Eagles Add CB, Rumors Abound

The Eagles signed CB Leodis McKelvin on Tuesday. He had been cut by Buffalo recently so he was eligible to sign right away and didn’t have to wait for the league year to start on Wednesday.

Jimmy Bama has the details on McKelvin, who signed a 2-year deal. The obvious attraction to McKelvin is that he played for Jim Schwartz in Buffalo in 2014. McKelvin had a career high 4 INTs that year despite only playing in 10 games.

McKelvin was rumored to have a visit set up for Dallas, but said he signed with the Eagles because he wanted to play for Schwartz and also didn’t want to drag out the process. He’s dealt with injuries in recent years (nothing drastic), but is completely healthy right now and wants to focus on training to be ready for the 2016 season.

Buffalo cut McKelvin because they had cap issues. It wasn’t a case that he was no longer a solid starter. McKelvin was asked if the Eagles told him he would start or what exactly his role might be. He said nothing was definitive and that he was just here to contribute and compete. That’s what you want to hear from a veteran.

McKelvin has a very good chance to be a starting CB. The Eagles will have him compete with the young guys already in place. The team could add a CB early in the draft. They are also still in touch with Nolan Carroll about returning. They aren’t putting all their eggs in one basket. There were reports that the Eagles had interest in free agent CB Patrick Robinson. That could be another piece of the puzzle.

*****

There are all kinds of rumors about the compensation the Eagles will get in the trades with Tennessee and Miami. No one is sure of anything.

That would have been a great deal, but sounds too good. We’ll find out Wednesday afternoon what the details are.

*****

The Eagles need a SAM LB. Bradham has played that spot (as well as WIL) and played for Schwartz. He would be a good, reasonably priced addition to the LB corps. The Eagles have been linked to Tahir Whitehead of the Lions as a FA target. Bradham could be a someone else to talk to in case things don’t work out with Whitehead. Or the Eagles could add both players (if the price is right). The team needs a SAM LB and depth.

Bradham did post his best numbers in Schwartz’s defense in 2014 so you can see why both sides would be interested in each other.

*****

I would be fine with cutting Mark Sanchez and spending that money to sign Daniel. I don’t really trust Sanchez right now. Daniel doesn’t have the most compelling resume, but he’s been a solid backup for several years now. He knows Doug Pederson and what he wants. QBs like that have value when helping a team learn a new coach’s offense.

*****

Jason La Canfora thinks Ryan Mathews could still be on the move.

Roseman is motivated to pawn off running back Ryan Mathews as well, I continue to hear, and will probably take next to nothing to move him. They may be positioned to draft a back in the first round, and I would not be surprised at all if the takes the future cash and cap savings from shipping off Murray and Maxwell and invests it in an extension for Fletcher Cox and perhaps a free-agent corner as well (he’s dabbled in that market with some regularity).

La Canfora hated Chip Kelly and was out of the loop for a while, but now is tuned back in to what the Eagles are thinking and doing. Listen to him.

Why deal Mathews, who played well last year?

RB is a position where you shouldn’t overpay anyone. Mathews isn’t making big bucks, but isn’t cheap either. He missed 3 full games last year and was hurt in others. He missed 10 games the year before that. Mathews will turn 29 this season. That’s not a great overall description.

I do wonder if the Eagles have some RB targeted, in the draft or free agency.

I love Powell. He really impressed me last year. That would be a terrific signing.

*****

There has been some talk of signing Brandon Boykin, who the Eagles traded last summer. I would be fine with this, if Boykin would now accept that he’s a slot corner. He desperately wanted a chance on the outside. He never really got that under Chip Kelly and Bill Davis. I happen to think they were right and he was best suited to be the Nickel. Boykin had a frustrating year in Pittsburgh and might embrace a return to being the NB for the Eagles.

And I seem to recall he was kinda decent on STs.

No idea if this is pure speculation or if the Eagles have any real interest.

*****

Wednesday night we should have a new Eagle to talk about (or something very close to that) and lots more rumors to go through.

I can’t wait.

It seems like most of the Roseman haters are eating crow now, but they are still holding on to the “He’s an accountant, a numbers guys, but he can’t evaluate talent” thing.

The Eagles have plenty of people on their scouting staff. The Eagles aren’t paying them to be overruled in the end by the gut feeling of a “football guy”. I’d rather have those opinions and reports being collated in Roseman’s brain calculator.

    Read Moneyball for chrissakes.

  22. 22 xeynon said at 12:43 AM on March 9th, 2016:

We’ll see what happens with Howie’s personnel moves – he’s definitely had some hits during the period he was indisputably in charge (Sproles trade, Barwin and Jenkins signings, the 2012 and 2013 drafts) but he’s had some whiffs as well (re-upping Cooper, Bradley Fletcher, Marcus Smith). That’s true of every NFL personnel guy but I think it’s fair to say the jury is still out to an extent.

However, there’s no question he’s very good at other aspects of the GM job. He’s a smart and responsible manager of the cap, a shrewd judge of value, and an opportunistic and effective trader. After the nightmare that was Chip it’s nice to be rooting for the team doing the fleecing in trades again.

  23. 23 BobSmith77 said at 10:58 AM on March 9th, 2016:

Moneyball is the single most cliched-driven and beat to death point today in sports and about big data/analytics in general.

The reason those early 00s A’s teams were so good wasn’t because of finding that many undervalued OBP hitters but developing a great rotation (which is still largely based on luck given washout rates of pitching prospects due to injury/ineffectiveness) and finding functional relievers.

  24. 24 Cafone said at 11:05 AM on March 9th, 2016:

It may be a cliche, but I’d rather have Howie picking the talent the scouts and coaches recommend than having Andy Reid pick Jaiquawn Jarrett in the 2nd round because he saw him play in person once or Josh Huff in the third round because Oregon.

Howie uses his brain. A significant number of fans want a “football guy” to make the picks with his gut.

  25. 25 BobSmith77 said at 11:43 AM on March 9th, 2016:

We disagree pretty strongly on Roseman but I’m willing to give him 3 drafts to show what he can do.

I just hope that now that he is in charge of player personnel moves that the same level of accountability comes with it. Drives me nuts that lurie has largely publicly absolved him of any real poor move the Eagles have made including dream team I or early draft round busts.

  26. 26 mark2741 said at 4:40 PM on March 9th, 2016:

We are purely speculating as to what Howie has done. Reid was here during the Dream Team. No idea whether Reid wanted those signings or not. Same for 2014. No idea what input Chip had. It makes no sense for a GM (or any personnel guy) to ignore the coaching staff’s opinion.

  27. 27 Gary Barnes said at 12:17 AM on March 9th, 2016:

McKelvin supposedly has not played a full season since 2011. I think that had to have factored in to why the Bills cut him. If he is a depth guy, its not a big deal, but McKelvin should not be relied on to start IMO.

  28. 28 Howie Littlefinger said at 5:42 AM on March 9th, 2016:

Rebuilding to contend as garbage kings of NFCE

  29. 29 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:19 AM on March 9th, 2016:

Building vs contending? Tbis isn’t the NBA…. We are building, while still being in division title or bust mode. Call it what you want, anything short of division title in this crap division is unacceptable….

  30. 30 xeynon said at 12:36 AM on March 9th, 2016:

One of the reasons I think Howie has taken a chainsaw to the “2015 offseason” portion of the roster is a desire to clean up the cap sheet in the longer term – by accelerating all the dead money from Murray, Maxwell, etc. into this year’s cap, when the team is not on the verge of contention and isn’t likely to be bidding for top-notch free agents anyway, he’s cleared the decks for the 2017 and 2018 offseasons when hopefully they’ll be one or two pieces from title contention and will need the flexibility to make a big splash for the right player. Smart long-term asset management, which has always been one of his strengths.

I like the McKelvin signing. He’s had some injury issues and is not Darrelle Revis, but he’s a solid CB and he comes at a low price and without a long-term commitment. This gives them the flexibility to draft a “raw tools” rookie and develop him rather than depending on him to start from day one.

I’d like Bradham as a signing. Schwartz knows him, he’s been productive in the system, and he’s the kind of young, ascending player that smart teams target in free agency.

Mathews was good when healthy when last year, but I’d be okay with letting him go. One of the dumbest things Kelly did last offseason was commit a huge portion of the cap to RBs, a pretty fungible position. Teams like the Ravens and Broncos have shown for years that you can take a pretty average back and turn him into a highly productive player with a good scheme and a good OL. Conversely even a good back like Murray will look bad running behind the hot garbage that was our OL last year.

  107. 107 Mitchell said at 9:13 AM on March 9th, 2016:

Upon further research it looks like there 6 degrees of SC joint injuries. 1-3 all require conservative management with slings/ice/rehab. The recovery for a grade 3 it about 10-12 and is the longest recovery before surgery is needed. If Maxwell could have played in the playoffs it leads me to believe he had a type I or at worst type II. He should be healed or had surgery by now. He very well may have not listened to doctors and made the injury worse.

The good news is that we should hear a resolution to “shoûlder-gate” soon, most fans are hung up on the draft picks we miss out on if the trade gets cancelled, but I would think Roseman and the Eagles are much more worried about what happens to our cap space if they veto the trade.. One way or another we will need to know the outcome of the trade in the next couple hours because it drastically effects our free agent buying power

  131. 131 Fufina said at 9:32 AM on March 9th, 2016:

Well you can always make cap space work, and in the end we are talking about $15mil of money in 2016, which you can spread over 2-3 years with signing bonus money on other contracts without killing the cap long term.

My biggest concern is the fact we would have to bring back a pair of guys into the locker room that know the team does not want them, and apparently Maxwell has hardly been mr professional in 2015… does not look good for team chemistry and play if he is still around under that situation.

  137. 137 Gian GEAGLE said at 10:09 AM on March 9th, 2016:

In am right.,, there are procedures in place. Deal has to be agreed upon, and Maxwell had to agree to restructured contract before it gets to the Physicals… EVERYTHNG is in place, Miami can either push the deal thru or veto it,… If they do veto it as a ploy to renegotiate, it opens HOWIE up to start talking trades with other teams, which is a dangerous game that could end up costing Miami Maxwell, which could hurt them and leave them with no corner if the market dries up. Or a CB needy team strikes out in FA, makes a nice offer to HOWIE, and the price of acquiring Maxwell goes up instead of down blowing up in Miami face.l
    .l
If miami wants to veto this, and renegotiate, they open HOWIE up to renegotiate trades with everyone else…. Probabky all of which is unlikely especially if it’s true that Tannembaum a HOWIE have a good relationship
    ..
Miami is trying to sign Pacman ANd trade for Max, they need two a corners. By the time they veto this the Starting CB market could dry up…

The flip side of the Maxwell trade situation is that, minus the health issues, his value has gone up today. For the acquiring team, he’s at less than $10m per year with about $11 guaranteed. And willing to renegotiate for better terms for the acquiring team. Jenkins is supposedly getting better than $12m/year. That moves the bar for corners way up. If the shoulder issue turns out to be more Miami cold feet than anything, Howie should still have a market to move him.

The two teams also would be swapping first-round picks with the Eagles getting the Dolphins’ No. 8 overall pick and Miami moving down to No. 13. It was pure highway robbery by Eagles GM Howie Roseman just to get Dolphins czar Mike Tannenbaum to take the contracts of Maxwell and Alonso. It appears after a couple days of thought that Tannenbaum is smartening up and getting out of this one. The reason the deal is on life support is allegedly the Dolphins’ concern with Maxwell’s shoulder.

Can’t see the Eagles buying high on a RB.

Contradicts 15 years of Eagles’ front-office philosophy under
    Modrack, Modrack/Reid, Reid/Heckert, Reid/Roseman.

The Eagles in that period put a 1st-Round premium on:

    – Offensive linemen
    – Defensive linemen
    – Cornerbacks

And they grabbed a great QB at the top of the ’99 draft and were set for a decade.
    _____________

Jason Peters is a year or so away from being let go.

Bradford’s on a 1-year deal, if the Eagles want to play it that way.

The last thing the Eagles need is a RB — especially with how successful KC’s offense was with a bunch of no-name RBs after losing HB Jamaal Charles (who himself was 3rd Rd pick).

    By the trade chart . . .
    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/draft/draft-trade-chart/

    (1) Eagles can easily get up to JAX’s spot at No. 5 — if Jags wanna deal — by packaging Detroit’s 3rd (pick 205) and the Titans’ 4th (pk 98).

    (2) Eagles could move up to San Diego’s spot at 3 — Chargers rumored to want to move down — but most likely requires packaging 2017’s 1st Rd pick.

Don’t see Roseman parting with next year’s 1st unless a QB the Eagles covet — in the sort of deeply sinful way the Bible proscribes — is available.

  261. 261 Baloophi said at 12:40 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Don’t forget the possibility of trading back. I suspect that recouping a 2nd rounder after the Bradford trade is high on Roseman’s wish list. As always, there’s great value in round 2.

Chicago and New Orleans could desire a QB or a falling D-line stud. Also, after their own success with large receivers and getting destroyed by Megatron for years, the Bears may not be able to resist hometown talent Laquon Treadwell…

  262. 262 eagleyankfan said at 12:47 PM on March 9th, 2016:

I like McLeod but that is a lot of money for him. Have to see the structure. The $17M guaranteed could be in the first 3 seasons with high bases in years 4 or 5 that easy to get out of. $17M guaranteed isn’t a lot.

Average out to about 7,5/tear which seems quite fair for a player of McCleouds level. Well beneath the Thomas’ and Berry’s 10/year, and a little less than Malcolm Jenkins’ contract. Seems right since McCleod isn’t Berry/Thomas and are maybe just a smudge more unproven than Jenkins but played to a similar-ish level.

  325. 325 FairOaks said at 1:00 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Most Roseman contracts (really, most NFL contracts) can be gotten out of after two years. Or, with a trade, after one year after he just proved with Maxwell and Murray. No way this contract is as punishing as those. “guaranteed” might involve not-fully-guaranteed roster bonuses in year three as well. I’m sure there is a decent signing bonus, and fully-guaranteed first-year salary, and probably some second-year salary.

  345. 345 eagleyankfan said at 12:56 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  352. 352 FairOaks said at 1:19 PM on March 9th, 2016:

He was OK as a starter in 2014. You would rather not start over with a new QB if you’re a coach, and he was going to be one of the better backups on the market. So yes, it made sense. It was discouraging that he didn’t improve, and that the defense absolutely went to pieces as soon as he came in — not sure how to read that part. But I’m much happier with a backup QB who knows the system (and that is Daniels now).

  372. 372 FairOaks said at 1:04 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Figured. May also have been due to the public reaction after the leaked deal, and they made up concerns about the shoulder to threaten the deal. So maybe we can blame Allbright instead 😉

  373. 373 ACViking said at 1:07 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Allbright also mentioned a deal-gone-bad 2 years ago that left some hard feelings.

Didn’t say the players or who was responsible.

Was it the Dion Jordan for B-Graham deal?

    Some other trade?

    Who pulled the plug?

  374. 374 Tumtum said at 1:14 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Hrmm. Eagles had deal in place for dolphins pick but realized no one above them would draft Dion and back out. Dolphins pick Dion to spite them. Boom.

    Fun speculation.

  375. 375 D3FB said at 2:18 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Dolphins were picking like 12 originally. They traded up to 3.

  376. 376 FairOaks said at 2:48 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Yeah, but that move seemed so ridiculous, it’s conceivable there was an Eagles part of that which we backed out of. Maybe they wanted Lane Johnson and we were only OK with it if we got Dion Jordan, but then decided to keep Johnson instead. Or something nefarious like that 🙂

But per above Allbright said two years ago, and the Jordan / Johnson draft was three years ago, so that’s not it. There were rumors for quite a while that we were going to trade for Jordan (possibly using Graham) two years ago, but nothing ever came of it — but maybe it got closer than we knew.

  377. 377 D3FB said at 2:52 PM on March 9th, 2016:

I mean it only cost them a 3 to move all the way up. And they jumped us. There’s no conceivable way it involved the Eagles. They are just a dysfunctional franchise.

The hurt feelings probably involved the 2014 draft. They were picking 19, we were picking 22. They stayed put and took a T that was considered a fringe top 40 guy. We missed out on everything. I’d imagine Howie had a price to trade up with them and then when they saw what people were getting they jacked it up and pissed off Howie.

  378. 378 FairOaks said at 4:34 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Yeah, from Allbright’s comment it was clearly the 2014 draft at issue. Or something leading up to the draft. It could be something like you mention, or something involving Dion Jordan. Not enough detail to really speculate, but I think your scenario probably makes the most sense — the Eagles wanted to trade up to ensure getting one of their six targets, and I could easily see the Dolphins pulling out of a pre-negotiated deal once the value of trade-ups escalated during that draft.

I wonder if that was part of the Eagles front office friction — Kelly may have wanted to do the trade anyways, where Roseman thought the new asking price was too high and went for value (trade-down then MSII).

  379. 379 Joe Minx said at 1:18 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  382. 382 FairOaks said at 1:10 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Either Pederson does not like that style of runner, or maybe the Eagles didn’t think they could trade Murray and the rumor predated that trade. I’m sort of hoping for the latter.

  383. 383 scratcherk said at 1:11 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  386. 386 Cafone said at 1:48 PM on March 9th, 2016:

They probably want a feature back that is more dependable. I like Mathews too, but he’s a luxury when you need to sign a second RB to pair with him who you are comfortable giving a lot of carries.

  387. 387 Baloophi said at 1:07 PM on March 9th, 2016:

So by swapping 4th rounders with the Titans in exchange for Murray, we’ll get the second pick of that round. Meaning – if we don’t trade it – we’ll have the second pick of the day on Saturday… which makes for fun discussion Friday night.

A Backüp our coach Trusts, knows well, who knows the offense and Pederson talked about how Chase is a guy that really cares about helping the starting QB prepare for each game. Im sure he can help groom our rookie QB… Trading sanchez and going with SAM and Chase was my ideal scenario, if we can get a QB without using the #8 position, they will have delivered everything I wanted to see from the QB position..

Yeah Chip seemed to have a weakness for the “looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane” types. Overlooked the fact that some of the best players in NFL history at their respective positions tested as too small/slow/short/etc.

Lewis is one of the guys I was thinking of with that previous comment. Others who were very good-to-great players but would’ve been off Chip’s draft board because of lack of elite measurables: John Randle, Dwight Freeney, Zach Thomas, Elvis Dumervil, Darrell Green, Jerry Rice, Blaine Bishop, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch. He seemed to forget that NFL players play football, not compete in the decathlon or Mr. Universe contest.

Now that is some interesting optionality… imagine if we trade him to the Broncos…. for their 31st pick. Wait till draft day (we pay an extra 5.5 not doing it earlier but that just further helps his trade value making the contract closer to 15mil a year for the Broncos), we get to jump up get our QB without people knowing we need one, and then trade for that late 1st.

  499. 499 Nick C said at 2:59 PM on March 9th, 2016:

So I am estimating that we still have about 13-16M in cap space, and a bit more when Sanchez is released or traded. We still need 2 OG (one with Tackle versatility), OLB, CB1 and depth, WR depth, RB depth. Some of these I expect to be addressed in the draft, but I would expect at least 1 Guard and OLB. I definitely would not be surprised to see another trade or two over the next few weeks though.

  500. 500 Insomniac said at 3:00 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  501. 501 TypicalDouche said at 3:03 PM on March 9th, 2016:

No one in the Denver or Houston front offices thought much of his final 7 games.

    Hence, no market for him.

  545. 545 Dave said at 3:55 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Or maybe he wasn’t lying during his press conference and really did make a connection with his teammates and liked the fanbase and had no desire to test the free agent market.

  546. 546 ACViking said at 3:58 PM on March 9th, 2016:

    Dave . . .

Could be. I take at face value the locker room stuff.

The 1-year-plus-option structure of the deal, though, suggests both sides are proceeding with caution.

If the market were better for SB, I think he’d have tried FA. Basing that on the 1+ deal.

  693. 693 D3FB said at 3:56 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Perfect world sure but we have Lane, he’s being paid LT money and you can have mirrored T’s. The John Runyans of the world are becoming less common.

  696. 696 ACViking said at 4:01 PM on March 9th, 2016:

    Coach —

    Two questions for you.

First, Stanley, Jack, Hargreaves III are on the board at 8 (no trade up/down).

Who do you select and why?

Second, do you think Stanley could do one good season at LG — like Jonathan Ogden did for the Ravens his rookie year — before kicking over to RT?
[You may have answered this in the past with, “no.” Not 100% sure.]

    Ravens (#6)?

Who’s a good comparator for Jack?

  699. 699 D3FB said at 4:07 PM on March 9th, 2016:

People who like Jack use Keuchley or Bowmann.

People who don’t use Alec Ogletree.

  700. 700 D3FB said at 4:06 PM on March 9th, 2016:

I haven’t watched Jack or Hargraves more than casually. And haven’t really ripped Stanley apart.

I think you’d be fine with any of the three (although trade up for Goff is the real answer this was obviously a trick question).

And no I don’t buy Stanley at G. You could do it but it’s square peg round hole.

  701. 701 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:08 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Sure, why not.. JP probably doesmt have many healthy seasons left in the tank, even if Stanley sits on the bench for a year, that’s a’good thing, not a problem..
    ..
And with our new Guard signing, even if we draft a tackle Who can’t play Guard, Gardmer, Barbe, Tobin and some 3rd or 4th round Guard competitipn should be able to provide a capable starter opposite of Brooks..
    ..
Also, Today Jason Peters might be able to scoff at moving to Guard because he is “the best we have at LT”, but he loves being an eagle and seems to really want to retire here, and he isn’t ready to retire. He can feel that way now, but the man ISNT stupid,if we draft a tackle in the top 10, he will see the writing on the wall, and maybe that gets Him to consider possibly finishing his Eagle career at Guard, instead of being stubborn causing him to get cut and have to finish what little career he has left in another city.
    ..
stanley may not last TIL #8, and there is probably a kid or two I would prefer. But I see no reason Why he wouldn’t get some serious consideration if he is stll available, and even if he doesn’t start as a rookie, he would still provide tremendous value

    McLeod base salaries: $1m, $4m, $6m, $7.5m, $8.5m. SB $8m. ’16 & ’17 base fully guar. $200K Pro Bowl escalators ’17-’20. 5 yrs, $35 million.

That’s only $13M guaranteed. I’d guess the other $4M “guar” is an injury only guaranteed of part of the 2018 base salary. 2016 cap hit is $2.6M.

  757. 757 Nick C said at 4:16 PM on March 9th, 2016:

We keep back-loading these contracts, we are going to be in a bad future situation.

  758. 758 Dude said at 4:17 PM on March 9th, 2016:

The back ends of these contracts aren’t guaranteed. We can get out of them, usually after year 2 or 3 without hurting the cap.

  759. 759 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:17 PM on March 9th, 2016:

As if Roseman doesn’t have the Cap covered.. He is the best in the business when it comes to this part of the GM game

Can always re-work contracts with a guy you want to keep.

  761. 761 TypicalDouche said at 4:20 PM on March 9th, 2016:

A contract back loaded like that is easy to get out of friend. The money is no longer guaranteed so they can cut the player outright with no real ramifications.

  762. 762 Nick C said at 4:20 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Yeah I know. Maybe I’m just venting after seeing the Chase Daniel contract.

  763. 763 TypicalDouche said at 4:22 PM on March 9th, 2016:

    Completely understandable.

  764. 764 anon said at 4:29 PM on March 9th, 2016:

“easy to get out of”. Think you saw in 2014/2015 what happens when those contracts come to roost. Players aren’t always trying to take a caut.

  765. 765 TypicalDouche said at 4:31 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Not saying for the players to take a pay cut but the team can dump the player with the non guaranteed years left on the deal.

  767. 767 TypicalDouche said at 4:36 PM on March 9th, 2016:

That’s a totally different situation. Nick was in the thinking we are going to be a bad cap space with the way the back end is set up.

  769. 769 Fufina said at 4:16 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Very reasonable deal… 13m is basically a 2 year 6.5mil deal which is frankly a bargain.

  770. 770 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:16 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Broncos should sign Kurt Cousins to a big offer sheet, who cares if they have to give the skins Two picks at the end of round 1…. Probably won’t work, but what do they have to lose at this poïnt?
    ..
Probably rather give up two first rounders for Cousins, than trade for Garbage Kapernick or get stuck with Rg3..

    Fitzpatrik to denver?

  808. 808 jaws80 said at 4:38 PM on March 9th, 2016:

i, and most of us, was thinking Chase would sign for less than Sanchez, Sanchez cut or traded, and thus save money.

Just keep Sanchez if Sanchez is cheaper. But i guess Chase according to Pederson is that much better than Sanchez.

  809. 809 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:50 PM on March 9th, 2016:

I dunno, I would think that the top Backüp QB on the market two years from now will get more than Chase got Today..
    ..
i think its best to just judge every deal on the first two years of the contract. Years 3,4,5 of contracts I automatically assume are Bullshit. If the player plays well, he will get a new deal after year two, if he plays bad he will be cut or asked to take a pay cut after year two, if we want to keep a guy who has been average but we get into cap trouble, we let HOWIE do his contract gymnastics and renegotiate to free up money… I haven’t looked at the details of Chase deal yet, but the first two years are all im concerned with.
    ..
If we can trade Sanchez, I don’t mind paying a little more for a guy who are coach knows well and already knows the offense… I’ll be more annoyed if we get stuck having to cut Sanchez

  810. 810 Tumtum said at 4:39 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Seems a little odd to me, not really sure what back up value is these days. Have to imagine it is more when SB is the starter. Do recall the Ravens paying Bulger over 6 mil a year a few years back. They don’t call it the best job in sports for nothing.

  811. 811 FairOaks said at 4:49 PM on March 9th, 2016:

The Chiefs paid him some rather high salaries to be the backup there as well. Not a clue if he actually deserves it or not.

Deal does seem awfully rich. $12 fully guaranteed is a lot, though a fair bit of that is probably a signing bonus prorated out for a while. Bradford is basically on a one-year deal so I can see having Daniel as insurance for next year so that we aren’t desperate to keep Sam, but the numbers still seem really high. Need to see the full structure but I’m rather surprised at that price.

We will save 3.5 to 4.5 million on the cap if we get rid of Sanchez (if we trade it’s 4.5, and if we cut and there is offset language and he signs elsewhere for over $1 million it’s also 4.5), so that could cover this year at least. But there must be some pretty hefty numbers later on — maybe the third year salary is starter-level so we’d have to release by then if he’s not starting. Might even be the case for 2017 — we might have to choose between Daniel and Bradford (or neither).

  812. 812 Steve Smegal said at 4:50 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Perhaps bu considering we still have some holes to fill and are running out of capspace, this was an unnecessary luxury

  815. 815 jaws80 said at 4:40 PM on March 9th, 2016:

yeah, if 6 teams chasing Chase, we can dangle Sanchez out to some of those teams. Worth a 4th, 5th for a semi-quality backup, who some called last year the league’s best back up.

  816. 816 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:44 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  875. 875 Fufina said at 5:20 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Too soon without Both Daniel and Brooks contract info,

But lets assume that Daniels gets $12mil in the next 2 years, McLoud gets $13mil (cap hit in those 2 years will be $9.5), And Brooks gets $15mil (12mil cap hit), that eats ~32mil of cap space over the next 2 years. and Eagles currently have about $60mil of cumulative space.

However you need to add 2 years of draft picks ~8mil, and Cox’s 2017 Tag value at ~14mil… and you are running out of space FAST.

  878. 878 laeagle said at 5:23 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Safety counts $2.5M this year. So total contract is misleading. It’s a good question. How much actual cap space is there left this year. Good to know b/c Cox’s cap figure will probably be at least $10M, though part of that is offset by his current cap hit (only need to pay difference). That gives an idea of how much of this year’s cap space we have to play with. Despite however contracts are massaged in later years, you still need a few million per player for this year.

  902. 902 unhinged said at 5:33 PM on March 9th, 2016:

I’ll take issue with your use of the term “massive”. If you stipulate that just about everybody overpays in FA, particularly at OL DL CB, and you look at Vernon’s history and age (25), I think the 85 Mil is rich, but not altogether foolish. He was the best pass rusher in FA, he’s been pretty durable, and he achieved star status playing across from a great star in Wake. Clearly the Giants are chasing the spectre of their last 2 SB wins, where their DL was the MVP. If I am not wrong, they will be adding more to that DL in the draft. Vernon’s contract is a gamble, but if NY wins a playoff game next season, it will have been deemed worth it, I think.

I would have considered Vernon a very good young edge rusher regardless of what other edge rushers were available in FA… Good young player who’s best is still ahead of him…
    ..
It was much easier to laugh at the Giants defense yesterday when their DL Wasnt JPP, dame harrison, Hankins, Vernon..

  905. 905 Joe Minx said at 5:27 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Had 81 combined sacks, hits, & hurries last year.

That’s a good signing even if they did overpay.

    In that case, excellent news.

    Yup.

  909. 909 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:57 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Yeah he can play… As Eagles fans on sunday we will much rather see the Giants have an extra 17mil in Cap space, than to see them throw Vernon at us..
    ..
I don’t know how he fits into their cap situatipn, how he compares to recent FA edge rusher contracts, but he does make that defense much better than it was yesterday.. I don’t care to debate Janoris Jenkins contract, but Janoris/DRC make them a better defense than they were yesterday with DRC and Princess Amakamura

    $17 mil for a 7 sack a year guy.

When you blow Draft after Draft, you are forced to pay crazy money for someone else’s talent.. If that player doesn’t produce and you botch the overpaying free agent to make up for your Botched Drafting,,,. There isn’t much left for you to fuck up as a GM…

  917. 917 Nick C said at 5:17 PM on March 9th, 2016:

So with all this turnover, and the fact that Peters won’t take a pay cut or move to Guard, would anyone else be down with moving on from him this offseason?I would like to get an asset if we could, but ya never know.

I am all for continuity on the Offensive Line, but the sooner we get the new guys working together, the quicker that chemistry can develop. Maybe go after Schwartz now, or if we grab Stanley in the 1st round– I would like these guys to be developing that chemistry as early as they can.

  919. 919 since1961 said at 6:26 PM on March 9th, 2016:

  921. 921 Gian GEAGLE said at 5:31 PM on March 9th, 2016:

Id rather not,,. And I got the impression that the eagles won’t be making him as a surprise cut..
    ..
Why would anyone want to move Peters? For starters you can’t move him TIL we make sure we got a tackle in the draft, but at that point why would we rather get rid of Peters instead of having Peters and a rookie? We aren’t going to do anything significant with the money we free up.. So I don’t get the upside in cutting Peters after the draft? The Eagles will sigń maybe another starter or two, and a backüp or two, and draft the rest of our team… Why get rid of him if there won’t be any immediate need for the money we would free up?
    ..
We shouldn’t look at a top 10 pick spending his first year on the bench as the end up the world. I view that as Best case scenario, I view that as “If we are lucky, our top 10 pick won’t have to play right away”

If Peters ISNT going to be an Eagle this year, it BETTER be because we want to free up money to improve our team in Free agency NOW..
    ..
Also, it’s easy for JP to scoff at moving to Guard now, watch how he changes his tune if we draft a Takle at #8 and he sees the writing on the wall that if he doesn’t ok the move to guard, he will have to finish the end of his career somewhere else.. Drafting Stanley could be the move that makes him more open to consideringa move to Guard if that’s what he has to do to end his career as an eagle which seems important to him

  937. 937 Cafone said at 5:29 PM on March 9th, 2016:
