DE Derek Barnett is Your Newest Eagle
Posted: April 27th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 400 Comments »The pick is in and Derek Barnett is your newest Eagle.
Barnett is 6-3, 259 and a high productive pass rusher. If not already, you’ll soon be sick of hearing the stat that Barnett broke Reggie White’s sack record at Tennessee. Barnett had a great college career and is absolutely worthy of a mid-1st round pick. This isn’t a reach or crazy pick in any sense.
Why add a DE here?
If you want to build a title team, you need a QB and guys who can get to the QB. The Eagles added Carson Wentz last year and wanted to add a pass rusher this year. Yes, the Eagles do have Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry and Chris Long, but none of them are young. Barnett won’t turn 21 until June so the Eagles just got better and much younger up front.
Eagles had just 14 sacks in last 10 games last year, second-fewest in NFL during that span.
— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) April 28, 2017
The team did pass on some big names. Jonathan Allen is a Top 5 talent. He has arthritic shoulders and that has caused teams to pass on him to this point. The Eagles obviously felt it wasn’t smart to take a chance n him. That was purely a medical decision.
Malik Hooker has issues as a tackler and that makes him an awkward fit for the Wide-9. That look puts a lot of pressure on DBs to be good run defenders. That’s an area where Hooker can struggle.
Reuben Foster has shoulder and character issues. We’ve discussed Dalvin Cook to death.
Why not move back? It takes 2 to tango. My guess is that teams weren’t looking to move up so the Eagles stayed put and added a player they were very high on.
The Eagles are a better team than they were this morning.
_
Crap Allen to WAS
They have been really good at just sticking to their boards and taking best player. However they do seem more willing to take risks on injured players so the pick makes sense.
Ugh we have to root against him now…
The notion that Barnett has no rush moves is silly. I’m watching the Florida game now and in just over 3 minutes I have seen the speed rush to the outside, a bull rush and and outside/in move. Does he need more technique and polish? Sure but he’s only 20.
I don’t think people are worried about his technique and moves. It’s his limited athletic ability. The top rushers in this league are just more athletic than Barnett is. That isn’t likely to be improved
Literally 0 explosion.
Watch the clip and timestamp that I posted above. I bet Lattimore will have 0 explosion when his hammies snap.
Lol.
I don’t like this “lets stay safe” mentality. Hooker’s tackling issue isn’t that bad. Watkins had tackling issues too but he got better.
He did? Our Watkins? I must be confused.
He went from Asante to regular DB bad this year
He went from a mile marker to a turnstile. That’s progress right?
Shout out to Fred Barnett
https://draftbreakdown.com/video/derek-barnett-vs-florida-2016/ Go to 4:21 and get a look at what this guy can do in a wide 9 These are SEC tackles we are talking about.
That bend
i think you mean “dat bend doe”
Its crazy how lov he can go sometimes.
So sexy. Said it weeks ago. Lemme see if I can find my comment
meteorologist cloisterwater 25 days ago
I love Barnett as well. He has a stiffness/ sometimes-awkwardness to him, but you see teams constantly running away from him and the only time they run at him is a reverse or play action to keep him honest. Fantastic hand use and strength. Can time the snap well sometimes. It almost feels like he is saving energy for crucial 3rd downs because he knows teams are running away from him and rolling the QB away etc: he does flash a surprising burst in big situations.
I don’t see these things going away at the next level.
Night gentlemen. Go Eagles!
But what if we trade back into the first?!
Wake me.
I knew you weren’t really gone.
One thing that really sticks out to me: 28 of 32 career sacks came against SEC competition.
http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/sec/leaders/sacks-player-career.html
Doesn’t mean much to be honest.
That’s not what we are saying. We are praising his production against SEC schools, not comparing him to other SEC players
Nope. This is exactly the Jordan Matthews is the all time SEC receiving leader BS all over again.
…so….you’re saying you aren’t a fan of the pick?
Yes.
Amari Cooper is second all time receiving in the SEC by 300 yards so he shouldn’t be good either then?
One of them wasn’t fed screen passes his entire college career. So your argument is as terrible as Sammie Coates’s hands.
Barnett wasn’t getting fed screen passes though, so not sure the argument is that terrible.
Jordan Matthews wasn’t a bad pick
And another CB is off the board. Kinda glad that he’s gone though.
adoree jackson gone. A lot of good CBs left.
Surprised he went so high.
FWIW, Howie just said Barnett had the flu at the combine and a hamstring injury at his pro day.
Joe Douglas going to bat for the pick, trust the tape.
Amazing that he had two very distinct ailments and ran essentially an identical time /sarcasm/
My thought exactly…sounds like he just ran shitty times and made excuses
Or he was telling the truth?
Its very well known he had the flu at the combine.
I mean if the dude isn’t know to be a pathological liar or something, I’m just going to go ahead and believe him.
+ it’s the reason Joe Douglas was hired.
Yes, because a cold and an injury to your legs would typically result in identical times
Cold and flu are 2 very different things.
Not as different as the flu and a hamstring injury when it comes to measure someone’s speed
It’s weird…he looks slow on tape too…I dunno…maybe he’s just slow
No he had a hang nail that day
He’s no Mike Mamula
Personally, I care more about film and production than I do combine. So I’m sold.
but hey, he’s Philly tough and has a clean medical….wait a minute
Yeah, I’m sure the team barely looked into it before drafting him. They know it’s a bad pick, just want to sandbag the fans. /sarcasm/
Switching to whiskey. Carry on.
I support this
I think the guy’s a beast and I’m thrilled with it.
Tommy killing me with the last paragraph here. Makes it sound like we settled.
Not sure that’s actually the case, just the phrasing in that paragraph made it seem Tommy isn’t super high on this pick.
I should point out, Tommy had Barnett mocked to the Eagles at scoutsnotebook, so I’m guessing he actually likes the pick enough, just the phrasing there didn’t reflect that well.
Graham, Cox, Jernigan, Barnett gonna be so sexy destroying offensive lines in the run AND pass games next year
Nice forecast.
I said it weeks ago. (wavered a few times between then and now but who’s counting)
WR has been upgraded in free agency, DL upgraded via trade and draft.
The team is already better today then when they ended the season.
I cant get excited until we address the CBs
I was excited the moment McKelvin was released. I almost creamed my pants when Carroll signed with the Cowboys.
Until you see Mills outside Week 1 and you realize ‘oh shit’
Oh, I know Mills is slow. But McKelvin and Carroll were plain turruble.
Right, and right now we pretty much only have guys on the roster who sat on the bench in favor of McKelvin and Carroll.
Worse at CB so far. Couple of draft picks could change that though
If the corners can cover for at least 2 seconds 🙂
Watching that highlight tape I’m struck by how low he gets and how he bends to prevent blockers from getting their hands on him. That’s an elite skill for a pass rusher to have.
Still not blown away by the pick but not upset by it either. He looks like a 1st round player to me.
His ability to bend is truly top notch…I”ll give him that. I just don’t see the explosion to beat NFL LTs in his first 3 steps. Being lined up out in the wide 9 is only a benefit if the DE has the speed to take advantage. If you’re plodding around the LT from 3 yards outside his shoulder you’re just giving the LT and thus the QB more time to keep you away from getting a sack.
Add in his midget T-Rex arms and I don’t see him translating to the NFL. Hope I’m wrong.
Tyron Smith is going to toy with him
BG is one of the few guys who seems to give Smith fits. Barnett reminds me of BG a lot.
Brandon Graham is significantly faster and quicker than Barnett. Significantly.
Throw in stronger too.
True. Problem is Graham is stronger than a lot of guys. He’s not faster and quicker than many DEs.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/61e9613618897ea9e729aa6d5f2192e4a319589a1d79bcef9ca790bc85d4dbd0.png

BG has a much better 1st step than Barnett. Both his 40 and 10 yard split were .10 seconds faster. That is a big deal.
Grahams had microfracture surgery since then. He definitely slowed down after that and it took him a couple years of having to learn to be a technician to overcome it.
Agreed. So they are comparable atheltes. I would also say that BG gets the most of his ability. Barnett should have a similar ceiling, which isn’t worth the 14th pick. He won’t be a total bust, but he isn’t what we needed. We needed impact at this pick.
I’m going to root for the guy. I hope he proves me wrong. I just don’t see it with this guy. We needed a twitchy or explosive edge rusher. Kind of how you didn’t want Mike Williams because of Alshon, Barnett is very similar to what we already have at DE
Having the most pressures in the league isn’t impact?
He’s good. I love BG, but he’s not a top edge rusher in this league. A good player. I’m really disappointed because I wanted a guy with an elite ceiling. Barnett does not have that. I’m a firm believer that elite players win games. We needed to land one
Who did you like more at the spot? The only guy I felt definitely has elite upside still hasn’t been drafted, and that’s Foster. He’s got more red flags than you can shake a stick at though.
Harris, Foster, Hooker, Conley. I would have been ok with Humphrey even though so have some concerns with him
Hate Harris at 14. I think Miami jumped the gun a bit taking him at 22. Hooker I would have been ok with. Conley . . no way. Not with both his aversion to tackling and the rape accusation. Even if it’s false, it’s too big a risk. Humphrey looks like Nolan Carroll take two to me at this pt. Maybe he figures out how to play the ball . . . he’s young . . . .
I’m hoping the Eagles somehow manage to grab Chidobe Awuzie at this point.
We picked 14 not 5. Expecting an all-pro is weird.
Exactly, the guys with production and elite measurements don’t last to pick 14.
Harris had that ceiling. Hooker and Howard have the ceiling. Humphrey has that ceiling.
Remember when they jokingly started calling pressure’s ‘Mamulas’ 😛
He comps athletically to Bosa. He’s not Von Miller but you don’t have to be all planet athlete to be a very good DE.
Look I said two weeks ago he wouldn’t be my top choice but would be a guy I’d be totally fine with taking and would be easy to get on board with.
So we have to hope that he turns into Ryan Kerrigan?
I’ve said Orakpo but yea Kerrigan works too. He’s going to have to be a guy who wins with a good first step, technique and dogged relentlessness.
Better 3 cone and shuttle than 12.5 sack Markus Golden
And Shane Ray
And Nick Perry
And Dee Ford
Do you think his first step could get better? I don’t think it’s very good right now.
Yes. It’s too short right now. He doesn’t gain enough ground.
Go to 1:19 and put it at .25 speed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=79&v=1zwKJuOpQ4Q
Yea, he won’t get a finger on Dak. Watch his highlights he’s running around overmatched tackles that look like they’ve got their feet in cement. He don’t have the speed to do that to Tyron Smith.
Well he’s not going to go against the LT..hopefully.
Graham played almost exclusively LDE last year.
You’re not making this better.
So we spent the 14th pick for a guy who we don’t feel can complete against NFL LTs?
He will play RDE.
https://twitter.com/EagleSessions/status/793122585370394628
So your saying barnett is going to be worse than Marcus Smith?
Broken clock that’s right twice a day?
Smith is good, he dominates a lot of people. Let’s see in a year or two. And Barnett will set the edge better than anyone else we had last year, if Dak is throwing I’m ok with that. Barnett is 20 and strong, he will get stronger.
I want to yell this from the roof tops. I don’t give a shit about setting the edge right now. We have 3 guys already that can play the run. We don’t have a guy that can consistently get to the QB. That hasn’t changed.
Go ahead and yell, no one in Philly will notice right now. 😉
I think you’re wrong. And against the Cowboys, you should care about stopping the run. Barnett will pressure the hell out of the QB. It’s easy to overanalyze and write off college production. The guy is going to impact the D.
I watched the highlights and saw him beating guys from Alabama and Texas A&M regularly. Those are not schools with cement-footed fat guys playing tackle, they’re both places that churn out 1st round NFL linemen. Watching that tape I don’t see a guy who looks overmatched or plodding. Love the relentlessness and ferocity I see too – didn’t see him getting blocked out of the play or dogging it on run plays at all.
Sorry I wasn’t looking at the LTs jerseys I was looking at their still feet as he went around them. I just didn’t see him do anything in those videos that he’ll be able to do to Tyron Smith or Jason Peters.
Good pass rushers have a way of making blockers look plodding and overmatched.
He wins hand fights consistently, don’t get too caught up in measurables.
Once he gets past the LT he looks like he’s running in quicksand going after the QB. I wonder if half the QBs in the league will be able to run away from him with ease.
If half the quarterbacks in the league are running away from him, it’s a high five pick.
What I mean is, can he finish plays?
I realize people tend to look at the combine numbers and question, but look at the sack numbers he put up . . . in the SEC . . .
Clearly he can finish. No, he’s not the athlete that Myles Garrett or Solomon Thomas is, but he was more productive against tough competition. I’ll take that every day.
If anything, that was his strength in college. I’m a big fan of football players. This guy fits the bill. Some guys just know how to play the game.
I know he was great in college, but people are faster in the pros.
I think he’ll be a good player for us. We really needed to take care of CB before the draft tbh.
Mamula tested as an elite athlete and was a mediocre (at best) NFL player.
Elite testing scores do not mean a guy will excel in the NFL, and mediocre ones don’t mean he won’t (the aforementioned Suggs).
That’s what they said about Graham.
I love the Buc’s offense, on paper anyway
Was hoping for one of the Qbs to be on the board when we were on the clock.
The problem with the pass rush wasn’t that the DL wasn’t good enough, it was that the DBs couldn’t cover long enough to let give our excellent DL time enough to get to the QB. I don’t see this pick moving the dial. Maybe it will turn out to have been a great choice in a few years, but we just made a strength a little stronger, while our huge glaring weakness has yet to be addressed.
Agreed, but I didn’t think there was a corner worth the spot. Shame that Lattimore went a couple picks earlier.
I’m ok with it, those Hammy’s scare me. Frankly I think we would have picked Barnett anyway
There are still corners available. And the DL had room to get better. Really strong rotation. OL and DL are both deep now, which is solid team building strategy.
“The problem with the pass rush wasn’t that the DL wasn’t good enough”
Yeah it was.. Did you see Connor Barwin (and his useless spin move) and Vinny Curry (useless, period) out there? Cox went through a slump for a while. Bennie Logan wasn’t great at all
Yea, CB is certainly a larger need than DE was, but there wasn’t a CB worth taking, and DE while less of a need, was still absolutely a need on the team.
It’s called BPA . . . not biggest need . . . cough cough Marcus Smith :S
Fully agree. That was absolutely my point.
They definitely factored in need
You have to a some. Otherwise I think that OJ Howard was probably the true BPA, but unless they are going to devote themselves to running a two TE set the majority of the time, it’s an absolute waste of a pick.
There wasn’t an offensive player worth the pick and Barnett was right at the top of the players there. Especially if you factor in medical concerns with the Alabama guys.
Also, improved line that gets to the QB quicker means improved secondary since in theory the QB has less time to go through progressions.
No dissing Barwin, true or not.
It’s a really deep draft at CB, much less so at DE. If they want to address both this is the order to do it in.
That’s…. very zen.
Meant “much less so at DE”, corrected.
Graham was pretty much our only pass rush. We had good coverage LBs and safeties, Mills has a chance to develop along with our other young CBs
Teams that traded down did well.
Bolles with the Simba move
Hell of a backstory too I’m pulling for the kid
http://www.sltrib.com/home/4228956-155/utah-football-garett-bolles-picked-himself
I assume you’re referring to the baby.
Looking at who was available, felt they took the right guy. I liked both Allen and Foster from Alabama too, but both have questions thanks to medical and off field issues. Took the best player. What you’re supposed to do 🙂
Man looking at it now, I would have done what it took to trade up for Lattimore.
Probably would have given up a decent amount of picks
Going to be some good CBs later, esp his teammate.
I want Conley so bad..
We’re not taking him.
The asking prices for trading up has been steep so far in this draft. I would have loved Lattimore, but trading up didn’t seem worth the prices we were seeing.
Not sure he’s going to remember that buddy
Derek Barnett for Players Tribune
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/derek-barnett-nfl-draft-cover-letter/
nice
Check out @Espngreeny’s Tweet: https://twitter.com/Espngreeny/status/857775085230403585?s=09
We beat the Browns again! Garrett’s lazy at times. Barnett has a motor. He’s gonna give effort. Someone comped him to Shaq Lawson.
Yes, but will he be better than Allen?
Now we can look forward to the real main event: who will take Corn Elder?
Welp just got back from the rehearsal dinner… Was Derek Barnett on anyone’s radar?? Seems like a good pick too, and makes sense considering how little impact Curry was able to make last year. Infusion of youth and talent at an important position.
Sounds like it was a pretty wild and unexpected first 10 picks, multiple quarterbacks and receivers? Seems like a draft that has defied expectations. John Ross and Corey Davis going so high is crazy!!
Think he was Kempski’s pick in his first mock draft, so he has been on the radar for a while. Lot of people were hoping he was towards that back of that radar
I only just fell in love with Corey Davis and then I lost him. Unrequited…
Tis better to love and lose, than to never have loved at all.
True, my heart’s aching, but at least I wasn’t one of those willing to settle for someone like Barnett.
Was shocked that all three WR I would’ve liked w/the pick went before the top 10 :S
Now that Ross went to the Bengals he’s obviously gonna be a bust 😉
You might be joking but I don’t get it unless they are looking to drop Dalton. Doesn’t seem to have the arm to take advantage of Ross.
Moreso just joking about how my mindset shifts depending on if we get players I like of if other get them
would have been fine with barnett. just got hopes up for lattimore, allen, hooker with the drops
I’m gonna take a guess, most people were thinking we would take Lattimore right before the pick?
He went 11.
ahh my mistake, still trying to get this all sorted out.
was just hoping he’d go a few more spots, out of the available options, was thinking allen
Definitely a wild and fun draft
Tommy mocked him to us. So yes, he was definitely on the radar. Just a couple of bigger names were on the board — so we will see how careers play out.
Idk I’m just feeling really underwhelmed. I also really wanted rivers from y state and this basically means we won’t draft him. Has elite athletic ability which is so important for pass rushers nowadays
the draft worked out well with QB’s etc for us, a few good options and yet the Eagles came thru and picked someone that what seems like 75% of the folks here think is a horrible pick.
So we’ve done well today. See you tomorrow night.
I think if the right corner is there they might try and get up into the late 1st.
just take Conley with our 2nd rounder. I can’t stay up just on the chance they trade up.
Gotta get Mixon with our 2nd
While I love my fellow IggleBlitzers almost none of us know anything about scouting football players. And two of the few who do (Tommy and Tyler) like the pick fine.
Not going to lose sleep over the reaction of fans.
Come on Giants, pick someone with some bust potential, medical concerns maybe? Criminal Allegations? Do it
Evan Engram to the Giants. We don’t really have anyone that can line up with him (yet).
We don’t have anyone that can line up with Beckham or Marshall either.
Interesting that OJ Howard not the first TE chosen.
Howard is with the Bucs
he was went 19
Whoops sorry must have stopped paying attention for a bit
He was taken by the Bucs.
Malcolm Jenkins
Too slow.
Malcolms not an LB. For it to be significant separation Engram will be in McLeods zone already. Malcolms biggest issues in coverage are the jitterbug slots.
I do recall him getting beat in a foot race by some guys in the slot. Don’t remember exactly who though.
Beasly gives him fits. He was solid to very good against just about everyone else.
Lattimore could have done it!
I’m sure Barnett could too.
He can catch a hell of a screen pass as well.
Nah he’ll just drop them like your WR crushes.
Zay Jones drops a lot of passes?
You better hope he does if he goes to a division rival.
You’re damn right I will. I will despise him if he is a Cowboy, Giant, or Skin.
At least annoying Josh Norris had the wrong guy Charles Harris. Crossing broad guy was right about them going DL a long time ago.
At least he’s more reliable than Sean Scott
That dude is such a phony liar. He had Harris going to us and has Barnett 33rd.
I was too but….this draft has been wild, Thought Harris would be our guy (not my favorite), then saw all these people I didn’t expect to be there. Then was surprised again. Kind of a crazy night
Smokescreens man.
I thought OJ Howard was going to be an elite player. It didn’t matter tom me that we had Ertz and Celek. I don’t blame them for not taking Foster.
Eli’s going to throw for 400 against us this year
Nope, Barnett wont let that happen
LOL
With what OL? Good luck fixing their tackle issues in this draft class.
All for 4 yards. That line is still a mess
For a 5-11 team
Conley. Hmm.
Spuds says there was effort to move up and move down during draft
It’s Howie . . . of COURSE he tried to move around 🙂
thank god the cowboys cant get him now
Obi could go there still. UCONN team mates patrolling that back field could be scary.
Obi is not good
Raiders took Gareon Conley so there goes that idea.
Fuuuuuuuuuuck
wooooaaaaa……… there goes Conley.
Stupid Raiders
Damn.
Risky pick for sure, but someone was going to pick him up sooner or later.
Conley on the box … Took 2 weeks too long
Lousy representation by his agent
Aren’t polygraphs inadmissible as evidence anyhow? Lots of ways to cheat them from what I understand.
Only thing it might sway is the court of public opinion.
Even the inventor of the polygraph has denounced them as total garbage.
I hear there is suspicion he was lying about that.
If only there was some way to tell…
If NFL front offices believe in them — even some — that may be enough.
Admissible in very limited circumstances.
Law enforcement and corporations rely on them.
As does CIA
will be interesting to see which player gets to be a bust at 25
I guess now that he’s not an Eagle, some of you can get around the cognitive dissonance with Conley.
Innocent until proven guilty.
I agree in principal. Can’t follow that though when you’re risking a pick that could end up netting you nothing.
Aaron Hernandez is technically innocent under that standard, too. His first conviction was vacated when he died.
Hernandez was definitely proven guilty.
… I don’t believe it was automatically vacated. His lawyers can apply for that, but not sure it has to be granted. Although the appeal can still go forward.
Couple lawyers I know said it was because it was under appeal
Right. Per Wikipedia though, it isn’t automatic — the lawyers can ask the court for it to be vacated, but it can also be contested (and I think the DA has already said they would contest), so it is up to the court if the request would be granted. If not… his lawyers could still go through with the regular appeal I guess, which would then determine guilt.
Happily, no dissonance with Barnett except if you have a fetish for combine stats for Dlinemen.
Yeah, actually. I do. :/
Wait till you see this defensive line this year. Bring on the Cowboys
Yeah, but the underwear olympics are specifically designed for us. We’ve put a lot of money into keeping it that way.
Which lots of people apparently do. Who knew that Mike Mamula would have such a prominent place in the spank banks of the Delaware Valley?
I heard that Fletcher Cox guy had a good combine too and that Lane Johnson guy.
I think this was the safest value BPA pick at 14. The other comparable DE, Allen has obvious medical concerns along with Foster (and Mayock’s declaration that he’d talked to a few teams today that told him of an updated negative on Foster’s shoulder). There are several CBs that are similar to each other that we’ll probably have access to several by pick 45. Our defensive line is gonna be BEASTLY.
I think Barnett is a solid pick at 14 considering how much younger he is than our other good DEs. Fly, Eagles, Fly!
I do like he’s clean in this dirty draft.
My first love this draft season was the thought of Graham, Cox, Jernigan, Barnett wrecking shop against the run AND the pass. Bring on the Cowboys
So the best part about looking back at past drafts is seeing all the names I completely forgot about. Jabril Peppers, I hardly knew yee
Peppers gone
Thank god I’m not a Browns fan…
Hooker dropping hard.
He went to the Colts.
He went to the colts at 15
they sure needed him too.
No quicker way to be informed than to post something false, ha
I wasnt talking about malik…
jk, i just missed it.
Live f-bomb on NFL Network!
this dude is crazy, scary guy that snaps pet mice in half
Who?
And a mini emotional melt down
Comes off as a guy that can go full water-boy on you. I’m not going to underestimate him.
The first time a smug reporter asks him why he hasn’t had a sack in awhile is going to get it.
How’s he going to react when an opponent trash talks his grandma, I wonder.
“Never go full retard”
Seriously
And he played with a torn rotater cuff and didn’t know it until the combine
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/87690a50111a60813a28ef6ae23b24300af850616b2d044c310993e63186de0b.jpg
He’s a twit
We’re not taking a CB in Round 2 either. Will either take Cook or Kamara. Get ready for your new number one CB Kazee
Cook is my top target in round 2
No way we get king now. Which cbs are even left?
Awuzie
Moreau
Tankersly
Sidney
I’ll be shocked if he gets taken in round 2.
Shocked?
My vote would be Tankersly or Moreau
Awuzie please.
For me
Awuzie
Desmond King
Kevin King
Tankersley
D. King as a corner? In the second?
Desmond that early? After he got toasted at the senior bowl?? I think he’s a safety ala Malcolm Jenkins honestly.
I think he can play outside in this scheme. And worst casae he plays outside CB for us for a year or two and then gets kicked to safety who can play slot
Yeah, still a lot of quality corners this draft. There aren’t any sure things, but there are guys with upside.
Quincy Wilson
Akhello
Teez
Jourdan Lewis
I don’t think Teez is on our board and if he is, it’s most likely not in round 2.
Guess it all depends on what intel they were able to gather. Or do you think he’s just plain too slow regardless?
I think he’s too slow and if he wasn’t then he’s too lazy to care. Douglas did say that you have to be athletic to play CB.
Tre’Davious White to the Bills.
This brings a smile to my face…
“The Cowboys’ dream scenario is for Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett, a possible top-10 pick, to slip a little in the draft, allowing them to move up and get the war daddy pass rusher they covet so much, according to a source.”
http://www.chatsports.com/dallas-cowboys/a/cowboys-draft-rumors-dallas-hoping-trade-derek-barnett-33198
war daddy
Come on bust, lets reach
Easily the most disgusting thing shown on the NFL draft coverage so far.
What happened?
Some Cowgirls fan were interviewed and there was a kid in an Eagles jersey standing with them.
cowboys fans, implied native to Philly
Ugh, nausea inducing
DALLAS SUCKS
Posted eatlier in case you missed it. .. its made me laff out loud

The Taco goes down south.
a little strange that the browns trade for a pick before they know who the cowboys pick
unless its a qb and they know boys not picking a qb
Glad they took taco and not watt
Taco has to put it all together. Wishing and Hoping, as Joe Douglas might say
He hated the nickname Taco given to him as a kid and he didn’t like tacos…why in the hell would they call him that then?
You must not like teasing children.
I have a two children and a long line of students who would vehemently disagree. But that is just lame.
Lol, I bet. It’s so lame and corny, its funny. Right down my alley.
Speaking of corny, we still getting him in the 5th?
No we’re getting Bean Younger.

Do you ever follow those links? I have to admit I went to one of two of the “She had no idea why the crowd was cheering” babes.
One cant ignore them always but they always disappoint. . Its a25 page click bait, pages take forever to load, the clock bait hottie that you just can’t ignore is always last.
Better off just cut&paste to Google images
jerome bettis always has a sharp hairline lol
That’s a good pick by Pitt.
Who do we target for round 2?
Cook, King, Q Wilson, Awuzie
On board minus Cook
CB
CB
CB
CB
CB
No Mixon?

You ready for that as the answers at CB?
I actually like Douglas as a #2 CB.
They’re both fine if it’s one of the better CBs AND them. If it’s just them, ugh. I don’t think either is a day 1 starter and both could be off the team in 2 years.
I have the exact same thoughts. We need a CB in the second.
Ideally, one of them drops to them. If Teez is the best available . . . I’d vote for Kamara, Cook, or even, ugh . . . Mixon.
Compared to whom? If King, Awuzie , Wilson go do you like Tankersley?
I like Tankersley more than Wilson. I think he’s a day 1 starter who could be a low level CB1 in a couple years. A little older than you would prefer and didn’t jump out of the gym athletically but pretty safe guy at a position of major need with good upside is a nice pick at 43.
I was hoping for something different. But I believe in your assessment
NO . . . NO NO NO!!!!
“Reuben Froster”. I love commish pronunciations.
You could say that his draft stock….. chilled, a bit.
I am absolutely tickled that the Cowboy’s newest addition is named Taco.
Not even the best DE name available
http://247sports.com/Player/Gimel-President-1743
There are too many great names in this years draft. Corn Elder is a legit name of the year entrant, though maybe only as a low seed.
Too bad he wasn’t an OL. The jokes would go something like, “Look at Cox plowing into that Taco.” Well, maybe,” That Taco is no match for the Eagle’s Johnson. He’s just not flexible enough around the edge.”
You won’t like your Taco so much after we put our Johnson on it
LOL, we are having too much fun…. or not enough.
And Johnson just destroyed Taco on that run play …
Just hammered Taco into the ground . . .
I think we’re all secretly 12.
Just wait until round 6 when we’re pulling out the switch blades about whether to draft a LB nobody has ever heard of or Charles Manson but who runs a 4.5
“Jeez, Taco is folding under Johnson’s pressure.”
Mariota to Davis is going to be a lethal combo. Mariota may be the best at leading the receiver on short passes, hitting them in stride for yac. Davis is set up for success.
Round 1, pick No. 14: Derek Barnett, Edge, Tennessee
Eagles draft best-remaining edge player
We love the value of this pick, as although Barnett lacks the elite measurables of players like Myles Garrett and Haason Reddick before him, he’s been the most productive edge player in college football over the past three seasons. He’s posted double-digit sack seasons each year, and totaled 187 QB pressures. His 91.9 PFF overall grade in 2016 was second-best among all edge players in the country (to Garrett’s 92.1). He gives the Eagles a formidable long-term edge player opposite long-time PFF favorite Brandon Graham. — Josh Liskiewitz, @PFF_Josh
Sounds like the new Evan Mathis as far as PFF love is concerned
“Most productive” maybe key to understanding new draft philosophy. That plus fits Eagles’ scheme. Not a projection into what a player could become, but rather what has he done. Not a projection of how a player could adapt to fit the scheme but how did he produce in such a scheme. Less projection probably produces fewer whiffs; unfortunately maybe fewer Ballantine blasts.
When do we see some current Eagles traded? Tomorrow?
I’d think overnight from round 3 into round 4.
Day 3 or most likely in the summer
I’m really underwhelmed with the Barnett pick. I’m having trouble seeing him be much better than a guy who rolls to 6 to 8 sacks a season average for the meat of his career. I don’t see any bust potential in the guy; he seems like plays hard enough. I just don’t get the vibe of a star / superstar I wanted to pull from this draft.
Corey Davis going at 5 ruined my night.
Aggregate 14th overall player.
You don’t get to whine about bad value
😛
http://igglesblitz.com/2017/04/checking-the-rankings/
But not the highest value guy left at 14………
I was saying I didn’t really care for Barnett at 14 before the draft, and I’m sticking with it.
I agree with you, though I didn’t have my sights on any one player in particular. It’s hard to buy the BPA pitch with Hooker still on the board, and though we may not be bleeding for a safety, he has a much greater star potential than Barnett, imo.
Hooker wasn’t necessarily a guy I was targeting, so I wasn’t too focused on him as he was dropping.
This is exactly how I felt. I was all aboard the Corey Davis train. Barnett is a decent pick with a high chance of being good and a really low chance of being special. I wanted us to swing for the fences and get a difference maker.
That being said, while I’m like warm on the Barnett pick I can kind of see how he was the best option given who was left. Would have loved for Davis, Ross or Mccaffrey to fall or for us to go with Howard, but obviously Allen has shoulder issues and Foster a bunch of issues and I didn’t like any of the remaining CBs there. So let’s hope he’s more Trent Cole in his prime than ND Kalu.
As the lone conductor of the OJ Howard or trade down train, I hate the pick. I’ll still root for Barnett though.
i think this is my issue as well. I love the production, just seems like a solid athlete who has an insane motor, and real violent hands (just waves them around in the face of the tackle, looks like a crazed man pass rushing – at least my cartoonish impression of him). Solid. Just solid. Went where he should have went, so not a reach but not an upside guy that fell that gives you a good feeling the night of the draft. Hard to see him lead the league in sacks, or be called the best pass rusher one day. Could see Howard pretty soon be called the best TE.
But this is also what we were told to expect from Joe. The Ravens are not known for making splashes in the draft, or picking hyped up players (like some combine warrior). The Ravens just wait for their turn and pick solid, hard hitting, productive players, and then move on to the next round.
Now that he is an Eagle, i am a huge Barnett fan. The better he is the better the team will be. And the real good part of it is that we have lots and lots of highlights of him to watch until preseason. Seems like a good guy too.
This is way too calm for you. I want more.
Oh, and I agree on Barnett.
I swear to God of Conley is innocent
It’s cool. We got Barnett instead
If in two years they’re both legit pro-bowlers and we’ve got solid corner play who cares.
Considering we don’t have a single cb who would start on another team I care
It would be far worse if he was in the NFC East.
Would we have taken Reddick if still there?
I think you need a creative DC to take advantage of Reddick; Schwartz doesn’t do creative. I’m sure they had Barnett ranked higher than Reddick.
But I think Reddick will put up some crazy production for AZ.
No. DE > Off Ball LB
No.
Why would you draft a SAM lb when we have a cheap good option in Bradham?
Any interest in trading up for Forrest Lamp if he makes it past the first 5 picks or so? Plug him next to Seumalo and we have have our interior OL set for years.
CBs about to hit a cliff. Lamp is really good and I’m the resident OL whore but if they want a G they’ve got better options later in the draft relative to the roster.
I would have to say no even though I also really like Forrest Lamp. We need two CBs back to back.
Really hoping there isn’t a run on CB before the Eagles pick again. I’m only counting 5 worth the second round pick in King, Awuzie, Moreau, Tankersly and Wilson. Maybe trade a player to move up a couple spots in he second?
Akhello
Not sure hes worth THAT high in the second
I don’t know if we have someone of that much value on our trade block to move up that far.
Jordan Matthews? There’s not many WR needy teams right now.
Jason Kelce? Very scheme specific and aging center.
Mychal Kendricks? Bad contract and probably is who he is now.
Vinny Curry? Bad contract and old.
Moreau probably isn’t gonna be ready to contribute too.
Moreau is supposedly going to be ready by training camp.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000794788/article/fabian-moreau-undergoes-surgery-for-torn-pectoral-muscle
Recovery time will require 4-6 months, according to Garafolo.
That’s late July to late September. His torn pec happened a few weeks before Beau Allen’s and he’s a rookie. Highly likely he’s going to be too far behind.
Honestly give me Teez Tabor.
Im a Q. Wilson guy
We got our first DB in the draft without even realizing it!
D for Derek, B for Barnett, of course
I like this! I’m not thrilled with the pick, but I hope he can translate his skill over to the NFL. If he can be better than what BG now then I’d be happy.
Same. The impressions I got of him from others were that he was a one trick pony, only has the “bend” move that pro tackles can easily deal with.
Of course, like many others, I base my opinions based on what other fans say rather than watching any real tape. Here’s hoping he can replicate his college sack totals in the pros
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the bend something most of the best pass rushers excel at?
Most of them do but they combine that with good athleticism as well.
Not trying to be pedantic here, but isn’t the bend indicative of good athleticism? Strength, body control, flexibility, balance.
Yes. Its literally “bending the edge ” around the that OT enroute to the QB
It’s part of it. Before you can bend, pass rushers do their first step. Most of those elite guys like Von Miller, Khalil Mack, and Justin Houston are very explosive and strong.
Demarcus Ware was one of the best to bend the edge before Von Miller came into the league.
I watched some highlights and he looks slow… I honestly liked Charles Harris better, he looks way quicker especially his first step.
Hmm. Kevin King or Awuzie in the second then Sidney Jones or Alvin Kamara or Samaje Perine in the third plzzzz.
I doubt Kamara lasts till the third. And, I think people are being a little too hopeful with Jones’ Achilles tear. Achilles ruptures are devastating injuries to explosive athletes.
Yeah they aren’t pretty injuries. Maybe it’ll be worth it to spend at least a 4th on him? He was the 1-2 best CB in this draft class. I’d take a flier.. to potentially get an elite corner prospect. Either way we need at least 2 CBs I wouldn’t mind Tabor even though he ran slow as cheese.
4th would be the highest I’d go and really I’d rather wait till the 5th, honestly. Think about it for a second and name one skill position player that you can recall coming back from a ruptured Achilles.
DeMeco came back but he came back much slower and his game was never built on explosion and speed like an elite CBs is.
Peters came back, but he falls in the same category as DeMeco, slower and plays a position where speed and explosion aren’t the make or break qualities.
I can’t think of many others period that have come back from Achilles tears and I can think of exactly zero skill position players that have.
If it was his ACL, sure I’d draft him in the second maybe even. But, an achilles rupture…There’s a greater than 50% chance he never fully recovers.
Not anymore. He’s expected to make a full recovery. Now he is at higher risk for injuring the other one..
😉
Division round up
Eagles – Derek Barnett DE
Redskins – Jonathan Allen DE/DT
Giants – Evan Engram TE
Cowgirls – Taco Charlton DE
A lot of DL drafted by the NFC East. Some people might call this stupid but I think Cam Robinson should be in discussion as our 2nd round pick if he’s there. He can start out at LG and then slide to RT after Peters retires.
Giants gonna Eli Apple…
Not sure if they reached since Engram was rising up to be a late 1st round pick.
Im so happy the Cowboys picked Taco. Not a fan of him at all
I get the distinct feeling we’re not drafting a corner tomorrow. anyone else?
I will find you and hurt your feelings if you’re right about tomorrow.
We better trade for one then
I get the opposite feeling. I put the highest odds of pick 43 being a CB. If not RB. Then CB round 3.
