Some Thoughts on the 2nd Round

Posted: May 1st, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 528 Comments »

I think things went pretty well for the Eagles last night. There are still plenty of prime targets on the board, which means the Eagles can sit tight and have a good player fall to them. If there is someone they covet, they can go get the player.

I thought ILB Stephone Anthony would be a 2nd round target of theirs for sure. That changed when the Saints took him in the 1st round. That was the one disappointing moment toward the end of the 1st round.

Here are some players I think the Eagles will have serious interest in:

OL TJ Clemmings
OL Jake Fisher
OL Donovan Smith
OG Ali Marpet
OG AJ Cann
QB Bryce Petty
DB Quinten Rollins
CB Eric Rowe
ILB Benardrick McKinney
LB Owamagbe Odighizuwa

Guys they may have interest in:

LB/DL Preston Smith
CB Jalen Collins
LB Danielle Hunter
ILB Denzel Perryman
LB Eli Harold
ILB Eric Kendricks
S Adrian Amos
CB Ronald Darby

Smith has the kind of size they love, but is he meant to play LB? Collins has multiple failed drug tests and is a bit of an underachiever, but has major talent. Hunter has great measurables, but wasn’t very productive. Perryman might be slower than they prefer. Harold isn’t as big as they prefer OLBs to be. He also might go early in the 2nd. Would they draft one Kendricks while reportedly shopping the other? We know they like Amos. Do they 2nd round like him or 3rd round like him? Darby is just under 5-11, has short arms and small hands. Would the Eagles want that?

Back to the top group.

The player I covet is Quinten Rollins. I want an instinctive DB with great hands. I think those guys are hard to find. The Eagles could play him at CB or S.

You can argue that trading up for one of the OTs would be the smart move.

Adding someone who could challenge for a starting job right away (RG) and could be a key starter in the future (at LT or RT) might be worth the move up.

I didn’t list any WRs above. I don’t anticipate Chip Kelly double-dipping at that spot, but I can’t completely rule it out. Adding a vertical threat like Devin Smith or a bigger WR like Jaelen Strong (212 pounds), Sammie Coates (212 pounds) or even Devin Funchess (232 pounds) would give the Eagles one deep, talented group of WRs. I hope the team goes elsewhere, but there is logic to adding another WR if he is the highest rated player on the board.

I’m hoping for defense or OL.

The bottom line is that even if the Eagles stay put a good player should be on the board for that spot.

* * * * *

Any trades to happen? The Eagles were shopping some players recently. We’ll find out if that was just pre-draft talk to test the market or if the team is actively trying to move guys like Mychal Kendricks and Brandon Boykin.

Took forever our first trade last night. Might get one right away tonight. Titans are seriously considering dealing the 33rd overall pick.

  12. 12 GEAGLE said at 6:59 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Steelers want it allegedly for Landon or Jalen Collins

  13. 13 GEAGLE said at 6:58 PM on May 1st, 2015:

To my defensive brothers… All we need to do is get thru tonight without trading away or boys and VInny, Mykal and Fletcher will all be safe since we have to be full retard to accept a 4th round pick for any of them. After tonight, only talent in jeopardy will be Mathis and Boykin..

If we get thru tonight without trading away our boys, I will be so jacked up for next season!!!..

no trading away our players is all I care about tonight

  14. 14 bdbd20 said at 6:59 PM on May 1st, 2015:

TJ Clemmens please. Might require a trade up, though.

Source on La’El Collins: If Collins is not drafted, he becomes a free agent. With no eligibility, he will not be eligible for another draft

So if someone was to take him in the 7th and he didn’t sign with them, then he could re-enter the draft. But if no one takes him at all, he can’t and is just an UDFA.

  16. 16 mksp said at 7:01 PM on May 1st, 2015:

An early run on ILBs could help us move Kendricks if thats what Chip wants.

  19. 19 Greg Richards said at 7:03 PM on May 1st, 2015:

  40. 40 ICDogg said at 7:12 PM on May 1st, 2015:

In the right system he’s excellent.

  41. 41 James said at 7:13 PM on May 1st, 2015:

SAF Landon Collins is not a top tier SAF prospect with the ability to patrol as a single high defender but he does have versatility to be a Cover 2 FS or box safety and also provide valuable coverage out of nickel defenses. A powerful hitter with aggressive instincts, Collins is capable of starting early but presents limited upside.

  42. 42 mksp said at 7:12 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Guys, Landon Collins is a good player. He’s just not a fit for our scheme.

    Doesn’t deserve all this vitriol.

  45. 45 mksp said at 7:19 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Sean Taylor was one of the best safeties to come out of the draft in the last 20 years, by most accounts. Different era as well.

Hard to compare to be honest.

  46. 46 Tdoteaglefan said at 7:22 PM on May 1st, 2015:

  47. 47 Greg Richards said at 7:12 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Eagles WRs will run circles around Collins. Downhill S, might be good attacking our running game, should be able to kill them on play-action. Or get him in a 1-on-1 match up with Ertz.

Eric Rowe has the makings of a very good NFL boundary corner. Ability to play off with efficient feet or up in the face of receivers as press corner suggests a versatile player capable of working numerous schemes. Tremendous ball skills could also equate to transition back to Free Safety.

    47(430 pts) + 191(16.6) = 446.6 pts. 52(380) + 145(33.5) + 156(29) = 442.5 pts.

  458. 458 ICDogg said at 8:29 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Rowe is a 4 year starter who began his college career playing the free and strong safety positions. He made the switch to corner as a senior for depth reasons and actually transitioned very smoothly. He was productive at both positions, however his best postion in the NFL may be at free safety as he possesses ideal measurables and skills in that spot. Weighing in at over 200 lbs and measuring over 6 feet, Rowe also uses his length (32.5 inch arms) and strength against big WRs and TEs. Rowe has shown the ability to disrupt the timing of big receivers and enough quickness for his size to stay hip to hip with them through their route. He should be able to match up with today’s “move” TEs in the slot. He has extensive experience playing press bail, but was also asked to play 0 coverage as well as zone from the CB position. In man coverage, Rowe’s strength is defending quick hitting routes where he displays outstanding anticipation and uses his frame to position himself to make plays on the ball. He tends to play high in off coverage, particularly against intermediate to deep routes. He lacks elite hips or foot quickness to overcome lazy technique and can get beat because of it. His play speed is well above average but he doesn’t have the second gear to recover if his man has a step on him. When in position, Rowe’s overall ball skills are outstanding, even though his interception numbers don’t reflect it. In the moment of truth, he does not panic, locating and attacking the football when it nears the receiver. He does a good job of using his long arms and precise timing to defend his receiver’s hands as the ball arrives. He shows very good patience in zone coverage, consistently diagnosing route combinations and reacting with twitch. Rowe is generally a sound tackler who flashes thumping ability but he has a tendency to fly downhill out of control at times and is susceptible to open field moves. Overall, Rowe showed the range in his 3 years at safety and the press skills to project him as single high or cover 2 free safety. However, in specific schemes, Rowe’s length and ball skills could be seen as assets at CB. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Rowe starting at CB 2-3 years from now.

Even with the trade that is amazing value for Rowe

  461. 461 ICDogg said at 8:30 PM on May 1st, 2015:

His full name is Nelson Eric Rowe. Rowe was born in Cleveland and mainly raised in Houston by both parents, but lived in 6 cities in 4 states growing up. He was a very strong student who served on the National Honor Society in high school before being named to two Pac 12 All-Academic teams and graduating with his bachelor’s degree in business. Rowe is described as having a more reserved personality but takes to coaching well and is well respected by his peers. He showed adaptability and a team first attitude by converting to cornerback as a senior and played exceptionally well in his new role. He plays with a passion and seems to have a quick learning curve. He has played in 47 out of 50 games missing 3 to relatively minor injuries. His style of play is very physical but he is built to endure NFL physicality. He also plays with confidence and appears to have short term memory.

  479. 479 ICDogg said at 8:31 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Rowe is a very good athlete who has excelled in multiple defensive back spots. While he was primarily Utah’s starting free safety during his first 3 years, he also saw time in the slot and as a strong safety depending on the situation. His switch to corner allowed him to showcase his twitchiness and speed. He is built like a strong safety with ideal height and length. He is slightly high cut but shows the flexibility sink his hips in his pedal. Rowe often beats teammates to plays in front of coverages because of his foot quickness and downhill explosiveness. He reaches top end speed quickest when attacking downhill. When he’s lazy in controlling his center of gravity, his shoulders can get too high and he loses some balance when turning or on hard redirection. He generally shows sound control over his long legs, but foot control can get choppy when he plays high.

I wouldn’t be to mad about trading 2 fifths. They hardly ever turn into starters and there was probably a bidding war to move up and get Rowe.

  483. 483 ICDogg said at 8:33 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Rowe is a very smart football player who trusts his instincts. Because of his experience playing from multiple defensive back positions, he shows an understanding for where his help is and usually gambles wisely. As a safety, Rowe was strong at scanning the field in front of him and identifying route combinations unfold in order to get a jump on positioning once the ball was in the air. He lacks elite instincts and read and react ability but he was consistently the first defender to the ball on pass plays to his side of the field. His physicality is good for a safety and exceptional for a corner. He loves contact and isn’t afraid to blow up plays at or near the line of scrimmage. He’s not a true “thumper”, but he converts speed to power in his closing steps to clean up ball carriers quickly. He does have a tendency to fly in too hot for the kill shot, leading to missed tackle attempts, but when he sinks and breaks down, he will wrap up. Rowe is not quite a build up speed guy, but he doesn’t have initial burst that some elite 1 deep safeties possess. His top end speed is well above average, however.

  484. 484 Jernst said at 8:38 PM on May 1st, 2015:

So is this saying he has good instincts or bad? Or just that they’re good, but not elite? I’m confused…

  505. 505 ICDogg said at 8:37 PM on May 1st, 2015:

There were some questions whether Rowe could stay on the hip of faster receivers coming into his senior year and he proved he has the size and speed to do so from outside the numbers as a corner. When he’s in press, his strongest M/M technique, Rowe uses a strong punch to establish early positioning and has the speed to carry downfield routes. However, there is some tightness in his hips when turning and running which will is only magnified if his shoulders get high. While his top end speed is enough to stay hip to hip with most receivers, he lacks the 2nd gear necessary for recovery when his receiver gets a step on him. When the ball is in the air he plays it like a receiver and uses his long arms to attack the catch point. His hands seem solid, but he tends to have a “disrupt first”, “catch second” mentality which hurts his interception totals.

  506. 506 James said at 8:40 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Flexibility: Very strong ability to bend from the knees and fluid hips to turn and drop off the LOS late in Cover 3/4. Sinks hips and keeps COG over base with eyes on Quarterback.

  514. 514 ICDogg said at 8:40 PM on May 1st, 2015:

Rowe can play in press or deep zone coverage because of his size and range but there is still some development needed as a technician closer to the line of scrimmage before he can play at a starting level in the NFL. He shows excellent anticipatory skills which allow him to use his frame to undercut and disrupt the path of the receiver without drawing the flag. He has a strong initial punch to disrupt the timing of the route at the LOS but doesn’t get grabby through the route. His footwork in shallow zone coverage is generally sound although he will false step when savvy receivers set him up and break outside his downfield shoulder. One of the more impressive translatable qualities Rowe possesses is his patience in the moment of truth. He consistently locates the football and does not panic when tracking it. He has a feel for when to go up and attack it and when to play the receivers hands, which he executes like a pro. Because of his ball skills, leaping ability, and length, it is very difficult for receivers to convert 50/50 balls.
