This has been one long, miserable week. My day job has been brutal (getting home at 9pm) and that’s killed my writing schedule. Dealing with the Dallas loss was frustrating. Doug Pederson’s PC’s didn’t help matters (the screen pass was a good call?). Then we had the Josh Huff arrest and release.
Ugh.
Thank god it is Sunday and we can move on. The Eagles take on the Giants today in a big NFC East showdown. A win would put the Eagles at 5-3 at midseason. All in all, I’d be just fine with that. The blown leads still hurt, but you can’t obsess on that. 5-3 would put the Eagles into 2nd place in the division and would in good playoff position.
The Eagles have won 4 in a row against the Giants. Some circumstances have changed for both teams, but the bottom line is that the Eagles won those games because they controlled the line of scrimmage. The Giants are better on the LOS this year, but I still give the Eagles an advantage there. Bennie Logan and Taylor Hart are out and that does hurt, but the the Giants struggle to run the ball so that takes some of the sting out of being thin at DT.
It will be crucial to see if Halapoulivaati Vaitai can hold his own in pass pro. Olivier Vernon and JPP are quick, athletic DEs. They aren’t getting sacks right now, but that can change quickly. Big V has played substantially better each week. You can now see what the coaches were thinking when they gave him the RT job. This will be a big test for him.
If Vaitai and the OL can give Carson Wentz time, he should be able to move the ball. Will anything change with the loss of Josh Huff? Bryce Treggs should take his spot as the #4 WR. That could lead to an extra downfield throw or two. We have all wanted to see that. Even if the passes are incomplete, there is value in stretching the defense to open up the underneath stuff.
The Eagles need to get after Eli, which they normally do.

Don’t count on sacks and INTs. Eli is the master of throwing the ball away at the last moment. If the Eagles are playing good D, we’ll likely see a lot of incompletions. You can bet there will be some borderline intentional grounding moments that will have me going nuts. Eli is the king of that.
I don’t care if this a shootout or defensive struggle. I don’t care if the Eagles are flawless or play ugly. This team just needs to make sure they come away with a win. They need to win a division game and get to 5-3.

I’m not quite as down as you are but I do agree that beating the Giants today is a poor consolation prize for choking against the Cowboys in Dallas last week. Really really tough loss.

If I am going to give credit though, I do like the fact that given you go for it the first time, you do the same thing the second time. It at least suggests the moves are not emotion based, but I honk the first one was a bad decision. The second one, I can debate either way.
Didn’t care for the call on the first one, but that could have been a defense/play the Eagles hadn’t seen the Giants employ so far during the season. Coaches LOVE having an extra week to scheme up new wrinkles to break tendencies. I think that’s what happened with the Wentz keepers today.
The second play was just good defense. Most of the time Sproles can get the first down. Didn’t happen today.

Definitely Wentz’s worst half of football. Was ugly to watch.
Out of his comfort zone.
On the plus side, a few mistakes seem like dumb rookie mistakes which are ok…. doesn’t help that he looked like he had the mental part of the game down early in the season… but ok. The bad part is missing some easy throws.
The bad part might be that he really is a natural short-baller, and these long balls is just how it’s going to be. Hope not.

True, but the schedule and the NFC East is much harder than I thought it would be, so I take that into account.
