Eagles Stay Undefeated, Win 29-17

The Eagles just went on the road on a short week and won by 12 points. And it wasn’t fun at all. Houston is one of the worst teams in the league and was playing short-handed. But this was a prime time game against the 7-0 Eagles so Houston gave it everything they had.

That wasn’t enough to win, but it was enough to make the Eagles work hard all game long. Last week the Eagles built a big lead and rested key starters. This was a 60-minute game. No rest for anyone.

The game was tied at halftime, 14-14. Philly broke it open in the second half, outscoring the Texans 15-3. Even with a 12-point lead late in the game, the Eagles couldn’t break the Texans will. Those jerks kept playing hard, even when they knew they couldn’t win. Talk about selfish. Didn’t they know we wanted a blowout so we could watch the Phillies as well?

Last week Houston got completely dominated. As I feared might happen, that got them fired up. They were going to do everything possible to win this game or keep it as close as possible. The Eagles run defense certainly helped them out. Eagles defenders got stuck on blocks and missed tackles. RB Dameon Pierce was 27-139 and carried the offense. The Eagles struggled to contain him.

Ugh.

The Eagles defense did make just enough plays to win the game. Javon Hargrave led the way with 3 sacks. CJ Gardner-Johnson had a crucial INT that set up a short TD drive for the offense. James Bradberry picked off a pass in the red zone to halt a Houston scoring drive.

Jalen Hurts played well in his return to his hometown. He looked great at times, going 21-27-243 with a pair of TDs. He did have two fumbles, losing one. Those were his first fumbles of the year.

Dallas Goedert was the star receiver tonight. He was 8-100-1 and every catch seemed to be important. He caught passes down the field as well as short throws. AJ Brown also contributed, going 4-59-1.

The Eagles did run for 143 yards. Miles Sanders led the way, going 17-93-1. I was surprised the Eagles didn’t run even more, but the passing game was clicking so the coaches kept the offense balanced.

This wasn’t a bad performance by the Eagles. They were just sloppy and that kept the game closer than expected. Jason Kelce snapped the ball early a few times. Jordan Mailata gave up 2 sacks. Marcus Epps forgot how to tackle. Bradberry lost his receiver and gave up a big play. Avonte Maddox missed a tackle on third down that kept alive a scoring drive. Jake Elliott missed a FG.

All of these issues can get cleaned up. There wasn’t any question of talent or effort.

It is important to give the Eagles credit for making big plays on a night when they didn’t have their A-game. CGJ’s pick was really impressive.

He now leads the NFL with 5 INTs.

Hargrave came up with timely sacks that ended drives.

With the Eagles leading 21-17 late in the third quarter, Goedert came up huge. He caught 5 passes on the drive, including the TD in the early fourth and helped them extend the lead to 29-17.

Houston had two drives after that, but couldn’t score. The Eagles sealed the game with a late drive that ran out the clock.

The Eagles are 8-0 for the first time in franchise history. They now have plenty of time to rest until a Monday night meeting with Washington in Week 10.
