand a rookie Nick Foles card that is in a card protector an anything.

    Joke’s on them!

Wait until the spring, when the Saints and Redskins are bidding for the Foles trade to come their way.

Had velcro been invented yet when the Redskins last won a Superbowl?

1991 which was well after velcro’s 80s halcyon days.

He can sleep on it and say “on second thought, let’s see how he does in the Super Bowl against a good coach”.

One quibble. Eagles players mocking Vikings fans with the Skol thing.
Unprofessional. Also this kind of disrespect has a way of biting the perpetrators on the butt.
