Positions and the Draft

You draft for talent, not need. Sort of.

We’d be lying if we didn’t say need played a role. I guess part of the confusion can be what really is a need.

The Eagles didn’t have a good pass defense in 2018.

  • Yards allowed – 28th
  • Interceptions – 25th
  • Passer rating – 15th

A lot of people doing mock drafts are inclined to give the Eagles a CB early in the draft.

Les is exactly right. The Eagles already have a set of young CBs that they like. That doesn’t mean CB is off the table, but I’m betting the Eagles don’t see it as a need the way many analysts do.

Cre’Von LeBlanc looks like he could be a terrific slot corner. Rasul Douglas, Jalen Mills and Sidney Jones are all recent draft picks who have shown potential on the outside. They have issues, but the point is that any one you draft won’t be a sure thing either. Avonte Maddox could play CB or FS. The Eagles have some options. Why not stick with the young players already in place and see what they can do now that they’ve got some experience under their belt?

I’ve seen some people giving the Eagles an OT in the first round. I recently wrote about how that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

The draft gives you the ability to add young talent. You can focus on adding talent from an overall perspective. You can also focus on needs, both in the present and the future.

The Eagles have a good pair of safeties, but both Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod are older players. The Eagles could draft a safety to help with the future.

The Eagles have very little at RB right now. They could draft a RB to help right away.

Current needs. Future needs.

This draft class is loaded at DL. The Eagles could use DL help, now and in the future. You love it when talent, need and opportunity come together. The Eagles should have talented players to choose from. They can help the team now and in the future.

I’m not saying the Eagles won’t use an early pick on a CB or OT for sure. Those are impact positions and the team could fall in love with a prospect. I just think it is more likely for them to add help on the DL.

Bell would be a terrific addition. Expensive, too.

I don’t see it happening.

That said, it would be cool to see this offense with an impact RB.
