At 13-10, we have a great opportunity to see how good the
coaches are at making adjustments on BOTH sides of the ball.

The Defense cannot stop the Chargers (save the turnovers –
    can’t depend on those).

The Offense looks good but not dominant – Vick missing 2 TDs
    to DJax.

    ________________

I’d love to see Aaron Rodgers in this offense.

He’s got the quickest release in the NFL . . . and very good
    wheels.

    ________________

Ironic that in Games 1 and 2, Kelly’s come out throwing . .
. just like Reid would have.

    Chuckle!!!

  2. 2 GEagle said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I’d want to see Kapernick in It…UGH !!!! Damn you Shefter!!!

  3. 3 ACViking said at 2:42 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    why Schefter?

  4. 4 GEagle said at 2:44 PM on September 15th, 2013:

He reported today that we had a trade in place last year to trade our 2nd for KAp, but pulled out because we thought we were going to get Wilson

  5. 5 47_Ronin said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Shouldn’t that be damn you Roseman?

  6. 6 GEagle said at 2:49 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Lol yeah…but I wish I had never known

  7. 7 ACViking said at 2:43 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Eagles could have taken Kaepernick instead of Watkins . . . even with one of those trade-downs

  8. 8 Anders said at 2:40 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    We need more pressure

  9. 9 GEagle said at 2:40 PM on September 15th, 2013:

That’s how my Eagles HIT! Attaboy Meco!!M

  10. 10 scratcherk said at 2:40 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Good hit, but the result sucks. That looks bad.

  11. 11 GEagle said at 2:42 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Agreed

  12. 12 scratcherk said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Would it be a dick move to challenge that?

  13. 13 GEagle said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Don’t think you can challenge that it was a fumble

  14. 14 Anders said at 2:42 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yes you can, you can challenge if he had possesion before he lost it

  15. 15 scratcherk said at 2:42 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Also there is clear recovery by eagles.

  16. 16 GEagle said at 2:43 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Oh thanks…..damn I hope that as soon as this game is over, Malcolm Floyd is ok

  17. 17 Tyler Phillips said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Would be nice to be able to bring in Curry for some inside pressure.

  18. 18 Julescat said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

so is Kelly no longer an offensive genius?

  19. 19 ACViking said at 2:43 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Totally overrated.

And the Eagles SB odds will be worse than before opening day after this game

  20. 20 xeynon said at 3:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I have to wonder what the hell the people who bet on them to go to the Super Bowl at inflated odds after last week were thinking. How many times does this have to happen before people remember that it is a LOOOONG season?

  21. 21 ACViking said at 2:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    T-Law:

When the proverbial bell rings . . . DeMeco Ryans shows up.

    3-4 or 4-3. Doesn’t matter. A real professional — and good, too.

  22. 22 xeynon said at 2:43 PM on September 15th, 2013:

That is the kind of hit that the NFL will never be able to legislate out of the game – concussions/head injuries are always going to be a risk.

  23. 23 Anders said at 2:43 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I think Ryans will get a letter from the NFL

  24. 24 xeynon said at 2:44 PM on September 15th, 2013:

How can you fault him for that? Floyd was running in a crouch leading with his head, and Ryans had his eye on the ball until a split second before the hit. Not a dirty hit, just an unfortunate situation.

  25. 25 Anders said at 2:45 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Its Roger Goddell we are talking about

  26. 26 ACViking said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Goddell’s a pimp . . .

  27. 27 ACViking said at 2:44 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yes . . . hard tackles on receivers just ruins the 45-38 games we get.

    Kidding of course.

  28. 28 Matt Williams said at 2:44 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Anyone have any insight into why Matthews and Graham were in for Barwin and Cole at the end of the First Half?

  29. 29 Crus57 said at 2:45 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Think they rotated the D, Square was in there too on the DL.

  30. 30 SteveH said at 2:45 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Wasn’t even a big hit, just awkward how Floyd had his head lowered as Ryans came in.

  31. 31 GEagle said at 2:46 PM on September 15th, 2013:

That needs to be our ball…hope Malcom is ok, but they don’t get to keep the ball because we hit him too hard…wtf

  32. 32 Anders said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

With the ways the refs have rules today, I wouldnt challenge that and lose a TO again

  33. 33 ACViking said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Bingo.

  34. 34 Neil said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I was thinking the same thing. He took at least two steps with control of the ball.

  35. 35 ACViking said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Exactly like the New England v. Jets game w/ Edelman’s 3rd Q fumble.

As Rex Ryan said when asked if it was a fumble . . . “I guess my view was obstructed.”

  36. 36 xeynon said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

By the letter of the law I think that was an incomplete pass, honestly. Floyd had just secured the ball but didn’t have time to make a “football move” before Ryans arrived and knocked the ball loose.

Put it this way – if that were an Eagles receiver, we’d be screaming “incomplete pass!!!”.

  37. 37 GEagle said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I thought he got hit because he was fighting for yardage,,,no?

  38. 38 GEagle said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Meco is our best player today, followed by Barwin,Cole and Boykin…

  39. 39 J. Brian said at 2:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Thoughts and prayers with Floyd. Hate to see hard clean hits result in injury.

  40. 40 Weapon Y said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I’m sure nobody feels worse about Floyd’s injury than DeMeco Ryans. It’s not his fault either. It’s just a sad part of the game.

  41. 41 Crus57 said at 2:48 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Does serve to highlight one reason the rule about RBs leading with their heads was introduced.

  42. 42 47_Ronin said at 2:52 PM on September 15th, 2013:

One good sign after the hit was that Floyd was at least moving both legs while on the ground.

  43. 43 Crus57 said at 2:50 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Floyd doesn’t make a move imo. Incomplete pass, I’d say.

  44. 44 Anders said at 2:50 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    agree on that replay

  45. 45 SteveH said at 2:50 PM on September 15th, 2013:

jesus christ, they’re flagging Williams for everything.

  46. 46 GEagle said at 2:50 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Come on CDub!

  47. 47 ACViking said at 2:51 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Has Wolff seen any plays?

  48. 48 GEagle said at 2:51 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Nate looked benched in the second half, but I think he is back in there to start the half

  49. 49 Weapon Y said at 2:51 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Cary Williams might set a record for number of pass interference calls in one game. Bradley Roby is looking like a good pick for next year’s draft.

  50. 50 deg0ey said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

As an OSU fan, I’d absolutely love that pick. Roby is a beast!

  51. 51 GEagle said at 3:08 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I would love Roby opposite Cary with Chung and Byrd backing them up

  52. 52 Weapon Y said at 3:08 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Roby in the first. Ekpre-Olomu in the second. Sign Jairus Byrd and hope there’s another good safety in the free agent market. That’s my armchair GM plan for the secondary. We need a draft like 2002 that completely revamped the secondary in one year.

  53. 53 deg0ey said at 3:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

It’s a nice thought, but Roby’s going top-10. If we want to draft him, we’re probably not picking in the second round.

EDIT: Assuming we don’t suck for the rest of this season.

  54. 54 Weapon Y said at 3:15 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I don’t think we can rule that out entirely. But I’d say realistically we’re a middle of the pack team. I’d be willing to trade up just to get Roby. I’ve had enough of 5 years of bad secondary play. I’m impatient.

  55. 55 ACViking said at 2:51 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Who was the penalty machine at CB last year? Nnamdi or DRC?

    Elbert Foules used to be.

  56. 56 Crus57 said at 2:52 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Nnamdi or DRC? Yes.

  57. 57 ACViking said at 2:53 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    nice

  58. 58 GEagle said at 2:52 PM on September 15th, 2013:

They were both too soft and didn’t have enough dignity to even commit penalties…they just ushered opposing WRs safely into the ENDZONE

  59. 59 DamonL86 said at 2:52 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    wow terrible

  60. 60 GEagle said at 2:53 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Thank Nate Allen

  61. 61 xeynon said at 2:54 PM on September 15th, 2013:

We need Nnamdi to run onto the field and point his finger so we know whose fault that was.

  62. 62 Anders said at 2:55 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    That was on Boykin.

  63. 63 GEagle said at 2:55 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Not if he thought he had imaginary safety help

  64. 64 Anders said at 2:55 PM on September 15th, 2013:

He looked into the backfield and lost his man.

  65. 65 xeynon said at 2:53 PM on September 15th, 2013:

If we needed a reminder that Cary Williams is a below average CB this game is it. The guy was no better than the 3rd best cover guy on a league average pass defense last season, so it’s not surprising. At least he competes though.

  66. 66 Andy124 said at 2:54 PM on September 15th, 2013:

He is what we thought he was.

  67. 67 GEagle said at 2:55 PM on September 15th, 2013:

A better then he is showing today, bend but don’t break CB

  68. 68 SteveH said at 2:55 PM on September 15th, 2013:

would love to see a defensive stop that isn’t a turnover. Just to mix things up.

  69. 69 Anders said at 2:56 PM on September 15th, 2013:

would love some more pressure on Rivers. We are getting zero pressure

  70. 70 xeynon said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I would settle for an incomplete pass.

  71. 71 ACViking said at 2:56 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Gates body language since the fumble is terrible

  72. 72 Andy124 said at 2:56 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Do they get bonus points for the jumping time out?

  73. 73 GEagle said at 2:56 PM on September 15th, 2013:

He even calls timeout like a wimp

  74. 74 Andy124 said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    lol

  75. 75 DamonL86 said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Shades of last year

  76. 76 GEagle said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    No pressure…easy TD

  77. 77 47_Ronin said at 3:00 PM on September 15th, 2013:

And the mystery is why VC is inactive again. And I hope the Eagles didn’t waste a 2nd round pick on a DE that they can’t fit into the new defensive scheme.

  78. 78 Anders said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

That happens when you switch scheme. And the Eagles is getting zero pressure with the likes of Trent Cole and Fletcher Cox. Doubt Curry would help

  79. 79 47_Ronin said at 3:08 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I don’t know about that. I agree with what Tommy wrote a few days ago. I’d like to see the Eagles run some 4-2-5 nickel looks and have Cole, Graham and Curry rushing the passer. I don’t believe C. Mathews is a better player than Curry.

  80. 80 Iskar36 said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Wow… Last year flashbacks

  81. 81 RichF said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Nobody even remotely close

  82. 82 47_Ronin said at 2:57 PM on September 15th, 2013:

San Diego had a very good game plan for the Eagles, if not for the TOs they should be up by 14-17 points

  83. 83 ACViking said at 2:58 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Halftime D-adjustments look unsuccessful so far — if any.

  84. 84 J. Brian said at 2:58 PM on September 15th, 2013:

We can likely all agree that we knew this secondary wasn’t going to be a strong area for this team this year. Just didn’t think that the secondary would be experiencing what looks to be serious mental breakdowns (holding, WR running free)… uh wow….

  85. 85 GEagle said at 2:58 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Not really the secondary…CBs would be ok if Safety wasn’t so bad

  86. 86 Anders said at 2:59 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    our CBs isnt good either.

  87. 87 J. Brian said at 3:00 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I don’t think we know that – can’t look into the d-playbook to see assignments. Safeties do look much worse than CBs

  88. 88 xeynon said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Not too surprised. Of the five top guys in this secondary, only one (Boykin) could be called a good player. Chung, Allen, and Williams are all below average starters. Fletcher is solid, but probably a nickel corner in a good secondary. We’re going to see a lot more of this any time we go up against a good quarterback this year.

  89. 89 Antonio Reyna said at 2:58 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    I thought Juan Castillo wasn’t the D Coordinator anymore ……= / …this defense ain’t working ….

  90. 90 Andy124 said at 2:58 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Somewhere in Seattle, Nnamdi is pointing at a picture of Kurt Coleman.

  91. 91 GEagle said at 3:00 PM on September 15th, 2013:

After his game last week his head is still tucked in the sand hiding like an Ostridge

  92. 92 J. Brian said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    hahaha

  93. 93 SteveH said at 2:59 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Too depressing, can’t articulate disappointment.

  94. 94 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 2:59 PM on September 15th, 2013:

LOL, with 8 men in coverage they can’t seem to get someone within 10 yards of a receiver.

  95. 95 Crus57 said at 3:00 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    And that’s without Floyd.

  96. 96 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I wonder which two receivers they were triple teaming? Maybe that’s what the coverage was supposed to do and hope Rivers didn’t see the wide open guy by the sideline…

  97. 97 GEagle said at 3:00 PM on September 15th, 2013:

We need to get pressure. Simple as that

  98. 98 DamonL86 said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    unreal

  99. 99 GEagle said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Nate allen can’t see the field..

  100. 100 ACViking said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    This is NOT Kelly’s defense. This is a 3-4 w/ 4-3 personnel and a mediocre (?) back 4.

Would it make a difference if Dion Jordan was out there?

    SD’s game-plan is great. And they’re executing.

  101. 101 SteveH said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

replay shows… nate allen blew coverage on royal.

  102. 102 Anders said at 3:03 PM on September 15th, 2013:

No the announcers are terrible, Allen was in a deep middle coverage. That was not his man at all

  103. 103 SteveH said at 3:01 PM on September 15th, 2013:

wow Vick misses jackson deep a 3rd time.

  104. 104 Iskar36 said at 3:02 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Slightly over thrown but Jackson has to come up with that one.

  105. 105 SteveH said at 3:02 PM on September 15th, 2013:

the slightly over thrown part is key.

  106. 106 Iskar36 said at 3:07 PM on September 15th, 2013:

It still hit his hands and should have been caught. Maybe off balance and in a way that he couldn’t continue to run for the td but definitely catchable.

  107. 107 TommyLawlor said at 3:03 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Nah, that was just one of those plays where you’re inches off but no one made a clear mistake.

  108. 108 Iskar36 said at 3:05 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Oh come on, it hit Jackson’s hands. It’s not a gimme play but it is still a play you should make as a pro bowl caliber wr

  109. 109 Neil said at 3:08 PM on September 15th, 2013:

It hit the very tips of his fingers, not his hands.

  110. 110 Westport_Johnny said at 3:03 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Good replay & commentary on last TD by san diego. Looks like #29 blew it

  111. 111 J. Brian said at 3:03 PM on September 15th, 2013:

yup! Good commentary by the broadcast team?! amazing!

  112. 112 Anders said at 3:08 PM on September 15th, 2013:

No Allen had 1/3 deep coverage.

  113. 113 eagleyankfan said at 3:04 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I’m glad Allen had a “solid” pre-season. this guy sucked last year and he still sucks.

  114. 114 SteveH said at 3:05 PM on September 15th, 2013:

this game is a kick in the balls over and over.

  115. 115 eagleyankfan said at 3:05 PM on September 15th, 2013:

just wondering if we’re going to see the “Allen wasn’t as bad as some the fans think” article…

  116. 116 xeynon said at 3:05 PM on September 15th, 2013:

San Diego’s secondary is almost as bad as ours.

  117. 117 GEagle said at 3:06 PM on September 15th, 2013:

So I predicted Eagles winning 42-20…….LOOKING GOOD!!!!!! “so your saying there’s a chance?”

  118. 118 SteveH said at 3:06 PM on September 15th, 2013:

welp, how many TD’s have we left on the field now? There was the one to casey, the 3 deep balls to DSJ, the TD to DSJ that got called back. Am I missing any?

  119. 119 xeynon said at 3:09 PM on September 15th, 2013:

The first 8 minutes of this second half have an eerily familiar feel to them. Horrendous pass defense leading to an easy TD for the opponent, followed by an offensive possession featuring unbalanced playcalling, a bad penalty that negates a TD, and a draw play on 3rd and short that gets blown up in the backfield.. anybody checked to see if Chip Kelly has started growing a walrus mustache?

  120. 120 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 3:10 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    nice tackle by WOLFF!

  121. 121 GEagle said at 3:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

yes it was. Followed by good coverage by Boykin…Punt that chicken!!

  122. 122 RichF said at 3:10 PM on September 15th, 2013:

There’s that non-to stop we’ve been waiting for.

  123. 123 SteveH said at 3:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Boykin again, he’s our best defender.

  124. 124 GEagle said at 3:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    Meco

  125. 125 xeynon said at 3:12 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Kendricks, Barwin, and Cox are decent too. But he’s definitely our best defensive back by a large margin.

  126. 126 Iskar36 said at 3:14 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I have to ask, what has Cox done? I haven’t seen him do mug today (or a whole lore outside of one quarter last week either).

  127. 127 xeynon said at 3:25 PM on September 15th, 2013:

He made a nice play collapsing a run play in the first half, but it hasn’t been his best day. He is a good player though.

  128. 128 Iskar36 said at 3:33 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I love Cox’s potential, but you have to show up on tape first before you can be in the discussion or best player on D

  129. 129 xeynon said at 3:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

If I were Whisenhunt, I’d keep throwing until the Eagles D proves it can force more than one incompletion for every ten dropbacks.

  130. 130 GEagle said at 3:12 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    T-Law:

How much of the Eagles’ receivers seeming to wide open is conceptual . . . versus the formations/match ups . . . versus the threat of the run?

During the Reid era, as good as he was at his best at scheming, I don’t remember receivers CONSISTENTLY being so open downfield (beyond 8-10 yards).

And if teams are gonna 1-safety high in a 3-deep scheme, D-Jax should have a truly monster season.

  247. 247 Andy124 said at 3:59 PM on September 15th, 2013:

  277. 277 xeynon said at 4:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Because you want a chance to return a kickoff if the Chargers make this FG.

  278. 278 DamonL86 said at 4:12 PM on September 15th, 2013:

well they didn’t accomplish that and gave them more yards

  279. 279 xeynon said at 4:18 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yes, they did. Like I said above, they don’t call those timeouts, and the Chargers run the clock down to a few seconds before kicking that FG, the game’s over, with no chance at a miracle runback, Hail Mary, or hook and ladder play at the end. A low percentage chance to win is better than no chance.

  280. 280 Andy124 said at 4:11 PM on September 15th, 2013:

So we’re either giving them a chance to turn the ball over, or preserve time to try to run the kick back.

  286. 286 xeynon said at 4:15 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yes, it does. As is, the Eagles at least get a chance to return a kickoff. If they don’t call those timeouts, the Chargers run it down to :02 before kicking the FG and the game is over as soon as that ball splits the uprights.

  287. 287 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 4:18 PM on September 15th, 2013:

possibly, but normally at the end of the game like that they kick the FG on 3rd down with a little extra time just in case something goes wrong. I understand the reasoning, but when they are getting ready to attempt a 49 yarder I don’t think you give them the extra yards. If its a 30 or so, sure, but at 49 yards the odds are probably 50/50 he even makes it.

  288. 288 xeynon said at 4:21 PM on September 15th, 2013:

If you know they’re going to run the ball and feel confident you can stuff it at the LOS, you’re not giving them extra yards. As it was they only gave them one or two extra – that’s very unlikely to be the difference between making that FG and missing it. I’m not sure what the difference in success rates is for 49 yard FG tries vs. 47 yards but I doubt it’s very big.

  289. 289 J. Brian said at 4:18 PM on September 15th, 2013:

maybe – but to my logic if the eagles didn’t call the timeouts than the chargers would have which then imputes they have add’tl timeouts when they get the ball back.

  290. 290 xeynon said at 4:20 PM on September 15th, 2013:

The Chargers would not have called a timeout until there was a few seconds left. It was not in their interest to leave any time on the clock. If the Eagles don’t stop the clock there, the game is over without any chance at a miracle play at the end.

I can see going downfield fast, but once DeSean was at the 15, it is inexcusable for us not to run the ball. I don’t understand this at all. Re: Late time outs v. Turnover v. a Longer Kick

Chip calls the TOs. Chargers run two plays using a hand-off, one a QB surrender.

Kelly surrended 3-4 yards — making the FG 46 yards instead of a short 50.

He also forced SD to execute two handoffs.

So what’s the better play — Two TOs and hope for a botched handoff, leading to a a 46 yard FG . . . versus no TOS and a short 50 yard FG attempt?

(I doubt the TOs were used for a Stanford KO return or 1-in-a-million TD on the hook-and-multi-lateral play.)

I say it’s worth a shot that the hand-offs muffed, since the FG percentage differential is probably just about as marginal as the likelihood of a fumble.

MAYBE “EAGLES REWIND” WILL GIVE US THE STATISTICAL DATA ON THAT DECISION.

Whatever it is, Kelly’s very attuned to this kind of minutiae.

  319. 319 RobNE said at 4:26 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Tell me about the fine tuning thought process behind not running the ball after DeSean was down at the 15. Why not take some clock off? I thought he might run it every play at that point. Either you score a TD or leave no time at all and kick the FG.

  320. 320 Andy124 said at 4:32 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Agressive coach going for TD to win the game. Passing game was clicking way better than run game for the most part.

  321. 321 xeynon said at 4:34 PM on September 15th, 2013:

That’s not a good answer. In that situation, aggression = stupidity. When your defense sucks, leaving time on the clock for the other team to come back is asking to lose the game.

  322. 322 Andy124 said at 4:41 PM on September 15th, 2013:

    That’s not a good answer.
Depends on what question you think I’m answering. I’m providing my guess of Kelly’s reasoning. Whether you agree with the reasoning or not, I’d say it’s a pretty decent guess as to why it went down the way it did.

  323. 323 xeynon said at 4:49 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yeah I agree with you – I just think Kelly is dead wrong if that was his thinking.

  324. 324 BobSmith77 said at 4:26 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Probably argue pushing the kicker out to the 50-yard line but you would need a couple of situational probability to due the actual math to see what was the ‘smarter move’ at least on paper.

  325. 325 xeynon said at 4:33 PM on September 15th, 2013:

I would guess the smart play there is always to stop the clock to ensure you get the ball back. A few yards (which it’s no guarantee you even surrender – a D expecting the run could just as easily stuff the runner for a loss and knock the offense backwards) is unlikely to make the difference on the FG try.

It certainly works that way in Madden (which is admittedly not necessarily a realistic simulation). I wouldn’t be surprised if Chip Kelly has crunched the numbers on this precise situation however.

To me, the far more egregious clock management blunder was not running more time off the clock before kicking the tying FG. They should have mixed a few running plays in there, and gotten the clock down to :30 or so before taking a shot at the end zone and then kicking the FG. As bad as this defense is their chance of stopping Rivers with 1:50 to go and a full complement of time outs was minimal. The timeouts before the FG at the end were inconsequential in comparison.

chip Kelly – mental mistakes/clock management, no commitment to the run game, especially in the last few minutes/red zone to rob as much time from SD for a field goal. Better served to take a TO on the front side of the 2MW to get vick/celek back on the field. Lots of penalties for this team,
DJAX – cost the game with a bonehead penalty that setup the last charges TD.

Defense – zero pash rush, safety play abysmal, gashed in run game.

Show me the plays. Does Allen need to learn to tackle better? yes, but he is still by far the best cover safety we got.

Can’t stomach losing at home. This Has to stop

Harping on Vick misses the point. Yeah he missed some throws and cost the Eagles some point but he also made some nice throws too. Also didn’t turn the ball over again today even though that fumble he had was fortunate to go out of bounds in the 1st half.

2nd week in a row where the guys on the team with the best supposed hands (Avant) coughed up another fumble. It’s painful to watch how slow he is out there. This team misses Maclin in a big way right now.

The offense deserves maybe 25% of the blame for this loss, and of that portion Vick deserves maybe 25% – he was far down the list of reasons we lost this game. But he did miss a few critical throws – the bombs to Jackson and that badly thrown ball to a wide open Casey on the first possession in particular. If McNabb had thrown that pass we’d be hearing jokes about worm burners all week.

Still, I agree, the defense deserves to be in the stocks after this game, not Vick.

  371. 371 Anders said at 4:47 PM on September 15th, 2013:

It was not a McNabb worm burner 😛 it was more a knee capper 😛

Vick put up 30 with no turn overs and didn’t take any hits he didn’t need to, hard to put any of this at vick’s fault. I would like at the D and DJAX on this one, plus Kelly’s terrible clock management.

  373. 373 GEagle said at 4:44 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Much better QBs and Olines won’t play as well as Rivers and The Chargers this year….We didn’t beat ourselves. We fought hard against a very well prepared team. it won’t be like this every week

  374. 374 Crus57 said at 4:45 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Let’s also not forget if it’s not for DJax’s penalty and Henery not recovering that KO fumble, this would be a different game.

  375. 375 Anders said at 4:53 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Or Henery not missing a FG, or Vick hitting Jackson on one of those long tds, etc.

ok, everybody move back over, all the “pro’s” will be off our bandwagon again…good game … lots of fun. Not sure what Chip was doing at then end — or those 3 offensive play calls … but this team wasn’t going 16-0, dust off the lose and get ready for KC

  377. 377 BobSmith77 said at 4:53 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Eagles’ fans will be pissed and rightly so but nothing compared to the anger if they lose to Reid on Thurs night in a blowout.

Really hope Fletcher can start too. Missed him in a big way today picking on Boykins in selective matchups and forcing the Eagles into a bunch of mismatches when they were putting 3 and 4-WR sets on the field. Limited depth the Eagles do have is really exposed in those nickel situations.

  378. 378 Neil said at 4:54 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Boykin was the highlight of the game for the defense.

  379. 379 BobSmith77 said at 4:59 PM on September 15th, 2013:

Yeah he did a nice job defending the deep out in the 1st half and caused a huge turnover. He also got beat today a couple of times too.

It crazy to think what the Chargers would have done if Floyd hadn’t come out of the game either in the 3rd. Physically he and Gates were doing whatever they wanted to today vs this secondary.

Is there a bigger disparity in quality for 4 o’clock games than SF/SEA vs. JAX/OAK? Maybe the two best teams in the league in the first game and the two worst in the second.
