More on Robert Quinn
Posted: October 27th, 2022 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 13 Comments »The Eagles trade for DE Robert Quinn has been met with pretty much universal praise. The team paid a fair price for a player who helps an area that needed a boost and fits schematically.
That said, there is no guarantee this pans out. The Eagles have made moves in recent years that made a lot of sense and didn’t work out. I didn’t expect Ryan Kerrigan to light it up last year, but he contributed next to nothing during the season. Eric Wilson seemed like a perfect fit when the Eagles signed him a year ago. He struggled as a starter and got cut.
The risk is worth the reward.
If Quinn does pan out, he will boost a solid pass rush. The Eagles have led by 14 points in every game this year. They need fresh legs to help rush the passer. Quinn gives them that and he knows how to finish (102 career sacks).
Quinn wasn’t lighting it up in Chicago, despite playing a ton of snaps. Maybe that was part of the problem. You don’t want a 32-year old DE out there logging a ton of snaps. You want to rotate. Quinn also wasn’t getting great help.
Robert Quinn has faced 58 double-teams this season. Nick Bosa and Micah Parsons are each in the 40s.
Imagine what that does for everybody else on the Eagles' front.

A year ago, Quinn had Akiem Hicks pushing the pocket and Khalil Mack coming off the other edge. That meant Quinn only had to beat the LT to get to the QB, who couldn’t move up with Hicks coming at him. Both players left in the offseason so Quinn no longer had proven threats opposite of him or up the middle. Teams focused on Quinn and limited him to one sack.
Now Quinn will play opposite of Haason Reddick and Brandon Graham. He’ll benefit from Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrave pushing the pocket. This takes pressure off Quinn and puts him in position to succeed. He’s not coming to Philly to fix a problem, but rather to be part of the solution.
Former Eagle DE Chris Long played with Quinn in St. Louis and thinks this was a smart move.

Quinn still shows the burst and bend to get into the backfield.
Somehow these weren't holding calls – but you can see Quinn still has the juice at the top of rushes… pic.twitter.com/vcG5TB7lxf

The Eagles like to mix up 4 and 5 -man lines. If we just look at the 4-man DL, you could have a rotation like this.
1 – Haason Reddick – Fletcher Cox – Javon Hargrave – Josh Sweat
2 – Brandon Graham – Jordan Davis – Milton Williams – Robert Quinn
The Eagles haven’t used Davis in a 4-man line so far, but even if you put Marlon Tuipulotu in there that is an excellent backup DL.
It will be interesting to see if Quinn plays on Sunday.

You don’t have to teach him the whole defense. He just needs to learn a few basic calls to be able to come in as a situational rusher.

In order to make room for Quinn, the Eagles had to cut DE Tarron Jackson. He played well this summer and might have a future as a rotational pass rusher. He just didn’t show enough for the coaches to want him on the field this year. When he did play, he didn’t flash. LB/DE Patrick Johnson got reps as well and I thought he did flash.
Hopefully the Eagles can add him to the practice squad.

Speaking of the PS…

I thought this might mean Britain Covey would be cut and Ward would take over as the PR. Could be the Eagles are just adding Ward as insurance in case there is an injury and they want a veteran WR who knows the system.

Interesting.
Dallas Goedert is the star at TE. Things are a bit open behind him. Jack Stoll is more blocker than receiver. Rookie Grant Calcaterra is more receiver than blocker.
Jackson is an athletc pass-catcher who really flashed in the 2021 preseason. He would be an interesting addition to the offense. You do have to wonder what would happen with the roster. Do you carry four TEs?

Good news.
Lane Johnson has fully returned to practice.
He commented earlier today that his time in concussion protocol the last 2 weeks as compared to instances in the past was much more intense. pic.twitter.com/1iMNBB6NSc
