A True Home Run

We love to pick apart bad free agent signings and poor draft picks. Sometimes we forget to focus on the moves that go right, like the signing of FS Malcolm Jenkins.

https://twitter.com/NFLPA/status/827284178697728001

That’s quite the honor for Jenkins.

He is one of those rare players that is terrific on and off the field. It is easy to get caught up in the players who struggle on the field or who can’t stay out of trouble off it, but Jenkins deserves every bit of praise he gets. I think Jenkins understands that being an NFL player does carry responsibility with it and he handles that role just brilliantly.

One of the good guys…

PE.com has the story on Jenkins winning the award.

This would not be a surprising development.

As I mentioned recently, Stills makes sense for the Eagles.

Stills is also interesting. He showed promise for the Saints, but they traded him to Miami a couple of years ago. You always wonder why a team would trade away a talented, cheap young player. Stills has some size at 6-1, 194. He is a good deep threat, averaging 17 yards per catch for his career. He had a nightmare drop in the season opener (wide open for long TD), but generally seemed to have good hands. He isn’t as good as Britt, but is younger. Stills won’t turn 25 until April. Howie Roseman talked of wanting to add young players that could grow with Carson Wentz.

This is a fair point by Les. But…Miami has a young star in Jarvis Landry and spent a Top 10 pick on Devante Parker so they might have to let Stills go. Landry will be getting a big deal soon and Parker is a guy they want to become a bigger part of the offense. I think there is a real chance that Stills does hit the market.

Stills is not a great player. He would not instantly solve the Eagles WR issues. He could be part of a good group. If you had him and Jordan Matthews plus a draft pick and possibly another free agent, you could have a good group of WRs. I hope the Eagles can find an elite talent, but that’s not always possible. Adding someone like Stills would be a positive move and a step in the right direction.

We’ll know more in a month.

  17. 17 D3FB said at 10:10 PM on February 3rd, 2017:

Nah. They need to dump money. Maybe Ags in a my trash for your junk or Kendricks for a late pick and then give them that late pick for Anthony.

  18. 18 Sb2bowl said at 10:31 AM on February 6th, 2017:

How’d Anthony fall out of favor down there? I loved the guy in the draft- weird to see him not translate (but we can relate, as we’ve got AGS).

Saints do some weird stuff, hopefully we can pry Cooks from their Cajun hands

  19. 19 D3FB said at 7:48 AM on February 7th, 2017:

Payton came out in December and said Anthony was having trouble diagnosing. I had a 3rd on him coming out of Clemson. He’s a physical talent, but Clemson used him as a see ball get ball stat stuffer, and blitzed him on obvious passing downs. That seemed odd to me (because given his athleticism he shouldn’t have had issues in coverage). Seems he’s just kind of stupid. That’s why if we move Kendricks and Anthony can be had for peanuts, it’s a smart move to replace him with a similar player who is younger, cheaper, and physically bigger, and who knows maybe the light comes on.

  20. 20 Sb2bowl said at 9:58 AM on February 7th, 2017:

Do you think that would fit with Schwartz? Wasn’t he on record saying Alonso was dumber than a box of rocks- see ball, get ball type player? Do you think that it would work in our scheme? Seems like we need thumpers, but smart players as well.

This really goes to show how intelligent (at least, football wise) you need to be to play and excel in the NFL. Guys have all of the physical talent in the world, but they can’t think their way out of a wet paper bag.

  21. 21 D3FB said at 10:06 AM on February 7th, 2017:

I think in the Kendricks role he would be fine. And I haven’t heard details but there’s enough out there that Kiko is dumber than the person who is dumber than a box of rocks.

So, lots of talk about how this draft line up with our needs, although we have need sort of eerywhere. I see it though. With a little luck we could go BPA all the way and still adress team needs from the top to the bottom:

1: WR. There are two really good ones in this draft, one might fall to us at 14 and give us that no. 1 the offense sorely needs.
2: CB. very deep draft with a good possibiity of a 1st roundish talent being there in the second. Our next-highest need, we could get a no. 1. CB here.
3: RB. Good RB’s can often be found in the third, and this year there could very possibly be a great one available to us and we get a 3-down weapon here.
4: DT/WR/CB. As it has been reported, this draft has great depth on these three positions. With a little luck there could be a good starter for us at one of them here in the fourth.
5: OG. Moving Seumalo to center creates an immediate need at left guard. LG/DT. Left guard is often talked about as the easiest position to find a capable starter on the O-line, and we have drafted starters for the interior in the fifth or later before (like Kelce). Its really not at all impossible that there will be a capable starter available for us here.

I guess everything outside the fifth are just depth/developmental guys unless you get lucky so I’ll stop here. But you could make the case that we have chances of finding eventual starters or good role players at RB, DT, OL and slot WR here too.

My point is, I sort of eye the possibility of the draft turning out like the above considering the depth and talent available where we draft, and I have these fantasies that we will be able to draft five or six impact starters at the biggest positions of need in this one go around if everything works out perfectly.

Probably, something completely different will happen and they will take a TE in the first who will need a year or two to learn blocking at the pro level and then pick up an o-tackle in a weak class in the second. God, lets hope not..

This draft just shows how important that regained 1st round pick was. I still do the Wentz trade 10/10 but that chance to get a top tier talent at CB/WR/DE can matters 2-3 years down the road

  29. 29 Ankerstjernen said at 4:33 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

Absolutely. When it is all said and done and Wentz is a top6 QB in this league, I think the trading up which Howie worked out in several steps over the course of many weeks, will be looked back upon as one of the greatest feats of GM’ing in many years. This is not like the Cowboys lucking into Dak in the 5th or the Redskins trading three entire drafts to get up and pick RGIII, this was subtle, deliberate, aggressive and brilliant work to get the best QB talent to come out in several years (we will see) while preserving the essential draft picks to build the team up.

  30. 30 A Roy said at 12:34 PM on February 3rd, 2017:

I agree, Howie. I will say that this wasn’t all part of a master plan. It was taking advantage of the situation several times and having things work out. Sorta like making a $10 Yo bet, hitting it and letting it ride twice more.

  31. 31 Ankerstjernen said at 4:28 AM on February 6th, 2017:

I actually disagree. We can’t knwo for sure of course, but everythign bout that draft and how they got to Wentz appear to tell the story of a franchise that very early decided to go and get the best QB in the draft by any and all means nessecary. And then did just that, without mortgaging the future.

  32. 32 A Roy said at 6:23 AM on February 6th, 2017:

But the future was mortgaged. Without Minnesota’s bad luck, Bradford’s salary would’ve meant losing players we couldn’t afford to keep and not signing free agents. And we wouldn’t have a first this year. This was the key step. And it was luck. It was luck Miami was willing to trade or we couldn’t have moved from #13 to #8 and dump unproductive salary. The only thing done by design was the trade to #2, and we were lucky that Wentz wasn’t selected 1st. I’m not saying Howie didn’t do a great job. He did. I’m just saying yo, yo, yo.

  33. 33 Ankerstjernen said at 9:09 AM on February 6th, 2017:

I have no idea what you mean, honeslyt. It wasnt luck that Miami traded with us, Howie negotiated that deal with the purpose of making the trade. Its not like they flipped a coin and then signed the papers. And it sure as hell wasnt luck that Wentz was there, you can be damn sure they knew for certain that the Rams were taking Goff. (Its been reported widely after the draft.) Minnesotas bad luck was of coruse a fluke, but ist pretty easy to argue that Howie set the teams QB structure up with the specific purpose of being able to trade Bradford after 2016. They signed him for two years, and then spent all that capital on Wentz and Chase anyway, clearly this was the plan. Maybe he saw the possibility to trade with Elway, maybe he really wanted Bradford to be the mentor this year. Regardless, ending up with more than one capable QB on your team the way that they did had nothing to do with luck and everythign to do with the way they attacked the position in the offseason. The fact that he got the Viking to pay a 1st for him is not luck either, unless you think they flipped a coin for that trade as well.

  34. 34 A Roy said at 9:19 AM on February 6th, 2017:

Well, say you’re in a bar and decide to hit on a young lady. As it turns out, she broke up with her boyfriend this week and is looking for a self-affirming one night stand. You would call that planning. I would call it luck.

  35. 35 Ankerstjernen said at 9:41 AM on February 6th, 2017:

Well, say you see this sexy gal that you like, you take the same classes as her, find ways to go to her workplace, interview all of her friends, learn about her habits and preferences and where you can find her in her spare time, basically you stalk the shit out of her like a creep with an obsession, and then one night you go to the bar and approach her, and you know exactly what to say and you end up getting lucky.

To be clear I don’t recommend this approach for dating! But its a pretty handy way to go about recruiting good QB’s.

I there are 13 worth taking in picks 1 through 13.

  44. 44 Media Mike said at 5:31 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

As I’ve been doing the simulated drafts, I’ve been looking at not being position specific at who I take first and then backfilling needs (we have a ton of them) with who really looks like they fell to that spot. I’m really not married to any specific position at 14 (but stupidly 15th according to these crooked simulators), but not opposed to trading down as far as 19.

    So on that note.

Round 1 Pick 19 (T.B.): Teez Tabor, CB, Florida (A)
Round 2 Pick 11: Dan Feeney, OG, Indiana (A)
Round 2 Pick 18 (T.B.): Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina (B+)
Round 4 Pick 12: Marlon Mack, RB, South Florida (A)
Round 4 Pick 33: Jarron Jones, DT, Notre Dame (A)
Round 5 Pick 11: Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas (A-)
    Round 6 Pick 10: Jalen Reeves-Maybin, OLB, Tennessee (B-)
Round 7 Pick 12: Jeremy Cutrer, CB, Middle Tennessee (B+)

  45. 45 Ankerstjernen said at 8:54 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

yes, I am all for BPA entirely as well, considering the holes we have on the roster and the fact that we are probable at least two off seasons away from being competitive. A lot can change in two years, so it makes no sense to be guided by needs. My point was merely that we have some holes that we have positions where we have been struggling for a long time now (corner, OL, WR) and even a strict BPA approach could end up solving some of our biggest problems pretty much right this year. That is exciting stuff!

  46. 46 Sb2bowl said at 11:25 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

Out of most of your simulations- this one is one of the better ones I’ve seen. I like the need/talent aspect that fell this way, as well as depth and a possible 2-3 starters almost immediately. The depth aspect is nice as well; we will need a TE, could probably use a CB earlier than 7, but you managed to get 2 pass rushers (potential DE’s) and a DL that we’ll need.

  47. 47 Media Mike said at 7:14 AM on February 4th, 2017:

They’re all luck and randomness to be honest. I just happened to get extremely lucky here.

  48. 48 Sb2bowl said at 10:30 AM on February 6th, 2017:

I hear that- I run simulations (maybe a little too much) when I have free time; I’ll post some of my earlier stuff, compared to later. It’ll be interesting to track and see how things change as evaluations and the off season progresses.

At this point, I like the defensive depth of this draft much more than I like the offensive depth. So far, it seems like grabbing offensive fire-power early is the way to go and then back load with the other side of the ball. That’ll change exactly 764,019 times between now and the draft.

  49. 49 anon said at 10:16 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

Would the Eagles consider passing on the opportunity to draft a CB with pick 14/15 because the Schwartz defense doesn’t require top shelf CB talent?

Then follow the theory you’re proposing here to attempt to pick up 2 CBs in round 2/3?

  51. 51 Forthebirds said at 11:22 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

Love your optimism, but realistically if we got three players who could help out immediately and one or two who developed into capable starters in years 2-3, it would be one of the greatest eagles drafts ever. I hope Douglas can have a real impact on this draft because our track record sucks.

It’s Feb talk but I’ll throw in my .02cents and ask for change. Maybe T-Law’s excitement for Jenkins is clouding his thinking. Maybe 1 too PBR. Saints trade a young wr – Red flag. “generally seemed” – Red flag. “Isn’t as good as” — red flag. “not a great player” – red flag. “not solve but be part of a group”. Hmm, 42 catches — Aggie – 36 catches. DGB – 36 catches. Eagles already have a couple of under performing WR’s. Why get one to replace one? I’d rather keep Aggie. 3 teams before your 24? Red Flag. If Miami was impressed with him, they’d find a way to sign him. Eagles clearly have issues with their WR’s. If they want to rebuild in that area – you have to sign better talent. My preference — follow Oakland’s model. Draft franchise QB – check. Next Draft weapons. Wentz still needs time to develop. (man work must be slow if I’m typing this much about a rumor :))

  68. 68 ChoTime said at 9:12 AM on February 3rd, 2017:

The Eagles are taking lots of swings at “talented,” loser receivers. The reality is the batting average is going to be low. But when you finally connect, it’s worth it. I think it’s a good strategy. It’s not like drafted players pan out more than free agents (they’re just cheaper).

I’m anxious to see how pocic and elfein grade it. I think most iggles fans want CB and WR to be the iggles top 2 to 3 picks. But I really think Oline needs to be infused with good young talent. I feel like if wentz has better Oline play he can elevate the personnel around him. A better run game also helps out Mr wentz. I would like us to grab one of the top interior line men in this draft. It would be amazing to see this team establish an identity in the trenches. Tough and nasty like the good old days.

Everyone acts as if we have not added any young players to the OL. We drafted 2 promising rookies last year. 1 should start and 1 should be the top bench guy. We also took a flyer on dillion gordon. I’m interested to see what a year of OL coaching has done for him.

I’d prefer a good LG in free agency and focus elsewhere in the draft. Ronald Leary is near the top of my wishlist.

  86. 86 Ark87 said at 12:10 PM on February 3rd, 2017:

At the same time, Wentz mitigated a lot of poor O-line play by extending plays, but our receivers very rarely were able to capitalize on the time Wentz bought. I like O-line, I want to keep the franchise safe, but that offense will be stuck in neutral until he gets weapons, those plays he extends are supposed to be back-breakers, but our guys just don’t get open. I don’t think investing in the O-line will help the offense with the cupboards this empty. So hopefully we can help both with the comnination of draft and FA

That’s a tough call, GE. I loved them both, but for entirely different reasons.

Vick, for all that he was- was polarizing. I was at the preseason game when we signed him- couldn’t believe it. He didn’t disappoint, but it was a disappointment that we didn’t get to advance in the post season that year.

McNabb, to me- best QB we’ve had in this franchise. For all of his faults, quirks, worm burners– dude was a baller. TO, and then his injuries derailed a potential HOF career. Sad times for sure, but we can’t re-write history.

I hope the fan base doesn’t make the same mistake with Wentz. Kid seems to have a good head on his shoulders, but I wonder what he will be like in 10 years (if he reaches that point). 153. 153 Fufina said at 8:10 AM on February 4th, 2017:

Not sure why people think DeSean is going to be so expensive. Generally the NFL pays for future production, and we know exactly what DeSean is at this point – 900ish yards, 4-5 TD’s, 50-60 receptions. There is no upside, you buy what produces.

People like Stills and Pryor have upside and some team is going to value them for what they could produce, rather than what they will produce. Stills is probably going to cost more or the same as DeSean, be a worse player with no history of his production.

Stills is not a good enough player to be a long term solution for the Eagles – he is a 2-3 year stop gap while we draft and develop better players, exactly the same as Desean.. People used to get frustrated with DeSean disappearing but Stills is a ghost in comparison. Stills in 2016 had 4 games with under 20 yards, and 8 under 42. Stills is not a quick athlete, he is a fast one, put a CB who can match him stride for stride in man and you can cover him 1v1 and make him disappear, he lacks the sudden change of direction/speed to threaten a CB the way DeSean can covered 1v1.

Stills does not change coverage or demand a double team – he can produce if mismatched on a slower CB on go routes, and can pick up some shorter catches in zone. Stills is a no.3 WR who because when mismatched can make 4-5 huge plays a year that balloon his stats and make him get on highlight shows, but he doesn’t effect games, and will get paid like a guy who does.

  154. 154 Media Mike said at 8:19 AM on February 4th, 2017:

DeSean is coming off of a 3 year / $24 million deal that saw him produce less than what he did here.

I’d hope he’d be able to be signed for 2 years / $12 to $14 million here.
