Avert Your Eyes

Sunday, ugly Sunday.

The Eagles offense had a rough day against Seattle, one of the weaker defenses in the league. There is one bit of good news. The young receivers were not the biggest problem today.

The bad news…Carson Wentz and the OL were major problems. It wasn’t that long ago that Wentz was being predicted as league MVP and the OL was considered one of the best in the league. Both were bad on Sunday.

I don’t know what to say about Wentz. He missed some easy throws. He made some poor reads and decisions. He turned the ball over like he had bet on Seattle and wanted to make sure his money was safe. I was hoping he would have a good game and get the most out of the rebuilt offense.

Didn’t happen.

Listen, all QBs are entitled to have a bad day. Carson Wentz is still a good player and I’m still glad he’s an Eagle. But Sunday was incredibly frustrating. Instead of him playing at a high level and bringing the best out of the guys around him, he was highly erratic. There were moments when he was flat out bad.

Andre Dillard started the game at RT. That did not go well. He was benched at halftime and Big V was much better in the 2nd half. Brandon Brooks left the game with an illness. Big V played RG for much of the 1st half. Matt Pryor took over at RG in the 2nd half. Pryor and Big V did some good things after halftime, but Pryor did have a costly holding call. That killed a potential scoring drive.

The OL struggles go beyond the backups. Jason Peters struggled at times. Jason Kelce got beaten on some plays. Issac Seumalo missed some blocks.

Doug Pederson called his worst game of the year and that sure didn’t help matters. He kept trying to fool Seattle and those plays just weren’t working.

The offense was a mess, from the top down.

The Eagles defense played well, except for a few plays. They kept Russell Wilson bottled up for most of the game. This was only the second game all year with the Seahawks scoring less than 20 points. They averaged 27.5 ppg coming into Sunday.

Jim Schwartz called a creative, aggressive game. The Eagles sacked Wilson 6 times and pressured him all game long. The Eagles came up with some takeaways, but it just wasn’t enough.

They gave up a TD on a trick play and another TD on a long run. Those two plays proved to be the difference in the game.

The Eagles are now 5-6 (for the second year in a row). The schedule gets much easier after this, but that doesn’t matter if the Eagles don’t play better. They better hope they get some players healthy this week, especially on the OL.

But wait…

When it rains, it pours.

Wentz hurt his hand in the game, but didn’t miss a snap. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. I’m sure Pederson will be entirely forthcoming on the situation and let us all know exactly what to expect.

We’ve all heard of the Super Bowl hangover. Now we are finding out that the Super Bowl hangover has a hangover of its own.

Lovely.
