Can we stop Philip Rivers?
At 13-10, we have a great opportunity to see how good the
coaches are at making adjustments on BOTH sides of the ball.
The Defense cannot stop the Chargers (save the turnovers –
can’t depend on those).
The Offense looks good but not dominant – Vick missing 2 TDs
I’d love to see Aaron Rodgers in this offense.
He’s got the quickest release in the NFL . . . and very good
Ironic that in Games 1 and 2, Kelly’s come out throwing . .
. just like Reid would have.
I’d want to see Kapernick in It…UGH !!!! Damn you Shefter!!!
He reported today that we had a trade in place last year to trade our 2nd for KAp, but pulled out because we thought we were going to get Wilson
Shouldn’t that be damn you Roseman?
Lol yeah…but I wish I had never known
Eagles could have taken Kaepernick instead of Watkins . . . even with one of those trade-downs
We need more pressure
That’s how my Eagles HIT! Attaboy Meco!!M
Good hit, but the result sucks. That looks bad.
Would it be a dick move to challenge that?
Don’t think you can challenge that it was a fumble
Yes you can, you can challenge if he had possesion before he lost it
Also there is clear recovery by eagles.
Oh thanks…..damn I hope that as soon as this game is over, Malcolm Floyd is ok
Would be nice to be able to bring in Curry for some inside pressure.
so is Kelly no longer an offensive genius?
And the Eagles SB odds will be worse than before opening day after this game
I have to wonder what the hell the people who bet on them to go to the Super Bowl at inflated odds after last week were thinking. How many times does this have to happen before people remember that it is a LOOOONG season?
When the proverbial bell rings . . . DeMeco Ryans shows up.
3-4 or 4-3. Doesn’t matter. A real professional — and good, too.
That is the kind of hit that the NFL will never be able to legislate out of the game – concussions/head injuries are always going to be a risk.
I think Ryans will get a letter from the NFL
How can you fault him for that? Floyd was running in a crouch leading with his head, and Ryans had his eye on the ball until a split second before the hit. Not a dirty hit, just an unfortunate situation.
Its Roger Goddell we are talking about
Goddell’s a pimp . . .
Yes . . . hard tackles on receivers just ruins the 45-38 games we get.
Kidding of course.
Anyone have any insight into why Matthews and Graham were in for Barwin and Cole at the end of the First Half?
Think they rotated the D, Square was in there too on the DL.
Wasn’t even a big hit, just awkward how Floyd had his head lowered as Ryans came in.
That needs to be our ball…hope Malcom is ok, but they don’t get to keep the ball because we hit him too hard…wtf
With the ways the refs have rules today, I wouldnt challenge that and lose a TO again
I was thinking the same thing. He took at least two steps with control of the ball.
Exactly like the New England v. Jets game w/ Edelman’s 3rd Q fumble.
As Rex Ryan said when asked if it was a fumble . . . “I guess my view was obstructed.”
By the letter of the law I think that was an incomplete pass, honestly. Floyd had just secured the ball but didn’t have time to make a “football move” before Ryans arrived and knocked the ball loose.
Put it this way – if that were an Eagles receiver, we’d be screaming “incomplete pass!!!”.
I thought he got hit because he was fighting for yardage,,,no?
Meco is our best player today, followed by Barwin,Cole and Boykin…
Thoughts and prayers with Floyd. Hate to see hard clean hits result in injury.
I’m sure nobody feels worse about Floyd’s injury than DeMeco Ryans. It’s not his fault either. It’s just a sad part of the game.
Does serve to highlight one reason the rule about RBs leading with their heads was introduced.
One good sign after the hit was that Floyd was at least moving both legs while on the ground.
Floyd doesn’t make a move imo. Incomplete pass, I’d say.
agree on that replay
jesus christ, they’re flagging Williams for everything.
Come on CDub!
Has Wolff seen any plays?
Nate looked benched in the second half, but I think he is back in there to start the half
Cary Williams might set a record for number of pass interference calls in one game. Bradley Roby is looking like a good pick for next year’s draft.
As an OSU fan, I’d absolutely love that pick. Roby is a beast!
I would love Roby opposite Cary with Chung and Byrd backing them up
Roby in the first. Ekpre-Olomu in the second. Sign Jairus Byrd and hope there’s another good safety in the free agent market. That’s my armchair GM plan for the secondary. We need a draft like 2002 that completely revamped the secondary in one year.
It’s a nice thought, but Roby’s going top-10. If we want to draft him, we’re probably not picking in the second round.
EDIT: Assuming we don’t suck for the rest of this season.
I don’t think we can rule that out entirely. But I’d say realistically we’re a middle of the pack team. I’d be willing to trade up just to get Roby. I’ve had enough of 5 years of bad secondary play. I’m impatient.
Who was the penalty machine at CB last year? Nnamdi or DRC?
Elbert Foules used to be.
Nnamdi or DRC? Yes.
They were both too soft and didn’t have enough dignity to even commit penalties…they just ushered opposing WRs safely into the ENDZONE
Thank Nate Allen
We need Nnamdi to run onto the field and point his finger so we know whose fault that was.
That was on Boykin.
Not if he thought he had imaginary safety help
He looked into the backfield and lost his man.
If we needed a reminder that Cary Williams is a below average CB this game is it. The guy was no better than the 3rd best cover guy on a league average pass defense last season, so it’s not surprising. At least he competes though.
He is what we thought he was.
A better then he is showing today, bend but don’t break CB
would love to see a defensive stop that isn’t a turnover. Just to mix things up.
would love some more pressure on Rivers. We are getting zero pressure
I would settle for an incomplete pass.
Gates body language since the fumble is terrible
Do they get bonus points for the jumping time out?
He even calls timeout like a wimp
Shades of last year
No pressure…easy TD
And the mystery is why VC is inactive again. And I hope the Eagles didn’t waste a 2nd round pick on a DE that they can’t fit into the new defensive scheme.
That happens when you switch scheme. And the Eagles is getting zero pressure with the likes of Trent Cole and Fletcher Cox. Doubt Curry would help
I don’t know about that. I agree with what Tommy wrote a few days ago. I’d like to see the Eagles run some 4-2-5 nickel looks and have Cole, Graham and Curry rushing the passer. I don’t believe C. Mathews is a better player than Curry.
Wow… Last year flashbacks
Nobody even remotely close
San Diego had a very good game plan for the Eagles, if not for the TOs they should be up by 14-17 points
Halftime D-adjustments look unsuccessful so far — if any.
We can likely all agree that we knew this secondary wasn’t going to be a strong area for this team this year. Just didn’t think that the secondary would be experiencing what looks to be serious mental breakdowns (holding, WR running free)… uh wow….
Not really the secondary…CBs would be ok if Safety wasn’t so bad
our CBs isnt good either.
I don’t think we know that – can’t look into the d-playbook to see assignments. Safeties do look much worse than CBs
Not too surprised. Of the five top guys in this secondary, only one (Boykin) could be called a good player. Chung, Allen, and Williams are all below average starters. Fletcher is solid, but probably a nickel corner in a good secondary. We’re going to see a lot more of this any time we go up against a good quarterback this year.
I thought Juan Castillo wasn’t the D Coordinator anymore ……= / …this defense ain’t working ….
Somewhere in Seattle, Nnamdi is pointing at a picture of Kurt Coleman.
After his game last week his head is still tucked in the sand hiding like an Ostridge
Too depressing, can’t articulate disappointment.
LOL, with 8 men in coverage they can’t seem to get someone within 10 yards of a receiver.
And that’s without Floyd.
I wonder which two receivers they were triple teaming? Maybe that’s what the coverage was supposed to do and hope Rivers didn’t see the wide open guy by the sideline…
We need to get pressure. Simple as that
Nate allen can’t see the field..
This is NOT Kelly’s defense. This is a 3-4 w/ 4-3 personnel and a mediocre (?) back 4.
Would it make a difference if Dion Jordan was out there?
SD’s game-plan is great. And they’re executing.
replay shows… nate allen blew coverage on royal.
No the announcers are terrible, Allen was in a deep middle coverage. That was not his man at all
wow Vick misses jackson deep a 3rd time.
Slightly over thrown but Jackson has to come up with that one.
the slightly over thrown part is key.
It still hit his hands and should have been caught. Maybe off balance and in a way that he couldn’t continue to run for the td but definitely catchable.
Nah, that was just one of those plays where you’re inches off but no one made a clear mistake.
Oh come on, it hit Jackson’s hands. It’s not a gimme play but it is still a play you should make as a pro bowl caliber wr
It hit the very tips of his fingers, not his hands.
Good replay & commentary on last TD by san diego. Looks like #29 blew it
yup! Good commentary by the broadcast team?! amazing!
No Allen had 1/3 deep coverage.
I’m glad Allen had a “solid” pre-season. this guy sucked last year and he still sucks.
this game is a kick in the balls over and over.
just wondering if we’re going to see the “Allen wasn’t as bad as some the fans think” article…
San Diego’s secondary is almost as bad as ours.
So I predicted Eagles winning 42-20…….LOOKING GOOD!!!!!! “so your saying there’s a chance?”
welp, how many TD’s have we left on the field now? There was the one to casey, the 3 deep balls to DSJ, the TD to DSJ that got called back. Am I missing any?
The first 8 minutes of this second half have an eerily familiar feel to them. Horrendous pass defense leading to an easy TD for the opponent, followed by an offensive possession featuring unbalanced playcalling, a bad penalty that negates a TD, and a draw play on 3rd and short that gets blown up in the backfield.. anybody checked to see if Chip Kelly has started growing a walrus mustache?
nice tackle by WOLFF!
yes it was. Followed by good coverage by Boykin…Punt that chicken!!
There’s that non-to stop we’ve been waiting for.
Boykin again, he’s our best defender.
Kendricks, Barwin, and Cox are decent too. But he’s definitely our best defensive back by a large margin.
I have to ask, what has Cox done? I haven’t seen him do mug today (or a whole lore outside of one quarter last week either).
He made a nice play collapsing a run play in the first half, but it hasn’t been his best day. He is a good player though.
I love Cox’s potential, but you have to show up on tape first before you can be in the discussion or best player on D
If I were Whisenhunt, I’d keep throwing until the Eagles D proves it can force more than one incompletion for every ten dropbacks.
Cox needs to show up
Thats how you do it!!!!
Amazing what a difference 6″ makes
finally connected, thats been there all day
I would try that 10 more times before this game ends….they haven’t stopped it once
I agree, its been there all day just keep hitting it.
Re: KC Game
Not too look too far ahead . . . but I’d expect an airial bombardment
It’s about time!!
It was bound to happen right?
About time.. that throw has been there all game. This Wright fellow has no chance of covering him.
seriously, it’s like Nate Allen versus anyone else in the league. I’d go back to the well as often as possible.
what’s the Eagles stat line when Peanut catches a TD?
Good question. I’ll have to look into that.
t’s good in our favor, was raised last week. I just have awful short term memory
FEED D-Jackson !!!!!
The Chargers have no answer for him. Either they start playing back or we need to keep going deep.
If the defense can force a 3 and out…. (insert the theme song from Jaws)
We are seriously screwed if DJax gets hurt. He’s the only guy on the roster with any speed or better than #4 WR talent.
Cary Williams!!!! Cary Williams!!!,
Boykin already looks better than Cary Williams.
If Chung didn’t hold you woulda stood up, and thumped your chest at Cary cracking dudes short of the first down mark tho
Update on my Race to 2000 Yards challenge from earlier:
Dallas Cowboys: 597
It’s heating up!
Great hustle by Trent Cole. Most pass rushers would have taken the useless shot at the QB there, he pursued the play and helped make the tackle.
No pass rush
Whatever happened to Graham?? The only rush we’ve got is the odd flash of Trent Cole.
Here’s the sconces we expected. Catch in front of him. Sure tackle after.
at least carry tackles
I’m sorry, I adore how Cary tackles and battles out there…maybe it’s been too long since I seen a good corner or a feisty defender, but I love having him….he just can’t be the best player in a secondary….He needs to be a #2 CB with two good safeties backing him up
I love that he’s fiery and is a willing and capable tackler. I just wish he wasn’t so bad at pass coverage.
absolutely, he’s ideal in that role
that hold by chung was painful
Lol Cary keeps beating on wood head
Long live The Queen!!!!(Dunlap)
First down and boykin down
Boykin rolled his ankle…I saw it
That’s about as awful as it gets
goddamnit… all because Chung held. Fucking shit.
and the Charger fans are saying . . . damn turnovers!!!
Can’t get a stop. Painful.
Poyer is about to get abused…
0 pass rush as most of us worried
Wolff saved Chung’s ass
sack Fumble time!!!!
If chung doesn’t hold, this drive was stopped 5 minutes ago.
Would’ve been the first stop we’d gotten all day, aside from the fumbles. I don’t believe the San Diego punter has gotten on the field.
They’ve punted once.
AFC North looks really weak this year.
Wolff is already better then Nate
Gates should have had that.
Good play by Kendricks there.
Kendricks tackling a WR was huge
we know what we gonna draft in the first 5 rounds !!!! Who are the best CB’s in college this year..?
see Oregon, Ohio state and Florida lol
Cornerbacks, safeties, pass rushers, and don’t forget a franchise quarterback.. this team has a lot of needs.
Needs – Defense.
Not a QB…. We can develop Foles until Vick leaves, but not having good CB is killing us… I really don’t think we got the right D-Coordinator… He’s blitzing a lot like he was playing Madden..
Cox is getting Nasty..I like it
thank god only a field goal.
Yep. If the offense can deliver a TD, pressure really goes to the Chargers offense.
I’d rather our O have to drive for the win than the Chargers, right now.
we need to score a TD fast NOW!!
Did Cox offer a hand to Rivers and pull it back, saying “psych!”?
Re: Earl Wolff
T-Law . . .
Can you give me a quick breakdown on how Davis is using Wolff right now?
Are the Birds going with 3 safeties on passing downs?
We have played some 3 safeties look. We are bound to with zero healthy CBs
meant to say that.
Vick taking another jarring hit… ugh. Just slide man, it’s not worth the extra two yards.
Good play by Vick….wtf with the No flag….I’m tired of these zebras
Looked like one of the Chargers coaches left his leg for Vick to trip over.
Ertz doesn’t appear to be fighting the ball today.
DJax actually blocking downfield… anybody check to see if the sky is falling?
Attaboy with shady blocking
Nice tackle by Weddle there… that guy is a good safety.
Come on Djax….just come on!!!
Finally get the lead in the mid-4th Qtr. Defense needs to make one big play.
welp – there goes that. Here’s hoping they worked on their 3min and change offense.
welp, I dont feel so bad because if our D gives up a TD we can win it with a TD
I’m bout to cry
Gained a lot of yards on that fumble. Wow.
I shed a tear
Only against the eagles.
Re: 1/2-time adjustments
T-Law . . . maybe in the GDR, you could point to adjustments on both sides of the ball. If any.
Does a point per drive stat exist??? The Eagles offense should be pretty good on that. If only we had a D
Sure tackle by, gasp, Nate Allen.
This is all a cunning plan to let them score fast so we get the ball back.
Agreed. This obviously has the feel of, last team with the ball wins.
On the plus side, a short field means the Eagles O will get another chance. On current performance, this D was never gonna get a stop anyway so it’ll be good to have a little more time for the comeback.
Is it just me or has Ryan Matthews been out of the game for a long time?
There he is.
“put him in the bathroom
Feel like Erkle. Did I do that?
I LOLed so it makes it a little better…But as my main man Jesse Catsopolis would say….”Have Mercy!!!!!”
good think about this offense is that they are always in the 2:00 drill
This is gonna be a long season
12 for 13 on third
down against our D not a good recipe
Looks like we found something Dunlap is good at…
That is normally a holding call, except against the Eagles
“Pancaking Nate Allen” is found in the skillset of most NFL blockers.
Didn’t say it was much of an achievement
ok, I won’t put that one an Nate.
Its certainly has been an exciting game.
Time to find out how far ahead we are on the learning curve and mental toughness spectrum!!!!
LETS GO BIRDS!!!!!
Please Vick make me eat all my words on this one drive!!!!! Give me this game and I will go back to running around the city telling everyone that you “Have the biggest **** in the world”(like it was 2010)
Well, we scored 27 points so far, so we’re still beating last year in that respect.
Put it this way, would you rather our O have to drive to win, or the D have to stop the Chargers?
Would rather have the offense trying to kill the clock and protect the lead?
After last year I still think the O is going to turn it over on every play. So I really dont know
Well, I also think our D will have an epic fail in the secondary each play so…
That is why I wasnt sure. But will most likely have the Eagles O with enough time
both – just kidding of course, good point though offense is the strong suit here’s hoping they prove the point.
Well I think we just had that answered, didn’t we?
We have to time this so that we score with no more than :10 left on the clock.. otherwise Rivers is going to bring them back to beat us.
Re: Route Concepts
How much of the Eagles’ receivers seeming to wide open is conceptual . . . versus the formations/match ups . . . versus the threat of the run?
During the Reid era, as good as he was at his best at scheming, I don’t remember receivers CONSISTENTLY being so open downfield (beyond 8-10 yards).
And if teams are gonna 1-safety high in a 3-deep scheme, D-Jax should have a truly monster season.
Really impressive how consistently open receivers have been throughout the first two games.
Come on Foles….this is the stuff that Legends are made of lol
Update: Damn it Foles. that was your opportunity and you BLEW IT!!!! Trade him!!!!! Lol
Gotta run some clock here. There is almost no chance we win this game if we give the ball back to the Chargers with two minutes left.
Bunch of crap. That sideline was totally in the wrong place on that pass.
Sideline needed to reroute more towards the corner.
Need to put the sideline in a better position for us to succeed.
Foles is obviously following the gameplan by misfiring on a throw to Jackson along the sideline.
so… is Vick coming back in?
He’s a warrior. If he had a concussion he’d come back in.
Did anyone else hold their breath when Vick threw that pass like ‘okay, here comes the INT to kill off the game on a ball that should never have been thrown’?
Yeah, sure is what it looked like when I saw how crowded the destination was.
Why aren’t we running to kill the clock?
At some point, the law of averages favors the Eagles’ defense.
I don’t expect that from chip. I think he just mismanaged the clock and now we lose.
Left way to much time
i see a 33 30 loss in our future
well, games on our D now. so game over.
OK… so I say we intentionally let the Chargers return this kickoff for a TD so that we get the ball back with enough time to score again.
I’m only half-kidding.
Can we get a pass rush for just one play?
Why no runs at all down there? This was an Andy ending to that drive
I really hope Kelly takes a look at his playcalling on that one. They could’ve easily gotten SD to burn 2 TOs down there.
I think the Vick injury fucked it up
Is Boykin in?
Last time I ever use the word “limb” in a comment here.
Hello 1 and 1
Man…this hurts. This really hurts
incoming yet another game winning field goal against us
why are we calling timeouts
Because you want a chance to return a kickoff if the Chargers make this FG.
well they didn’t accomplish that and gave them more yards
Yes, they did. Like I said above, they don’t call those timeouts, and the Chargers run the clock down to a few seconds before kicking that FG, the game’s over, with no chance at a miracle runback, Hail Mary, or hook and ladder play at the end. A low percentage chance to win is better than no chance.
So we’re either giving them a chance to turn the ball over, or preserve time to try to run the kick back.
the odds of getting a turnover are far too low to be taking that sort of gamble right now. Not really sure what’s to be gained with using the TOs there
Tom Brady falls to the middle of the field. Gives the kicker a better angle than from the right hash.
why the hell is Chippah calling timeouts?
How big of an idiot is Dan Dierdorf? “I don’t know what Philadelphia is gaining by calling timeouts here”.
A chance to get the ball back, you %@#$ing moron.
with what time dude there is no time. It doesn’t make any sense.
Yes, it does. As is, the Eagles at least get a chance to return a kickoff. If they don’t call those timeouts, the Chargers run it down to :02 before kicking the FG and the game is over as soon as that ball splits the uprights.
possibly, but normally at the end of the game like that they kick the FG on 3rd down with a little extra time just in case something goes wrong. I understand the reasoning, but when they are getting ready to attempt a 49 yarder I don’t think you give them the extra yards. If its a 30 or so, sure, but at 49 yards the odds are probably 50/50 he even makes it.
If you know they’re going to run the ball and feel confident you can stuff it at the LOS, you’re not giving them extra yards. As it was they only gave them one or two extra – that’s very unlikely to be the difference between making that FG and missing it. I’m not sure what the difference in success rates is for 49 yard FG tries vs. 47 yards but I doubt it’s very big.
maybe – but to my logic if the eagles didn’t call the timeouts than the chargers would have which then imputes they have add’tl timeouts when they get the ball back.
The Chargers would not have called a timeout until there was a few seconds left. It was not in their interest to leave any time on the clock. If the Eagles don’t stop the clock there, the game is over without any chance at a miracle play at the end.
One thing about having Chip as a coach, he’ll probably explain his line of thinking pretty well in the post-game.
He basically gave them an additional 3.5 yards
This Eagles Defense is infuriating!!! No pass rush, can’t cover….
Heartbreak hotel…gave me a heart attack and made me waste way more tree then I would have liked…sigh
San Diego, today, proved the importance of a good, experienced NFL QB — and the lack of a pass rush
more later, than the first
I know I’m going back and watching every single snap from Graham and Cole…let’s see them trade Vinny
Dont, you will get depressed by watching Dunlap manhandle Cole for most of the game
The team with King Dunlap won.
The team with Nate Allen lost.
RE: Eagles pass rush
Can someone honestly claim that Curry or Graham would be a worst situation than the current pass rush baseline of using Barwin as a DE or using a 3-3-5?
I can see going downfield fast, but once DeSean was at the 15, it is inexcusable for us not to run the ball. I don’t understand this at all. Foles could have handed off too, so Vick being hurt is not the reason. We should have been trying to end our score (FG or TD) after they burnt their time outs. This is on Chippah.
I was surprised they called that pass play right before the 2 minute warning. They had a first down and enough time on the play clock to take it down to two minutes, then Vick throws a silly pass to stop the clock (at least it wasn’t intercepted) and Foles had to come in and get to 3rd down with no real chance to run down the clock. Doesn’t make much sense to me either.
In 4days we get an opportunity to forget about this
those hope for an average NFL defense are still hoping. They aren’t very good through 6 of the first 8 quarters of the season
Very True…wait until Big Red and the Chiefs throw for 700 on this secondary. That is not hyperbole, it is doable
Definitely seems like our defense benefitted from a lousy Redskins offense in the first half. The miscues of RG3 and that offense gave us a few false positives.
They’re giving up 400+ yards and 30 points a game, and allowing very high opposing passer ratings and conversion percentages on third downs. I’d say “they aren’t very good” is an understatement.
‘Frustrating and entertaining – 2013 Eagles’
Hopefully this game can finally put to rest the complacent attitude of so many Eagles fans. I’m typically an Eagles optimist, but this team has done nothing to instill confidence in me. As if the last two years hasn’t served as enough evidence, yet there’s still far too many people who routinely think this team is better than they are. I just can’t understand why anyone thinks this team should beat anyone. We were 4-12 last year. Sorry, rant over.
On the up side, we have yet to score less than 30 points.
This game made it clear that the Eagles aren’t going anywhere until they get a competent defense.
AaI think people are over reacting. I don’t know what happened, but the chargers Oline picked up every single blitz. That won’t always be the case….It’s never as bad as it looks after a loss, never as good as it looks after a win….we are a work in progress..doesn’t mean we cant enjoy it and have hope to win a bad division
I don’t think they’re going to be as bad as last year. But people predicting a division championship after last week were overreacting. This was and is a 7-9, 8-8 type team.
Looking at our division, that still might take it.
Exactly….it ain’t how you win the division, or how good it is,..sneak into the playoffs and it’s ANybodys game…
This is a young nd well coached team…if they can claw into the playoffs they will be a much better team in January then they are today…Earl Eolff, Ertz could be completely different players by then
Let’s hope so. But we gotta realistic. Watch the Seahawks/49ers game this afternoon and you will see there is still a major gulf between where this team is right now and serious SB contender status.
8-8 might take the division.
Re: Late time outs v. Turnover v. a Longer Kick
Chip calls the TOs. Chargers run two plays using a hand-off, one a QB surrender.
Kelly surrended 3-4 yards — making the FG 46 yards instead of a short 50.
He also forced SD to execute two handoffs.
So what’s the better play — Two TOs and hope for a botched handoff, leading to a a 46 yard FG . . . versus no TOS and a short 50 yard FG attempt?
(I doubt the TOs were used for a Stanford KO return or 1-in-a-million TD on the hook-and-multi-lateral play.)
I say it’s worth a shot that the hand-offs muffed, since the FG percentage differential is probably just about as marginal as the likelihood of a fumble.
MAYBE “EAGLES REWIND” WILL GIVE US THE STATISTICAL DATA ON THAT DECISION.
Whatever it is, Kelly’s very attuned to this kind of minutiae.
Tell me about the fine tuning thought process behind not running the ball after DeSean was down at the 15. Why not take some clock off? I thought he might run it every play at that point. Either you score a TD or leave no time at all and kick the FG.
Agressive coach going for TD to win the game. Passing game was clicking way better than run game for the most part.
That’s not a good answer. In that situation, aggression = stupidity. When your defense sucks, leaving time on the clock for the other team to come back is asking to lose the game.
That’s not a good answer.
Depends on what question you think I’m answering. I’m providing my guess of Kelly’s reasoning. Whether you agree with the reasoning or not, I’d say it’s a pretty decent guess as to why it went down the way it did.
Yeah I agree with you – I just think Kelly is dead wrong if that was his thinking.
Probably argue pushing the kicker out to the 50-yard line but you would need a couple of situational probability to due the actual math to see what was the ‘smarter move’ at least on paper.
I would guess the smart play there is always to stop the clock to ensure you get the ball back. A few yards (which it’s no guarantee you even surrender – a D expecting the run could just as easily stuff the runner for a loss and knock the offense backwards) is unlikely to make the difference on the FG try.
It certainly works that way in Madden (which is admittedly not necessarily a realistic simulation). I wouldn’t be surprised if Chip Kelly has crunched the numbers on this precise situation however.
To me, the far more egregious clock management blunder was not running more time off the clock before kicking the tying FG. They should have mixed a few running plays in there, and gotten the clock down to :30 or so before taking a shot at the end zone and then kicking the FG. As bad as this defense is their chance of stopping Rivers with 1:50 to go and a full complement of time outs was minimal. The timeouts before the FG at the end were inconsequential in comparison.
4-7 in season openers at the Linc. West Coast teams playing on a 1 PM start won at a 28% clip the last 10 years. Curious to see what they numbers are on a shortened-week.
chip Kelly – mental mistakes/clock management, no commitment to the run game, especially in the last few minutes/red zone to rob as much time from SD for a field goal. Better served to take a TO on the front side of the 2MW to get vick/celek back on the field. Lots of penalties for this team,
DJAX – cost the game with a bonehead penalty that setup the last charges TD.
Defense – zero pash rush, safety play abysmal, gashed in run game.
Boykin – could push for time outside?
Casey – dropped a TD in first half on cachable ball.
See ya next week.
DJax’s penalty was costly. Amazing athlete but he is still a punk.
The first two Washington games of this season put last Monday night into a better perspective — especially factoring in Washington’s 1st-half incompetence on offense last week.
and now comes the overreaction.
1-15 here we come!!
Did you not watch Nate Allen play today? He should be cut tomorrow, sadly whats behind him is no better.
Did you watch the whole D? Based on that, the whole D should be cut.
so is the myth of Kelly the genius now over?
The Eagles’ offense was sloppy at times and left at least 11 points on the field. (Casey minus a FG, D-Jax long pass).
Kelly’s still a genius . . . on offense.
Defense? Can’t make a 3-4 chiffon out of 4-3 broken eggs
Give a lot of credit to Rivers and Whisenhunt. Well-drawn up offensive game plan of attack by Whisenhunt and great execution by Rivers.
All credit to that Oline…picked up every blitz
You don’t think Whisenhunt as a former O-line coach had anything to do with their protection schemes?
Rivers had a pocket to step up and throw all day and the interior protection was stellar. Chargers were willing to let the Eagles bring pressure from the edge as long as Rivers could get the ball out quickly or step up into the pocket.
Rivers also called a ton of audibles and did a bunch of adjustments at the line especially in the 1st half.
Absolutely…but that Oline really held their own and exceeded their reputation
The Eagles pass rush has been terrible outside of the Redskins games since start of last year. Did you remember how the terrible Cards OL held up against us?
Completely different scheme with a bunch of different players. Eagles don’t have a talented OLB who can pass-rush either.
Interesting to see if Curry gets activated for the Chiefs’ game on Thurs night as the Eagles are desperate to generate any kind of rush.
Cox, Cole, Thornton, Graham, Curry is still here from last year.
The two best last year was Graham and Cox and neither have done anything when on the field.
King Dunlap laughs at the Eagles D
I have a hard time giving credit when this D blows this hard. They got ZERO pressure on Rivers
What happened to screens, bubble/WR/, draws, TE’s?
defense didn’t give it to us.
Vick had his best game as a professional — did amazingly well from the pocket.
But he left points on the field w/ a couple D-Jax passes and a sloppy (T-Law’s word) pass to Casey . . . which he still catches 8 out of 10 at least. (Harbor makes that play.)
Gonna disagree with you there. I know he put up a lot of yards but he made several questionable decisions and poor throws that cost us points. That Monday night game against the Redskins in 2010 is still his high water mark.
What questionable decision did he make today?
Threw the ball into some very tight windows resulting in incompletions when he didn’t have to. Nothing horrendous but he was far from his best.
You mean the type of throws we hate when Vick isnt making as well?
Not saying he had a horrible game. He was very good, just not as perfect as he needed to be to win given how bad our defense was.
Vick was not the reason we lost this game and I wouldn’t pin it on him. I just think it’s erroneous to say it was the best game he ever played.
I think this game was better because he was smarter with his body.
should have been a TD, hit casey in the mitts, no excuse. We did nothing to adjust to the chargers getting pressure, which they were able to do.
Kelly went from Bill Walsh status down to Steve Spurrier status
Its ridiculous how little home field advantage the Eagles get from the Linc. Little/zero intimidation factor coming to Philly and playing in front of this crowd.
And Jeff Laurie couldn’t wait to knock down the Vet.
He wouldn’t even give the Vet a going-away party.
So? This is the Curse of the Vet!!!
Allen does deserve the ridicule he will get after the game. Amazing how often he is out of position in coverage and his poor his tackling was today.
Confidence does matter to some degree even to a professional and he looked as tentative as a guy playing secondary could today.
What about Ryans, Williams, Cole? All them had terrible games, but people dont talk about em, because they are not Nate Allen.
Also point me to where Allen was out of position?
The first TD, was great play design by the Chargers running a pick play on him. The other TD where nobody covered Royal, was NOT Allen’s man, Allen had the deep middle on that play (you can see it by the way he back peddles into his zone)
Disagree Cole had a terrible game, he was possibly our best DL, at least for the first half.
True. But Cole had a few positive plays, so I can’t call that terrible. Bad, overall, possibly.
No, Cole was the best.
By relative I’m thinking a bit about Cole v. 2008 — with the rest of the line struggling for sure.
Sure. Take you pick. I thought the worst play was by the D-line today. Sopanga got whupped today and nobody did everything up front against the pass or run. Getting blown off the ball constantly or not maintaining gaps in the 1st half on run defense.
Thank you. I know it is easy to be after Allen, but people also needs to be after the rest of the guys then. Cant pick and choose
dude — if you’re not seeing how awful AND OUT OF PLACE Allen was — you’re not watching….this game pretty much backed up what Nnamdi was saying all last year…
Show me the plays. Does Allen need to learn to tackle better? yes, but he is still by far the best cover safety we got.
Can’t stomach losing at home. This Has to stop
Harping on Vick misses the point. Yeah he missed some throws and cost the Eagles some point but he also made some nice throws too. Also didn’t turn the ball over again today even though that fumble he had was fortunate to go out of bounds in the 1st half.
2nd week in a row where the guys on the team with the best supposed hands (Avant) coughed up another fumble. It’s painful to watch how slow he is out there. This team misses Maclin in a big way right now.
The offense deserves maybe 25% of the blame for this loss, and of that portion Vick deserves maybe 25% – he was far down the list of reasons we lost this game. But he did miss a few critical throws – the bombs to Jackson and that badly thrown ball to a wide open Casey on the first possession in particular. If McNabb had thrown that pass we’d be hearing jokes about worm burners all week.
Still, I agree, the defense deserves to be in the stocks after this game, not Vick.
It was not a McNabb worm burner it was more a knee capper
Vick put up 30 with no turn overs and didn’t take any hits he didn’t need to, hard to put any of this at vick’s fault. I would like at the D and DJAX on this one, plus Kelly’s terrible clock management.
Much better QBs and Olines won’t play as well as Rivers and The Chargers this year….We didn’t beat ourselves. We fought hard against a very well prepared team. it won’t be like this every week
Let’s also not forget if it’s not for DJax’s penalty and Henery not recovering that KO fumble, this would be a different game.
Or Henery not missing a FG, or Vick hitting Jackson on one of those long tds, etc.
ok, everybody move back over, all the “pro’s” will be off our bandwagon again…good game … lots of fun. Not sure what Chip was doing at then end — or those 3 offensive play calls … but this team wasn’t going 16-0, dust off the lose and get ready for KC
Eagles’ fans will be pissed and rightly so but nothing compared to the anger if they lose to Reid on Thurs night in a blowout.
Really hope Fletcher can start too. Missed him in a big way today picking on Boykins in selective matchups and forcing the Eagles into a bunch of mismatches when they were putting 3 and 4-WR sets on the field. Limited depth the Eagles do have is really exposed in those nickel situations.
Boykin was the highlight of the game for the defense.
Yeah he did a nice job defending the deep out in the 1st half and caused a huge turnover. He also got beat today a couple of times too.
It crazy to think what the Chargers would have done if Floyd hadn’t come out of the game either in the 3rd. Physically he and Gates were doing whatever they wanted to today vs this secondary.
Is there a bigger disparity in quality for 4 o’clock games than SF/SEA vs. JAX/OAK? Maybe the two best teams in the league in the first game and the two worst in the second.
