Eagles Add CB, Rumors Abound
Posted: March 8th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 1,329 Comments »The Eagles signed CB Leodis McKelvin on Tuesday. He had been cut by Buffalo recently so he was eligible to sign right away and didn’t have to wait for the league year to start on Wednesday.
Jimmy Bama has the details on McKelvin, who signed a 2-year deal. The obvious attraction to McKelvin is that he played for Jim Schwartz in Buffalo in 2014. McKelvin had a career high 4 INTs that year despite only playing in 10 games.
McKelvin was rumored to have a visit set up for Dallas, but said he signed with the Eagles because he wanted to play for Schwartz and also didn’t want to drag out the process. He’s dealt with injuries in recent years (nothing drastic), but is completely healthy right now and wants to focus on training to be ready for the 2016 season.
Buffalo cut McKelvin because they had cap issues. It wasn’t a case that he was no longer a solid starter. McKelvin was asked if the Eagles told him he would start or what exactly his role might be. He said nothing was definitive and that he was just here to contribute and compete. That’s what you want to hear from a veteran.
McKelvin has a very good chance to be a starting CB. The Eagles will have him compete with the young guys already in place. The team could add a CB early in the draft. They are also still in touch with Nolan Carroll about returning. They aren’t putting all their eggs in one basket. There were reports that the Eagles had interest in free agent CB Patrick Robinson. That could be another piece of the puzzle.

The Eagles need a SAM LB. Bradham has played that spot (as well as WIL) and played for Schwartz. He would be a good, reasonably priced addition to the LB corps. The Eagles have been linked to Tahir Whitehead of the Lions as a FA target. Bradham could be a someone else to talk to in case things don’t work out with Whitehead. Or the Eagles could add both players (if the price is right). The team needs a SAM LB and depth.
Bradham did post his best numbers in Schwartz’s defense in 2014 so you can see why both sides would be interested in each other.

I would be fine with cutting Mark Sanchez and spending that money to sign Daniel. I don’t really trust Sanchez right now. Daniel doesn’t have the most compelling resume, but he’s been a solid backup for several years now. He knows Doug Pederson and what he wants. QBs like that have value when helping a team learn a new coach’s offense.

Jason La Canfora thinks Ryan Mathews could still be on the move.
Roseman is motivated to pawn off running back Ryan Mathews as well, I continue to hear, and will probably take next to nothing to move him. They may be positioned to draft a back in the first round, and I would not be surprised at all if the takes the future cash and cap savings from shipping off Murray and Maxwell and invests it in an extension for Fletcher Cox and perhaps a free-agent corner as well (he’s dabbled in that market with some regularity).
La Canfora hated Chip Kelly and was out of the loop for a while, but now is tuned back in to what the Eagles are thinking and doing. Listen to him.
Why deal Mathews, who played well last year?
RB is a position where you shouldn’t overpay anyone. Mathews isn’t making big bucks, but isn’t cheap either. He missed 3 full games last year and was hurt in others. He missed 10 games the year before that. Mathews will turn 29 this season. That’s not a great overall description.
I do wonder if the Eagles have some RB targeted, in the draft or free agency.
Took a look at low-cost options at RB for the Eagles in FA. Two I came up with that could make sense are Bilal Powell (Jets) and Chris Polk.

There has been some talk of signing Brandon Boykin, who the Eagles traded last summer. I would be fine with this, if Boykin would now accept that he’s a slot corner. He desperately wanted a chance on the outside. He never really got that under Chip Kelly and Bill Davis. I happen to think they were right and he was best suited to be the Nickel. Boykin had a frustrating year in Pittsburgh and might embrace a return to being the NB for the Eagles.
And I seem to recall he was kinda decent on STs.
No idea if this is pure speculation or if the Eagles have any real interest.

It seems like most of the Roseman haters are eating crow now, but they are still holding on to the “He’s an accountant, a numbers guys, but he can’t evaluate talent” thing.
The Eagles have plenty of people on their scouting staff. The Eagles aren’t paying them to be overruled in the end by the gut feeling of a “football guy”. I’d rather have those opinions and reports being collated in Roseman’s brain calculator.

We’ll see what happens with Howie’s personnel moves – he’s definitely had some hits during the period he was indisputably in charge (Sproles trade, Barwin and Jenkins signings, the 2012 and 2013 drafts) but he’s had some whiffs as well (re-upping Cooper, Bradley Fletcher, Marcus Smith). That’s true of every NFL personnel guy but I think it’s fair to say the jury is still out to an extent.
However, there’s no question he’s very good at other aspects of the GM job. He’s a smart and responsible manager of the cap, a shrewd judge of value, and an opportunistic and effective trader. After the nightmare that was Chip it’s nice to be rooting for the team doing the fleecing in trades again.
Moneyball is the single most cliched-driven and beat to death point today in sports and about big data/analytics in general.
The reason those early 00s A’s teams were so good wasn’t because of finding that many undervalued OBP hitters but developing a great rotation (which is still largely based on luck given washout rates of pitching prospects due to injury/ineffectiveness) and finding functional relievers.
It may be a cliche, but I’d rather have Howie picking the talent the scouts and coaches recommend than having Andy Reid pick Jaiquawn Jarrett in the 2nd round because he saw him play in person once or Josh Huff in the third round because Oregon.
Howie uses his brain. A significant number of fans want a “football guy” to make the picks with his gut.
We disagree pretty strongly on Roseman but I’m willing to give him 3 drafts to show what he can do.
I just hope that now that he is in charge of player personnel moves that the same level of accountability comes with it. Drives me nuts that lurie has largely publicly absolved him of any real poor move the Eagles have made including dream team I or early draft round busts.
We are purely speculating as to what Howie has done. Reid was here during the Dream Team. No idea whether Reid wanted those signings or not. Same for 2014. No idea what input Chip had. It makes no sense for a GM (or any personnel guy) to ignore the coaching staff’s opinion.
McKelvin supposedly has not played a full season since 2011. I think that had to have factored in to why the Bills cut him. If he is a depth guy, its not a big deal, but McKelvin should not be relied on to start IMO.

Building vs contending? Tbis isn’t the NBA…. We are building, while still being in division title or bust mode. Call it what you want, anything short of division title in this crap division is unacceptable….
One of the reasons I think Howie has taken a chainsaw to the “2015 offseason” portion of the roster is a desire to clean up the cap sheet in the longer term – by accelerating all the dead money from Murray, Maxwell, etc. into this year’s cap, when the team is not on the verge of contention and isn’t likely to be bidding for top-notch free agents anyway, he’s cleared the decks for the 2017 and 2018 offseasons when hopefully they’ll be one or two pieces from title contention and will need the flexibility to make a big splash for the right player. Smart long-term asset management, which has always been one of his strengths.
I like the McKelvin signing. He’s had some injury issues and is not Darrelle Revis, but he’s a solid CB and he comes at a low price and without a long-term commitment. This gives them the flexibility to draft a “raw tools” rookie and develop him rather than depending on him to start from day one.
I’d like Bradham as a signing. Schwartz knows him, he’s been productive in the system, and he’s the kind of young, ascending player that smart teams target in free agency.
Mathews was good when healthy when last year, but I’d be okay with letting him go. One of the dumbest things Kelly did last offseason was commit a huge portion of the cap to RBs, a pretty fungible position. Teams like the Ravens and Broncos have shown for years that you can take a pretty average back and turn him into a highly productive player with a good scheme and a good OL. Conversely even a good back like Murray will look bad running behind the hot garbage that was our OL last year.
I’m all aboard the bring back Boykin and Polk train.
Ironic that McKelvin “didn’t want to drag out the process” seeing as that’s all his predecessor wanted to do…

Physicals have been standard procedure for trades for a long time so if 20 years ago trades still hindered on physicals then yes this trade would be going the same way.

That seems weird to me. I wouldn’t think anything major or we would have heard about it. I’m thinking a shoulder strain/pec strain.
If that’s what it is, it shouldn’t be a big deal. Its really annoying he didn’t seek treatment/ get it rehab’d this off season so far.
Its been 3 months. It should have healed by its self by now.
Unless it was like a grade 1 and he didn’t listen and kept doing bench press etc and it progressed to a grade 2/3.

Upon further research it looks like there 6 degrees of SC joint injuries. 1-3 all require conservative management with slings/ice/rehab. The recovery for a grade 3 it about 10-12 and is the longest recovery before surgery is needed. If Maxwell could have played in the playoffs it leads me to believe he had a type I or at worst type II. He should be healed or had surgery by now. He very well may have not listened to doctors and made the injury worse.
Maybe we would’ve made the playoffs if he had “played” in the first two games…

I think it’s all just a big misunderstanding. The Dolphins asked Maxwell to do some bench presses – he replied, as we would expect, that the bar looked really heavy. So they said “how about just some push ups”. An outraged BM said “you want me to get on the ground?!”. Not knowing BM like we do, the Dolphins are just assuming that there must be a shoulder problem

The good news is that we should hear a resolution to “shoûlder-gate” soon, most fans are hung up on the draft picks we miss out on if the trade gets cancelled, but I would think Roseman and the Eagles are much more worried about what happens to our cap space if they veto the trade.. One way or another we will need to know the outcome of the trade in the next couple hours because it drastically effects our free agent buying power
Well you can always make cap space work, and in the end we are talking about $15mil of money in 2016, which you can spread over 2-3 years with signing bonus money on other contracts without killing the cap long term.
My biggest concern is the fact we would have to bring back a pair of guys into the locker room that know the team does not want them, and apparently Maxwell has hardly been mr professional in 2015… does not look good for team chemistry and play if he is still around under that situation.
MIA better figure this out, or I’m going to………be really angry…..and maybe write some stuff on this forum…

Deal has to be agreed upon, and Maxwell had to agree to restructured contract before it gets to the Physicals… EVERYTHNG is in place, Miami can either push the deal thru or veto it,… If they do veto it as a ploy to renegotiate, it opens HOWIE up to start talking trades with other teams, which is a dangerous game that could end up costing Miami Maxwell, which could hurt them and leave them with no corner if the market dries up. Or a CB needy team strikes out in FA, makes a nice offer to HOWIE, and the price of acquiring Maxwell goes up instead of down blowing up in Miami face.l

The flip side of the Maxwell trade situation is that, minus the health issues, his value has gone up today. For the acquiring team, he’s at less than $10m per year with about $11 guaranteed. And willing to renegotiate for better terms for the acquiring team. Jenkins is supposedly getting better than $12m/year. That moves the bar for corners way up. If the shoulder issue turns out to be more Miami cold feet than anything, Howie should still have a market to move him.
If Maxwell was at the doctor already this morning, we should be hearing something soon..

Why do I have a feeling with deal with the Dolphins is going to end up like the one with the Rams for Bradford where the original deal was much better than the final actual deal?
The Daniel rumors keep circulating. Are the Eagles going to dip into ex-Chief players just as they did for ex-Ducks’ players the next year or two?
ESPN’s Ed Werder reports the trade sending CB Byron Maxwell and WLB Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins is “considered dead.”
The two teams also would be swapping first-round picks with the Eagles getting the Dolphins’ No. 8 overall pick and Miami moving down to No. 13. It was pure highway robbery by Eagles GM Howie Roseman just to get Dolphins czar Mike Tannenbaum to take the contracts of Maxwell and Alonso. It appears after a couple days of thought that Tannenbaum is smartening up and getting out of this one. The reason the deal is on life support is allegedly the Dolphins’ concern with Maxwell’s shoulder.
This is one case where the Internet and 21st century media almost inevitably had a huge impact on this potential trade. It got lambasted just about everywhere including little support in Miami.

Eskin used to be almost dead on with Eagles’ rumors and broke a ton of big Eagles’ stories over the years including about their possibility of relocating to Arizona.
Just doesn’t seem to have the same connections anymore and gets a lot of stuff wrong/inaccurate especially on details of transactions or player personnel moves.

According to the NFL value chart those 5 spots in first round is equivalent to a high third round pick FWIW.
Under the new CBA, early picks are worth more, so more like mid 2nd

I live in Ohio and am an OSU fan. Zeke is a beast…but I’m just skeptical of drafting a RB that high. In my opinion he better be hall of fame worthy to be picked that high. Too many good running backs drafted late for me to like it.

Can’t see the Eagles buying high on a RB.
Contradicts 15 years of Eagles’ front-office philosophy under
Modrack, Modrack/Reid, Reid/Heckert, Reid/Roseman.
The Eagles in that period put a 1st-Round premium on:
– Offensive linemen
– Defensive linemen
– Cornerbacks
And they grabbed a great QB at the top of the ’99 draft and were set for a decade.

I didn’t have high expectations given the Murray contract and play. I love the fact that we will be the first pick in day 3. We will have tons of time to regroup from the first two days, then decide if a guy slipped through the three rounds. Even better, you gain a unique position to negotiate all night with other teams of you want to trade back.

Ok everyone… I would formally like to apologize for blasting this move. I was proven wrong in compensation as I really had hoped I would be. Really I always sort of expected it to be good, since Howie is just a boss that way.
Happy to be wrong. I am a fan, very reactionary, and grumpy as hell sometimes. Not to mention the whole Sam Bradford trade which is still a serious head scratcher.

McLeod is a natural free safety so I feel he is an upgrade over Thurmond who just learned the position. This also frees up Jenkins to continue manning the slot and gives Schwartz the option to stay in base against 3 WR sets.
Kempski profiled Iloka first, McLeod second, and Husain Abdullah third in his safety targets in free agency.

Rodney McLeod – Rams – Love watching this guy play. Lacks ideal size at 5-10, 195, but he is a big hitter. Had 3 FFs last year (8 in his career). Rams tend to line him up deep. Comes down aggressively vs the run. Finished third on the team in tackles. Also shows good range in the pass game. Could be a great value signing.
I like McLeod but that is a lot of money for him. Have to see the structure. The $17M guaranteed could be in the first 3 seasons with high bases in years 4 or 5 that easy to get out of. $17M guaranteed isn’t a lot.
To be fair, we don’t know yet whether the $37 million is in American currency…

Average out to about 7,5/tear which seems quite fair for a player of McCleouds level. Well beneath the Thomas’ and Berry’s 10/year, and a little less than Malcolm Jenkins’ contract. Seems right since McCleod isn’t Berry/Thomas and are maybe just a smudge more unproven than Jenkins but played to a similar-ish level.
Most Roseman contracts (really, most NFL contracts) can be gotten out of after two years. Or, with a trade, after one year after he just proved with Maxwell and Murray. No way this contract is as punishing as those. “guaranteed” might involve not-fully-guaranteed roster bonuses in year three as well. I’m sure there is a decent signing bonus, and fully-guaranteed first-year salary, and probably some second-year salary.

He was OK as a starter in 2014. You would rather not start over with a new QB if you’re a coach, and he was going to be one of the better backups on the market. So yes, it made sense. It was discouraging that he didn’t improve, and that the defense absolutely went to pieces as soon as he came in — not sure how to read that part. But I’m much happier with a backup QB who knows the system (and that is Daniels now).

Yeah, but that move seemed so ridiculous, it’s conceivable there was an Eagles part of that which we backed out of. Maybe they wanted Lane Johnson and we were only OK with it if we got Dion Jordan, but then decided to keep Johnson instead. Or something nefarious like that 🙂
But per above Allbright said two years ago, and the Jordan / Johnson draft was three years ago, so that’s not it. There were rumors for quite a while that we were going to trade for Jordan (possibly using Graham) two years ago, but nothing ever came of it — but maybe it got closer than we knew.
I mean it only cost them a 3 to move all the way up. And they jumped us. There’s no conceivable way it involved the Eagles. They are just a dysfunctional franchise.
The hurt feelings probably involved the 2014 draft. They were picking 19, we were picking 22. They stayed put and took a T that was considered a fringe top 40 guy. We missed out on everything. I’d imagine Howie had a price to trade up with them and then when they saw what people were getting they jacked it up and pissed off Howie.
Yeah, from Allbright’s comment it was clearly the 2014 draft at issue. Or something leading up to the draft. It could be something like you mention, or something involving Dion Jordan. Not enough detail to really speculate, but I think your scenario probably makes the most sense — the Eagles wanted to trade up to ensure getting one of their six targets, and I could easily see the Dolphins pulling out of a pre-negotiated deal once the value of trade-ups escalated during that draft.
I wonder if that was part of the Eagles front office friction — Kelly may have wanted to do the trade anyways, where Roseman thought the new asking price was too high and went for value (trade-down then MSII).

Either Pederson does not like that style of runner, or maybe the Eagles didn’t think they could trade Murray and the rumor predated that trade. I’m sort of hoping for the latter.

They probably want a feature back that is more dependable. I like Mathews too, but he’s a luxury when you need to sign a second RB to pair with him who you are comfortable giving a lot of carries.
So by swapping 4th rounders with the Titans in exchange for Murray, we’ll get the second pick of that round. Meaning – if we don’t trade it – we’ll have the second pick of the day on Saturday… which makes for fun discussion Friday night.

Just imagine what we had gotten for DeSean and LeSean? If you translate this year’s compensation for less talent, you’ll probably have received 4 1st rounders for those two guys. lol
I’m not even demanding huge value. But guys like Mathis or DeSean who were cut due to big salaries did have at least some trade value. If you don’t air out all your issues with that player in the media and at least attempt to show that there is some willingness to keep them (see reports that immediately followed early stories about Murray not wanting to be back her), you can get value.
It’s almost as if in the marketplace that is professional sports, players are assets, assets that derive their value from, among other variables, their performance, money they are owed, and PUBLIC PERCEPTION THAT CAN BE IMPACTED BY YOU, YES YOU, THE HEAD COACH OF THE TEAM.
I truly believe that Chip would have just released Murray if he were still the GM.

Rodney McLeod is 25 y/o, despite his smaller-than-average size is a huge hitter (look up the video of him laying out Emmanuel Sanders) while still being a good cover guy, and was rated the 10th best safety in the NFL last year by Pro Football Focus. Nice signing.

He seemed to forget that NFL players play football, not compete in the decathlon or Mr. Universe contest.

The only CBs at 6’00” or taller he inherited — like Bills CB Stephon Gilmore.
Since Schwartz has a much better track record of fielding good NFL defenses than Billy Davis or Chip Kelly, I’ll trust him on the implication that having guys over 6’0″ doesn’t matter that much.

So I am estimating that we still have about 13-16M in cap space, and a bit more when Sanchez is released or traded. We still need 2 OG (one with Tackle versatility), OLB, CB1 and depth, WR depth, RB depth. Some of these I expect to be addressed in the draft, but I would expect at least 1 Guard and OLB. I definitely would not be surprised to see another trade or two over the next few weeks though.

If Hargreaves is the best option at 8 then the Eagles need to explore every option to trade down. Too many quality corners to be had in the later rounds to take a corner at 8.
None of them are guaranteed to be available for us to pick.
Stanley is not a top 5 player. Top 4 talents are Tunsil, Ramsey, Bosa, Jack. The 2 QB’s go in the top 7 (including 1 at 2), and then you are into the next tier of prospects.

stanley may not last TIL #8, and there is probably a kid or two I would prefer. But I see no reason Why he wouldn’t get some serious consideration if he is stll available, and even if he doesn’t start as a rookie, he would still provide tremendous value

Chase Daniel is horrible contract but, you double down because of familiarity with Dougs system and Bradfords injury history I guess.

i think its best to just judge every deal on the first two years of the contract. Years 3,4,5 of contracts I automatically assume are Bullshit. If the player plays well, he will get a new deal after year two, if he plays bad he will be cut or asked to take a pay cut after year two, if we want to keep a guy who has been average but we get into cap trouble, we let HOWIE do his contract gymnastics and renegotiate to free up money… I haven’t looked at the details of Chase deal yet, but the first two years are all im concerned with.

Seems a little odd to me, not really sure what back up value is these days. Have to imagine it is more when SB is the starter. Do recall the Ravens paying Bulger over 6 mil a year a few years back. They don’t call it the best job in sports for nothing.
The Chiefs paid him some rather high salaries to be the backup there as well. Not a clue if he actually deserves it or not.
Deal does seem awfully rich. $12 fully guaranteed is a lot, though a fair bit of that is probably a signing bonus prorated out for a while. Bradford is basically on a one-year deal so I can see having Daniel as insurance for next year so that we aren’t desperate to keep Sam, but the numbers still seem really high. Need to see the full structure but I’m rather surprised at that price.
We will save 3.5 to 4.5 million on the cap if we get rid of Sanchez (if we trade it’s 4.5, and if we cut and there is offset language and he signs elsewhere for over $1 million it’s also 4.5), so that could cover this year at least. But there must be some pretty hefty numbers later on — maybe the third year salary is starter-level so we’d have to release by then if he’s not starting. Might even be the case for 2017 — we might have to choose between Daniel and Bradford (or neither).

However you need to add 2 years of draft picks ~8mil, and Cox’s 2017 Tag value at ~14mil… and you are running out of space FAST.

Safety counts $2.5M this year. So total contract is misleading. It’s a good question. How much actual cap space is there left this year. Good to know b/c Cox’s cap figure will probably be at least $10M, though part of that is offset by his current cap hit (only need to pay difference). That gives an idea of how much of this year’s cap space we have to play with. Despite however contracts are massaged in later years, you still need a few million per player for this year.

Clearly the Giants are chasing the spectre of their last 2 SB wins, where their DL was the MVP. If I am not wrong, they will be adding more to that DL in the draft. Vernon’s contract is a gamble, but if NY wins a playoff game next season, it will have been deemed worth it, I think.

Way too much freaking out going on in Eagles land about the Chase Daniel contract. Yes, it’s up to $36M but the base is $21M. The rest is likely incentives based on starting, performance as a starter, and reaching the playoffs/SB.
The deal reportedly has $12M guaranteed. On a 3-year deal, it is very likely that the guaranteed money is the SB, 1st year salary and either the entire 2nd year salary or part of it. That means that the other $9M is most likely the 2018 salary and unguaranteed. If he is not a starter by that time, he is likely off the roster and that won’t be paid.
So, the deal really reduces to a 2-year, $12M deal. We don’t have the exact details yet but I’d expect that the 1st year has a modest salary and cap hit($3-4M) with the 2nd year having a more significant cap hit to reflect the fact that his status could either be that of a starter or backup. If he was the backup that would mean they kept Bradford next year. If they keep Bradford, they’d almost certainly extend him to reduce his scheduled $23.5M cap charge. Thus the combined cap hit from Bradford and Daniel in 2017 would be manageable. Then Daniel would likely move on in 2018.

Ok here is my calmed down read on the Daniel contract situation.
Think of the contract as a 2 year $12mil year deal with a team option for 2018 at $9mil. There are extensive bonuses built in if he starts and does well but the reality is that it is a 2 year $12mil deal.
That is a ~33% increase over the Sanchez back up deal in 2015, which in the context of this market and cap rises is expensive but not crazy.
Still seems a LOT of resources to be invested at the QB position in 2016, and potentially in 2017 if Bradford plays well were we will have handed out $48mil in 2 years to QB’s (plus 3rd QB whoever that is).
This seems to be more about injury insurance for Sam.
$6 million is a lot to pay a backup QB. That’s money they could have given to Lamar Miller or Jeff Allen. I don’t think it’s an injury issue. I think Pederson regards Daniels has a chance to be a decent starting QB in the NFL.

If positions and need factor into the equation it will be to chose between two of whatever top tier prospects are left on the board at 8… Value, Needs, that crap only matters to break a tie.. What we should be Concerned with is an Honest Evaluation and drafting whoever the hell is the the best player available, whether he is a QB, LT, CB, RB, G, doesn’t even matter.. We NEED more High End talent, more Fletcher Cox type game breakers, and you won’t be in position to be able to chose whatever position you think you want and still get a top tier talent..

From what I’ve read, he’s big bodied (340lbs), durable, and above average.
As far as I can tell. Very good player, probably top 10 OG in the league. Had a down year in 15′ and wasn’t that top 10 OG, but also struggles with injures and played for a horrific Texans offense. Expecting him to bounce back big time, but he is probably at least above average.
Still a very big contract, but the dude is young and freaking huge, which may help Kelce.

I’m honestly not sure, I’m the furthest from a Texans expert. I just recall reading or hearing during games, that Brooks battled and injury this season but played hurt, which very likely hampered his performance.
No doubt about a down year, compared to previously, but understandable if he was no 100%. Credit for being a warrior and playing in pain though. Celek is proud.

Just curious why you feel Bosa is a character issue. Because he was suspended for their 1st game last year? It was supposed to be academics related, and otherwise he seems to have been a decent fella. I am an OSU alum, and follow them fairly closely. I personally think Apple is a little more fluid, and obviously has better size. Roby is more physical and a better tackler. Apple seems to be more consistent play to play, where Roby seems to think he can get by on his athleticism and sometimes lacks concentration. Always felt Roby was a bit overrated in college.
I didn’t even want Treadwell when we were at 13, Elliot is really only a tradeback option but I’d rather not I like our options, Bosa is an interesting player but I prefer Jack
As someone who loves draft season it is A LOT more fun to be at 8 than 13, 8-10 blue chippers in the draft and we are getting one of them
My only concern is that the guys at 8 are probably going to be Zeke, Buckner, Stanley and Hargreaves. (think Lawson/Dodd and the DT’s are all next tier prospects). Buckner is great but not a scheme fit, Don’t want a RB at 8 really, Hargreaves is a high risk evaluation and i do not know if the team will love him, and Stanley i just do not love… especially considering he probably rides the pine in 2016, and i personally prefer a more athletic raw talent later who we can develop with less cost and compariable upside.
Gives us a lot of leeway to trade back too.

Yes an No..we would have much more FLEXABILITY to draft valuable positions and address needs at #13… At #8 we will get a top Tier prospect, but there is only like 7-10 Of those true blue choppers, so at #8,’we won’t be able to address needs, or positional value, we will be chosing between the one , two, or three elite prospects left on the board….. Where as at 13 we would be looking at second tier guys, but probably have more options left on the board to be more picky about needs or positional value..

Carroll has no ball skills. Am I the only one who remembers how bad he played before getting injured? He seemed to fit Chip’s prototype as a great practice player.
Cost is factored into my wants,, I think he is an ascending player who is still improving, good ST contributor who can play outside, nickel and dime, high Charechter, work ethic, I don’t scoff at that…. I want Nolan on the team, I don’t Neccessarily know that I want him as our starting outside corner for the next 3 years… nolan, Thurmond, even Boykin, love to get one of these CBs, promise them nothing, add depth, compete and let the,chips fall where they may
I see where you’re coming from except he wants starter money and at 29, I’m not sure he is ascending. Poor balls skills spell the death of a CB. Doesn’t matter how hard he tries and what physical skill he has if he can’t turn his head and locate the ball in the air.
I thought he was pretty good, given that Maxwell was playing on the other side.
He actually played pretty good. Wasn’t the best, but he was playing better then Maxwell before he went down. He is simply a solid #2 CB. Lack of a pass rush hurt him as well.
He started the season great and really regressed before his injury. I would say he is a solid nickel, not starter.
I don’t like him in the nickel. Would get beat by smaller quicker WR. He is meant for larger WR. I think he would have been better if he was actually allowed to press more last year instead of playing 10 yards off. God, that drove me crazy. Acquire large press CBs, repeatedly speak of how they are going to press, only to play off way too many times.
Very happy with FA as well. Would like a depth player signed for OL and LB. What would be the icing on the cake for me would be Carroll like you said. Only if the price is right however, and he seems to be demanding too much.

That’s been Howie’s M.O. for the 3 seasons he’s been in charge (at least according to Lurie). 2012 – DeMeco Ryans, 2013 – Arrelious Benn, 2014 – Darren Sproles. All within a week or so of the start of free agency.

I think before you start making comments like that you might want to do some research on the contract, and see how the contract is really set up for a QB competition. Daniels and his agent clearly beleive there may truly be a competition and rightfully so. It looks even more like that when you realize Bradford 2 year deal is essentially a 1 year deal if the Birds wanted to go that way. Pederson said from the start he is very high on Daniels, and his words are clearly more then just fluff.
Daniels is better then what his numbers would indicate.

Last offseason I said I think Mathews would take over Murray job, as did others. People said that was nonsense simply because of Murrays 2014 season, and he was labeled as the starter going into the season. Look what happened. Never thought Murray would be that bad though.
I’m not saying Daniels is the answer, I think Bradford is better and will remain the starter, but I do not think it is as garrunteed as you think.

He is bigger, taller, and faster then Mathews albeit older. Can thrive in the correct offense, although I don’t think the new Eagles offense is the one that suits him having success in.

With Tennessee’s 4th rounder, it won’t take much for Howie to trade into the 3rd. That would leave the Eagles with 3 3rd round picks. Those picks could really add some depth/starting material to the team for years to come.

Yeah . I think it’s a clear overpay for a guy who physically and a very small sample has been less than impressive. Talking heads including Jaworski and Didinger haven’t been very glowing in their description of Daniel.
Maybe it’s Roseman throwing a bone to Pederson. McManus was on this afternoon and he said he thought Schwartz has had a very active role in recommending player personnel directly to Roseman to fit his system which Roseman largely acted upon.
I have to wonder to what extent that is true along with how that makes Pederson feel. I thought this was going to be the Rosemsn show including him determing the final 53 man roster.
It gives me a kittel hope that Rosemsn has learned a bit but also creates some real possible tension moving ahead forward if Schwartz is perceived to have more player input than the head coach.
Roseman moved a lot more decisively and aggressively than anyone remotely predicted including on here.
In net I like the moves including improving a bit on the draft positions in the first round but this team still feels like they are spinning their wheels a bit too. Still see this as a 7-8 win team right now until I’ll give Rosemsn credit for remodeling this roster without sacrificing for the future.
The Eagles should be competitive next year (.500 with a game plus or minus) as long as Bradford stays healthy.
But besides Brooks and McLeod, the others had connections to Schwartz & Pederson. Now the trades were very surprising.
I’m not a big howie fan but he was pretty impressive this week. Moved what everyone thought were bad players on bad contracts and got improved draft stock in each case (even if only slight improvements). He got Sammy B signed to a very reasonable deal. He picked up a guard, he also got some decent players for Jim Schwartz. Chase Daniel is a head scratcher but it’s clear to me there’s more deference to what coaches want, which i think is a good thing – to an extent.
