Nick Foles might have actually outplayed Matt Ryan.
The defense was great.
I forgot just how nerve-wracking playoff games are. Wow, what an emotional 3 hours.
Great finish. Now on to the NFC title game!!!

Nice insight after a crazy Game
I feel like I just ran a marathon. I love these birds, they compete like no other team we’ve had in a long time.
I’m exhausted right now and yet I can’t sleep
I haven’t been this emotionally drained after a game since the super bowl. When we stopped them there was a brief burst of joy, and then I just felt really tired lol.
Phan’s key observations:
1) Football is won or lost in the trenches.
2) Defense wins the postseason.
3) Foles haters are the dumbest fucks on the planet.
Fly. Eagles. Fly.
I don’t want to go overboard with praise bc there were plenty of mistakes to go around (careless fumbles, missed pat and sloppy special teams), but I’m really happy with the team effort and their composure in big moments. They stayed the course and have rightfully earned their spot in the NFC Championship. I feel great for a lot of the vets who haven’t experienced much playoff success in midnight green.

It’s really how I thought we had to win it. D, running the ball, some plays by Nick, bit ugly. But didn’t expect to have to overcome turnovers .
Yep. The eagles playoff success hangs on good defense, running the football successfully, and foles managing the game competently. Do those 3 things and the eagles can beat any team.

The commentators focused a lot on the run/pass option, but going hurry up on some of the last drives likely helped Foles a lot as well. great job by Doug

Ags and Clement did some little things to help and Jeffery was not spectacular but he came up big when Foles needed it.
I wouldn’t call Ags’ sweeps little things. I’d call them huge things. Absolutely LOVE how that guy has emerged this year.

That was virtually identical it seemed. 13ish seconds left, pass play to Alshon goes incomplete. 7 seconds left, pass complete in long FG range with 1 second left.

Mills was in position with a hand in his face. Also forced him out, his foot landed in chalk.
I’m not trying to disqualify Mills coverage. It was as good as it could have been for someone his height. Wasn’t aware foot was out of bounds.
Yup, came down on the chalk. I have been hard on Mills all season, bht he was clutch today.
I like him more then Darby.
Mills excels in the red zone where receivers cant beat him with long speed and things get physical. He is not afraid of fighting through contact at the release point and he never gives up on a play where the QB extends, like Ryan did on that one. Its notable that they had him in man coverage vs julio on the outside, yet double teamed their no 2 receiver who was running the in-breaking route from the slot. They trust him to handle that situation.

Refs did a good job. Announcers did a good job. Cox was amazing.
They were a little ticky tacky early, but they rounded into shape as the game went on.
Thought the 3rd down catch near the end should have been overturned, but it wasn’t egregious.
That was a coin flip. As an Eagles fan, of course I wanted it to be called incomplete, but I would have been outraged had the Eagles lost a catch on that.
I don’t think you can overturn that. He had a pretty firm grip with one hand all the way through it seemed. Thought stands was the right call.
It looked like a catch to me, but who can tell anymore.

When? I know a lot of fans say that, but he was giving tons of praise to Cox, Foles and the Eagles throughout the game.
Every movement except the end of the game when we obvisouly won. Its ok Michaels had our back all game

The way Dug got Foles going by channeling 2013 is just so inspired. I loved how the Eagles ran over them one series, and Foles Chip Kelley’d them the next. I love to see a coach who can adjust. I also love the aggressiveness and that Dug hasn’t dialed back that stuff. Sometimes you’ll lose from the gutsy calls, but more often you’ll win–you have to take both to get the advantage from the overly conservative playcalling in the NFL.
It was also great to see that the horrible sloppiness of the first half got taken care of. Without those 4 turnovers, this game would have been much different. Perhaps we do have a chance next week if we can keep things tight.

He’s not wedded to doing it “his way”. He just wants to win. I get the feeling he’d run the triple option or the statue of liberty if he thought that’d be the best way to move the ball past the sticks or into the end zone.
Plus he’s very solid on stuff like challenges, timeouts, and 4th down decisions.

Agreed. My only criticism there was they took a time out to avoid the delay of game penalty. Why waste a timeout for those five yards? Makes it a 24 yard FG instead of a 19 yard FG. Not the right call IMO.

My take on that was a lack of experience on Barner’s part. It looked like the wind was blowing the ball around like a knuckleball and Barner freaked out. He didn’t call the guys off early enough so they got tangled up in the fracas. I doubt that would have happened if Sproles had been back there.

That’s the big QB equalizer. Which is why I slightly prefer the Saints. We are pretty even with both teams, but the big part of that in the Saints equation is the Brees is so much better than Foles. The Linc blunts that advantage a tad, and I think the Eagles are a better team all around to swing the odds in our favor.

Philly is better overall than both teams, but I’d rather not see Brees, eve if the weather is bad.
Their defense scares me. Serious danger of a shut out in poor weather.
Minny has the best D in the playoffs. Offense isn’t as scary and who the hell knows what Keenum will do.
N. O. is scarier on offense, but lacks depth. One injury totally changed their D earlier this year.

Run the ball, get accurate, decisive throws from Foles to keep the defense honest when necessary, play hellacious defense, and rely on the cold, wind, and the hostility of the crowd to help stifle the opposing offense.

Unbelievable that the Eagles won after starting the game like this: having all three runningbacks fumble the ball on the first three drives, take a huge sack to go out of field goal range, give Atlanta the ball on the ten yard line on a failed punt recovery and subsequent penalty in the end zone and then miss an extra point. This is how they started the game. And this is how good the defense played today. The D made up for all of those mistakes. If you discount the TD from the punt mistake, they essentially allowed Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and those RBs exactly 3 points in the entire game. That is an outstanding accomplishment that I somehow expect people to dwell too little on in the coming days. What. A. Game. Those guys deserve credit. Cox earned that money today. So did Graham. And Curry. And Jernigan. And all of the rest of them. Wow.

What a game. That first half was probably the worst football I’ve watched this year, and we still managed. Coaching move of the game was deciding on the wind advantage for the 2nd/4th. They played a pretty darn bad game, and were able to over come. Have we ever had a team that was able to win with such in-game adversity? -2 on the turnovers, and both were pretty back breaking. If anything the defense fed on the challenge.
I just really like this team of men. They are even rubbing off on Nick.
They can run the bsll and play defense. Foles just has to stay competent and if things break right they’ll play in the super bowl with a decent chance to win it.

Which hot take has aged worse: Lombardi’s ”Pederson is the least qualified coach in NFL history”, or Cian Fahey’s ”Wentz is Blake Bortles but not as good”?
It’s a tough call.
As bad as Fahey’s was, Lombardi’s was worse. Pederson was coming off a solid season given he was playing a rookie QB who was named the starter about a week before the season.
Wentz still had questions going into his 2nd season. He really was meh down the stretch last year. Anyone who says they saw him exploding into an MVP candidate this year that’s not a complete homer, please buy me a lottery ticket.
Going 7-9 your first year coaching pretty much proves you’re not the worst coach in the league.
I think that’s a fair argument.
The thing about Fahey’s, though, as that he continued to double, triple, and quadruple down on it this season, even as it became apparent to anyone with eyes that Wentz was an emerging superstar and an MVP candidate. I didn’t agree with him last year, at all, but he at least had an argument in that Wentz was spotty at times. But he’s refused to admit he was wrong.
I don’t listen to Lombardi’s podcast. Has he been similarly stubborn, or has he manned up and admitted he got this one wrong?

I like Foles, but he’s got some serious flaws to his game. Unfortunately, they seem to have gotten worse instead of better.
I liked Foles when he was willing to take a sack instead of fading back forever when pressured. His accuracy has always been streaky. He’s not a great athlete, but tries to run as if he’s a good one which makes me nervous as !@#$.
I think under competent coaching with a staff who believed in him, he could have developed into a competent starter. He was never going to be a H.O.F. caliber QB, despite his ridiculous 1st year under Kelly.
Would u take Hoyer, Fitzpatrick, Savage or Yates over Foles?

I’m not even a real Foles apologist I just think it’s crazy to compare him to the above guys who have never done a thing in the NFL

Fitz – maybe. A couple years ago, yeah. Right this moment, probably not.
Savage – no.
Yates – no.
I think Fitzpatrick or Dalton is about the right comparison point for Foles.
These are all guys who can be highly effective with competent coaching, but are also capable of looking really bad at times, and can’t bail out a team the way higher tier QBs can.
Mike Lombardi needs to be tied to a poll and beaten with a belt until he recants.

The defense only gave up a TD after the S/T turnover. ATL started in their own redzone….. What a great performance from the best unit on our team, maybe the best unit left playing football
The defense is the reason the eagles still have a chance to go tova super bowl and even win it.
Our D’s really good. Minny’s might be even better. We’ve got more O talent, but Nick vs. Keenum isn’t exactly a thrilling matchup.
I think on paper Minny’s D is better than ours. But if it comes to that, I think playing at home and outdoors brings the Eagles’ D about up to parity.
Foles and Keenum at QB I think is fairly even, slight edge to Keenum because of his mobility. But I don’t think it’s a huge disparity at all. Both guys will need their skill players to make plays and the game will ultimately be decided in the trenches.
And the FG they gave up was also off of a turnover.

It’s more than just effort, I think.
I hate the “this guy is just a football player” cliche, but it does seem to describe something about players like Clement and Mills. They have a certain intelligence and mental makeup that allows them to play faster, quicker, and stronger than they test on a track or in a weight room.

The Patriots winning another title is my emotional hedge vs. the Wentz injury. If some slapdick team wins the title, I’ll always insist the Eagles would have won it with Wentz. If the Pats get one last one, I’ll tell myself that it wasn’t going to be the Eagles year anyway.
Eagles with Wentz could handle this Pat’s team. They would not be able to stop Philly’s O. Brady would put up pts too, but I’d take Wentz’s cool as a cucumber 3rd down approach in that game.

The Titans are composed of steaming shit, as was expected, but I would be furious about that first half officiating. How do 2 different Patriots false start, the call is made correctly, and then they reverse it and call it on the Titans? Huge momentum changer in the game, absolutely garbage officiating. If it wasn’t a playoff game I would have turned the TV off right there and done something more productive with my time like organizing balls of lint. When bad officiating has that big an impact on the biggest stage, it just takes any enjoyment at all out of watching the game.

Oh yeah and a huge shout out to the kid who called Julio Jones a bum on the postgame show, if karma rewards the deserving that kid will be a legend. The balls to stare dead eyed into the camera and call Julio Jones of all people a bum for not coming down with the game winning catch, that’s a hall of fame move in my book.
Julio Jones is T.O., but without the ego or the insane narcissistic theatrics.
